US/Questions Mount Over Jackson Animal Kingdom

Besides leaving a musical legacy, Michael Jackson orphaned an array of
exotic pets with some of them unaccounted for and even his beloved
chimpanzee Bubbles depending on donations.

In what was once seen mostly as a harmless eccentricity, Jackson at
the height of stardom amassed a private zoo of giraffes, tigers and
other foreign animals at Neverland, his sprawling fantasy estate in
California.

Nearly all of the animals have been moved to new homes in the past few
years as Jackson's personal and financial woes worsened, with animal
rights activists saying some have become roadside attractions in
uncertain conditions.

Bubbles, once the world's best known ape who slept in the superstar's
bedroom and mastered his Moonwalk dance, has lived since 2005 at the
Center for Great Apes in Florida, the head of the sanctuary said.

Jackson did not provide financial support for Bubbles and, despite his
stated desire, never visited him there, said Patti Ragan, director of
the Center for Great Apes.
...
Lisa Wathne, PETA's specialist in captive exotic animals, voiced
particular concern about two of Jackson's orangutans sent to a private
owner in Connecticut and reptiles at a roadside zoo in Oklahoma.

She said Jackson's case showed why wild animals should not be kept as pets.

"All too often even people who start with good intentions, as Michael
Jackson certainly did, don't have the ability to properly care for
these animals," she said.

"And unfortunately in Michael Jackson's case he did apparently run
into financial problems that ultimately led to his animals being
disbursed to places all over the world. We don't know, frankly, where
most of them ended up."

AUSTRALIA'S ASTOUNDING HYPOCRISY

Dear animal friends. This alert is mainly for UK
animal friends. However if you do not live in UK but outside
Australia, we would really appreciate if you could write short
letter to the list of contacts provided at the bottom of this
email (at least to numbers 1, 2 and 3)

Australia's astounding hypocrisy - kangaroos used for tourist
promotions abroad and massacred at home!
Kangaroos are being used to promote Kangaroo Island in
London and other towns and cities in UK. You are probably
aware that the biggest land wildlife slaughter in the world
takes place in Australia - the massacre of kangaroos!
How dare the tourism authorities be so hypocritical !
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/06/25/2608019.htm?section\=business
Life-size kangaroo statues have been placed
in landmark locations across London...

G’dayUK 2009
is a series of events positioning Australia as an innovative and
thriving economy. The aim is to encourage British companies and
consumers alike to take another look at Australia as a great
place to invest in, work, holiday, do business with and
generally get to know... The kangaroos would be
very grateful if you can help by: a) contacting
sponsors & event organisers (list below) List of other
supporters / sponsors can be found on

Please note that
half of logos of the sponsors (listed on above website) carry
the image of kangaroo! b) attending some of
these events and handing out information about the truth how
Australia treats it's wildlife. While writing
you might wish to state something along the lines:
... You will not visit Australia, till you hear that the
slaughter of kangaroos has stopped ...Before racing off to
Kangaroo Island, which sounds like a fascinating place, you did
a little research into what is happening to kangaroos (the
national symbol) in Australia today... These amazing,
unique and gentle animals are cruelly hunted, their joeys are
stomped on or beaten to death, thousands of kangaroos have
recently been killed in the national capital because they were
in the way of housing and roads (although spurious 'science' was
used to say that they 'threatened' endangered species. How can a
kangaroo do more damage than a bulldozer?), they are constantly
referred to as 'pests', and they are now going to be sold to
China as meat!

How dare the tourism authorities be so hypocritical?
Australia needs to stop
'managing' and 'controlling' its native animals into extinction,
and learn how live with them and treat them with respect and
compassion before it earns the right to use them as an
advertisement ...

The Netherlands wants to ban the controversial anti-whaling organisation Sea Shepherd from sailing under the Dutch flag. Public Works State Secretary Tineke Huizinga said Friday she wants to amend the law quickly to make this possible. The American organisation Sea Shepherd has two ships sailing under the Dutch flag. The Netherlands provided the necessary certificate of registry for this in 2007, after Sea Shepherd had promised in writing not to use violence and to comply with the safety rules. Nonetheless, a number of incidents have taken place between Sea Shepherd ships and Japanese whalers in the Antarctic. Japan has repeatedly complained to the Netherlands about the Sea Shepherd. It appears difficult at the moment to take action against ships that do not comply with the rules, so the cabinet wants to speedily extend its legal options for withdrawing certificates of registry, according to Huizinga. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This can NOT happen. As a dutch citizen,i'm proud that the Steve Irwin vessel sails under the dutch flag ! Violence??? There's no worse violence than illegally killing whales in the Antartic Whale Sanctuary, slaughtering seals and skin them alive, plundering the oceans ! Sea Shepherd is doing the job in conservation, something that all governments in this world FAIL at !!!!! All supporters of Sea Shepherd Unite !

We write in protest against your proposal to withdraw the Dutch ship registry for the vessel The Steve Irwin from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. I refer to the article: Dutch Government to enact law to ban Sea Shepherd from sailing under the Dutch flag! Realising that tremendous pressure is being brought to bear on your government by the Japanese I would nevertheless urge you to rethink this drastic measure. The Japanese are breaking International Whaling agreements, they do so at will while the world stand by and do nothing, with the exception of Paul Watson and his Sea Shepherd crew. As an advocate of marine conservation I applaud the actions of Paul Watson, admiring him for his courage and integrity. Paul Watson is standing up to the piracy of illegal whalers. The least your government can do is allow him to retain his registration. For a nation like Japan to defy the entire world, without suffering retribution can only mean one thing, and I suspect it has something to do with the foreign trade balance between the Netherlands and Japan. Can money truly take the place of marine conservation? Can political pressure from a nation that hides behind the banner of scientific whaling truly take the place of marine conservation? I think not, and I believe that after due consideration you will agree with me. Your country has an excellent reputation in its fight against pet abuse. When all the whales have been harpooned into extinction, when the bloody seas bearing their cries crash against your shore, where will the Netherlands hide its shame?

VICTORY FOR WOLVES IN THE GREAT LAKES!

We're starting this week with very good breaking news: This morning we won a tremendous victory saving wolves in the Great Lakes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has signed a legal settlement putting wolves in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin back on the endangered species list.Without federal protection, the door was open to wolves being slaughtered at the hands of state agencies, livestock owners, and trophy hunters. The agreement is a strong positive step from an administration that has, so far, been disappointing in its treatment of endangered species in general and wolves in particular. In fact, we are still in court over the administration' s stripping of Endangered Species Act protection from northern Rockies wolves. More on that later. This victory has been a long time coming. In 2005 we won a court order striking down the Bush administration' s weakening of protections for Great Lakes wolves from "endangered" to "threatened. " In response, the administration removed all protection in 2007. We went back to court, and last year won a legal order striking Bush down again and restoring full protection. Then, to our dismay, the Obama administration bowed to the anti-wolf lobby, removing all protection again this April. We sued yet again, and today the administration agreed to reverse itself. Will the administration make another run at allowing Great Lake wolves to be killed? It's too early to tell, but we'll keep a close eye on them. I can only hope the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has finally realized that we will fight them to the end to keep wolves from being slaughtered -- not only in the Great Lakes, but in the northern Rockies and the Southwest as well.We couldn't have done it without your help. Many, many thanks for the part you've played in keeping these wolves wild and safe. All my best, and have a great week,
Kierán SucklingExecutive DirectorCenter for Biological Diversity
P.S. If you'd like to make a gift to support our ongoing work to protect wolves, click here. Our team of scientists, advocates, and lawyers will put it to good use championing protection for these magnificent animals -- and winning more victories.

OLD FORESTS REDD RAGE AND NEARTH REVOLUTION

Earth and her humanity need old forests to exist. And all enabling their destruction, including potential carbon markets paying for 'sustainable forest management' in primary forests, are legitimate targets for an Earth Revolution.
By Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological InternetEarth Meanders come from Earth's Newsdesk, http://www.ecoearth.info/newsdesk/http://www.ecoearth.info/earthmeanders/
For too long those feeding upon the trough of "sustainable" forestry have been perpetuating the myth that primary and old growth forests can and should be harvested using "Sustainable Forest Management" (SFM) techniques. Old Forests are key to ecosystem, biodiversity, human and the Earth System's survival. Along with other intact natural terrestrial, aquatic and marine habitats; old forests are the internal organs of the Planet and regulate the Earth System to maintain conditions conducive to life. Primary forests logged for the first time are permanently ecologically damaged in terms of composition, structure, function and dynamics.I am stunned, dumfounded and enraged at the wholesale selling out of the climate and forest, led by big environmental NGOs (BINGOs). The latest positive idea for an ecologically sustainable Earth -- Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Diminishment (REDD) -- to pay for ancient forest protection with carbon monies, is at this very moment being watered down to mean business as usual first time logging of primary forests that forever destroys ecosystems and habitats. Like "sustainable development" and "certified forestry", the REDD concept of paying for protection of old forests' carbon stores, biodiversity and ecosystem is being taken over by industry.Current thinking is that REDD will not primarily pay for avoided deforestation -- that is keeping and benefiting locally from standing old forests -- but instead pushes long-failed and mythical "sustainable forest management" in the world's remaining dwindling primary forests. Latest REDD proposals as part of the UN climate policy process focus upon paying for everything but keeping old forests standing. I am absolutely appalled at the environmental movement for rolling over on climate offsets in general, and their tolerance or promotion of "sustainable forest management" for the world's remaining primary forests, rather than strict protection. I am enraged and indignant. Well known NGO's obstinate support for Forest Stewardship Council's certification of first time primary forest logging as "well-managed", while implying sustainability, has set the stage for industrial logging to be falsely marketed as a climate change solution. On the back of NGO greenwashing, first time industrial logging of primary forests is now claimed to be beneficial to climate, never mind that most timber products are in the landfill decomposing within years, and that current and future forest carbon stores are reduced for millennia. Nothing fills me with such rage as the selling out of ancient life giving forests by greens and BINGOs. Under REDD+ UN climate proposals, sustainable forest management, clearing of primary forests to be replaced by plantations, and selective logging of never before industrially harvested forests, could all be granted carbon credits. To solve climate change, your tax monies are to be used to pay to log the last primary and old growth forests which hold and remove unbelievably vast amounts of carbon. This is like being against slavery and committing to treating your slaves better at the same time. Old forests make Earth habitable. The fact that such an ecological ignorant and ludicrous notion as logging old forests with carbon monies for alleged climate benefits is being entertained illustrates clearly the failure of Western democratic consumption system. Along with other political signals, such as ridiculously low carbon emission reduction targets being set by rich industrial economies, emerging economies refusal to reduce emissions, as well as a clear lack of understanding how these targets will be met within the dominant economic growth paradigm, all indications are that current prevailing economic and government systems are inadequate and are unable to respond to looming ecological collapse and end of being.Old forests are our home. We and many species have evolved there or nearby, and are utterly dependent upon their carbon storage, biodiversity, soil, water, wildlife, rain and other ecosystem processes they provide. Earth is faced with an unprecedented emergency as its surface is scoured of life and the ecologically cumulative biosphere collapses. Nothing impacts climate, water or oceans more than denuding natural forests. To advocate cutting down the last bits of old forests that allow us to live, to be paid for by money to address climate change, is an outrageous crime against humanity that cannot go unchallenged. I am absolutely appalled at the environmental movement for rolling over on demanding sufficient climate policy. The forest movement has been piddling about with certified forests, once off protests, demonstration projects and market campaigns for decades. Specifically, their promotion of industrial scaled "certified" or "sustainable" forest management of old forests, rather than strict protection and local community eco-forestry, illustrates the death of ecological science based free thinking adequate to solve the Earth crisis on hand. And meanwhile Earth continues to be scraped of its forest skin. The degree of corporate collaboration (including by BINGOS) to find ways to profit financially from ecological Armageddon is sickening. It is this desire for endless profit that has brought us to the edge of global ecocide. Any organization, individual, company, government, BINGO or other espousing industrial first time logging of remaining primary and old growth forests is a criminal and liable. They do not understand the imperatives of ecological science, and that our way of life is destroying the ecosystems required for our and all life. And as such they are legitimate targets for protests of many sorts. I have come to believe the only way to bring about global ecological sustainability will be an Earth Revolution to overthrow the whole stinking and unsustainable system of growth in economy, population and inequitable consumption. We are failing to maintain Earth's ecological infrastructure, and it is now time to seriously raise our game and only pursue what is necessary to ensure humanity and Gaia's shared survival. Human survival depends upon paying local peoples and governments to protect and restore old forests, while helping local peoples and governments benefit from them remaining standing. If REDD is not gotten right at Copenhagen (and ambitious short term emissions reductions targets set), than the only manner to achieve global ecological sustainability will be to overthrow the industrial growth machine. Any such Stewardship Revolution would be well advised to focus upon those that continue antiquated processes of burning and cutting Earth to death. Those scouring the Earth of biological life must no longer go unpunished. Whatever it takes, old forest logging and other industrial destruction must end now.Failure at Copenhagen and immediately after to protect old forests, put in place immediate emissions reductions, and urgently address over-population and inequitable consumption will mean our only chance of ecological survival is revolutionary action. If international efforts to address climate change instead intend to clear the last remnants of an intact global ecosystem, they will need to be resisted using all means necessary. We may or may not choose to wage war upon those we know are destroying being, but failure at Copenhagen will make violent revolution THE only way to save a habitable Earth populated by complex life including humans. For life and Earth, it is time to revolt.

HELP PROTECT ARIZONA 'S PETS FROM DOMESTIC ABUSE

Help protect Arizona’s pets from domestic abuse
Each year throughout Arizona, domestic violence victims risk their lives to protect their defenseless animals from harm. Research has shown that up to 48 percent of battered women remain in abusive homes out of concern for leaving their pets behind. Yet, sadly, Arizona’s current domestic violence law does not address this issue.
Senate Bill 1278 addresses this issue directly. In an effort to stop abusers from harming or threatening to harm companion animals, the bill encourages judges to include the animals in domestic violence protective orders. A protective order is a legal order issued by a court that requires one person to stop harming, stay away from and/or cease contact with another person or, in the case of this bill, that person's pets as well.
We owe it to the countless domestic violence survivors throughout Arizona to get SB 1278 passed.
Please ask your senator to support SB 1278.

HELP STOP DOGFIGHTING IN CALIFORNIA!ACTION ALERT!

Stand Up to Dogfighting in California
Sen. Ronald S. Calderon has introduced Senate Bill 318, a critical bill for advancing the welfare of both people and animals. The bill allows real and personal property acquired through dogfighting ventures to be forfeited to the affected jurisdiction (the state and/or local government agency where dogfighting took place). A forfeiture may only occur after an offender is convicted, the prosecuting agency files a petition and a court trial takes place to determine the appropriateness of forfeiture. Proceeds from the sale of these items would then be used in two ways: first, to fund local shelters that care for the animal victims of dogfighting, and second, to fund law enforcement efforts to investigate and prosecute dogfighting.

Dogfighting is a serious underground criminal enterprise found in both rural and urban America. This cruel and inhumane practice results in serious injury and death to thousands of innocent animals. For the sake of human profit and entertainment, dogs are beaten and chained, as well as fed gun powder, illegal drugs and even live animals. Many of the animals who are fighting, or are target victims of the fight, are stolen pets. In the end, those that do not win are either killed or left to die horrific, painful deaths.

When animals are seized for protective custody in a dogfighting case, they are often kept in a county animal shelter for several months or even years. Sadly, these shelters, many of which are already financially challenged, rarely receive any funds to cover the medical care and boarding expenses for animal fighting victims.

American Humane also supports SB 318 because a growing body of research demonstrates the undeniable link between those who are cruel to animals and also commit acts of violence against other people. Deliberate and brutal abuse of companion animals rarely occurs in isolated instances. Furthermore, children are frequently present at animal fights. When children are taught that cruelty to animals is acceptable, they are more likely to exhibit cruelty themselves.

SB 318 makes a strong statement that California will not tolerate dogfighting. It also shows that the state is committed to supporting shelters that care for victims of dogfighting, and to investigating and prosecuting this heinous crime.

SB 318 recently passed in the Senate. Please ask your Assembly member to support SB 318 as it comes before the Assembly floor!

Animal Rights On The Agenda in China!

China has come out with a draft of the country's first law on animal
protection. For the first time in Chinese legislation, criminal
punishment for animal cruelty is being proposed.

The proposed draft clearly delineates how animals should be raised,
transported, and slaughtered in a humane way.

It also calls for penalties and criminal punishment for animal abuse
and cruelty.

The draft law covers wildlife, farm and companion animals.

Legal experts worked on the draft for seven months. Dr. Chang Jiwen,
of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, led the team.

CHAINED DOG WITH PROLAPSED RECTUM NEEDS SURGERY ASAP!HELP!!!!!!

Here it is:
PLEASE READ, POST, AND FORWARD!!!
Boo has lived on a short chain starved and had never been de-wormed... After years of diarhea from whipworm and hookworm, his rectum prolapsed. He was taken to a Youngstown, Ohio heartstick "shelter" as a cruelty case but was rescued after sitting there for a week with that prolapsed rectum; bleeding and laying in his urine and feces. He is very sweet, friendly, and gentle despite all he has endured. He is also strong so I know he can get through all of this if we all help him!!! He also has heartworm but we can treat that after his rear end is healed. We need to get donations to get his surgery ASAP!! We took him to our vet for a "purse-string" surgery 2 weeks ago, as soon as we got him out of that shelter, and his stitches came out a week later. He then was taken to the ER vet and the same surgery was done again. Thursday the stitches were taken out but his rectum prolapsed again Friday. He now has to have that part of him taken off completely or have it tacked from the inside so it doesnt come out again. Both are major surgeries. Every a little donation can all add up to saving his life!!!! We do not want to euthanize him because of this but he obviously cant live like this. He just needs the surgery ASAP. If it gets septic, he could die. He deserves our help.
He is a wonderful friendly kissy gentle boy who just wants to be touched and hugged...He melts into anyones hands who pet him!
Here is a You Tube Video link of him:

(They've reserved the side room and also will have access to part of the outdoor area. Tavern Co offers several vegan options on their menu and a full bar.)

On Sunday, June 21st, the doors to Petland in Cleveland Heights, OH closed for good. After 3+ years of demonstrations, leafleting, letters-to-the- editor, multiple Cleveland Plain Dealer "Animals in the News" columns (BIG thanks to reporter, Donna Miller) with information about Petland, community mailing with puppy mill information, and even walking door-to-door to educate the community when the store first opened...it finally happened!

Although everyone's hope was that Petland would "go humane" and stop selling dogs and supporting the puppy mill industry, apparently this wasn't something they would consider. We firmly believe the HSUS investigation and campaign against Petland, combined with the efforts of Concerned Citizens Against Petland, played a critical role in getting people to boycott the store.

A huge THANK YOU to all the dedicated activists who supported their efforts and those who participated in the protests...through all weather extremes...to give a voice to the dogs suffering in the mills and educate the public about why they should always adopt rather than shop for a dog.

Hope to see you all there!!

ACTION ALERT!DON'T LET GENETICALLY ENGINEERED CROPS TAKE OVER!

Take Action http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/t/741/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1164
Ask the Obama Administration to protect consumers from the biotech industry! In the last months of the Bush Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed some bad rules that significantly weaken the oversight of genetically engineered crops. These rules are bad for consumers, the environment, and would allow the biotechnology industry to regulate itself. Can you demand that the Obama Administration ditch the Bush rules, and make rules that will adequately regulate genetically engineered crops? The rules USDA has offered further endanger your right to choose the foods you and your family eat and farmers' right to their chosen livelihoods. If implemented the rules would virtually ensure more contamination of organic and conventional crops, and would continue to allow the dangerous practice of producing drugs and industrial chemicals in food crops grown in the open environment, and in many cases even allow the biotechnology industry to decide whether their GE crops are regulated at all.We have an extremely important opportunity to have the Obama Administration create rules that could be stronger than anything we've had for the last 15 years. We need real regulation and oversight of genetically engineered crops that are being created and planted every day with new toxins, poisons, and drugs. Can you submit a comment now requesting that Obama's USDA scrap the Bush Administration rules and create real rules for change in the biotech industry?

FOR THE WHALES WE WEEP BEFORE FOREVER WE SLEEP

By Captain Paul Watson

From Funchal, Madeira, Portugal.

The sons of Adam descended upon the water

Without thought, devoid of love they began the slaughter

The children of Ahab baptized in hot gentle blood

Mercilessly seeking revenge for the ancient flood

.. ..

I am writing this on a tropical hillside over-looking the Atlantic Ocean. Behind me is the Pestana Casino Park Hotel on the island of Madeira. The 61st annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission is over. The hundreds of delegates have departed the island like guilty shadows back to their respective nations, leaving a foul taste and stench in the air over Funchal, from yet another IWC meeting that accomplished absolutely nothing.

After a week spent observing delegates to the International Whaling Commission in Funchal, Madiera, I have come to recognize just what it is that is missing from this annual bureaucratic orgy of inaction.

Whales!

The talk around the bar in the evening or at the tables in the restaurant during meals is your usual banter about football, kids, politics and the economy. I did not detect much concern for the whales. The African and ..Caribbean.. delegates in town on a Japanese funded junket in exchange for their votes, were more interested in the night life and most of the NGO’s were chit chatting about pretty much nothing.

The whalers were as usual getting stupidly drunk. I was most amused to see Icelandic whaling boss Krisj..ian.. Loftson trying to drunkenly impersonate the Jazz singer. It was eerie indeed to be sitting so close to such a serial killer. I had seen the pictures of him perversely shoving his entire arm into a raw open wound in a Fin whale. The man literally wallows in the blood of the whales and yet here he was sipping girly pink fruity drinks with little apricot coloured umbrellas. The contrast was chilling.

The entire conference was devoid of empathy, compassion and respect, reduced to purely utilitarian.. discussions that viewed the whale as nothing more than mindless objects to be bartered, and statistics to be debated.

Overall the impression that I was left with is that whales are some sort of vague abstraction and although they were the reason for this annual luxury fest, they did not seem to occupy much of a presence in the minds of, and certainly not in the hearts of most of these delegates.

As the delegates met and mumbled incoherently about all sorts of assorted nonsense in the windowless conference room, I was forced, due to being officially banned from the conference, into sitting around the lobby intimidating Japanese whalers or standing on the lawn over-looking the spectacular vista of the Desertas islands across the rich deep blue of the Atlantic.

I was recalling that in 1865, behind those very islands the Confederate commerce raider Shenandoah was covertly outfitted with the guns she would use to destroy the Yankee whaling fleet, when suddenly I saw a flash of white in the bay and a tingle of excitement ran up my spine as I saw a whale breach and spout.

There it was, a member of the most evolved group of minds in the sea, a real in the flesh whale and I wondered what that whale would think and feel about the collection of arrogant primates in the building behind me sitting around talking about his species and cousins as if they were little more than mindless unfeeling slabs of meat in the marketplace.

Although governments are funding scientists to explore the galaxy in search of extraterrestrial intelligence, they are spending nothing to explore the possibility of communicating with intelligent life forms on our very own planet. It occurred to me that even discussing the possibility of inter-species communication would be incomprehensible to most of the delegates in the conference room.

I was lamenting the fact that there were so few protestors appearing at these meetings compared to the thousands that once blocked the doors and threw blood on the Japanese delegates in years gone by. Even last year, courageous Chileans were carried off by soldiers as armoured vehicles stood guard with machine guns to keep emotion from contaminating the cold calculations of the discussions over scientific kill permits and aboriginal slaughter allowances.

Only two groups were openly opposing the slaughter this year in the streets of Funchal. Sea Shepherd crew members and Surfers for Cetaceans. There was not a Greenpeace, IFAW or WWF sign or tee shirt to be seen. The mainstream NGO delegates in their suits and ties had been blended into the domesticated uniformity of the delegate crowd.

Greenpeacers who once stood beside me to block harpoons and seal clubs were now dutifully boarding buses to have cocktails and polite conversation with whalers and swivel servants to discuss such mundane matters as compromises and reduced quotas, concessions and special cultural dispensations. It was plain that they had forgotten the horrific screams of the whales and the gut-wrenching plea in the eye of the whale for us to champion their cause before humanity.

Arne and Christine who flew in from Germany at their own expense to stand before the hotel with a banner pleading for the lives of whales and those sterile suits on the inside being paid to sip tea and pretending to be effective was an enlightening contrast. On the outside there reigned compassion, a human emotion, that the Portuguese police were determined was not going to pollute the goings on of those officially designated as dignitaries on the inside.

World class free surfer Dave “Rasta” Rastovich arrived and took his board to the sea to mediate on the chilly petty pseudo dramas of those in the darkened enclosed room of fears and jeers. He and his fellow surfers were the link between us on land and those awesome cetacean minds offshore.

When someone commented that it seemed strange that Rasta would come all the way to the IWC from Australia just to surf, the thought struck me that perhaps he was accomplishing much more out there on the water than any of the great pretenders on the inside with their spongy straw heads babbling garbled inanities about a majestic life form they knew absolutely nothing about.

Of course not all of them on the inside are unfeeling machines with their heads completely up their posteriors. They were divided into three colours. The blue of official delegations, the green of the non governmental organizations (NGO’s) and the red for the media.

The red represented a spectrum of postures from pseudo objectivity to propagandists with a sprinkle of genuine truth seekers like ..Andrew Darby.. and Mick McIntyre. The green represented another spectrum of diversity from banner wavers to socially acceptable activists and amongst the blue were politic..ian..s and bureaucrats who were not completely without feeling. Many of them in the pro-whale conservation delegations like Australia, the USA, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, Monaco, the Netherlands and New Zealand etc, were quite genuine in their concern for the whales but trapped in the crippling corporate and governmental controlled vice of IWC protocols that render decision making practically impossible. I’m sure that Austral..ian.. Environment Minister Peter Garrett would like to see whaling ended in the Southern Ocean but the political and economic obstacles tossed in his way force him to stumble and appear ineffective. United States Commissioner Bill Hogarth to his credit did succeed in saving the lives of 100 Humpbacks over the last two years and for that he is to be commended but he also failed to budge the dead weight of IWC uselessness. But did he ever have a chance? The Japanese and their little bought and paid for puppet nations have managed to throw cog after cog into the workings of the machinations of the IWC to the point that the entire organization has become moribund and for all intends and purposes – dead.

The rank smell left drifting over Funchal in the wake of the IWC was simply the smell of years of rot and decay as the cancerous zombie like body once known as the International Whaling Commission has wasted away into bureaucratic slime and internal corruption, stumbling sightlessly towards nowhere with the scarlet blood of the whales dripping from gangrenous greyish black lips.

This organization at the age of 63 is quite simply a dead entity haunting a different luxury hotel every year. Toothless, useless and covered in bureaucratic boils, administrative hives, and ulcerous corporatepuscular tumours all of it reeking of greed and ecological ignorance.

This emasculated dog and pony show stumbles tediously on and will meet next year not far from where it failed this year, in Morocco where the delegates from St. Lucia, St. Kitts and all those other silly Saint whorish places that dare to call themselves real countries holding a vote, will descend for yet another Japanese paid holiday, this time with hashish and camel rides.

And meanwhile the gentle whales keep dying as the Japanese monstrously blow their sensitive guts apart with the burning shrapnel of their insidious harpoons and the Icelanders, Greenlanders and Norweg..ian..s, like cold blooded Nordic beserkers strike grisly and merciless death into the mighty hearts of endangered Fins and Humpbacks and defenceless Minkes.

These delegates cannot see, they cannot feel, nor can they understand the enduring pain that we, who love the whales, experience when we witness the deaths of these gentle g..ian..ts, these great armless Buddha’s, these maritime music..ian..s and poets. Where we see intelligence, family bonds and beauty, those on the darker side of humanity merely see materialistic profit. For us it’s music and magic, grace and beauty and for those cold blooded others it is simply blubber and meat, money and power.

In the hotel where the IWC were meeting, Charles Hambleton of the Oceanic Preservation Society aired the film The Cove to any delegate who cared to see it and unfortunately most who did care to see it already cared. Perhaps if the Japanese, Norweg..ian..s and their globe trotting gigolos were strapped down and forced to watch the malicious mass murder of the dolphins they would be able to understand what drives the fiery passion of a Ric O’Berry or an ..Allison Lance.. (who freed 15 dolphins from Taiji in 2003).

If some of those delegates inside could actually have the opportunity to swim with the whales, perhaps they would understand, instead of saying as the delegate from Antigua did that she knew there were whales near ..Antigua.. because she saw one on television once.

How do we get such bureaucrats who speak bureaucratese to even begin to understand the gentle vision of artist Howie Cooke or the courage of a Sea Shepherd crewmember.

Most likely we can’t. Those of us who care about the whales find that we can communicate more effectively with whales and dolphins than with these alien suits whose behavioural patterns are leading the world to collective suicide. They don’t understand that if we can’t save the whales, we will fail to save the oceans and if the oceans die, then we all die, and all the great dreams of humanity will be blown away as dust in the winds of time.

And the Inuits, the Alaskans, the Greenlanders, the Makah and all those aboriginal communities that confuse the debate with their chauvinistic obsession to slaughter for culture, will they ever realize that the cultural values of the first nations, those other species who were here long before us should and must take precedence over the rights of any hominid to chew whale blubber in a world where whales are fast disappearing?

Why must a Bowhead whale, two centuries old, die in abject agony, just so a very small minority of people can continue to chew their fat pretending that their archaic cultures are still viable in a world gone ecologically insane?Preserving a culture of slaughter in a world of mass extinction should be the least of our collective priorities.

Preserving biodiversity in the midst of a major extinction event should be our greatest of priorities. These so called ancient hominid cultures were not wise nor were they sacred, and all human cultures without exception have contributed to the extinction of species. To allow so called aboriginal cultures to finish off the survivors is simply selfish, shallow, and short-sighted. To allow the Inuit to continue to murder and destroy the more ancient and far wiser culture of the whales is no different than if we allowed the cannibals of ..Borneo.. to have preserved their culture of culinary homicide.

To the Humpbacks, the Greenlanders are murderers, to the dolphins the fishermen of Taiji are ruthless serial killers and to the pilot whales the ferocious butchers of the Faeroe Islands are savage barbarians. The massacre last year of over 500 narwhals by the Inuit in Canada was a vicious crime against nature perpetuated by sadistic killers who hid behind the hypocritical skirts of political correctness.

.. ..

How do we even begin to communicate the incredible despair that we feel in trying to communicate the pain and suffering of whales and dolphins to a humanity grossly alienated from the living reality of nature and armoured in layers of anthropocentric fantasies that proclaim the human to be a divine legend in our own pathetic little minds?

The act of harpooning a whale, of spearing a dolphin, of clubbing a seal, are simply incomprehensible to those of us on the outside of these regulatory agencies. We are constantly amazed at the repetitive accusations of terrorism and violence from vicious killers as we seek to stop the killing. It is like there are two species of humanity on the planet – the ruthless anthropocentric killing machines who slaughter without mercy or remorse and those of us whose alleg..ian..ce is to the biocentric view that all Earthlings regardless of species, have the inalienable right to life and the pursuit of happiness.

I have heard the screams of dying whales. I have seen their hot steaming blood gush into the cold waters of the sea. I have heard the sickening thud of a seal club as it smashes the skull of a baby seal and I have seen dolphins, mad with fear, blood pulsing from gaping raw wounds as they desperately try to save the lives of their children from the insane spears and knives of their laughing human tormentors.

I have seen, heard, smelt, felt and experienced these horrors most of my life as I have done all in my power within the bounds of the law and non-violence to halt the killing, to exercise compassion and to promote an understanding of the rights and the dignity of those fellow Earthlings who suffer so tremendously from the blood-stained hands of my fellow humans.

I hope that next year will see the demise of the IWC. We need to remove this embarrassing posturing of an organization that pretends to regulate whaling and we need to replace it with an organization dedicated to the complete protection of all cetaceans, that will draft and enforce laws that will end the murder of the uniquely intelligent and socially complex communities of whales and dolphins.

The slaughter of these magnificent sentient beings has no place in the 21st Century, no place in any human culture and no place in this world of the homocene mass extinctions..

Somewhere, tens of millions of miles away, a manmade spacecraft is hurtling towards the outer reaches of the galaxy. Within that spaceship named Voyager, thanks to the wisdom of Dr. ..Roger Payne.. and Dr. Carl Sagan is a recording of a song by a Humpback whale. I wonder which voice, human or whale will entice a far distant intelligent extraterrestrial species? Will either whale or human even exist on this planet should visitors grace us with their presence?

And as for these horrific annual meetings, I wonder which voices will be remembered and respected hundreds of years, or even millions of years from now?

I smile to myself when I envision that song engraved on a disc of gold and released into the stream of infinity. Mick Jagger’s voice on that space wandering disc lamenting that humankind cannot get any satisfaction and the song of the whales bearing a message of magic and mystery to borders beyond the unknown.

Who will our own provincial history remember with respect? The whale killers or the whale defenders? If history is any guide at all, it will be the whale defenders that our ancestors will thank and not the villainous killers of such unique, graceful and intelligent sentient beings.

It will be the image of artist Howie Cooke gifting a mural to Funchal school children or Dave Rastovich surfing alongside a dolphin in the waters of Madeira or the ..Azores.. or Dr. Sidney Holt smiling in hope for a future for both whales and humans. It will be Dr. Bill Hogarth’s gift of a hundred Humpbacks to posterity and it will be Ric O’Berry walking courageously through the meeting at St. Kitt’s with the images of the reality of blood, gore and horror flashing in a nauseating flicker of delirium from a video screen on his chest. It will be ..Hannah Fraser..’s mermaid tail flashing like a beacon of hope at the Santiago meeting or little Skye Bortelli confronting Japanese whalers with children’s poems and art, as burly bodyguards stood ready to pounce on her as a suspected terrorist. It will be Peggy Oki’s thousands of origami whales displayed at the meeting in ..Anchorage.. or former Australian Environment Minister Ian Campbell returning to Santiago as an activist after experiencing the frustration of being a delegate.

The story of the IWC will be remembered for those who spoke for the whales and defended them and not for those who slew and destroyed them. Slavers, whalers and other serial killers, war mongers and dictators may enjoy power and prestige in the present but are invariably condemned in the future by more enlightened descendants. .

Where do we go from here? I intend to return to the Southern Ocean to mount a sixth expedition aimed at saving as many whales as possible from the illegal harpoons of the Japanese whaling fleet and if given the resources we will sail to the North Atlantic to see what we can do to stop the Nordic serial killers.

And if my body does not sink silently into the cold dark depths of the Southern Ocean or is confined to a dungeon under the shadow of Fujiyama, I will be back in Morocco next summer.

We cannot retreat. We can never surrender. We need to continue throwing documentaries like The Cove and television programs like Whale Wars into the faces of the ruthless practitioners of brutal cetacide. We need to continue to block the harpoons and we need to continue to sink outlaw whalers, and we must use our imaginations, our humour, our art, our music, our poetry, and our lives to defend and protect the graceful and gentle giants of the deep.

In the end we will triumph, we must triumph or at least we will have done all that we could with the resources available to us to defend and protect a legacy that we can bequeath to the future.

In doing so, we will have lived lives of honour and selflessness and when you think about it, what better endeavour is there than to devote one’s life to than bestowing the gift of life and survival to a species successfully protected into the future of our most wondrous jewel of a planet?

From dust we came and to dust we will go, but in between, we can create and fight for the light of beauty and truth against the forces of greed and darkness.

After all is said and done, the fact remains is that the forces of light were represented this year in Madeira, peering into the dungeon of darkness from the outside looking in, a reminder that a light of compassion still flickers within the heart of humanity, waiting for the darkness of the human heart to be illuminated with a new understanding that we are not alone on this planet, and that somewhere out there on the vast shroud of the ocean, in her mysterious depths, there swims whales and dolphins, and in their evolved brains dwells a separate reality and perhaps therein lies forgiveness for the lethal and obscene sins we have collectively inflicted upon their gentle souls.

For the ultimate truth is this – if we fail to save the great whales, we will fail to save ourselves and thus we weep for the whales in fear that if they disappear than so shall we – forever!

Namibian Seal Slaughter Put On Hold

Namibian seal slaughter put on hold while deal is brokered

Cape fur seals read and approve agreement. Photo courtesy Seal Alert-SA
Very good news awaited me as I did my usual morning Google news search while sipping my morning coffee. The slaughter of Namibian Cape fur seals, slated to begin on July 1st, has been potentially put on hold for two weeks while talks continue with a view to selling the sealing industry to a South African seal rescue organization.
The Namibian seal slaughter is now the largest commercial seal hunt in the world. It is a horrendously cruel slaughter, targeting babies still nursing their mothers’ milk. The nursing young are the primary target, as their fur is usually the most valuable. Older bulls are the secondary target, as seal penis is still popular in Asia as an aphrodiasiac. The pups are bludgeoned with clubs and then stabbed through the chest or heart and left to die a slow and agonizing death. The larger bulls are shot.
The news story states that Francois Hugo of Seal Alert-SA was approached this week by Hatem Yavuz Group, the sole remaining buyer of Namibia’s seal skins, with the suggestion that he and the remaining sealers be bought out. Talks are underway between the parties, and Francois Hugo is interested in bringing on board the Dutch government, which had been instrumental in securing the EU ban; De Beers, which had expressed its displeasure with the culling of seals; and potential financiers. According to Francois Hugo, however, the two-week delay is not as straightforward as it seems. He must have firm proof he can raise the $14 million US needed by Wednesday, July 1st. If he accomplishes this, and the sealers agree, they will put the slaughter on hold for two weeks while he raises the money. If he cannot offer proof of $14 million US in pledges, the sealers say they will begin butchering Cape fur seals on July 1st, claiming that China has indicated interest in purchasing a large number of skins.

This is slightly confusing. If China is interested in purchasing a large quantity of Cape fur skins, as sealers claim, then why are sealers and the current remaining buyer in Australia saying it is no longer financially feasible for them to continue with the slaughter and they are interested in a buyout from the rescue organization?
Regardless, this could be very good news for Cape fur seals in Namibia and action must be taken by seal-lovers worldwide to help make this happen. The last remaining buyer of Namibia seal skins has admitted it could not sell any of the seal products from last year’s slaughter, and the two concessionaires has indicated it is no longer viable for them to continue in the crumbling industry.
The tides are turning for seals worldwide. Russia recently banned the killing of seals under one year of age. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin denounced it as a “bloody industry” which should have been banned a long time ago. Russia’s Natural Resources Minister, Yury Trutnyev, called seal hunting “one of the most inhumane types of hunting in the world, which is banned in the vast majority of developed states.” In May the European Parliament voted to ban trade in seal products within the 27 member states. The Canadian commercial seal kill which ended this week resulted in landings well below the 2009 quota due to lack of buyers and non-existent markets. Now the sole remaining buyer of Namibian Cape fur seal skins is admitting it could not sell any products last year and the two companies holding sealing licenses have indicated they want out of the failing industry.
But this deal won’t be reached without financial assistance. It is reportedly going to take $14 million US to buyout the Namibian sealing industry and Francois is asking for donations on his website. Apparently he needs to receive this much in pledges by Wednesday, July 1st or sealers will begin killing Namibian seal pups. Please visit his organization’ s website for more info on how you can pledge your financial support to save the lives of thousands of Cape fur seals in Namibia.

HULL HELL-HOLE TO CLOSE AGAIN
Yet another track shuts as racing industry slashes budget

According to the Racing Post, tomorrow's greyhound race meeting (June 17)
will be the last at Hull
after an announcement that the track is to close.

The track reverted from a two-meeting a week schedule to one - every
Saturday - but, as racing
manager Mick Smith stated: "We've continued to lose money and Dave Marshall
(promoter) has pulled
the plug.

"We wanted to put on a carvery and all sorts of things to try to make some
money, but we had no
support at all from the GBGB and that, plus a lack of paying punters, was
what's killed us."

The track had closed previously in 2006 after becoming dilapidated, but
reopened again the following
year, after being taken over and refurbished by a local leisure company.

We hope the closure tomorrow will be permanent, as, according to our most
recent research, the
existence of a track like Hull is responsible for the deaths of as many as
500 greyhounds per year,
due to the demand it creates for these dogs to be bred and subsequently
discarded.

The track would also have been responsible for dozens of serious injuries
annually to greyhounds
racing there. For example, a post by a Hull trainer on a pro-racing forum
last month read as
follows: "At Hull last night 1 trainer lost 2 dogs, both suffered terrible
injuries 1 dying on the
track and the other having to be put to sleep....... ....How many dog's will
it take to get injured
or worse like last night before something is done?"

It comes as no surprise that the GBGB (Greyhound Board of Great Britain)
were unable or unwilling to
Support the Hull track.

According to another Racing Post article: "The GBGB has had to make 'a
savage cut' to its budget for
grants to tracks (from £2m to £486,000) 'to address a significant drop in
income'."

The total GBGB budget fell by almost £2m from £11.5m last year to £9.7m for
2009, following a big
drop in contributions from bookmakers, owing to fewer people betting on dog
racing.

Please feel free to forward/crosspost/ circulate this message.

THAILAND-SPONSORSHIP AND ADOPTION CAMPAIGN-HELP SAVE THESE DOGS!URGENT!!!!!

Two weeks ago I sent out an appeal to either sponsor or adopt Charlie and Tong two truly needy dogs who deserve a chance in life after suffering badly so early in their lives. Sadly we received Zero response from our supporters to help these two brave and wonderfully enthusiastic dogs.

Their plight has now greatly worsened. Dawn's Landlord has sold the house she is living in which she must vacate by August and there is no possibility of her finding another property that will allow dogs - yet alone paraplegic dogs.

If there is not one of you amongst our supporters which number over 300 who can help these two brave and loving dogs they will have to be PUT TO SLEEP.

They do not deserve this fate. They are happy dogs who are independently mobile and can be cared for by anyone who has grass or sand for them to walk on. They do not have to live in a cage. Their only Special need is a covered area outside where they can sleep at night and shelter from the rain. Apart from that they can live their lives as any other dog does.

This is not a plea to sponsor either Charlie or Tong it is a plea to ADOPT either of them. We know you are dog lovers otherwise you wouldn't have registered to receive our newsletters. We are asking particularly those of you who live in Thailand where the dogs can live outside easily and happily to search your hearts and offer either Charlie or Tong a chance to live. You will be greatly rewarded.

If any of you live in Hua Hin, Cha-Am or Pranburi you can easily visit Tong or Charlie and then you will understand why we are so desperate for any one of our supporters to save them. To re-visit these courageous dogs click

THE SHORT,SAD LIFE OF MINNESOTA'S 00FP8

The short, sad life of Minnesota's 00FP8
chronicled by Tag Wearer, Jared J. Karow
Hello,
Sometimes we believe there's nothing one person can do to change things but one person can be amazing. Jared Karow wears the Freedom Tag for a primate who lived in Minnesota and after considerable effort, was finally able to get the documents for the long-tailed macaque on his Tag.

Below is 00FP8's life story as recorded in lab reports and shared by her friend, Jared Karow. You can view Jared's actual letter and 00FP8's lab records here.

Please read on.....
To Whom It May Concern:

I am the Primate Freedom Tag-Wearer for 00FP8, a female long-tailed macaque that was held captive at the University of Minnesota for about one recorded year. During her time at the University of Minnesota, 00FP8 was held mostly within quarantine. Her origin was from Sierra Biomedical, a subsidiary of Charles River Laboratories, Inc. which is a multi-national conglomerate that is the largest breeder of animals for experiments and is one of the largest importers of non-human primates into the United States.

According to the Primate Freedom Tag 00FP8 was born in 1997, however the actual date and year of her birth is unrecorded, and thus unknown.
According to the documentation, 00FP8 arrived at the University of Minnesota in June 1, 2000. At the time of her arrival she weighed about 4.5 pounds. After ger arrival she was placed into quarantine procedures, she was tested for tuberculosis on June 9, 2000 and her left eye was monitored. The monitoring of her left eye lasted three days where the researchers reported that her eyes were neither swollen nor were they red. She was sedated and tested for tuberculosis in the right eye on June 26, 2000 where, afterwards, she had been reported as recovering well. Her right eye was monitored for three days where no redness or swelling of the right eye was reported She was administered 0.05mls pf Telazol amd 0.02mls of Ivermectin. These two drugs are used in the typical care routines of most animals. Ivermectin typically acts as an anti-parasitic, which is a common preventative routine and Telazol acts as an anesthetic. It is important to note, however, that this was the only time that 00FP8 received any recorded medications throughout her stay at the University of Minnesota. On June 29, 2000 she was tested negative for tuberculosis. A plan was noted to transfer her to the St. Paul campus where the vivisector's group would finish her quarantine.

After being transferred to the St. Paul campus, 00FP8 was observed on September 22, 2000 where her case was discharged by a veterinarian. On October 24, 2000 she received a tuberculosis test where she tested as negative. Her weight was recorded for the final time on this date where she weighed about 4.6 pounds. There were no other recorded visits to 00FP8 after this date. According to documnetation, she was killed in June of 2001, presumably on June 4, 2001 as the terminal study of 00FP8 ended on June 3, 2001. Her case was discharged by a veterinarian again on August 13, 2001.

Due to a lack of availale documentation, 00FP8's life will never be fully recorded. Her life prior to the University of Minnesota was also left unrecorded; however while using the records provided we can only assume that her life ended after five years. 00FP8 was allowed to live only a portion of her life, as a typical age of death for a primate of her sort is in the late 30's. It is rather unfortunate that her life will only be a vivid memory in the minds of those that subjected her to experimentation and confinemen, if even that.

Records of her confinement are attached to this document; hopefully they will provide a small documentaiton of 00FP8's existence. Also attached are the letters of correspondence from the University of Minnesota's Office of General Council: Records & Information Management.

As one may see, it takes dedication and patience to obtain records of this sort. May we never forget our non-human brothers and sisters that are exploited for vivisection, and look to the future for a day when we do not rely upon studies based off innocent creatures such as these.

For all animals,

Whaling chief says no guarantee of end to killing

By BARRY HATTON Associated Press Writer

There are no guarantees that negotiators from pro- and anti-whaling nations will settle their dispute within a 12-month deadline they have set themselves, the new head of the International Whaling Commission said Friday.

"I can't promise a final solution within a year. I hope at the very least we have the framework of an agreement at the end of that period," Cristian Maquieira said at the end of the IWC's weeklong annual meeting.

Delegates from more than 80 countries at the talks in Portugal's Madeira islands remained split between nations which support whaling and those that demand its end. However, they agreed to keep pursuing an agreement in time for next year's meeting in Morocco.

The stalemate, which has angered conservation groups, has lasted since a 1986 ban on commercial whaling.

Japan, Norway and Iceland together continue to harpoon around 2,000 whales annually. They argue that many species, such as minke whales, are abundant enough to continue hunting them. They are backed by around half the IWC's member nations.

The United States, Australia and the European Union, among others, want whaling to stop or at least be reduced.

Maquieira, a veteran Chilean diplomat who was elected IWC president Thursday, said both sides would have to compromise.

"In the final outcome, not everybody's going to get what they want. If they want to have an agreement they're going to have to swallow some very tough decisions," he said in an interview.

Maquieira noted an improvement in the tenor of negotiations in recent years. In the past, delegates have stormed out of meetings and environmentalists were not allowed to attend.

Conservation groups attending the Madeira meeting as official observers were mostly unhappy about the IWC's decision to extend the negotiations for another year.

"The culture of avoiding clear decisions, including by voting if necessary, won't simply resolve any problem," said Nicolas Entrup of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

Other groups, however, said they were encouraged by IWC's willingness to address climate change and other environmental concerns.

The IWC was set up by whaling countries in 1949 to oversee their industry but it now has to deal with 21st-century threats to whales such as noise and water pollution.

"The tone and substance (of the talks) reflect a steady drift towards the IWC becoming a conservation forum and away from being a whalers' club," said Patrick Ramage of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, a U.S.-based conservation group.

Fur Flies as Kneset Bill Threatens "shtreimel"supply

Fur flies as Knesset bill threatens 'shtreimel' supply.
By REBECCA ANNA STOIL

Although fur hats might seem like a distant concern for most
Israelis as they settle in to a steamy summer, it was exactly
such headgear that threatened to stand in the way of an
otherwise popular bill that passed its first reading on the
Knesset floor Wednesday.
MK Ronit Tirosh's bill to ban imports of fur products from
east Asia earned the rare support of the coalition but irked
haredi MKs who worried that nothing less than a centuries-old
tradition could be at stake. Tirosh proposed the private
member's bill after watching an investigative report on
Channel 10 news in which they revealed that products
manufactured in China and labeled as containing synthetic fur
were actually made using the pelts of dogs, cats and rabbits.
Tirosh jumped to the aid of the four-footed friends and
drafted a private member's bill that would forbid importing
furs or textiles containing dog, cat or rabbit fur from east
Asia. Any offender could find themselves facing a year in
prison. In her explanation of the bill, Tirosh explained that
the animals that are raised for their pelts are kept in
horrific conditions and that sometimes the pelts are ripped
off the animals while they are still alive.
Tirosh's bill was met with enthusiastic support from all
directions, and Agriculture Minister Shalom Simchon even
suggested that it be expanded to include all fur from all
animals and to bar imports from throughout the world, and not
just the far east.
One house faction, however, was less than satisfied with the
bill. UTJ Faction Chairman MK Menahem Eliezar Moses, who
represents Agudath Israel, immediately jumped into action,
fighting to preserve the round fur hats known as "shtreimels"
worn by a number of hassidic groups as well as by members of
certain other Jerusalem haredi communities.
Shtreimel prices are already high for many wearers, and some
have already begun to turn to synthetic furs as an alternative
to the multi-thousand dollar hats that are made from rabbit,
sable, stone marten, baum marten and American gray fox.
Tirosh, in turn, presented rabbinic opinions arguing that the
conditions in which the animals were raised and slaughtered
violated Jewish principles of preventing cruelty to animals
and offered to work together with a haredi representative to
try and find a solution to the furry near-crisis.
The bill met with a second unexpected hurdle last week when it
was pulled at the last minute from Wednesday's agenda as part
of the opposition's struggle against the government - even
though the ministerial committee for legislation had already
agreed to support it.
But a week late, and with UTJ opposition quieted, Tirosh got a
first taste of victory as the bill sailed through the house by
a vote of 32-1 with one abstention. Although no UTJ members
were present during the voting, the bill did earn the support
of a number of their haredi counterparts in Shas.

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it
is
violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860)

"The fate of animals is of greater importance to me
than the fear of appearing ridiculous;
it is indissolubly connected with the fate of men."

- Emile Zola (1840-1902)
