New Jersey Becomes Fifth State to Enact Fur Labeling Law

(Nov. 23, 2009) ― The Humane Society of the United States praised New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine for signing legislation into law requiring all garments made of animal fur to be labeled as such. The consumer protection measure, introduced by Sen. Jeff Van Drew, D-1, and Assemblymember Nilsa Cruz-Perez, D-5, passed both the Assembly and the Senate with large margins. With the enactment of this new law, New Jersey joins Delaware, Massachusetts, New York and Wisconsin as the fifth state with a fur labeling law on the books.

"Consumers have the right to know exactly what they are buying so they can make informed purchasing decisions," said Heather Cammisa, The HSUS' New Jersey state director. "A growing number of people have ethical objections to wearing animal fur. We applaud Governor Corzine and the New Jersey legislature for passing this important consumer protection bill."

Ongoing investigations by The Humane Society of the United States have revealed that many designers and retailers have sold unlabeled or mislabeled fur-trimmed jackets. The HSUS is pursuing a consumer protection lawsuit against several major retailers in the District of Columbia, and is also urging Congress to pass the Truth in Fur Labeling Act, S. 1076, by Sens. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, and H.R. 2480 by Reps. Jim Moran, D-Va., and Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., to require accurate labeling of all animal fur-trimmed garments, regardless of dollar value.

New Jersey's new law - a simple, but important consumer protection measure - will require all garments containing animal fur sold in New Jersey to be labeled with the type of animal fur and the country of origin.

Timeline:

* February 2006 - The HSUS announces widespread industry scandal finding raccoon dog fur for sale in the United States.
* December 2006 - Tests commissioned by HSUS investigators find raccoon dog fur on jackets advertised as "faux" and labeled as other species such as raccoon or coyote.
* February 2007 - Tests commissioned by HSUS investigators find domestic dog fur on unlabeled jackets advertised as "faux" fur.
* February 2007 - U.S. Reps. Jim Moran, D-Va., and Michael Ferguson, R-N.J., introduce the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act, H.R. 891.
* March 2007 - The HSUS files petition with the Federal Trade Commission seeking to enforce the Fur Products Labeling Act.
* Aug. 15, 2007 - New York Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal's legislation to require fur labeling signed into law in New York.
* November 2007 - New York fur labeling law goes into effect.
* November 2008 - HSUS files suit against a number of major retailers including Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue for engaging in false advertising and mislabeling of fur garments.



Background:

* The Federal Fur Products Labeling Act of 1951 was passed to protect consumers by requiring all garments with real fur to indicate species and country of origin on clothing labels, but a loophole allows some fur-trimmed garment to be exempt.
* Raccoon dog is the most commonly unlabeled or misrepresented type of fur sold in the United States, according to HSUS investigations.
* Raccoon dogs have been documented to be skinned alive in China for their fur.

We are calling on an interntational boycott of all Fairmont Hotels as long as Snowflake Furs is doing business out of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the Fairmont Banff Springs! We want them evicted!

There is an international attention on Fairmont Hotels as the management leases space for "Snowflake Furs" at the lobbies of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and the Fairmont Banff Springs hotels.

Please consider booking elsewhere in the future until Snowflake Furs occupies for leasing at these locations.

The fur industry has an enormously negative impact on our wildlife and the environment:
a.. Once the fur has been peeled off, it must be "tanned" in order to stop it from biodegrading. This completely unnatural process uses caustic chemicals including formaldehyde and chromium. These are serious environmental contaminants.
b.. Fur farms, like all factory farm operations, produce massive amounts of animal waste that is all consolidated in one small area. Animal wastes are high in phosphorous and nitrogen. When it rains this waste can wash downhill towards streams and other bodies of water. Other times it is left to soak into the soil, and sometimes contaminate the ground water

Most people do not fully comprehend the extent of brutality that is the fur industry which has no morals or compassion towards those whose skins have enriched them. On fur farms, their victims are kept in abominable conditions during their entire lives before meeting with the most barbaric deaths imaginable.

A shame on Fairmont Hotels promoting this outrageous cruelty instead of leasing space for fur-free designers such as:
Levi's, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and hundreds of more high-end, marvelous designers (please see link for the list of fur free designers:

Please do not book any business with Fairmont Empress and ALL Fairmont Hotels unless they stop dealing with trappers.

Canada's National Symbol the BEAVER and wolves, silver foxes, raccoons, lynxes and many more wildlife furbearers (including Chinese imports such as raccoon dogs from the most cruel fur farms) are sold as fur coats at Snowflake Furs at the lobbies of Fairmont Hotels: by leasing space for Snowflake Furs, this management promotes trapping, environmental damage and miserable conditions for animals.

By informing consumers globally, we hope to help compassionate citizens to make conscientious decisions before purchasing the offending merchandise or offer business to the fur industry's promoters.

I, the undersigned, call on the Irish Government to implement an immediate and total ban on fur farming in Ireland.

As of October 2009, there are discussions within the political sphere demanding for the ban of fur farms in the Republic of Ireland. If such proposal is met, fur farming should begin to be phased out.

I welcomed such proposal, many countries - including the whole of the UK - have already put a stop to this barbaric practice, and it is high time for Ireland to join them.

Animal Rights Activist Indicted On Contempt Charge

SALT LAKE CITY - A federal grand jury has indicted an animal rights
activist who refused to testify about the release of thousands of mink
from Utah ranches. Jordan Halliday, 22, served several months in jail
for contempt of court after he said he invoked his Fifth Amendment
right against self incrimination. When he was released in June, he was
handed a federal grand jury indictment for contempt.

"Are you willing to go to jail again for this?" Halliday was asked by
Fox 13's Ben Winslow outside the U.S. District Courthouse in downtown
Salt Lake City.

"There's no option, I guess. I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do.
If I go to jail, I go to jail, but it's not a priority," he replied.

The indictment accuses Halliday of willfully and knowingly disobeying
an order by U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell on two separate
occasions in March. Halliday was subpoenaed as part of an overall
investigation into the release of thousands of mink. He believes he
had a right to exercise his constitutional right to refuse to testify.

"I pled my Fifth Amendment right and they said it's not a bona fide
privilege," Halliday said, adding that he disagreed with federal
prosecutors.

The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) claimed responsibility for the
release of mink from farms in South Jordan, Hyrum and Kaysville.
Halliday and another activist were subpoenaed, presumably as part of a
larger investigation into the ALF and its activities locally. The FBI
considers the ALF a domestic terrorist organization.

In Scotland one of the most common uses of real fur is the production of sporrans. Recently the EU introduced a ban on trading in seal products but annually 45 million animals, including fox, badger, beaver and rabbit, continue to be brutally killed for their skins.

But fur is not just inhumane, it raises serious environmental concerns. A ranch- raised coat requires 20 times more energy than manufacturing a synthetic one. Fur farms produce massive amounts of animal waste, a major contributor to global warming.

Edinburgh the Fur-Free City has called a Week of Action across Scotland from 28th September - 4th October for everyone to speak out against real-fur sporrans. Communities in different parts of Scotland – including Borders, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and West Lothian – are gearing up to participate in the Week of Action, and thousands of people have signed the petition banning the importation of fur into UK markets.

International Anti-Fur Coalition urge Mr Ritz to ban cat and dog furtrade in Canada

Dennis Basso's Fur Protest Much Grosser Than Carolina Herrera's

We knew that if protesters came out to challenge Carolina Herrera, who didn't even use fur in her spring 2010 show, that they'd definitely be back for king of skins Dennis Basso. Actually, Basso is so loathed that he got two groups out on the street: NYC Animal Rights and PETA. The former replaced their blood-covered, mask-wearing drag queen with a guy (the same one?) dressed in a skinned animal costume and accompanied by someone in a skeleton mask, while a more subdued PETA representative in Alice & Olivia for Payless wedge boots handed out animal rights DVDs starring Eva Mendes. Two things odd about this: Has anyone ever typed the words "more subdued PETA representative" before? And also, we're almost entirely sure those boots have leather soles.

All over the world campaigning networks and organizations are fighting to make designers and clothing companies "fur-free". We think it is time to ask the same ethical stand to Max Mara Fashion Group, owners of world renowned brands like Max Mara, Max &Co, and many more like Maxsport, Marina Rinaldi, Marella, Pennyblack, Newpenny, Persona, Iblues.
In Italy Campagna AIP managed to make fur-free all department stores and some clothing companies like Stefanel, Diesel, Miss Sixty and Belstaff. Department stores like La Rinascente, Upim, Coin and Oviesse, have a big portion of the italian clothing retail and some of them have concessions of the most important designers and fashion companies inside their stores, forced too not to sell any fur products.
The Max Mara campaign is similar to those waged at department stores, or similar to the internationally coordinated campaigns that have made important fashion companies like Zara, Guess and Stefanel fur-free. The campaign is based on regular demos, communication with Max Mara's customers and a spreading boycott.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
First of all do not buy any fur and boycott all Max Mara Fashion Group brands' stores untill they will not be fur-free. Talk about this campaign to anybody you know and spread the message.
Contact the company and tell them what you think. You can either send them a letter, a fax, an e-mail or make a phone call. Each of these communications could be a lost customer for them, do not underestimate its impact.
Spread the campaign by distributing leaflets. You can find pdf leaflets in different languages in our resources section.

[IAFC] CAFT Ireland's Fur Farm Exposé Tour Report

CAFT Ireland launched the country's first ever 'Fur Farm Exposé Tour' on Saturday 4th July. This was to highlight the recent undercover exposé on Irish fur farms, which can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/naracampaigns

We travelled to every county that has a fur farm, tabled and leafleted in the major town near each farm, and protested outside all 5 mink farms - something that has never been done before, and something that we pledge to keep doing on a regular basis.


WHAT WE DID:

PART 1 - Sat. 4th - CO. LAOIS: An information table and display was set up Portlaoise, and all the shops in the town were given bundles of leaflets for their customers. We then had a protest outside Ireland's largest fur farm, Vasa Ltd. (Vicarstown, Stradbally, Co. Laois), where 45,000 mink are murdered every year. This is the 4th time we have protested this fur farm, and as with most years, a worker had to stop at the gates to drive passed us into the farm, as we 'named and shamed' him for the blood on his hands. Vasa Ltd. is owned by Una & Michael Heffernan.

PART 2 - Sat. 11th - CO. SLIGO: An information table and display was set up in Sligo Town, and as there was an arts/street performance festival happening while we were there, our display generated a lot of interest. All the shops in the town, including those in a popular shopping centre, were given bundles of leaflets for their customers. Then we went to North West Fur Farms Ltd. (Rhue, Tubercurry, Co. Sligo), owned by Kieran Lundy. Due to the fact that the Lundy's reside right in front of their death camp, this was one of the most direct protests we've had on the tour - there was no way they could ignore us.

PART 3 - Sat. 18th - CO. KERRY: For this event we teamed up with local group, 'Fur or Against?', in Tralee. We set up a table and display together, and both groups leafleted the town and shops. Afterwards we headed to Willow Herb Ltd. (Dromkeare, Waterville, Co. Kerry), which is owned by Stefan Kolon. The gardai didn't let us get as close to the entrance of the fur farm as we would have liked to be, but the Kolon family were left in no doubt as to why we were there.

PART 4 - Sat. 25th - Co. Donegal: For the finale of our tour, we spent 2 days in Donegal, where we teamed up with the Donegal Vegan group in Letterkenny. An information table was set up, and the whole town was leafleted. Out of all the places we've been to, Letterkenny was one of the most receptive - with all but one shop eager to take bundles of leaflets from us. When we finished there, we went to protest Tazetta Ltd. (Drumnalough, Glenties, Co. Donegal), which is owned by Sven Sjoholm. Sven, his wife Monica, and a number of workers watched us throughout the entire protest - they even used a camcorder on us and spent a lot of time taking pictures. We didn't care, but still found it quite strange! What are they so worried about, I wonder?

Anyway, after that, we went to Rolf Andersson Mink Farms Ltd. (Ardara, Killybegs, Co. Donegal), which is owned by Rolf Andersson. This is the farm you see at the beginning of the exposé video, with 5 mink to a cage, and faeces covered cages. The farm is the most hidden one we've been too, it's completely surrounded by trees. And they don't even stop at mink when it comes to abusing animals - they have an Alsatian chained up at the entrance of the farm. Rolf was just as uptight as Sven when he saw us, with camcorder in hand. I'm sure after decades of murdering animals went unnoticed, they assumed no one would ever stand up against them.

The following day, we leafleted Letterkenny again, and then a smaller group of us drove back to Tazetta Ltd. for a quick protest before heading back to Dublin.

By organising this tour, we weren't just representing our group, we were representing the whole country. It is time these farmers knew that the Irish people will no longer tolerate what they are doing.

We distributed literally thousands of leaflets in each town, and we've had a fair amount of media coverage for the tour too. Local newspapers published pieces on the campaign, and I've done a number of radio interviews as well. I even had a live debate with Sven Sjoholm on Highland Radio Station this week.

Our campaign is not about improving welfare standards, such giving them bigger cages - we are fighting for empty cages. It is unacceptable for fur farming to continue in this country. Just because it is currently legal, doesn’t make it morally acceptable. Everyone involved in this barbaric industry has blood on their hands and should be ashamed of themselves. There is absolutely no justification for wearing real fur.

We are not asking for an end to fur farming - we’re demanding it. The Department of Agriculture better be listening, because we will not let this barbaric industry continue, and we will not accept a phase-out ban.




For the millions who have died at the hands of these barbarians, we will never stop until justice is served.
