Mobile, Alabama takes steps to ensure speedy rescue of abused dogs and cats

Most city and county Animal Control officers in Alabama find their
hands tied when they are confronted with a clear case of animal abuse
or neglect, lacking any legal authority to remove the animal in
danger; due to a state law authorizing only law enforcement officers
or an appointed agent to seize the animal from the owner.

On Tuesday, Mobile City Council took action on behalf of dogs and cats
subjected to cruelty and neglect by voting unanimously to appoint The
City of Mobile Animal Shelter Director Ellen Lursen as an agent, with
power to order pet owners to provide proper care for their dogs and
cats, or to immediately confiscate pets in imminent danger. The
endangered pet can now be taken directly to Mobile Animal Shelter for
care and treatment while waiting for a hearing of the case.

When is a Rescue Not a Rescue?

Rescued turkeys at Farm SanctuaryCan a rescue be called a rescue if you purchase the animal? What if the animal would have been killed if you did not purchase him or her?

In general, legitimate animal rescuers and sanctuaries do not purchase animals. Purchasing animals supports breeders and supports a system that perpetuates animal breeding, use and suffering. For example, Persians and Friends Rescue "does NOT buy animals from breeders to save their life." Limbe Wildlife Center, which saves primates and other animals from the bushmeat trade in Cameroon, states, "We continually tell people that we do not buy animals, as it will only encourage further hunting." Pet Jamboree, a rescue group in Indiana says, "No, we WILL NOT purchase your litter of animals. We are not brokers. We do not purchase animals for resale."

This principle also applies to rescuing humans. Free the Slaves, an organization that rescues modern-day human slaves explains, "Buying slaves in order to free them encourages trafficking."

That's why I was so disappointed to hear about Karen Dawn, a vegan activist and author, purchasing two live turkeys before they could be slaughtered, and calling it a "rescue." She's not even going to take care of the turkeys herself. The turkeys she purchased last year went to live at Animal Acres. This year's turkeys will go to The Gentle Barn Foundation.

Then how do farmed animals end up at sanctuaries? The vast majority were not purchased by activists or the sanctuaries. They fell off of trucks on the way to slaughter, they were left for dead at stockyards, or they escaped from farms or slaughterhouses. And sometimes, hundreds or thousands of animals are suddenly in need of rescue, like when floodwaters in Iowa destroyed factory farms full of pigs.

Yes, the turkeys Dawn purchased are alive today because of her actions. But I wouldn't call it a rescue. What do you think?

AAP Primadomus opens in Spain

Almere/Villena, 25 November 2009 – The Dutch AAP Foundation officially opened a new rescue centre in Spain called AAP Primadomus. Dr. Jane Goodall, a campaigner for chimpanzees hosted the opening ceremony, with several guests attending from all over Europe. Primadomus is situated in the city of Villena, approximately fifty kilometers West of Alicante.

With the opening of the Primadomus rescue centre, AAP aims to increase its support for government institutions throughout Europe and assist in enforcing animal welfare laws. AAP has been looking forward to opening AAP Primadomus for a long time. After years of building and preparation, the rescue centre will offer a permanent residence for chimpanzees and other primates that have no place else to go.

Hundreds of primates and other exotic mammals throughout Europe are living in appalling circumstances. Every year, a lot of Barbary Macaques are illegally transported from Morocco to European households and many chimpanzees are still exploited by circuses. AAP cooperates with government institutions and other animal welfare organizations, assisting in the rescue of these animals. AAP’s rescue center in Almere, the Netherlands, does not provide enough space to house all the animals that need shelter. Furthermore, once the animals at AAP have been resocialised, it is not always possible to find suitable outplacement addresses such as renowned zoos or sanctuaries. The opening of Primadomus gives AAP extra possibilities to give discarded monkeys a permanent home.

Among the speakers at the opening ceremony were Dr. Jane Goodall, who revealed a commemorative plaque in celebration of the opening of Primadomus, the mayor of Villena, Celia Lledó, David van Gennep, director of AAP Foundation and Olga Martin, director of the project in Spain. The deputy mayor of Villena was presented with a commemorative plaque to mark the opening of a natural education centre just outside AAP Primadomus. The guests also had a chance to see how the ten ‘Donkey’s group’ chimpanzees enjoying their new environment. The guests at the opening included some of AAP’s financial donors and representatives of other animal organizations such as IFAW and WSPA.

Earlier this month, ten chimpanzees known as ‘Donkey’s group’ were the first inhabitants to move to Primadomus. These chimps were rescued from circuses, unscrupulous zoos and private owners. In AAP Primadomus, they can enjoy the peace and space that this beautiful centre has to offer. Situated at the foot of the Sierra de Salinas mountains, Primadomus will eventually offer permanent housing to approximately 150 animals from around Europe. A large part of the terrain will remain a nature reserve.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Nearly 100 dogs were rescued from an alleged puppy mill in Arkansas this week, and now they're in Washington. Rescuers called it one of the worst cases they've ever seen.

They spent 18 hours on the road to get here. The animals were brought to the District in a big rig. Eighty-three dogs and six cats were taken from a property in Lamar, Arkansas, which is locaed northwest of Little Rock.

"Like any puppy mill, this is the worst that humanity can do to animals-- these animals were in horrible conditions," said Dr. Gary Weitzman of the Washington Animal Rescue League . "Maybe the worst we've seen and we do a lot of puppy mill rescues."

In fact, it's the worst of 15 puppy mill cases the Humane Society of the U.S. says it has investigated this year.

"We've rescued over 4,000 dogs from these hell holes," said Scotlund Haisley of the Humane Society of the U.S.

The Humane Society and Arkansas authorities raided the alleged puppy mill three days ago.

"These dogs have been laying in their own feces and urine their entire lives and as you can seem, it's turning into an acid and burning their coat," said Haisley.

The animals were in chicken crates that were stacked on top of each other. Rescuers say they had no veterinary car, no grooming, and of they didn't get food or water.

A One-Woman Rescue Needs Help, PLEASE!
"Feline Hospice Hope"



A woman named Dee Dee started out small but her rescue, Feline Hospice Hope, has grown by leaps and bounds during the past year.

Dee Dee takes in feline leukemia kittens and cats who are going to be euthanized and allows them to live out their life with her. She fixed up several rooms in her home and all cats have it very nice there. They are all fully vetted and when they become ill she takes them to her vet's office for treatment, until the end. Dee Dee is an incredible person and takes excellent care of the felines she rescues. I know this first hand. She is very careful about keeping the healthy cats she has rescued and the feline leukemia cats separate.

Dee Dee recently received a call about a pregnant mother cat and was told if she wasn't removed from the mobile home park she would be killed. When Dee Dee went to pick up the mother cat, she had had her kittens, the woman who called Dee Dee said. After looking around under the skirting of the trailer where the kittens were born, no kittens were found. The "idiot" who had called Dee Dee had trapped the mother fourteen hours before Dee Dee could arrive. Dee Dee was very worried and angry, and searched in vain to find the newborn baby kittens with no luck. Finally, she had no choice but to assume the kittens were dead or had been killed.

She immediately took the mama cat who she has named "Beanie" to her vet's office and was told that Beanie has a broken leg. Radiographs were done

"Poor Little Beanie first lost her babies and now I was told that she has a broken back right leg. Do you think, Barb, that there might be someone out there who could possibly help pay for some of Beanies medical cost?

I now have 18 Leukemia kitties and lots of hhealthy kitties and 5 feral kitties and their 11 babies. I need to keep food on their plates and keepfresh litter in their boxes and I have no idea how I am going to pay for mama cat's medical bills! Any little bit would sure help.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas! I am praying for a miracle here. I just don't have this kind of money.
