NOT IN OUR NAME: ANIMAL DEFENDERS INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR A GLOBAL STAND AGAINSTSPACE EXPERIMENTS ON ANIMALS

AND CALLS ON THE PUBLIC TO PROTEST TO THE US & RUSSIAN EMBASSIES

LONDON, Sept 24, 2010 -- Animal Defenders International (ADI), the leading animal welfare organisation that works globally for the protection of animals, has launched a major international drive to stop NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) from performing radiation experiments on monkeys as part of plans to travel to mars.

The ADI offices in Los Angeles have instigated a campaign in Congress to halt the NASA experiments and the London headquarters of ADI are co-ordinating a global drive urging people to contact the US and Russian Embassies.

The campaign has attracted the backing of astronauts, former NASA employees, and a commitment from the European Space Agency not to perform monkey experiments.

At the heart of the new campaign is a compelling 4-minute video entitled 'Space Experiments on Monkeys - One Giant Leap Backwards' which recaps the prior use of animals in space research, cites reasons NASA's irradiation experiments are flawed and premature, and presents viable alternatives to primate testing. The DVD also includes an exclusive ten-minute interview with April Evans, former NASA engineer who explains she resigned her dream job with one of the world's top space agencies because of NASA's radiation tests. Both videos are also being launched online as part of a major awareness drive.

Every member of the US Congress will receive a copy of the DVD and copies will be sent to the US and Russian Embassies around the world.

Tim Phillips, Animal Defenders International Campaign Director said, "These tests are cruel, unnecessary, premature and a waste of $1.75 US million of taxpayers' money. Our video shows that these monkey experiments have been criticised from every side, scientists, animal protectionists, astronauts, former NASA employees, and even the European Space Agency. We are not opposed to space exploration, but these experiments are cruel folly."

The video reveals the horrific nature of the monkey experiments which will include: Burns, weakness, hair loss, failing organs and nausea. It also points out that there are already a significant number of sources for data on the impacts of high doses of radiation on humans including the victims of atomic bombs, X-rays and radiotherapy, the nuclear power industry, and astronauts who have spent time in space.

Tim Phillips said: "Those in the space programme often talk in lofty terms that this is about making advances for the whole of humankind. We want the world to make it clear that this cruelty is not in our name, and there are plenty of people in the space research community who agree with us."

Cosmonaut Valentin Lebedev, who set a world record for time in space, describes the tests as "inadmissible for humane reasons" citing the wealth of data available from astronauts.

Jim Bates, NASA retired, formerly Co-Chairman of the JSC Space Radiation Environment Group (SREG) 1968-1970, has noted the decades of similar experiments on animals and said: "We have probably sacrificed enough monkeys for these data, something else is needed."

The European Space Agency's (ESA) Director Jean-Jacques Dordain stated that he and ESA categorically opposed and "declines any interest in monkey research and does not consider any need or use for such results." The statement confirms the unnecessary character of NASA's tests and reveals the uneasiness of a large segment of the scientific community involved in space research about the use of monkeys in experiments.

Tim Phillips said: "These experiments are wrong every way that you look at them. There is a wealth of data available and alternatives which include cell and tissue culture study, the simulated human torso in space, and the use of scanning techniques to examine neurological function in patients undergoing partial brain radiotherapy. Even if you ignore all of this, NASA does not yet have the shielding technology to protect the astronauts on such a mission, and this would determine any type radiation exposure, so these tests are shamefully premature."

Aerospace engineer April Evans resigned her position earlier this year as a space architect on the International Space Station (ISS) program because of NASA's decision to conduct primate irradiation testing. Evans believes this experiment is a major step backward for NASA's animal testing record.

"After much deliberation, I resigned from NASA because I could not support the scientific justification for this monkey radiobiology experiment," Evans wrote in a letter to Samuel Aronson, director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory, which was contracted by NASA to conduct the tests on squirrel monkeys.

"NASA needs to focus on developing space radiation shielding because both astronauts and hardware are at risk from the space radiation environment, an issue that will have to be addressed by all space agencies. Space vehicle radiation shielding is necessary technology for a sustainable long-term human space exploration program and scientists and engineers should be given the chance and time to advance shielding technology."

For more information on the campaign, visit: www.ad-international.org/NASA where you can view and download the videos and join in the fight to stop NASA's planned experiments.

Please address polite letters to NASA requesting that they reconsider financing such horrific experiments by writing to NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr, Public Communications Office, NASA Headquarters, Suite 5K39,Washington, DC, 20546-0001

Note to the editors
The White House statement on radiation shielding President Barack Obama declared in April 15, 2010: "after decades of neglect, we will increase investment -- right away -- in other groundbreaking technologies that will allow astronauts to reach space sooner and more often, to travel farther and faster for less cost, and to live and work in space for longer periods of time more safely. That means tackling major scientific and technological challenges. How do we shield astronauts from radiation on longer missions? How do we harness resources on distant worlds? How do we supply spacecraft with energy needed for these far-reaching journeys? These are questions that we can answer and will answer."

NC and Gassing Shelters!!!

Animal gas chambers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HL5X3AUQ4w

Cross posted from Facebook:

HSUS estimates 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the US annually. NC makes up a HUGE part of that- approximately a quarter of a million each year. This link shows kill numbers reported by shelters in NC, although many of the 104 required shelters did not report. Adding the missing shelters easily breaks 250,000 dogs and cats killed yearly.

Let's crosspost this. If HSUS estimates are correct, North Carolina shelters kill about 1/12 to 1/16 of the US total each year! Please help spread the word and ask more rescues to save these precious animals from NC kill shelters.

Please help save animals from our state's forgotten shelters. Many facilities are remote and get few adoptions. Some have few or no animals posted online, while hundreds of homeless dogs and cats wait to die. Send me a private message for more information about particular counties.
*Note: only gassing shelters are listed on this map. North Carolina has 100 counties and many more kill shelters.

Meet North Carolina's Dr. Death

Dr. Death Ralp W. Houser, DVM

Ever wonder why North Carolina has so many county-funded Animal GASSING and HEARTSTICK facilities?

Well, it's thanks to this Hitler incarnate, Dr. Ralph Houser, DVM, North Carolina Animal Rabies Control Association board member and owner of Carolina Veterinary Consulting, he MANUFACTURES and SELLS these gas chambers all throughout county-funded animal shelters in North Carolina! Well, no wonder they haven't made headway getting this atrocity abolished, this scum is lining his pocket with government money. How sick is this?

Guess what else he does? He offers seminars, classes to show how to use these devices and brings victims to each seminar and class. He GASSES and HEARTSTICKS 6 victims at a minimum for demonstration purposes. Dogs and cats are brought from local shelters of his choice tortured and killed in front of a live audience.

Here is a brochure on his classes and seminars.

North Carolina's Pet Population Methods
by Denise LeBeau

Peter MacQueen III is president of the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina and has been compassionately advocating on the behalf of the companion animals of North Carolina for over 20 years. One of his greatest goals is to see the abolishment of the gas chamber, a device that is still so prevalently used in North Carolina on the dogs and cats that can't find homes before their 'time is up.'

It's a tough topic, and Animal Control in most rural areas is just one notch above waste management as far as funding and resources go. Most of the general public don't even realize that gassing unwanted pets still goes on, let alone at their local shelter!

"Why do seemingly decent people ignore, or worse, condone, this mistreatment of animals in an animal control facility?" asks Peter. "You can't even dignify them by calling them shelters. Things are changing slowly, but not fast enough considering the lack of care and inhumane euthanasia that these animals face everyday. People have begun to take notice and object to this treatment, but the majority of people don't seem concerned. When complaints are made the government stonewalls or ignores it until complaints subside then it's back to business as usual. Also, there's so many issues concerning Carolinians today, from the environment to child abuse, the general public generally only fight for what effects them, their 'hot buttons.' Even the animal rescue community insulate themselves against the horrors of gassing," he laments.

To make matters worse, it is commonly believed that one person is responsible for the fact that shelters and animal control facilities are using anything but euthanasia by injection (EBI) in the state of North Carolina. That is Dr. Ralph Houser, DVM, North Carolina Animal Rabies Control Association board member and owner of Carolina Veterinary Consulting, who not only advocates for the use of gas chambers on companion animals but manufactures and sells them, too!

Dr. Houser has also ingratiated himself into the Animal Control community with his "down home" rural speech, and his "us against them" propaganda. Whoever doesn't like to see animals suffer needlessly before they die, is seemingly a bleeding heart liberal sissy. His tactics could be looked at as manipulative...reminding us of another time in history that deftly played upon people's fears. Like many who will urge people to resist change, he plays the game with stealth-like accuracy.

The guidelines he most often cites in recommending the use of gas chambers as an acceptable form of euthanasia are from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA,) which is viewed by many as somewhat outdated considering that the last report on this issue came out in 2001. The AVMA report gives clear cut protocol on the proper way to euthanize animals, and that's where Houser and the guidelines part company. He likes to use the AVMA report to sling around as some kind of shield, but when it comes down to implementing their recommendations for a humane euthanasia, Houser consistently refutes and contradicts their suggestions.

"Further more," as Peter points out, "no where in the AVMA report does it mention animal control facilities, shelters, or rescues for their use of gas chambers. It is specifically guidelines for use in a veterinarian's office. And it's estimated that about 98% of the animal control facilities in North Carolina do not have a veterinarian on staff."

Even more disturbing is Houser's seemingly nonchalant attitude toward the obvious suffering animals endure during their time in his gas chambers. He's been allegedly overheard at North Carolina Animal Rabies Association meetings talking about the number of animals you can shove into his chambers, this is not in accordance with the AVMA's report on the small number of animals that can safely be euthanized at once from gas. He also suggests putting puppies, kittens and sick animals in there too. Again a no-no from the AVMA, his words that have been conveyed to me were to the effect of "if the animal can take a breath he can be gassed."

The recent number of animals that have survived a gassing and either found alive when being removed from the chamber, or found alive at the garbage dump by civilians is alarming! It is believed that the reason Dr. Houser recommends going against the AVMA report is because the gas chambers quickly lose their argument of "cost effectiveness" when used properly. In 2003, Sampson County Animal Control adopted out puppies to a lady looking for pets. She took the pups home and they started getting sick. After spending thousands of dollars on vet bills, she went back to the facility only to be told that the puppies had been gassed and survived! She had not been told this prior to having taken the animals, it's hard to tell whether it was a mere oversight or callously intentional.

In subsequent inspections, it was determined that the gas chamber in Sampson County had been leaking “a citation was issued and that was it. It is apparent that not only is it inhumane towards the animals but it is dangerous to the shelter workers. The gas is odorless and it's physical effects are cumulative! Plus they are never inspected regularly, actually they're practically never inspected at all. There are 'regulations' that come with the gas chamber but they are not routinely inspected, and when the chambers are inspected “ the equipment is just looked at, it is not during a gassing procedure.

A number of states have eliminated or banned gas chambers but no state has banned EBI! Lee Hunter, Director of Animal Welfare, North Carolina Dept. of Agriculture, Veterinary Division was recently put in charge of enforcing the Animal Welfare Act. Hunter is allegedly quite friendly with Houser, and the animal control officers are all his colleagues. There are no experts on euthanasia in the department, and they are vying to get Houser as the certified euthanasia trainer for the animal control facilities of North Carolina. It is undetermined what Houser's qualifications are regarding humane euthanasia, other than his financial vested interest, and the fact that he's a self appointed expert; he is above rules and regulations and the Animal Control community trusts that he is telling them the truth.

But for Houser, it's all business! If an Animal Control decides to switch to EBI, he'll let them use his medical license to procure the drugs. It is purported that Moore County did this, and that there are allegedly other counties that did the same, Houser chooses the laws he abides by, by his pocket. He also teaches courses on cruelty to ACOs, and has also been publicly questioned regarding a demonstration in New Bern where he killed sixty animals during the class. New Bern is a small town and sixty animals is a lot for them to have at one time. The question is: what rules and protocols were broken to facilitate this demonstration? Perhaps either animals were not held the requisite three days, or animals were held longer in order to be put to death in this learning forum, but there is no concrete evidence to prove any misdoings.

Houser also allegedly advocates the use of another excruciatingly painful means of euthanasia: the intracardial (chest) injection, or as it's commonly known as, the heart stick. When used correctly by caring, compassionate, trained professionals it can be less traumatizing than the gas chamber. Unfortunately this is often not the case! There are three drugs that need to be administered at just the right time for it to be relatively painless. However, reportedly according to Houser, you can forego the sedatives and just go to the paralyzing death drug where the animal remains fully conscience while it slowly dies. Again cost effectiveness seems to be his main concern, or rather selling point “money is at the crux of all his actions, the welfare of the animals he has taken an oath to entrust does not seem to factor into any of his actions."

Taxpayers are the ones footing the bill for this cruel mistreatment, and if more of them knew that their tax dollars were funding all of this, more than likely they'd be outraged. It has been proven that there are cost effective, humane options available. The public needs to be better informed what is happening in their own communities. The sooner this happens the needless suffering will surely end.

Meet Grace - She Survived Being Gassed in one of Georgia's gas chambers.

Amazing Grace

Reported by WTOC:

You always hear cats have nine lives, but a Hinesville dog is starting on her second. Animal Control was putting her and three other dogs down, but after 30 minutes in the gas chamber, she still survived.

People who run the Liberty County Humane Shelter say they're not sure how, but they're hoping her story can serve as a catalyst for shutting down the gas chamber for good.

Watching her tail wag Friday afternoon you would never guess what horror this happy-looking dog had gone through just a day earlier.

Deborah Palpal-Latoc, with LCHS, says "It will never leave me. I have had nightmares and don't think I'll ever forget this as long as I live."

Palpal-latoc saw first hand. When a chamber filled with carbon dioxide failed to kill the two year old dog, she helped pull her out of the cage and get her to a veterinarian.

"the dog above her -- it's bodily fluids were dripping all over her," recalls Palpal-Latoc with tears in her eyes. "And she was cowering and scared and foaming at the mouth and trying to get out."

Now the dog, who's since been named "Amazing Grace," is serving as an example.

People at the humane shelter say gas simply isn't a humane way to euthanize stray dogs.

America's Dirty Little Secret and Deepest Shame.........

Locked away like prisoners, in cement cells, they lay. Amidst their pain and sadness with gentle eyes they wait. Silenced forever. They die. And for what crime? No crime, they are just homeless.

Not even executed humanely as in the worst of criminals. Instead, piled into gas chambers one on top of another, to end it all, in the cruelest of manners. And for what crime? No crime, they are just homeless.

In their peaceful hearts, they yearn only for acceptance, a needle is plunged. Target practice for the inexperienced. Will they complain? Never. And for what crime? No crime, they are just homeless.

We, in America impose such sentences of depravity and inhumanity not even on condemned criminals, but instead on animals. Why? What crime? No crime, they are just homeless.

Do you love a companion animal....do you love a pet? Then pass it on!

Scientists at NASA want to blast up to 28 squirrel monkeys with a massive
dose of gamma rays in order to "simulate" the space radiation that they
would be exposed to if they were humans on a three-year mission to Mars.

The more than two dozen monkeys in NASA's crude experiment will be zapped
with a massive dose of radiation at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long
Island, New York, and then spend the rest of their lives _condemned to a
laboratory at Harvard's McLean Hospital_
(http://www2.peta.org/site/R?i=dg7pOQOL3I4-46HS_zssZQ..) where they'll be enlisted in a never-ending series of
experiments to assess how the radiation devastates their brains and
bodies. Although NASA has repeatedly told the media that these monkeys won't be
killed, it left out the detail that earlier radiation experiments that NASA
has conducted on monkeys caused the animals to suffer from fatal types of
cancer, including brain tumors.

Please join PETA in urging NASA to terminate its plans to conduct
radiation experiments using monkeys. Ask the agency to use available, modern in
vitro and clinical research methods that can be used to study the effects of
space radiation on the human body.

When: Friday, December 4, 12 noon—1 p.m.
Where: McLean Hospital, 115 Mill St., Belmont, Mass.

This demonstration will include a visual aspect, with people sitting in
cages. If you would like to volunteer to be in a cage—or if you want more

Bardot pleas for an end to animal slaughter

The legendary French movie star turned animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot has written to Nepal's president urging him to stop a mass animal sacrifice from going ahead next week. She has also appealed to the government of Catalonia to back a campaign to ban bullfighting in the north-eastern Spanish region.

Bardot, who quit the film world in 1973 and subsequently set up the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals has urged President Ram Baran Yadav to outlaw the sacrificial killings at the altar of Hindu goddess of power, Gadhimai, in Bara district.

In her letter, the 75-year-old Bardot called the practice "violent, cruel and inhumane".

This year, the temple authorities say 500,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and pigeons will be sacrificed at the Gadhimai fair which is held every five years.

"I personally find it hard to imagine that your heart can withstand such cruelty, knowing that you, being the head of the country, are ultimately responsible, " said Bardot in her letter to the president.

"I have dedicated my life to protect animals and the best gift I could receive for this life-long struggle would be the announcement of the stopping of ritual sacrifice of animals."

Bardot said she wrote to the prime minister last year and never received an answer.

The authorities are again turning a deaf ear to Bardot's pleas.

There has been no response from the president's office while organisers say the mass sacrifice, which attracts Hindu devotees from across Nepal and from neighbouring India, is a centuries-old religious tradition that should be allowed to continue.

Last month, renowned Indian animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi also urged the prime minister to stop the axing of thousands of birds and animals in the cruellest conditions imaginable. But the government said it would not ban the festival for fear of hurting Hindu religious sentiments.

(Photo: DR)
Bardot has also been trying to convince the Catalan government to back a campaign to ban bullfighting.

The Popular Legislative Initiative, which has gathered 180,000 signatures, calls for a change in Catalonia's animal protection law, which bans killing or mistreating animals in shows except in the case of bullfights.

It is to be examined by the regional parliament in Barcelona in mid-December and, if it passes, Catalonia would become the first region of Spain to outlaw bullfighting.

In a letter to the Catalan government, Bardot said it was "strange and paradoxical that the (Catalonian) Socialist Party (PSC) opposes direct democracy."

Bullfighting is "an incredibly sadistic spectacle" and the PSC's position is "an insult to the formidable popular campaign which has been observed in Catalonia," she said in the letter.

Last week, Bardot also wrote to the European Union urging them to institute a Vegetarian Day as a part of the battle against global warming.

"A few weeks before the Copenhagen climate summit, I would like to draw your attention to the need to question cattle-farming, whose effects on the environment are of concern," she wrote.

"If 'developed' nations were to reduce their meat consumption, there would be less famine, which kills almost six million children each year.

"Our collective duty is to act at all levels, including by promoting a vegetarian diet. A European 'Vegetarian Day' would be a strong symbol."

Bull-killing case postponed

An urgent court application to stop the Ukweshwama ritual during which men kill bulls with their bare hands was postponed to December 1 on Tuesday to allow King Goodwill Zwelithini and other respondents to file their papers.

Animal Rights Africa (ARA) went to the Pietermaritzburg High Court to stop the ritual, which is scheduled to take place on December 5 at Zwelithini's palace in Nongoma. ARA argues that the manner in which the bulls are killed is cruel.

Other respondents in the matter are the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka, the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Zweli Mkhize, and the province's MEC for Local Government, Housing and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube. - Sapa

Ducks victims in animal cruelty case

CHANGHUA, Taiwan -- Some ducks were killed due to poison
contamination, while some are being tortured to death. Changhua County
police yesterday launched investigation into animal cruelty after
local residents reported the ducks living in a park lake shot with
arrows, according to ETTV news channel.

The police suspect at least three culprits were involved in the
torture resulting in the death of one duck and the injuries of four
others. One of the local residents saw people approached the lake in
the night and attacked the ducks with”blowing arrows” working like air
guns.

Man responsible for 1 of largest animal cruelty cases in U.S.sentenced

(Mountain Home, AR) -- A man responsible for one of the largest animal
cruelty cases in the U.S. has been sentenced.

A Baxter County, Arkansas judge gave 45-year-old William Henry Hanson an
eight month prison term as well as a nearly $20,000 fine.

Hanson and his wife Tammy were convicted of animal cruelty in January
2006. They became fugitives when they fled Arkansas before sentencing.

The pair was tracked down in Vermont this past summer, where they had been
living under assumed names. Tammy was taken into custody there in
mid-July and extradited back to Arkansas. She has since been sentenced to one
year in county jail. That's the maximum sentence for animal cruelty. William
was caught in Missouri in mid-September.

The Humane Society spent more than $110,000 in the case. It used hundreds
of volunteer hours to care for more than 500 animals that were kept in
deplorable conditions.

A Dog Has Died—Where Are the Michael Vick Haters?

by Calvin W Boaz Calvin W Boaz
This past Thursday, Uga VII, the four-year-old mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs, passed away from an apparent heart attack.

Based on the outrage dog lovers expressed when Michael Vick was reinstated by the NFL, I was expecting a public outcry demanding the banning of animal mascots at college sporting events. However, all I heard was statements of what a loss it was for University of Georgia fans everywhere.

An animal dies, and people feel bad for the humans who will no longer see a dog sit in the hot sun for at least three hours—it makes perfect sense to me.

There is no proof that the heart attack was brought on by the dog attending football games, but the fact remains that the use of animals at college football games is a clear example of animal cruelty.

The various Ugas may travel in air conditioned dog houses and sit on bags of ice during games, but the fact remains that the English Bulldog is a breed that is susceptible to heat stroke.

I doubt any of the Ugas were asked if they wanted to be a mascot for a football team. If I was a bulldog, I may want to root for Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, or Mississippi State, but certainly I would despise cheering for Georgia.

Not only is the practice of having live creatures at football games bad for the animal, is also dangerous for people. In 1996, Uga V attacked Auburn wide receiver Robert Baker. The first time Ralphie, a buffalo, was used at a Colorado football game, she broke free from her harness and trampled one of her handlers.

If live animals are not seen at baseball or soccer games, there is certainly no need for them at football games. You don't see them at college basketball games, although their presence would force ball boys to do a better job of wiping sweat off the floor if they also had to clean up animal excrement.

When I want to see animals parading around, I go to a zoo, not a football game.

It is not only in college football that so-called animal lovers turn a "blind eye" to animal cruelty in sports.

The thump created by Eight Belles, the 2008 runner-up in the Kentucky Derby, falling to the ground after breaking both front ankles in the race was much louder than the minuscule displays of protest that occurred afterwards.

In 2007, racetracks in California and New York combined to average than one thoroughbred death for every day of the year. Very few people seem to be bothered by the fact that a thoroughbred is forced to race at high speeds although their bones are thinner than most breeds.

There is not much outrage today about giving horses anabolic steroids just like there was not much concern in the 70's and 80's over doping them to hide sore limbs on the day of a race.

I believe there wasn't anyone demanding the abolishment of polo when 21 horses died in Wellington, FL in April 2009 because a dietary supplement they were given was improperly mixed. There is no time to allow horses to recover naturally after vigorous exercise when they are so desperately needed for the next match.

Thousands of greyhounds used in racing are killed each year, and there are not enough homes available for all of those discarded when they are no longer fast enough. Where were the protests in 2002 when the remains of approximately 3,000 greyhounds from Florida racetracks were discovered on the property of a former racetrack security guard who had been “retiring” unwanted greyhounds with a rifle for more than 40 years?

At least three dogs died in each of the last two Iditarod Trail Sled Dog events. In August of this year, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo was accused of refusing to give medical care to its injured animals.

It is very confusing trying to figure out why dog fighting is against the law, but other forms of animal cruelty are allowed to occur without much protest.

I guess there isn't enough money or entertainment involved in dog fighting to turn it into a legitimate sport. Long-standing traditions have to continue although they are based on ignorance and stupidity.

The people against Vick want you to believe that their anger towards him is because they are sensitive to the poor treatment of animals while the truth is that the outrage is actually more deeply rooted in the enviousness they have for athletes and the money they make.

Pig Cruelty Shown At Swedish Farms

Swedish Radio News has published disturbing pictures taken at a pig farm by an animal rights group which show the sort of scenes of animal cruelty highlighted in Denmark back in May this year.

The Animal Rights Alliance say they have evidence of other farms carrying out flagrant breaches of Sweden's tough animal protection laws.

Listen to Kris Boswell's report
Swedes have always prided themselves that when it comes to meat, buying Swedish is best. Confidence has always been high in the stringent quality checks regarding the living conditions of animals raised at Swedish farms and their subsequent journey to the kitchen table.

Back in May this year Swedish Radio News broadcast a report that lambasted the cruel methods used to raise pigs in neighbouring Denmark. The critics said that Danish bacon might be cheap but at what cost to the animal?

Now though an animal rights group in Sweden has filmed disturbing images taken secretly at a pig farm which show the sort of scenes of animal cruelty highlighted in Denmark - cramped pig pens, lack of food, the animals covered in sores and even eating a dead pig on the floor.

Swedish radio news which was given the tape, says the film is genuine and received no comment when contacting the farmer involved, Lars Hultström, who is chairman of the association for Sweden's livestock farmers, Swedish meats.

And the group, The Animal Rights Alliance say their film is not an isolated incident, they've filmed at other farms in the country which also breach Sweden's tough animal rights laws.

Now the media is investigating Sweden's animal health inspection system which has recently changed authorities and is looking into just how many times livestock farms are inspected every year.

Before the beginning of the year, when the responsibility for the controls shifted from the municipality to the county council, Lars Hultsröm's farm was inspected every year.

"I think last time was January 2008 and it was I who carried out that inspection. There was nothing bad to report then,”said Monica Ängehult, responsible for these inspections in Flen municipality until 2009. The only complaint she ever remember having on the farm was a lack of straw.

Ängehult is since 2009 working with the same kind of inspections on county level and she says that the authority is planning a visit to the farm on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Lars Hultstöm has been unavailable for comments all Tuesday but on his mobile phone answer service he says that he is planning a "time-out due to recent events". He says that the time out will last until the investigation has been carried through- something that he welcomes.

"I have nothing to hide," he says on the recorded message.

Hultström's time-out is from his post as chairman of the Swedish Farmers Association, as well as from the company Swedish Animal Healthcare. The latter handles the veterinary care of the animals at the farm, and CEO Jan Åke Robertsson, told Swedish news agency TT that they had already been to the farm Tuesday morning.

After giving medical treatment to the sick animals, and putting down those seriously ill, there is nothing more that can be remarked on the health of the pigs. He also said that the lack of straw and the filth is due to a technical failure, but that this is not enough to excuse conditions on the farm.

According to Robertsson, the pigs were not in the regular pens, but in a treatment pen at the time they were filmed. The staff at the farm were right in isolating them, but conditions were terrible, he said.

"This is very serious. Every case like this is an unfortunate incident and reflects badly on all those that daily and hourly look after their pigs, upholding the standard so unique for Sweden," he said to TT.

Pet worker guilty; gets probation for drowned rabbits

A Ravenna woman, whose Facebook photo with two drowned rabbits
garnered national attention, was sentenced today to probation.

Liz Carlisle, 20, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of animal
cruelty. She also received a $250 fine and will perform 120 hours of
community service.

She was sentenced by Akron Municipal Judge Stephen Fallis in a
courtroom devoid of reporters and news cameras.

Fallis, who was defeated in his election bid Nov. 3, could have
sentenced Carlisle to 180 days in jail.

In earlier court appearances, media cameras and animal rights
protesters hounded Carlisle and her family inside and outside the
Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center.

Foie gras served at Alex Salmond’s Bute House-Action Alert from Viva UK!

Stop foie-gras being sold at Bute House
Viva! has discovered that the First Minister of Scotland – Alex Salmond – has been serving foie-gras at official dinners, even though its production has been condemned by his own Government – and it would be illegal to produce in Scotland. See the Viva! and Sunday Times expose here.
Please write to Mr Salmond and ask him to keep torture off the menu at Scottish political events. Use our pre-prepared email, or write your own.
Email: scottish.ministers@scotland.gsi.gov.uk
"Dear First Minister,I am very disappointed to read that you have served foie-gras at your official residence, Bute House – and I respectfully ask you to refrain from doing so in the future.
Foie-gras is the grossly enlarged liver of a duck or goose and is essentially a disease, marketed as a delicacy. Birds raised for this 'gourmet' cruelty are force-fed enormous quantities of food through a long metal pipe, three times a day. This process of deliberate and painful overfeeding continues for up to a month by which time the birds' livers have swelled to ten times their normal size. Every year, around a million ducks die during this period of force-feeding.
Foie-gras is not produced in Britain, as the Government has made it clear that its production would contravene existing animal welfare regulations. Therefore it is sadly ironic that it has found its way to your dinner table. It is a strange way to represent Scottish hospitality – and its inclusion on the menu appears to suggest you approve of the cruel methods of production. I hope this is not the case.
Please can you assure me that foie-gras will be off the menu at Bute House in the future?
Yours faithfully”

Ales Salmond has been criticised for serving foie gras at official dinners even though the dish is condemned as cruel by his own government.

Production of the pâté, which involves enlarging the livers of ducks and geese by force-feeding them, breaches animal welfare law in Scotland.

Foie gras it has been banned by several leading high street stores including Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. The Prince of Wales has also removed it from the menu at his residences.

However, Salmond, who is on good terms with the prince, has twice offered guests the dish this year at his official residence, Bute House.

In February, during a function for Chinese visitors, chefs served pan-roasted foie gras, pumpkin purée and truffle and Madeira jus.

At a dinner for members of the Scottish business community, the same month, guests were offered roasted cannon of fillet, oxtail and foie gras-filled dumpling.

Justin Kerswell, the campaigns manager for Viva, an animal welfare charity, said he was astonished that the first minister had allowed foie gras to appear on the menu.

“It’s sickening to think that ducks and geese are suffering the pain and terror of forcefeeding to grease the country’s diplomatic matters — especially as it’s a cruelty so abject it would be illegal to produce here,” he said.

Martin Shaw, the star of the BBC drama Inspector George Gently and the actress Jenny Seagrove, both of whom are Viva supporters, said there was no place for the dish in Britain.

“The production of foie gras is one of the cruellest and most degrading forms of animal torture. We should affirm our humanity by banning its use,” said Shaw.

Seagrove added: “Ducks and geese have been torn from the wild, and forced into cages so small they can’t even move their wings where they endure the pain and the terror of force- feeding. And for what? An unspeakably cruel dish masquerading as a delicacy.”

The force-feeding of geese and ducks to harvest their fattened livers has been banned in many countries besides Britain, including Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Czech republic, Finland, Poland, Italy, Israel. Ben Bradshaw, when UK animal welfare minister, called for a consumer boycott of the product.

While it is natural for migratory birds to gorge themselves to sustain their energy during long flights, opponents of foie gras say the delicacy involves unacceptable cruelty because birds are restrained while metal tubes force grain down their throats.

A Scottish government spokeswoman said that foie gras could not be legally produced in Scotland: “The methods of force-feeding used would create serious animal welfare concerns and would be considered to be a breach of the Welfare of Farmed Animals (Scotland) Regulations 2000.”

Critics complain that on some farms an elastic band is placed around the bird’s neck to prevent it retching up the food, with ducks force-fed up to 1lb per day and geese up to 2lb per day.

Critics say force-fed birds can suffer from disease and injuries including heart disorders, tearing of the intestines and rupture of liver cell membranes.

Spanish farmers have produced what they describe as an “ethical" version where the birds are allowed to overeat by themselves before being slaughtered. But this accounts for a tiny proportion of foie gras, which is mainly produced in France, Hungary and China.

A spokesman for Alex Salmond said: “The contents of the two menus were provided by an outside Scottish catering company, not at the request of ministers, and ministers have issued instructions that Scottish produce should be served at such engagements.” FULL ARTICLE:

Animal cruelty linked to disorder

THREE children responsible for the torture and killing of a baby
possum at the weekend could be headed for lives of crime, according to
child psychologist Dr John Irvine.

Two boys, believed to be around 13 years old, and another as young as
seven, were witnessed removing a baby possum from a nest in Wagga's
Botanic Gardens on Saturday afternoon before taping the animal to a
tree and beating it to death.

Dr Irvine believes cruelty towards animals in children can often be an
indication of a serious psychological disorder best diagnosed by a
child psychologist.

"The sad fact is that the majority of criminals are identifiable early
in life as having a conduct disorder," he said.

"Cruelty to animals in school-aged kids is just one of the symptoms of
a problem we call conduct disorder."

Action Alert: Stop Bow-Hunting Deer in Westchester & Rockland County Parks

We at Friends of Animals need your help on behalf of the deer. Westchester County plans to turn 850 acres in Lasden Park and Muscoot Farm Park into deer-killing fields for bowhunters starting November 7th A "task force" with a pro-hunting bent concluded that there was an "overpopulation" of deer eating as deer eat in the forest. Its members made the unprecedented decision to open up parklands where hunting was formerly prohibited.

Hunting changes the way deer naturally evolve and can cause deer populations to increase. Nature itself ensures that the deer population is limited by available food, territory, and winter weather conditions, which restrict both food and range. The reproductive rate and the survival rate of deer will then decrease, creating a natural balance. Deer simply need us to let them be, and that's the message that needs to be communicated to your legislators.

Hunting is also known to increase the instances of accidents, with people driving into scattering deer. A 2002 study by Friends of Animals indicated that hunting exacerbates roadway deaths of deer. About half of all these accidents happen during the three months of hunting season: October, November and December.

We ask Westchester and Rockland County residents: Please contact the officials below and tell them that you demand an end to the plan to turn your peaceful parklands into places where arrows fly.

Cruel Bat Research at Texas A&M

Click here http://www.batworld.org/wall_of_shame/TXAMCruelResearch.html
to read our position statement. Please send an e-mail to sanctuary@batworld.org
if you would like to have your group added.

In the fall of 2008 we were alerted to a critical situation regarding cruel and unnecessary research being conducted by Dr. Christopher Quick at Texas A&M University. This research involves pallid bats, a small insectivorous bat about 3" in length. Four of these bats were injured during the research and can no longer fly well enough to be released. Thankfully -rather than being euthanized- these bats were retired to Bat World Sanctuary at the urging of one of the assistants involved in the research. An agreement was subsequently made for the retirement of the entire colony to Bat World when the research concluded. Unfortunately, we now have solid reason to believe that Dr. Quick has no intention of keeping his word, and feel the remaining bats will be used in this barbaric research until they die.

Please note that the eye witness account below contains graphic and heart wrenching testimony by individuals who were directly involved in this research, and who are now working to help free these bats from further suffering.

Beene' the first pallid bat to be
retired to Bat World Sanctuary from Texas A&M University.

Eye WITNESS ACCOUNT:

I am in need of your assistance with a critical matter involving a dwindling colony of pallid bats in a remote location in West Texas. These bats are continuing to be subjected to cruel experiments and housing once they are captured and placed into captivity. The following information outlines the years of cruelty that I personally witnessed.
CLICK HERE TO READ MY SWORN AFFIDAVIT

Dr. Christopher Quick, a biomedical engineer, heads this research currently taking place at Texas A&M University, where he has been allowed to perform experiments on pallid bats for several years. He captures bats from a roosting site which the bats have been safely using for over 20 years. As a result of the removal of so many bats, a steady decrease in the population has occurred. In the past few years he has been allowed to take over 50 pallid bats, the majority of them females. Consequently, over 40 female pallid bats were not allowed to give birth to one pup a year for over four years, resulting in the loss of 160 bats within a four year time span. Many of these pups would have also reproduced during this time.
Excluding a few bats that died as a direct result of stress, these experiments are not entirely terminal. As a result, the bats have been subjected to an unnatural environment long-term, and forced to work during the day when they should be asleep. They are exposed to up to 15 different types of drugs, alcohol and periodic painful medical procedures without sedation. They are used in experiments for up to six hours per day. Witnesses have seen the bats struggling for so long during experiments that they eventually began urinating blood due to the stress of the experiment.

One of the worst aspects of this research involves a rectal probe. The rectal probe causes bleeding and tearing of the rectum and causes such high levels of stress that the bats often self mutilate by chewing on its own arm or rectum in order to try and free itself. I witnessed bats urinating blood after this procedure, as well as rapid breathing and gnashing of teeth. The rectal probe is very rigid and made out of steel. While it is inserted using lidocaine, a short-term numbing agent, the bat is oftentimes in the box, laying in its back with the rectal probe inserted, for more than 30
A pallid undergoing an experiment under Dr. Quick's care. The bat is on its back, restrained in a Plexiglas box. The bat's wing is unnaturally stretched out and then held in place with weighted cotton swabs. The hot lens of the microscope is aimed at the delicate wing tissue for hours at a time, oftentimes causing burns.

minutes at a time. It is not uncommon for a bat to cry out during the entire procedure. The bat is placed into the box restrained, with the rectal probe inserted, then its body is heated to see how high the bats body temperature would rise. Recordings are taken to see how long it took the bat's body temperature to go back down to baseline temperature. With the exception of Dr. Quick, everyone, including the grad students, hates this experiment. When I was with Dr. Quick in the room, he would make the bat stay in the experiment box even after the experiment was over just to play around with the microscope. He would look at the bats wing under the microscope, and I would tell him that the rectal probe cord was not long enough for him to be moving the bat around. A few times he moved the bat so much that he caused tension on the probe, causing the bat to cry out in agony. It was not until I stepped in and said enough was enough that he would grudgingly stop.

CT- DEER HUNTING, Lies and Misinformation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Priscilla Feral
Phone: (203) 656-1522
feral@friendsofanimals.org

As Hunting Season Begins in Connecticut, So Do the Lies and Misinformation

Darien,CT--"Each year, apologists for hunting are pressed to justify their violent, unethical deer-killing schemes bolstered by state wildlife agencies which profit from hunting," says Friends of Animal's president, Priscilla Feral.

In a press release issued by the pro-hunting group Fairfield County Municipal Deer Management Alliance, traffic accidents, Lyme disease and environmental destruction are solely blamed on deer. The group even called for Fairfield County residents to sanction deer killings on their private property, to "do their part" to eradicate deer. As though deer must disappear to ensure public safety.

Hunting is on the decline, and has been for years; fewer than 1% of Connecticut's residents hunt.

It's no longer acceptable to call hunting recreation. Hunters invent social benefits to excuse their killings: "protecting" deer from "over-population" or people from disease, or feeding the hungry. They are "protecting" wildflowers from "over-browsing" and heading off collisions.

"What's missing," Feral says, "is respect for conscious life - - and for the truth."

Feral observes that humans-the only species on earth whose population is truly out of control-often fail to acknowledge how our reckless overdevelopment and penchant to overpopulate directly impacts our perceived problems with deer and other free-living animals.

Hunting changes the way deer naturally evolve and can cause deer populations to increase. Nature itself ensures that the deer population is limited by available food, territory, and winter weather conditions, which restrict both food and range. Numerous studies over the years have shown that both the reproductive rate and the survival rate of deer will then decrease-creating a natural balance.

Neither do deer cause Lyme disease; black-legged ticks carry the disease when immature, on smaller host animals than deer. Vigilant checks for ticks on the body and immediate removal, especially in the summer and early autumn weeks, are key for controlling the spread of Lyme disease.

It's true: there are about a 1.5 million reported instances of drivers hitting deer in the United States every year. "So, clearly there is a problem, yet the quickest way to reduce deer/auto collisions is to get the hunters out of the woods," Feral says. A 2002 study by Friends of Animals found that hunting actually exacerbates roadway deaths of deer because it can frighten deer into darting out to roadways. About half of all these collisions occur in just three months: October, November, and December -- hunting season.

Howard Kilpatrick, a biologist with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in Connecticut, celebrates the fact that more land has been opened up to hunting-telling the Stamford Advocate "that's what we need to manage deer populations." But what Kilpatrick doesn't mention is his own professional bias: The DEP is a pro-hunting agency that is funded, in part, by the sale of hunting licenses and a federal excise tax on guns and ammunition. This fact alone ensures only one thing: corrupt, one-sided "science."

Nature is being managed to death; it's time for communities to call for ceasefires. Deer simply need us to let them be.
