A Simple Change To The NYS Canned Hunt Bill Will Spare Many US Native Species!

MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the League of

Humane Voters is to create, unite and strengthen local political action

committees which work to enact animal-friendly legislation, and elect
candidates for public office who will use their votes and influence for
animal protection.

LOHV is asking that the key phrase in the NYS canned hunt bill, which
prohibits the killing of any "non-native big game mammal," be changed to
"big game mammal not native to New York State."

If passed in the unchanged form, it would permit canned hunt operations to
offer Grizzly Bears, Polar Bears, Wolves, Bison, elk, Cougars, and any other
large mammal native to the US.

No serious additional opposition to the bill is expected to surface after
this change.

Currently pending bills in the New York State legislature, aimed at
eventually eliminating canned hunt facilities in New York, introduced by
Senator Carl Kruger as S3223 and Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick as A06788
would, in its current language, inadvertently allow native species to be
killed at canned hunt facilities.

In past years, the primary opposition to the canned hunt bill was from the
Farm Bureau that was protecting deer ranchers in NY who wanted to sell their
surplus to canned hunts. Had ungulates been excluded from last year's canned
hunt bill, the bill would have passed, thus protecting all of the other
species.

While this bill currently excludes deer and black bear, we have to assume
that canned hunt operations can't function for too long with only animals
that can be hunted in NYS anyway -- and for much less money, during the
regular season.

S3223

and Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick at e-mail

Please urge both Senator Carl Kruger and Assemblymember Glick to change the
language in their bills by substituting the phrase "big game mammal not
native to New York State" for the phrase "non-native big game mammal."
Explain that it would go much farther in closing down all canned hunt
facilities by preventing facilities from offering Grizzly Bears, Polar
Bears, Wolves, Bison, Cougars and other animals native to the US as captive
targets.
