EMERGENCY APPEAL
PLEASE HELP !

For the first time this year The Animal House Jamaica are facing a temporary, but serious, funding shortfall for the next three weeks. They have an online auction with some great items scheduled for the end of November and are expecting funds in December, but as of next week they have no money at all. At any given time they care for over 150 of Jamaica's once-forgotten animals and as I think you know they have had the added challenge this year of no running water.

ANIMAL WELFARE IN JAMAICA

People and families who have healthy relationships with their pets are usually happier, healthier and live longer. Children who learn how to nurture and care for their pets, also learn to care for other people as they grow older. Animals provide improved self-esteem and cognitive development.

Animals cannot tell us in their language when they are happy or unhappy, hungry, hurt or sick. So it is up to we humans to understand their needs. Animals need to be treated with care and respect

Unfortunately, many people do not understand what proper care of an animal really means, and many others cannot afford to care properly for their pets. Jamaican people commonly witness cruel treatment of animals, and over the generations some have even come to think that it is normal and okay. Research shows us that young people who mistreat animals are more likely to become violent as adults and violence hurts our society.


Meanwhile, the animals suffer in silence. We see it daily - Animals trapped in cycles of neglect and abuse - chained - sick - starving -beaten -stoned - cursed -chopped and spirits broken. Uncared for - and unloved, fighting to stay alive. Many animals are not lucky enough to have a place to call home at all, and wander our streets and countryside, scavenging and preying on wildlife.

In Jamaica, our biggest problems with animals are:

Strays (dogs, cows, goats)

Overbreeding (overpopulation)

Medical Treatment costs for spay and neuter, injuries, tick flea and worm treatment, as well as preventable diseases like parvo which require immunization.

Feral (wild) cats

Neglect, Abuse, Abandonment (including racehorses)

Humane Education

The Animal House Jamaica needs your help to improve the conditions for animals in our communities. We operate the only animal shelter on the entire northcoast, and one of only two in Jamaica.

We are in urgent need of kennel fees. Please can you help? This staffie boy will spend two weeks in emergency boarding kennels where he will be fully vaccinated, neutered and assessed, we will then place him into a foster home or forever home.

LEANING her emaciated body against the small rusty cage, starving lioness Anetta paws at the bars forlornly as the days count down to her pride's execution.

For Anetta and 13 other kings and queens of the jungle - some too weak to stand or even roar - are to be SHOT unless something is done to save them.


The squalid, ramshackle Romanian zoo that has been their home all their lives has been condemned as unfit for animals by the European Union.


And its director has no money to build proper enclosures to replace the tiny 15ft by 12ft cages into which up to FOUR lions at a time are crammed.


So today we are launching a fundraising campaign . . . to help these manigficent animals roar with pride again.


"We cannot afford to do any more for them," said Daiana Ghender, 43, who is in charge of the state-run zoo built 37 years ago under the communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. "I feel terrible when I look at them. They are sick and do not have the space for their bodies."


Caesar, head of the pride, is barely able to walk. His once mighty muscles have atrophied for lack of exercise. He shares his cage with females Annetta and Alis, both seven, and their two cubs. Like all the lions here they sleep on a concrete floor, live in their dirt and are covered in sores.


Most were bred into their hellish captivity at Oradea Zoo. "It was originally created to keep the people happy," said Daiana. "At first there were only a couple of lions. Now we have too many and there is no way to keep them apart to stop them breeding further."


Sickeningly, some visitors to the zoo laugh at the lions' plight. "There is no money and little food for them," said a tearful Daiana. "Any money we make goes straight to the government. "It upsets me so much to see them like this." Soon the zoo will have no choice but to put the animals down.


There is only one way they can escape their fate. Backed by the News of the World, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park wants to bring all the lions to Britain. They need to raise £150,000 to ship the animals to the UK and create a proper enclosure for them to live in comfort.

RUDOZEM STREET DOG RESCUE-BULGARIA!

Bulgaria has many street dogs who are often subjected to the most horrendous cruelty. They are kicked, beaten and shot on a regular basis for no other reason than that it provides certain individuals with amusement. Many of these dogs are injured and in pain or starving and in the winter there is a high chance that they will freeze to death.
Since moving to Bulgaria in 2007, we have rescued many of these dogs, but we are unable to take in any more. It is unrealistic to think that one family can solve the problem, but what we can do is to try to do our best for the many street dogs in our town. Our aim is to raise funds so that we can get premises where we can have kennels and start a sterilization programme. It will also be used for dogs whose lives are in imminent danger through sickness or injury. We realise we can not take all the dogs off the streets but this will reduce the numbers in the future.
I would like to add that these are not dangerous wild dogs or dogs that are a danger to livestock, They are friendly dogs who are craving love and attention. It is heartbreaking to see one of these dogs go up to a person, wagging its tail and rolling over only to be kicked and spat on.

Below is a photo of Della taken in June 2009 - a 7 year old healthy, friendly, beautiful cross-labrador.

Like all Pound Dogs she was waiting for someone to come and claim her as theirs or for someone to come and adopt her.
She did not know that she was only allowed 7days before a decision would be made about her life.
She just waited, looked and hoped for that one person to come.

On the 26th June 2009, Della, a healthy dog, was euthanised because nobody came to love and care for her.
She was not ill, she had done nothing wrong.
Euthanised makes it sound as if she needed to be put to sleep for her own good.
The fact is she was destroyed, a healthy dog's life and her hopes of finding a loving home were destroyed by us because we left her in the pound to die!

Time and resources are running out. All other avenues have been exhausted. To make matters worse, one of the major rescue group in Akron surrendered around 110 animals in late July because of animal neglect charges. These two situations have overstressed the humane community in Akron.

A Long Island animal shelter is reaching out to the public for help after a dog was found bound to a tree and set on fire last week.Veterinarians from the Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue center in Port Jefferson have been caring for "Maximus," a mixed breed who suffered severe burns after someone chained him to a tree, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire in Brentwood. The badly burned animal was found by a resident and taken immediately to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island for emergency care.Maximus suffered second- and third-degree burns on more than 60 percent of his body and medical expenses have totaled more than $3,000 for his aid. Veterinarian Dori Scofield, Director of Save-A-Pet, has been caring for Maximus and says his chances for survival are good, but she's asking for donations from the public in order to continue caring for the lovable pet, who's maintained high spirits despite his pain.“We can’t allow such horrific crimes be committed against our companion animals. Although Maximus has made progress, he needs a great deal of treatment and has a long road of recovery ahead,” Scofield said.Maximus was said to be "alert and friendly to everyone at the VMCLI, wagging his tail and licking the staff caring for him." Once he fully recovers, Maximus will be up for adoption at the center. As we all know times are tight for everyone, which is especially true for the dogs of Northern Greyhound. Donations are down though we have as many dogs as ever - and more will need the care of a rescue soon. Your help is crucial!

The dogs' needs haven't stopped or slowed down; each dog that comes in must be spayed or neutered, given a full wellness check, and vaccinated fully. There are also needs beyond the basic intake care; often retired racers arrive with health issues like broken legs or pinched nerves, and sometimes need to be treated for dental work above and beyond basic cleaning. And recently we've had more emergency procedures and other expenses than usual (even the washing machine for cleaning the dogs' bedding that died and needed to be replaced ASAP instead of hoping for one to be donated).

Even the basic things that could be counted on donation-wise are no longer available ... N.G.A. used to be able to count on donations of food from local stores, but no longer. Perfectly fine dog food that arrived in ripped bags that used to be donated to the Greyhounds now gets taped up and sold at a discount, and the stores that do still donate do so to to more than just N.G.A.

On a positive note; N.G.A. had a recent routine inspection from the Vermont State Department of Agriculture and the inspector was very happy to see that not only are all State regulations followed to the letter, but also that N.G.A.'s kennel manager goes above and beyond that for the dogs' needs and well-being.

We need to be able to continue that high level of care and are confident that a good many of N.G.A.'s supporters & adopters would be happy to be part of that.

A BELPER charity which helps old and neglected horses and ponies is appealing for support to secure its future.
Kenstud Pony Rescue has been suffering from dwindling funds for a number of years, but now, with more horses than ever to look after, the charity is struggling to keep going.

It costs more than £8,000 a year to keep the Ashbourne Road rescue centre up and running and the charity is on the hunt for ideas to help meet the costs.

Lesley Manger, who founded the rescue, said: "We have some brilliant supporters but we could desperately do with more help to raise money to keep the rescue going.

"We are only a small charity and looking after our elderly residents isn't cheap."

Lesley, who used to work in an equine shop, set up the charity in 1998 after becoming increasingly aware of cases of neglect in horses.

There are currently 11 horses and ponies at the centre, ranging from a ten-month-old foal to a 54-year-old donkey.

Each of the animals needs food, vet care and equipment, which pushes the charity's expenses up year after year.

Lesley, who has been working with horses for 65 years, said she is looking for people willing to organise fundraising events to make sure the charity can keep going, as it is one of the only rescue centres in Derbyshire.

She added: "Every single horse that comes to us has a bad reputation for poor health and attitude. There's something wrong with all of them, but with a little bit of TLC and patience they are fine. You need to have the knowledge and the experience.

"It's very rewarding when you turn a horse around."

She is also on the hunt for an empty shop which the charity could use free of charge for a month to sell equestrian items which have been donated to the rescue, including rugs and saddles.

MEGA URGENT! Boarding fee funds needed to save a staffie male who needs out of pound !

There are two staffie males at a pound in west yorks who are urgently need to be out of the pound now, or they will be put to sleep. Please please can anyone help me? Cats charity issues appeal desperate plea for more volunteers-UK

ONE of the north-east's biggest and most successful Cats Protection branches could fold if more volunteers do not come forward.

The Fraserburgh arm of the organisation has been running for more than 22 years, but the credit crunch and the closure of a neighbouring branch has left volunteers stretched to the limit.

The Peterhead operation had to close earlier this year due to a lack of volunteers, forcing extra animals on members at the Broch.

However, it is now feared the extra burden could force the same to happen at Fraserburgh if more fosterers do not come forward. Co-ordinator Margaret Strachan said the recession has also hit the group hard - not because of funds, but because more and more owners are being forced to abandon their pets.

She said: "We need new, perhaps younger, people to come forward to help share the workload, which just keeps growing.

"We have recently had calls about people who have been evicted from their homes and cannot take their cat with them. Also people downsizing their homes and moving into flats are also having to surrender their pets."

She added: "Everything will be paid for, if people thinking about coming forward are worried about the cost. We will cover the costs of a pen, food and treatment - all we need is people's time."

The group is also in the midst of a cat Aids epidemic.

The potentially fatal disease - known as feline Aids, or FIV - has spread quickly among strays across the Buchan corner.

It costs Cats Protection nearly £100 to neuter, vaccinate and blood test every abandoned cat they find.
