Bardot pleas for an end to animal slaughter

The legendary French movie star turned animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot has written to Nepal's president urging him to stop a mass animal sacrifice from going ahead next week. She has also appealed to the government of Catalonia to back a campaign to ban bullfighting in the north-eastern Spanish region.

Bardot, who quit the film world in 1973 and subsequently set up the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals has urged President Ram Baran Yadav to outlaw the sacrificial killings at the altar of Hindu goddess of power, Gadhimai, in Bara district.

In her letter, the 75-year-old Bardot called the practice "violent, cruel and inhumane".

This year, the temple authorities say 500,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and pigeons will be sacrificed at the Gadhimai fair which is held every five years.

"I personally find it hard to imagine that your heart can withstand such cruelty, knowing that you, being the head of the country, are ultimately responsible, " said Bardot in her letter to the president.

"I have dedicated my life to protect animals and the best gift I could receive for this life-long struggle would be the announcement of the stopping of ritual sacrifice of animals."

Bardot said she wrote to the prime minister last year and never received an answer.

The authorities are again turning a deaf ear to Bardot's pleas.

There has been no response from the president's office while organisers say the mass sacrifice, which attracts Hindu devotees from across Nepal and from neighbouring India, is a centuries-old religious tradition that should be allowed to continue.

Last month, renowned Indian animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi also urged the prime minister to stop the axing of thousands of birds and animals in the cruellest conditions imaginable. But the government said it would not ban the festival for fear of hurting Hindu religious sentiments.

Bardot has also been trying to convince the Catalan government to back a campaign to ban bullfighting.

The Popular Legislative Initiative, which has gathered 180,000 signatures, calls for a change in Catalonia's animal protection law, which bans killing or mistreating animals in shows except in the case of bullfights.

It is to be examined by the regional parliament in Barcelona in mid-December and, if it passes, Catalonia would become the first region of Spain to outlaw bullfighting.

In a letter to the Catalan government, Bardot said it was "strange and paradoxical that the (Catalonian) Socialist Party (PSC) opposes direct democracy."

Bullfighting is "an incredibly sadistic spectacle" and the PSC's position is "an insult to the formidable popular campaign which has been observed in Catalonia," she said in the letter.

Last week, Bardot also wrote to the European Union urging them to institute a Vegetarian Day as a part of the battle against global warming.

"A few weeks before the Copenhagen climate summit, I would like to draw your attention to the need to question cattle-farming, whose effects on the environment are of concern," she wrote.

"If 'developed' nations were to reduce their meat consumption, there would be less famine, which kills almost six million children each year.

"Our collective duty is to act at all levels, including by promoting a vegetarian diet. A European 'Vegetarian Day' would be a strong symbol."

Wildlife crime soaring in Britain, driving some species close to extinction

Wildlife crime is soaring in Britain, driving some species such as the hen harrier close to extinction, wildlife experts have warned.

Under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 it is a criminal offence for anyone to wilfully kill a badger
The number of wildlife crimes more than doubled in the last year, from 2,177 to 5,854, with badgers and rare birds among the most persecuted, according to the National Wildlife Crime Unit, a police-led, multi-agency unit which gathers intelligence on national wildlife crime.

Cases of cruelty to animals in their natural habitat are now being reported at a rate of 120 a week. Among them are badger bating, egg thefts, bird trapping, deer poaching, hare coursing and habitat destruction.

"There is an increase in wildlife crime in general. We are seeking to use wider policing powers, such as the Proceeds of Crime Act, to target criminals where it hurts them most – in their pocket," he said.

Dr Mark Avery, the RSPB's conservation director, added: "There is far too much wildlife crime going on in the countryside. The scale of it is unacceptable in the modern age.

"The hen harrier is pretty close to being extinct in England, in large part down to wildlife crime."

Northumbria is Britain's wildlife crime capital, with 525 reported cases between February and July this year. The county is also responsible for the highest number of wildlife shootings.

Humberside was the worst area for poaching, with 119 incidents, while Grampian saw the highest number of reports of wildlife being trapped or snared.

Tayside and Lancashire, along with Grampian, were worst for crimes against birds of prey - hen harriers are targeted partly because of their reputation for preying on game such as grouse. North Wales had the most cases of badger persecution and habitat destruction.

Bats in Gwent were the most tormented in the country, Lincolnshire had the most cases of hare coursing and infringements of the new fox hunting rules were most reported in Devon and Cornwall.

The NWCU figures did not include attacks on domestic or farm animals which, says the RSPCA, have also risen from 105,000 investigated in 2003 to 140,000 last year. Dog fighting has risen tenfold since 2004 to nearly 300 incidents last year, and airgun attacks on animals and sheep and cattle rustling are also on the increase.

One of the most worrying trends was the increase in cruelty to badgers, thought to be motivated in part by the belief they are responsible for spreading bovine tuberculosis.

Between February and July this year, the NWCU recorded 241 incidents of badger persecution - nearing the total for 2008, which was 280.

Badger baiters are now feared to be travelling all over the country to find them, motivated by payments of up to £1,000 for a live badger for a dog to be set on.

Conservations including the RSPB and the Wildlife Trusts believe that police are failing to be consistent in their handling of offenders, meaning many feel they can act with impunity. A government review into how wildlife crime is tackled is under way and will report in spring next year. Full Article:

Action Alert: Stop Bow-Hunting Deer in Westchester & Rockland County Parks

We at Friends of Animals need your help on behalf of the deer. Westchester County plans to turn 850 acres in Lasden Park and Muscoot Farm Park into deer-killing fields for bowhunters starting November 7th A "task force" with a pro-hunting bent concluded that there was an "overpopulation" of deer eating as deer eat in the forest. Its members made the unprecedented decision to open up parklands where hunting was formerly prohibited.

Hunting changes the way deer naturally evolve and can cause deer populations to increase. Nature itself ensures that the deer population is limited by available food, territory, and winter weather conditions, which restrict both food and range. The reproductive rate and the survival rate of deer will then decrease, creating a natural balance. Deer simply need us to let them be, and that's the message that needs to be communicated to your legislators.

Hunting is also known to increase the instances of accidents, with people driving into scattering deer. A 2002 study by Friends of Animals indicated that hunting exacerbates roadway deaths of deer. About half of all these accidents happen during the three months of hunting season: October, November and December.

We ask Westchester and Rockland County residents: Please contact the officials below and tell them that you demand an end to the plan to turn your peaceful parklands into places where arrows fly.

CHILDREN 8-16 RECRUITED TO SHOOT HOGS TO DEATH IN FLORIDA

The Southwest Florida Water Management District
is sponsoring a "hunt" by winning essay contest applicants. The contest was
open to children 8-16. There were to be 24 winners, but the contest
attracted only 20 applicants.

The applicant featured in the St. Petersburg Times is a 9-year-old girl, a
fourth-grader at St. Jude's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Florida, who's
mother encouraged her to enter the contest not long after the girl learned
to shoot on a camping trip.

The Children's "Hunt" is scheduled for October 17th and October 24th at the
Edward W. Chance Reserve - Gilley Creek Tract in the Lake Manatee Lower
Watershed southeast of the city of St. Petersburg, Florida.

The guns will be loaded when the children are situated in a blind.

[Since the shooting is to take place from a blind, it is probable that bait
will be placed in front of the blind(s) (where hogs were likely drawn by
bait previously in order to habituate them to the site), making the hog's
set-up targets. This whole thing is extremely unethical from a number of
perspectives. Some would call it psychologically damaging child abuse that
may do permanent harm.]

The Attorney General of Florida sent a friend-of-the-court brief to the U.S.
Supreme Court to persuade the court to reverse a U.S. Court of Appeal
decision that reversed a U.S. District Court conviction of a person who made
and sold dog fighting videos and declared the law, which also prohibited

the connection between cruelty to animals and the formative development of
serial killers.

*Florida Feral Hog Hunt Enlists Kids

*(Oct. 13) - A hunt to help curb Florida's feral hog problem has enlisted
some atypical shooters -- children.

The wild pig hunts are usually only open to adults. But this year, seeking
to not only curb the pigs but also encourage outdoor activities among kids,
the Southwest Florida Water Management District created a youth component to
the annual culling of the herds, the *St. Petersburg
Times*reported.

Wild hogs aren't native to Florida. They are thought to have been brought to
the area by Spanish explorers, according to the SWFWMD. They root with their
broad snouts to find food, which can greatly damage habitats.

"The District only allows hogs to be controlled through hunts when the
damage they cause is at unacceptable levels, and damage is occurring more
frequently and with increasing severity," the management district said.

Young hunters had to submit an essay about why they wanted to participate in
the events scheduled for Oct. 17 and Oct. 24 at the Edward W. Chance
Reserve's Gilley Creek Tract.

Cecilia Plummer, 9, of St. Petersburg, plans to hunt, she told the
newspaper.

"They're creepy," she said of the hogs. She learned to shoot during a recent
camping trip.

Each young hunter must be accompanied by an adult, and their guns must
remain unloaded until they arrive at their hunting site.

Not everyone supports the idea.

"We don't think having a young child shoot an animal and watch that animal
die before his or her eyes is a positive thing in any way," said Nick
Atwood, the spokesman for the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida.

Mayor to animal rights group: Leave us alone

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines — Leave us alone!

This in essence was the message Mayor Christobal Cadungon of Antipas,
North Cotabato, sent to animal rights advocates who had slammed the
penchant of his constituents for horse fighting.

Earlier, the Manila-based Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
called for an end to horse fighting, saying it was a violation of
animal rights.

But Cadungon said the people of his town and other parts of North
Cotabato continue to patronize horse fighting because it is part of
their customs and tradition.

He said horse fights are specifically staged during fiestas and
foundation anniversaries.

CT- DEER HUNTING, Lies and Misinformation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Priscilla Feral
Phone: (203) 656-1522
feral@friendsofanimals.org

As Hunting Season Begins in Connecticut, So Do the Lies and Misinformation

Darien,CT--"Each year, apologists for hunting are pressed to justify their violent, unethical deer-killing schemes bolstered by state wildlife agencies which profit from hunting," says Friends of Animal's president, Priscilla Feral.

In a press release issued by the pro-hunting group Fairfield County Municipal Deer Management Alliance, traffic accidents, Lyme disease and environmental destruction are solely blamed on deer. The group even called for Fairfield County residents to sanction deer killings on their private property, to "do their part" to eradicate deer. As though deer must disappear to ensure public safety.

Hunting is on the decline, and has been for years; fewer than 1% of Connecticut's residents hunt.

It's no longer acceptable to call hunting recreation. Hunters invent social benefits to excuse their killings: "protecting" deer from "over-population" or people from disease, or feeding the hungry. They are "protecting" wildflowers from "over-browsing" and heading off collisions.

"What's missing," Feral says, "is respect for conscious life - - and for the truth."

Feral observes that humans-the only species on earth whose population is truly out of control-often fail to acknowledge how our reckless overdevelopment and penchant to overpopulate directly impacts our perceived problems with deer and other free-living animals.

Hunting changes the way deer naturally evolve and can cause deer populations to increase. Nature itself ensures that the deer population is limited by available food, territory, and winter weather conditions, which restrict both food and range. Numerous studies over the years have shown that both the reproductive rate and the survival rate of deer will then decrease-creating a natural balance.

Neither do deer cause Lyme disease; black-legged ticks carry the disease when immature, on smaller host animals than deer. Vigilant checks for ticks on the body and immediate removal, especially in the summer and early autumn weeks, are key for controlling the spread of Lyme disease.

It's true: there are about a 1.5 million reported instances of drivers hitting deer in the United States every year. "So, clearly there is a problem, yet the quickest way to reduce deer/auto collisions is to get the hunters out of the woods," Feral says. A 2002 study by Friends of Animals found that hunting actually exacerbates roadway deaths of deer because it can frighten deer into darting out to roadways. About half of all these collisions occur in just three months: October, November, and December -- hunting season.

Howard Kilpatrick, a biologist with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in Connecticut, celebrates the fact that more land has been opened up to hunting-telling the Stamford Advocate "that's what we need to manage deer populations." But what Kilpatrick doesn't mention is his own professional bias: The DEP is a pro-hunting agency that is funded, in part, by the sale of hunting licenses and a federal excise tax on guns and ammunition. This fact alone ensures only one thing: corrupt, one-sided "science."

Nature is being managed to death; it's time for communities to call for ceasefires. Deer simply need us to let them be.

About Friends of Animals: We are a non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, founded in 1957. Our goal is to cultivate a respectful view of non-human animals, freeing them from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world.

Eagles' animal-welfare blitz package

A month after the controversial signing of convicted dogfighter
Michael Vick, the Eagles yesterday circulated a draft plan to
animal-rights groups that calls for an immediate, widespread campaign
to combat animal abuse in Philadelphia.

According to the proposal, obtained by The Inquirer, the team plans a
range of new animal-welfare activities, including deployment of Eagles
players and cheerleaders to schools and community events and a mobile
animal-care van to at-risk areas. The van could be called the Pet
Mobile. The team also plans to print trading cards that feature Eagles
players and their pets.

Grants and public-service announcements would promote the adoption of
homeless animals, encourage citizens to report animal abuse, and
assist fund-raising to expand spaying and neutering services.

The Eagles were widely criticized by animal-welfare advocates -
several of them angry Eagles fans who turned in season tickets and
tossed their team jerseys - following news of the Vick signing.

Bullfighting Barbie Banished!

After a hard-hitting campaign spearheaded by SHARK, Mattel stopped production of the "Spanish Barbie." This doll, dressed as a matador, glorified the despicable murder of bulls, to young children no less! After a public campaign by SHARK that took the harsh reality of bullfighting to the streets, first by using the "Slam Van", a van with three televisions, and then the Tiger Truck, Mattel heeded the public outcry. The makers of the Bullfighting Barbie assured SHARK there would be no more.

Another victory for the unwavering voices of compassionate consumers!

The Iron Cage of Movement Bureaucracy

Humane Society Teams Up With Michael Vick: The Humane Society of the United States says Michael Vick wants to work with the group on a program aimed at eradicating dogfighting among urban teens. Society president Wayne Pacelle tells The Associated Press that he met with Vick at the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., and that the meeting came after Vick's legal team approached the animal-rights group.

Essay by Steve Best

Republished on 7/28/09

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great, world-historical facts and personages occur, as it were, twice. He has forgotten to add: the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.” Karl Marx

The modern animal “rights” movement is only a few decades old. In a relatively short time, it has clearly made its presence felt in society. There are many promising signs of evolution in the social attitudes and treatment of animals, ranging from increased legal penalties for animal abuse to the growth of the animal law field and growing popularity of animal studies in higher education. Nonetheless, it would be a serious mistake to conclude that we are “winning” or making “progress” in a truly significant way, or that we can ride into the future on the wings of the mainstream organizations and their legislative- based tactics.

Fallacies of the Mainstream

Consider this: after over three decades of growth and advocacy, the US environmental movement has not accomplished any major goals and easily succumbed to eco-fascists such as Ronald Regan and George W. Bush. No amount of protests, demonstrations, lobbying, or mass mailings has been able to stop the mounting global ecological crisis which plays out in global warming, rainforest destruction, chemical poisoning, species extinction, and countless other ways. As Mark Dowie shows his must-read book, Losing Ground, the situation, in fact, has steadily deteriorated and has reached crisis proportions, despite the emergence of huge environmental organizations and growing popularity of the environmental cause.

Similarly, whatever PR gloss one cares to throw on the last few decades of the animal advocacy movement, one has to confront the startling facts that ever more animals die each year in slaughterhouses, vivisection labs, and animal “shelters,” while the fur industry has made a huge comeback. Similarly, after three decades of activity, the animal advocacy movement remains overwhelmingly a white, middle-class movement that has gained few supporters in communities of color or among other social justice movements.

So if we are counting the number of casualties in this war of liberation, to single out one criterion, our side is hardly winning. Over the past two decades, Americans have dropped $40 billion on animal protection issues, some $2 billion a year, as 3,000 volunteer organizations worked billions of hours. And for what? More death and bigger cages?

As activists lounge around swank hotels preaching to the choir in endless conferences and Ego Fests, the enemy is growing in number and strength. Meanwhile, the key tactics that have truly proven their worth and work where others fail – the methods of the ALF, SHAC, and direct action in general – have been rejected and reviled by vast swaths of the movement. Mainstream ideologues are under the spell of Gandhi, King, and “legalism,” the system-created ideology that urges dissenters to seek change only in and through non-violence and the pre-approved legislative channels of the state. As the opiate of the masses, legalism disempowers resistance movements and leaves corporations and governments to monopolize power, deploy violence at will, and flout the laws – created by and for them -- whenever necessary and convenient.

Many individuals and organizations – none more aggressively than the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) -- in fact have unctuously adopted the murderous voice of the corporate-state apparatus and denounced direct action as violent, terrorist, and antithetical to the values of the animal advocacy movement. The lethal virus of McCarthyism has infected our own movement. The moral purists and legalists implore direct action advocates to purge the “violent and extremist” element so that the voices of reason, compassion, and moderation can prevail. And prevail they will, we are asked to believe, with enough professionals, bureaucrats, lobbyists, and lawyers filling the hallways and chamber rooms of Congress, persuading our “elected representatives” who -- of course! -- serve only the interests of the people, and never the will of corporations.

It is unfortunate that such naiveté still impedes social movements today, for the entire history of state repression, political corruption, and corporate hegemony belies this bullshit at every turn. In the accelerating phase of ecological crisis, it is now do or die and we do not have the luxury to wait for change to unfold in the long march through the institutions.

Lessons from the Environmental Movement

The animal advocacy movement is poised for ever greater failures as it replicates the mistakes of the environmental movement. At the turn of the decade in 1970, the future of the new environmental movement seemed bright. Riding the crest of 1960s turmoil and protest, environmentalism quickly became a mass concern. The first Earth Day in 1970 drew millions of people to the streets throughout the nation. The 1970s became “the Decade of Environmentalism,” as Congress passed new laws such as the Clean Air and Water Act and the government created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Environmental organizations planted roots in Washington, DC, grew vast membership bases, spewed out expensive mass mailings, and walked side-by-side with the rich and powerful as they lobbied for a better world.

The movement’s recipe for success, however, quickly turned into a formula for disaster as large environmental groups increasingly resembled the corporations they criticized and, in fact, themselves evolved into corporations and self-interested money-making machines. Behemoth organizations such as Friends of the Earth, the Wilderness Society, and Nature Conservancy formed the “Gang of Ten.” They were distinguished by their corporate and bureaucratic structures whereby decision-making originated from the professionals at the top who neither had nor sought citizen input from the grass roots level.

The Gang of Ten hired accountants and MBAs over activists, they spent more time and energy in mass mailing campaigns that actual advocacy, and their money was squandered on sustaining their budgets and bureaucracies rather than protecting the environment. They brokered compromise deals to get votes for legislation that was watered-down, constantly revised to strengthen corporate interests, and poorly enforced. As an entrenched bureaucracy with its own interests to protect, they not only did not fund or support grass roots groups, they even fought against them at times. They formed alliances instead with corporate exploiters and legitimated greenwashing/ brainwashing campaigns that presented polluters and enemies of the environment as friends of the earth – as when the Environmental Defense Fund bragged that something significant happened when they partnered with McDonalds to end plastic foam containers, as the rainforests continued to be pillaged for Big Macs and Quarter Pounders. The EPA became a farce that protected the interests of corporations over citizens and the earth, while lulling the populace into thinking that there was genuine “regulation” of corporations and environmental hazards.

The significant gains in the environmental movement came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the emergence of thousands of grass roots organizations not beholden to patrons, corporations, and politicians, along with the direct action tactics of Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Earth First!, and the Earth Liberation Front.

Problems in Our House

Looking back on the last two decades of environmental politics, it is clear that mainstream organizations are an impediment to the radical changes necessary in society to stop corporate ecocide. With ecological crises mounting, an ever-growing division between the world’s rich and poor, and transnational corporations gaining increasing power and control over all nations, it is clear that tactics of compromise, reform, and moderation cannot stop the juggernaut of capitalism and speciesism and that more radical and confrontational methods are necessary.

Unfortunately, the same problems and pathologies that crippled the potential power of a mass environmental movement are replicating themselves in the animal advocacy movement. As Gary Francione, Joan Dunayer, and others have complained, it is hard even to find a consistent animal rights philosophy and politics in the movement, as most campaigns in fact are corporate-compromis ing, welfarist campaigns dressed up in a rights language and seek a reduction in suffering rather than the abolition of the root causes of exploitation.

Through the influence of the ALF and SHAC, a militant direct action presence has entrenched itself in the animal advocacy movement (the ALF beginning in the 1980s and SHAC in the late 1990s), but in most cases direct action is either shunned or vilified for fear of state repression or losing the almighty funding and patron dollars through contamination with controversy.

The New Goliath

HSUS, in particular, has distinguished itself as a divisive force by pulling out of national and regional conferences that include direct action speakers. Rather than evince respect for diversity and debate instead of run, HSUS not only has withdrawn into its own insular conference world, it has publicly attacked the ALF and SHAC. In a recent interview, Mike Markarian, HSUS Executive Vice President of External Affairs, crossed a clear line when he demonized ALF activists as criminals and applauded the FBI for going after them (see Volume I Number 4 of the North American Animal Liberation Press Office newsletter at: http://www.animalli berationpressoff ice.org).

HSUS is a vast, global empire unto itself, with offices throughout the world, 10 regional offices in the US, and tentacles in a web of other organizations and affiliates. While it has no relation to local humane societies and animal shelters anywhere in the US, HSUS does control dozens of legal corporations throughout the world, such as Earthvoice, the Wildlife Land Trust, Earthkind USA, and the UK World Society for the Protection of Animals. Like other transnational corporations, the HSUS conglomerate survives through endless expansion and growth. In 2002, it took over Ark Trust, producers of the Genesis Awards for animal-friendly TV and film. It absorbed the Fund for Animals in 2004, and in 2005 it snapped up edgy activists Miyun Park and Paul Shapiro from Compassion Over Killing, a pro-open rescue group willing to break the law to rescue animals, a clear no-no for HSUS.

From its 30,000 members and annual budget of $500,000 in 1970, it has morphed into a body of 9 million members with an operating budget of nearly $100 million in 2005. Such a behemoth has a homogenization effect on the movement whereby it monopolizes donations to animal causes, commands ever more media, disseminates welfarist ideology, co-opts activists useful to its programs, and maligns direct action approaches, all the while staying disengaged from local humane societies and animal shelters as a whole (unless they are willing to pay HSUS a fee for services and advice).

Certainly, HSUS has helped animals in various ways and helped to chalk up a number of legislative victories against cockfighting, horse slaughter, and other atrocities, and under Pacelle’s leadership it progressively advocates a vegan agenda. But it also is a vast bureaucratic organization with its own interests and needs (such as paying Pacelle’s $300,000 annual salary) that has adopted many of the unfortunate characteristics of mainstream environmental movements.

No such empire and bureaucracy can be sustained without its lifeblood – money – and fundraising, patron satisfaction, and forging corporate ties thereby occupy a good deal of HSUS time and energy. In 2003, HSUS had $116,205,882. 00 in total liability and net assets, yet spent around $3.5 million on the crucial problem of animal sheltering (far better than in 2002, when they gave less than $150,000 to local humane societies and shelters). They did, however, spend over $15.6 million on fundraising and accrued $6.3 million in administrative costs.

HSUS acquired over countless millions of dollars in donations to aid animals gravely affected by hurricane Katrina. They worked to save many animal lives, but also came under intense fire from activists on the ground who claimed that they were inept and inefficient. One has to wonder if a more flexible organization structure would not have been more effective. And how much of that largesse supports its bloated bureaucracy and fundraising needs, and how much goes directly to the animals? Would such funds not have been better utilized by shelters and rescue organizations at the grass roots?

In 1994, Pacelle told Animal People that his goal was to build “a National Rifle Association of the animal rights movement,” suggesting he seeks a powerful organization dominated by single-issue politics. Such an approach means in practice the kind of compromise politics that vitiated the environmental movement, such that HSUS is prepared to bargain with or support nearly any politician (however right-wing) or corporation for a vote. This was evident in their recent support for the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA, a neo-liberal economic policy modeled on NAFTA), whereby they gained tenuous support for some animal issues, but lent their support in turn for a “trade agreement” that threatens small farmers, violates the rights of workers, promotes factory farming (and thus greater meat and dairy consumption) , and favors transnational corporations that grow wealthy through the plunder of Southern nations.

Do or Die

If the animal rights movement is ever to become more than just another “interest group,” if it is to achieve it goals of animal liberation, and if it is to realize its potential for radically transforming human identity and society, it will have to study past social movements and learn from their successes and failures – the environmental movement in particular -- in order to draw the right lessons and not repeat the same mistakes. Activists need to be critical of large mainstream organizations, fight to maintain philosophical and tactical diversity, and demonstrate the vital importance of grass roots, direct action, and underground approaches.

As frustrated as activists become for far greater degrees of progress, it is also true that we need patience, foresight, long-term vision and strategies, and use of non-violent tactics where these are viable. Where legal and non-violent tactics are not viable, however, where they are not enough to stop exploiters from killing innocent animals, it is our duty to use stronger tactics to bring this violence against animals to an end. As we would not argue any differently if we were defending human beings against violence and terrorism, we should apply the same arguments to animals who have equal rights to life and freedom. As with past human liberation struggles, any and all tactics that prove themselves effective in the field of battle must be used for animal liberation, thus demanding a pluralist and non-dogmatic approach.

For a long time, the direct action community has tolerated the opprobrium of mainstream organizations like HSUS, which claims that direct action approaches have discredited the values of the movement and impeded its progress. As we consider the level of radical tactics necessary to defend animals and the earth, and ponder the fallacies that have guided the animal advocacy movement for too long, maybe it’s time to turn the tables and expose the fallacies and hypocrisies of the mainstream.

The message of the animal rights/liberation movement has nothing to do with profits, corporations, and fundraising, and everything to do with a revolutionary transformation of human consciousness and all existing social institutions.

Omak Suicide Race-Take Action!

Omak Suicide Race

It's "The Deadliest Horse Race in the World" and it's right here in Washington

"It is one thing to preserve traditions or commemorate acts of courage in the history of a people, but this staged spectacle, putting horses and humans at grave risk year after year for entertainment and profit, is an abomination. This is a blight on the organizers, promoters, participants and willing spectators, and no credit to horsemanship or anyone’s culture. It is the reckless infliction of terror, pain, exhaustion, suffering, and death on an animal that has been our faithful partner and companion through the ages." - Dr. Andrew G. Lang, Former ASPCA Director of Equine Programs

Omak is a small town in Eastern Washington State. Every year the local rodeo, called the Omak Stampede, boasts of its main attraction "The World-Famous Omak Suicide Race." The race regularly and routinely kills horses.

Over a span of four days and nights, riders repeatedly send horses off "Suicide Hill" with a 120-foot full-galloping start. Horses plunge blindly more than 210 feet downhill, at a slope organizers have boasted is an "almost vertical…62 degree angle." At breakneck speed horses then meet, with concrete force, the rocky Okanogan River. After a panicked swim of more than a football field in length, the horses face a final, grueling uphill sprint.

These horses, many 'on-loan' for the event, have suffered heart attacks from over exertion, broken bones from collisions and shocking tumbles, and even horrifying death by drowning.

In the past 25 years, 20 deaths have been documented; in 2004, three horses were killed in the first heat alone. When will they stop calling it a Suicide Race and start calling it murder?

RODEO ALERT IN CALIFORNIA!ACTION NEEDED!

Rodeo Alert - Letters, e-Mails, Calls Needed

The Hayward Junior Rodeo takes place at the Rowell Ranch in Hayward, California on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 & 2, beginning each day at 9:00 a.m.
This rodeo is for children ages 6 through 18, and will feature 19 different events. Of particular concern are the calf roping, bull riding, and goat tying events.
Goat tying is especially traumatic for the animals. A young goat is tethered at one end of the arena. A child on horseback gallops to the goat, dismounts, then throws and ties the hapless and terrified animal. Sometimes the horse runs right over the goat. (Click here to see video on YouTube.)
Goat tying has absolutely nothing to do with life on a working ranch. It's basic rodeo training prior to graduation to calf roping. The Rowell Ranch rodeo policy allows each goat to be thrown and tied a total
of five times per day. And how long before a child gets a hoof in the eye? At the very least, it's bad parenting to allow a child to take part in such a potentially lethal event. Some would call it child endangerment. We call it cruelty to animals - and child endangerment.

Please write/email the Hayward Area Recreation & Park District and ask them to discontinue this cruel event, for the sake of the animals as well as the children. This mistreatment of animals sends the wrong
message to the children involved - it desensitizes them to animal cruelty and suffering.

Here are two experts' statements to help you prepare your comments:
1) Peggy W. Larson, DVM: "As a former large animal veterinarian, a pathologist, meat inspector and former bareback bronc rider, I don't have to imagine the trauma these young, small goats sustain in this ridiculous, cruel event. The injuries and the pain are real. There must be some collective mental vacuum in the rodeo crowd that would find this event fun. Substitute a 40 pound dog in this event and the roper would wind up in court for animal cruelty, probably felony animal cruelty in most states. These events are inhumane and cruel and must end."
2) Capt. Cindy Machado, Chief Humane Officer, Marin Humane Society: "The [YouTube] video accurately depicts what happens, but doesn't show the extent of injuries that these goats and sometimes horses can suffer. Lots of tangling issues, rope burns, dislocated legs, sometimes broken necks/legs.. . I would argue that it could be considered cruelty under Penal Code 597(b)..."

Sample letter (please add your own wording):

Hello Ms. Shue,

Please don't allow the goat tying event to take place during the Hayward Junior Rodeo. This event involves a young goat tethered at one end of the arena. A child on horseback gallops to the goat, dismounts, then throws and ties the hapless and terrified animal. Sometimes the horse runs right over the goat. You may see an example of it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqtNRh1-4dk

You may or may not be familiar with California's animal cruelty laws, but it is strongly suggested that an event such as the one described is violating CA Penal Code 597(b). A Humane Enforcement officer can at any time put a stop to such activities that are perceived to be in violation. The punishment for EACH violation can be classified as a misdemeanor or a felony and can carry a fine of up to $20,000.

Please consider requiring that this event be removed completely from the plans of the Hayward Junior Rodeo this year and any subsequent events. Thank you for your time.

THE TRUTH ABOUT WWF

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=66178175201

Recent News
Thank you for your visit please find out more about the WWF and take action if you like... dont forget to tell your friends and invite them to discover the truth!
Millions of people have no idea about the WWF they think that they care about animals!!!!! Well they dont!

The WWF was the driving force in pressuring the U..S.. Congress to legislate the screening of chemicals for "endocrine (hormone) disrupting" effects and has subsequently been heavily involved in establishing the framework for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) massive chemical-testing program now under development. . As its Web site points out: "WWF invested substantial resources in the EPA's Endocrine Disruptor Screening and Testing Advisory Committee," which "agreed upon a set of tests to form the foundation for the screening and testing program.." What the WWF neglects to mention, however, is that 10 of the 15 recommended screens and tests are animal-poisoning studies, some of which kill hundreds or thousands of animals at a time.. According to scientific estimates, the WWF-backed endocrine testing program will kill up to 1..2 million animals for every 1,000 chemicals tested, and with environmental organizations pressing for tens of thousands of chemicals to be retested under this program, the toll in animal suffering and death will be staggering.. The WWF is also pressuring government agencies in Europe to embark on a similar animal-testing program..

In addition to lobbying for more chemical testing, the WWF has teamed up with Procter & Gamble, S..C.. Johnson, and other chemical companies to create an institute to pursue "basic research" on endocrine disruptors.. On top of this, the WWF is now pushing the U..S.. Congress to pass a bill that would pour additional millions in public funds into endocrine research--much of which would likely be used to fund experiments on animals..

Unfortunately, the "endocrine disruptor" issue is not an isolated example.. The WWF has been a major force in pressuring the European Union to amend its Chemicals Policy to require companies to test and retest as many as 30,000 new and existing chemicals.. The British Institute for Environmental Health estimates that this process will kill upwards of 45 million animals if the standard battery of animal-poisoning tests is used.. The WWF's U..S.. and Canadian offices are also calling for more testing of pesticides, despite the fact that more than 9,000 animals are already killed for each pesticide product on the market.. The organization has called for certain pesticides to be tested for "developmental neurotoxicity" (DNT) using a test that kills upwards of 1,300 animals each time it is conducted.. This test has been heavily criticized by scientists, including the EPA's own Scientific Advisory Panel, which concluded that "the exposure of rat fetus/pups was not shown to be equivalent to human fetus/infant during equivalent stages of brain development" and that "the current form of the DNT guideline is not a sensitive indicator of toxicity to the offspring.." In other words, WWF is calling for thousands of animals to be killed in a test that scientists admit is not relevant to humans!

In its defense, the WWF says that "in the absence of effective, validated alternatives, WWF believes that limited animal testing is needed for the long-term protection of wildlife and people throughout the world.." However, there is nothing "limited" about the massive amount of animal testing that the WWF is endorsing.. Dr.. Joshua Lederberg, Nobel Laureate in Medicine, pointed out in 1981: "It is simply not possible with all the animals in the world to go through chemicals in the blind way we have at the present time, and reach credible conclusions about the hazards to human health.." Now more than 20 years later, millions of animals are still dying in agonizing chemical toxicity tests, and we are no closer to getting dangerous chemicals out of the environment. . In fact, despite killing hundreds of thousands of animals in painful chemical toxicity tests, the EPA has not banned a single toxic industrial chemical in more than a decade!...

The WWF Endorses the Killing of Wild Animals, Too!!!
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) gives special meaning to the word "conservation. ." The organization, founded in 1961 by a group of wealthy trophy hunters, apparently believes that conserving animals means keeping them around long enough for well-heeled "sportsmen" to blast them out of the woods, oceans, skies, plains of Africa, and jungles of Asia.. Past WWF chapter presidents include C..R.. "Pink" Gutermuth, who also served as president of the National Rifle Association, and trophy hunter Francis L.. Kellogg, who is legendary for his massive kills.. In its early days, the WWF even used fur auctions to raise funds...

Since then, the WWF has learned that most people are appalled by hunting and trapping, so today, the organization veils its true stance under phrases like "sustainable development, " arguing that killing is acceptable under some circumstances. . When answering difficult questions about its policy on hunting, trapping, and whaling, the WWF is careful never to state outright that it approves of all these activities.. But don't be fooled, the WWF's intentions are all too clear and deadly!!

Sealing
According to the Web site of the WWF's Canadian office, "WWF is not an animal welfare organization. . We support the hunting and consumption of wild animals provided the harvesting does not threaten the long-term survival of wildlife populations. . WWF has never opposed a sustainable seal hunt in northern or eastern Canada.." However, despite the WWF's portrayal of the situation, the Canadian seal hunt is anything but a "subsistence" hunt--it is the largest slaughter of marine mammals in the world.. Quotas established by the Canadian government have soared to an all-time high: 350,000 seals per year for the next three years.. Not since the mid-1800s, when unrestricted slaughter saw a million seals per year killed, has so much blood been shed on the ice off Canada's East Coast...
Worse is that the Canadian government has stated in internal documents that having the WWF's support for any raise in seal quotas is important, and the WWF's position statement suggests that it had been working with the Canadian government before the quota was announced.. In other words, the WWF had the power to help avert the largest quota of harp seal pups in history but chose, instead, to let it happen without so much as a word of opposition!! !

Whaling!!!
While the WWF states that it opposes "commercial whaling," it does support the slaughter of whales by native tribes and under some other conditions.. When asked directly about its policy, WWF is vague, stating: "WWF's views on whether sustainable whaling should be permitted derive from its mission 'to conserve nature and ecological processes and to help build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature..'" In the past, WWF officials have clearly stated that "WWF International has the national WWF organizations behind it in the view that as soon as one can ensure a sustainable commercial harvest of the great whales under secure international control, then whaling will no longer be a WWF concern...."

Sport Hunting!!!
As one would expect of an organization founded by hunters, the WWF does not oppose the slaughter of animals with guns and other weapons for sport.. Rather than working to stop the killing, the WWF believes that hunting should be regulated, arguing that wealthy trophy hunters can bring income to poorer nations.. The WWF claims that it has no power to stop hunting, stating, "The decision to allow trophy hunting is a sovereign one made entirely by the governments concerned. . We will continue to monitor governments' enforcement of important trade laws to ensure that trophy hunting is done within the legal standards of that area...."

Elephants!!!
The WWF believes that culling-another way of saying "killing"-elephants is acceptable, as is the trade in ivory, because the profits that it brings spur governments to keep elephants from going extinct.. In 2000, U..S.. News & World Report reported that WWF representatives traveled to Nairobi to ask the United Nations to lift the ban on the ivory trade in order to allow a "sustainable harvest of ivory for horns and hunting trophies..."

The WWF's bizarre view-that we must kill some animals now in order to save animals to kill later-has proved false time and again.. The trade in ivory has only encouraged rampant poaching, the senseless slaughter of elephants.. The WWF tries to duck the issue by falsely stating, "The decision to cull, or to select animals from the herd for removal or death, is indeed an agonizing choice, but it is one made entirely by the governments concerned and there is no international involvement in those decisions.."

Trapping!!!
As with hunting and whaling, the WWF refuses to condemn the massive killing of animals with steel-jaw leghold traps.. While calling itself a "preservationist" organization that "seek[s] to be the voice for those creatures who have no voice," the WWF stands back from the issue, stating that "the trade in furs, skins, and other products of animals that are not endangered isn't the focus of our campaign.."
But no matter how hard the WWF tries to "greenwash" its support of animal slaughter, its real message rings out loud and clear: Animals are ours to hunt, trap, kill, poison, and use as we see fit.. And although appeals to preserve genetic diversity, ecosystems, and the planet sound good on paper, they mean little if what the WWF is really advocating is more efficient killing fields...

Wolf Hunting!!!
Despite an ongoing international tourist boycott that was called in response to the wolf "control" program in Alaska, in which at least 100 wolves have been shot as of March 2004, the WWF is promoting several trips to Alaska throughout June, July, and August 2004 as part of "WWF Travel," an "ecotourism" program.. When asked why the WWF was sending its members to Alaska, effectively undermining efforts to save wolves in the state, the WWF travel desk representative stated that the WWF did not consider the matter of wolf-killing a priority..

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

Please write to the WWF and express your opposition to its involvement in the slaughter of millions of animals in laboratories. . Let the WWF know that you contribute only to organizations that oppose outdated animal-poisoning tests and that there is no such thing as conservation through killing..

Urge the Kansas Attorney General to halt the state’s illegal frog hunting season!
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has set a frog hunting season to
run from July 1 through October 31, 2009. According to state hunting
regulations, the hunt is being carried out illegally.
According to the pro-hunting website ammoland.com, “The
best method (of hunting frogs) is to walk quietly through the water at night
and shine a bright light along the bank until a pair of glowing eyes appear.
Temporarily blinded by the light, frogs can be grabbed or netted” (http://www.ammoland.com/2009/06/25/bullfrog-hunting-season/

accessed 7/11/09).

Hunting with the use of an artificial light is
specifically prohibited by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks as its
web site clearly states. It is illegal
to: “throw or cast the rays of a spotlight, headlight or other artificial
light… for the purpose of spotting, locating or taking any wildlife species
while having in possession any archery or firearms equipment”

accessed July 11, 2009).

While hunting with an artificial light is clearly against
the law in Kansas, nothing about this is stated in the state’s fishing
regulations, where the frog hunting regulations can be found.
WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE FROGS
Contact Kansas Attorney General Steve Six and request that his office
immediately conduct an investigation into this seemingly illegal state hunting
season. Ask that the hunting season be
cancelled and that those responsible for it are disciplined to the fullest
extent of the law. Please send C.A.S.H.
a copy of your correspondence so we can gauge how much attention is being paid
to the issue.

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Mr. Six:

I am writing to respectfully request that your office
look into what may be an illegal frog hunting season being overseen by the
state Department of Wildlife and Parks. Placed
among the state fishing season regulations, frog hunting regulations permit the
use of bows and arrows as well as crossbows and seemingly permit the use of
artificial lights as a hunting aid.
Because state hunting regulations specifically prohibit: “throw(ing) or
cast(ing) the rays of a spotlight, headlight or other artificial light… for the
purpose of spotting, locating or taking any wildlife species while having in
possession any archery or firearms equipment”
accessed July 11, 2009) it appears that the Department is allowing illegal
means to hunt frogs, in violation of its own regulations.

Because of this apparent violation of state law, I respectfully
request that you commence an investigation into the frog hunting season being
promoted by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. If your
investigation finds my concerns to be valid, request that you at once cancel the
frog hunting season and discipline those responsible. Please respond to my
concerns at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,

Don't be cruel
DOG DAZE By Kathy Moran Updated July 11, 2009 12:00 AM

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are up in arms against House Bill No. 5291, "an act granting the Fox New Millennium Amusement Club, Inc. (FNMACI) a franchise to construct, operate and maintain a Greyhound racetrack facility in any place within the city of Mandaue, province of Cebu." The principal authors of the bill are Reps. Benhur L. Salimbangon, Nerissa Corazon Soon-Ruiz, and Ferjenel Biron.

HB 5291 was approved by the House of Representatives on Dec. 3. It was sent to the Senate on Dec. 12 as Committee Report 1393.

The process of making a law in the country requires the approval of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. When a bill is passed, like in this case in the House of Representatives, the Committee Report is sent to the Senate for its concurrence and approval.

Anna Cabrera, PAWS director, told me that the official voting on the Senate bill will start anytime after July 27.

PAWS and PETA have been actively lobbying in the Senate against the passage of the bill. So far, only two senators - Francis Escudero and Gringo Honasan - have said that they would vote against the bill.

"We will still meet with other senators who have agreed to listen to us on the matter," Anna said. "There is so much cruelty that goes into Greyhound racing. We cannot let this become a sport here."

In the minutes of the committee hearing that PAWS was able to get, the sponsors of the bill have said if passed into law, the bill would assure that the Greyhounds will be well-cared for and that a shelter will be established for the retired Greyhounds.

But we all know that "dog keeping" hereabouts means that dogs can be left outside unsupervised and can be made semi-strays for the rest of their lives. In the few trips that I have made to Thailand, I have been witness to how the people there care for the street dogs. Matter of fact, there are people who really come out to feed the dogs that pass by their homes. The other dogs, meanwhile, are kept in the temples and taken care of by monks. Unlike here where it is not uncommon to see dogs, mangy and undernourished, walking the streets and being ignored by Pinoys.

I also know that only a handful of local animal welfare groups like PAWS, Compassion and Responsibility towards Animals (CARA) and the Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PhilSPCA) have spay-neuter campaigns within Metro Manila. Yet, these are low-impact community outreach programs which, at best, reach out to about 50 dogs per welfare group per month.

It is funny how in most developed countries Greyhound racetracks are closing down and here we are wanting to open one. We must be moving backwards. The Greyhound racing proponents here seem to be trying to bring back to life a dying and cruel sport.

What makes the sport so cruel?

Well, for starters, it will encourage racers to breed Greyhounds that are race-worthy. When that is done, the Greyhounds that are not good enough will either be put down or sent to a shelter where only the god of dogs will know how they will be treated.

Overbreeding and inbreeding are cruel. More cruel is what will happen to the has-been racers. And the list of cruelty goes on and on.

Let's make a stand and help our educated legislators see that only cruelty will result from building a Greyhound racing track and bringing the sport to the country.

* * *

Here are excerpts from the letter PAWS sent to the Senate:

Greyhound racing is cruel.

The new industry of Greyhound racing will trigger the breeding of hundreds of Greyhounds, more than it can place at race tracks. Racing aficionados will be motivated to produce "winning" dogs and will end up overbreeding them. In the United States, approximately 20,000 surplus Greyhounds are destroyed each year because they have been deemed unfit to race and because there are not enough homes for the retired dogs.

To illustrate just how many retired dogs that the Philippines would be dealing with, consider this: A Greyhound's racing career is usually over at three and a half to four years of age, and yet, its life expectancy is about 13 years old.

Add this to the Philippine scenario where there is already an alarming rate of homeless dogs due to the unregulated breeding of purebred dogs, and the lack of government-funded spay-neuter programs to prevent overpopulation of "native" dogs or regular aspins (Asong Pinoys, formerly called askals ), House Bill 5291 will exponentially increase the current dog population of an estimated 9.6 million.

Greyhound racing cannot be operated in a humane manner.

The reason why the Greyhound racing industry is inherently cruel is that it treats dogs as commodities. It is a form of gaming in which the amount of money a dog generates determines his or her expendability.

As a result, the following cruelties have been commonly observed in racing Greyhounds' kennels or facilities in developed countries - even those with strict animal welfare laws like the United States:

Greyhounds are kept at track kennels in stacked cages, often muzzled, for a total of 18 to 22 hours per day.

Many tracks use wooden crates which get soaked in urine, making sanitary conditions difficult.

Greyhound adoption groups regularly report that incoming Greyhounds suffer from an incredible variety of afflictions. Untreated conditions and injuries such as missing or broken toes, broken hocks, and incredible internal (whipworms, hookworms, tapeworms, coccidia, and giardia) and external (fleas, ticks, mites) parasites are common. Teeth and gums frequently show advanced signs of neglect-related disease and weakness, attributable to diet, as well as stress-related trauma from chewing on available materials in the environment (stress/boredom precipitated) .

Greyhound racing is immoral.

House Bill No. 5291 is proposing that we create a whole new profit-driven industry based on assumption of "expendable" lives.

To allow a cycle of breeding and then mercilessly killing thousands of dogs "not being good enough to race" in the name of gambling and entertainment is morally inexcusable.

There is no need for the Philippines to adopt immoral and unethical practices being criticized by a growing number of informed citizens all over the world.

It will be a blight on our national image to introduce this form of animal cruelty as an acceptable and legal practice in our country.

It is respectfully prayed that House Bill No. 5291 be outright rejected and not passed into law for it introduces the cruel, inhumane, immoral and unethical sport that is Greyhound racing.

* * *

This is the letter of PETA:

The Philippines Senate is considering a bill that would bring Greyhound racing to the country. If approved, this bill will doom thousands of Greyhounds to miserable lives and deaths.

Picture this: 10,000 dead Greyhounds are found buried in a "killing field". The bodies of 3,000 former racers are uncovered in a backyard pit. Seventy-three Greyhounds burn to death after fire breaks out in their kennel, while more than 50 others die of heat stroke in the same kennel a few years later. These horrific incidents occurred in England and the US, but Greyhound racing causes the suffering and deaths of countless dogs around the world.

The cruelty of Greyhound racing begins even before a dog steps foot on a track. Countless animals whom breeders believe will be too slow to win races are killed each year. Dogs have been shot, bludgeoned, or simply dumped to fend for themselves.

Dogs who are deemed "good enough" to race typically spend their lives in cages and are kept muzzled at all times. They never know a kind word or a gentle touch, much less the belly rubs and companionship that they deserve. Trainers often dope Greyhounds to mask injuries or to get them to run faster. Sickness and injuries - including broken legs, heatstroke, and heart attacks - claim the lives of many dogs.

In recent years, 27 Greyhound tracks have closed in the US because of declining attendance, and the so-called "sport" is illegal in 34 states. Barbados, Haiti, and Indonesia have all shuttered their once active tracks, and former racing dogs in Guam were given to anyone who would take them after the local track closed because of dwindling profits. Please do your part to prevent this cruel sport from being introduced to the Philippines and immediately make your objections to this proposal known to these officials.

1 dead at Pamplona; first goring death since '95

By ALVARO BARRIENTOS Associated Press Writer
Published: Friday, July 10, 2009 at 7:21 a.m.

A charging bull gored a young Spanish man to death Friday at Pamplona's San Fermin festival, the first such fatality in nearly 15 years. Nine others were injured in a particularly dangerous and chaotic chapter of the running of the bulls.

Pamplona officials identified the man as Daniel Jimeno Romero, 27, from the Madrid suburbs of Alcala de Henares. He was on vacation with his parents and girlfriend, who identified him.

The San Fermin festival Web site said Jimeno Romero was gored in the neck and lung during a run in which a rogue bull named Capuchino separated from the pack, which is among the worst things that can happen at Spain's most popular fiesta.

Isolated bulls are more likely to get disoriented and start charging at people.

Photographs showed Jimeno Romero lying on a stretcher moments after the goring, his face and neck stained with blood and his eyes only half-open. An emergency medical worker was leaning over him, applying what appeared to be gauze to his neck wound.

Three other people were gored, and six people suffered bumps, bruises and other lesser injuries, said Fernando Boneta, director of Virgen del Camino Hospital.

Among the injured was a 61-year-old American who was struck in the chest and had internal bleeding in his lungs. Doctors said he was in intensive care but that his condition was not considered life-threatening. The man was identified by his initials, E.P.S., but his full name was not released.

Also injured in the run was a 20-year-old from London, and a 24-year-old Argentine. Another American, a 63-year-old identified by the initials K.L., injured an elbow.

The festival ends Tuesday, and there was no indication that the remaining bull runs would be canceled because of the death.

The last fatal goring at the running of the bulls was that of 22-year-old American Matthew Tassio in 1995. In 2003, a 63-year-old Spanish man, Fermin Etxeberri, was trampled in the head by a bull and died after spending months in a coma.

Friday's death raises to 15 the toll since record-keeping began in 1924.

Fatalities are relatively rare and when one occurs, it serves as a reminder that amid all the street parties and revelry associated with San Fermin, running with fighting bulls weighing 1,300 pounds (600 kilograms) or more on cobblestone streets packed with people is a life-risking exercise.

This run, the fourth of eight held at San Fermin, was by far the most perilous of this year's festival. The previous three runs were comparatively placid affairs, with no serious injuries.

The six bulls covering the half-mile (850-meter) course with six accompanying steers tend to mind their own business and keep running as long as they stay in a pack. A bull that gets separated is more likely to get frightened and aggressive, and that is what happened Friday.

Capuchino, a brown, 1,130-pound (515-kilogram) specimen, fell early in the run and ended up on its own.

When it reached a stretch right outside the bullring that marks the end of the course, it started charging right and left, and even ran back the wrong way several times. Runners scurried for safety to wooden barriers along the route as the bull attacked. Herders waving sticks tried in vain to guide it into the ring, even yanking on the animal's tail to turn it around.

This went on for a minute and a half, which is a long time at San Fermin.

At one point the bull picked one man up with its horns and flipped him into the air, then kept going after him as he lay curled up on the ground, covering his face. He got up and ran away, and was apparently not seriously hurt.

"It was a light bull. Its charges were not particularly strong but it moved very fast from left to right," one of the herders, Humberto Miguel, told The Associated Press. "Of the whole pack, it was the one that gave us the most trouble."

The bulls used in Friday's run, from a ranch called Jandilla, have a reputation for being fierce at San Fermin. They hold the record for the most gorings in a single run - eight, one day in 2004.

The bulls used in the runs face matadors and almost certain death the same afternoon in the Pamplona bullring.

(This version CORRECTS spelling of bull's name to Capuchino sted Cappuccino.)

HSUS-They Shoot Endangered Animals,Don't They?

The recent decision by a federal court in the District of Columbia to overturn a controversial federal policy allowing the killing of captive and endangered exotic mammals at some of the nation’s estimated 1,000 “canned” shooting ranches was a particularly satisfying victory in our long-term campaign to end the unethical practices of Safari Club International, the world’s largest trophy hunting organization.

This is the group that has manufactured a set of awards programs to encourage competitive killing of rare animals—such as “Bears of the World” or “Cats of the World.” To secure all of SCI’s awards, including the “grand slams” and "inner circle," a trophy hunter would have to kill more than 320 different species and subspecies of mammals.

It’s a selfish, all-consuming passion to kill and display trophies and to occupy a higher place in the hunting pantheon—whether they are shot in the wild or dispatched in one of these drive-by shootings on a fenced preserve. Typically, those involved have the means to pursue any form of entertainment or pastime, yet they choose to spend their dollars and their limited time shooting the world’s rarest and most beautiful animals. How sad.

The endangered addax is targeted by SCI.
Our lawsuit, filed jointly with several conservation groups, successfully challenged a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ruling that permitted the shooting of three critically endangered species bred and raised on game ranches—scimitar-horned oryx, addax, and dama gazelle. These antelope have magnificent horns which trophy hunters prize.

SCI argued that charging high fees to kill endangered animals creates a market that encourages money to flow to overseas conservation programs that could benefit the beleaguered species. That bit of twisted logic—kill them to save them—didn’t stop the court from striking down the program.

Last year, The HSUS won another major victory over SCI, which had earlier persuaded Congress to allow U.S. sport hunters to kill Canadian polar bears and import their trophies. We helped persuade the USFWS to list the bears—imperiled by climate change—as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. This prohibited the import of polar bear trophies, removing a major incentive to shoot them. But SCI and its trophy hunting cohorts are so bent on killing these imperiled animals, they have filed several lawsuits challenging the decision to list polar bears, and are even lobbying Congress to reopen the polar bear trophy trade. That's right, these groups would rather see the polar bear stripped of federal protection, and potentially go extinct, than temporarily refrain from shooting just one of the hundreds of species regularly sport-hunted around the globe. Yesterday, Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) introduced a bill to authorize the import of sport-hunted polar bear trophies.

John J. Jackson III, a former SCI president, once tried to explain what motivates the group's members: “A trophy of any species attests that its owner has been somewhere and done something, that he has exercised skilled persistence and discrimination in the agile feat of overcoming, outwitting, and reducing game to possession.”

This is a chilling rationale for participation in this so-called sport. Is it “skilled persistence” on display when the trophy collector is driven to a feeding station at one of these canned hunting operations to shoot semi-tame, captive animals with the kill all but guaranteed?

SCI thinks these kinds of captive shoots are fine and permits them to be counted in its record books. In fact, SCI has one hunting achievement award—"Introduced Trophy Animals of North America"—that can be claimed only by patronizing captive hunting ranches. It’s in effect a marketing effort that drives hunting participation at the ranches in Texas and elsewhere around the country. Yet even other hunting groups that encourage and maintain trophy records, such as the Boone and Crockett Club and the Pope and Young Club, do not permit the listing of trophies from fenced enclosures.

The fight to weaken Endangered Species Act protections and its Orwellian “killing is conservation” theme are woven throughout SCI’s 38-year history. The Tucson-based organization once sought to circumvent the federal law by seeking government approval to import an astonishing 1,125 trophies of 40 species on the endangered list. They included gorillas, cheetahs, tigers, orangutans, and snow leopards.

With a straight face and not a hint of irony, SCI claimed its goal was “scientific research and incentive for propagation and survival of the species.” There was one small problem. The animals they wanted as trophies weren't yet dead. Request denied by the USFWS.

Now a U.S. District Court judge, agreeing with The HSUS, once again held the line on animal protection. An organization that in reality operates as an enemy of the world’s endangered species while masquerading as a conservation organization has been stymied yet again.
