BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - One of the Buffalo Zoo's three Asian elephants has
died.

The 52-year-old "Buki" had been losing weight recently as her appetite
declined and medical tests revealed a change in kidney function.

Her keepers spent each morning reading to her from hundreds of get-well
wishes from the community. She died just after 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Results of a necropsy are not expected for several weeks.

A study published in Zoo Biology magazine in 2004 found the average life
expectancy for female Asian elephants in captivity is 44.8 years, about the
same as elephants in the wild.

Buki was born wild in Thailand and was in circuses from about 1959 until
1984, when she was retired and sent to Buffalo.

CT- DEER HUNTING, Lies and Misinformation

As Hunting Season Begins in Connecticut, So Do the Lies and Misinformation

Darien,CT--"Each year, apologists for hunting are pressed to justify their violent, unethical deer-killing schemes bolstered by state wildlife agencies which profit from hunting," says Friends of Animal's president, Priscilla Feral.

In a press release issued by the pro-hunting group Fairfield County Municipal Deer Management Alliance, traffic accidents, Lyme disease and environmental destruction are solely blamed on deer. The group even called for Fairfield County residents to sanction deer killings on their private property, to "do their part" to eradicate deer. As though deer must disappear to ensure public safety.

Hunting is on the decline, and has been for years; fewer than 1% of Connecticut's residents hunt.

It's no longer acceptable to call hunting recreation. Hunters invent social benefits to excuse their killings: "protecting" deer from "over-population" or people from disease, or feeding the hungry. They are "protecting" wildflowers from "over-browsing" and heading off collisions.

"What's missing," Feral says, "is respect for conscious life - - and for the truth."

Feral observes that humans-the only species on earth whose population is truly out of control-often fail to acknowledge how our reckless overdevelopment and penchant to overpopulate directly impacts our perceived problems with deer and other free-living animals.

Hunting changes the way deer naturally evolve and can cause deer populations to increase. Nature itself ensures that the deer population is limited by available food, territory, and winter weather conditions, which restrict both food and range. Numerous studies over the years have shown that both the reproductive rate and the survival rate of deer will then decrease-creating a natural balance.

Neither do deer cause Lyme disease; black-legged ticks carry the disease when immature, on smaller host animals than deer. Vigilant checks for ticks on the body and immediate removal, especially in the summer and early autumn weeks, are key for controlling the spread of Lyme disease.

It's true: there are about a 1.5 million reported instances of drivers hitting deer in the United States every year. "So, clearly there is a problem, yet the quickest way to reduce deer/auto collisions is to get the hunters out of the woods," Feral says. A 2002 study by Friends of Animals found that hunting actually exacerbates roadway deaths of deer because it can frighten deer into darting out to roadways. About half of all these collisions occur in just three months: October, November, and December -- hunting season.

Howard Kilpatrick, a biologist with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in Connecticut, celebrates the fact that more land has been opened up to hunting-telling the Stamford Advocate "that's what we need to manage deer populations." But what Kilpatrick doesn't mention is his own professional bias: The DEP is a pro-hunting agency that is funded, in part, by the sale of hunting licenses and a federal excise tax on guns and ammunition. This fact alone ensures only one thing: corrupt, one-sided "science."

Nature is being managed to death; it's time for communities to call for ceasefires. Deer simply need us to let them be.

About Friends of Animals: We are a non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, founded in 1957. Our goal is to cultivate a respectful view of non-human animals, freeing them from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world.

City asked to ban carriage horses

The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida on Monday asked the St.
Augustine City Commission to "join other progressive cities across the
globe and ban horse-drawn carriages on city streets."

Carla Wilson, Central Florida coordinator for the foundation, told the
commission she wanted to "open a dialogue" with them to seek "a
solution to the problem."

"People (these days) are less aware of what is going on around them,"
Wilson said. "This is unfortunate for horse-drawn carriages. Although
they were a traditional means of transport 100 years ago, now we use
cars, which are a way of life in St. Augustine."

Animal Rights Protesters Face Higher Sentences than Racist Cross Burners

Sep 30th, 2009 by Will Potter

Four animal rights activists are facing charges under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act for chanting, demonstrating with masks covering their faces, and chalking defamatory slogans on the sidewalk. If convicted, the “AETA 4,”—Joseph Buddenburg, Maryam Khajavi, Nathan Pope, and Adriana Stumpo—could be sentenced to 5-10 years in prison.

The AETA 4 case is a startling example of how federal terrorism laws are being used to create new crimes targeting political activists, and astronomically increase sentences for existing crimes. For instance, Marie Mason was sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for setting fire to empty buildings and taking precautions to not harm anyone.

Meanwhile, during a Congressional hearing on the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, the Justice Department proclaimed “we are apolitical in this.” But this is anything but apolitical. Animal rights activists could receive 5-10 years in prison, as terrorists, for not harming anyone or attempting to harm anyone. Meanwhile, take a look at what some others are facing for much more serious crimes:

Burning at a cross at the home of an African-American man, close to his home, while his family is inside: 3.5 years.
Threatening president-elect Obama with statements including, “I’m going to assassinate the new president of the United States of America. PS you have 48 hours to stop it from happening”: four years probation.
Setting fire to a hotel with people inside: 1 year.
Police officer rapes a girl in juvenile custody: 8 months.
Assaulting black men on election night because Obama was elected president: about 5 years.
Enron exec guilty of $7 million in wire fraud and securities fraud: 16 months.
Possessing child pornography: 4 years.
Tying up a black student and taunting him with racial epithets as part of a high school graduation party: six months.
Mailing anthrax threats to the IRS: one year.
“Using the Internet to threaten to destroy buildings of the Federal Bureau of Investigation by fire or explosives”: one year.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth kills a construction worker while driving drunk: 30 days.
Threatening to bomb an Air Force base: one year.
Drunken man drives over his brother during an argument: 1.5 years.
Scheming to defraud an insurance company through arson: 2 years.
Mailing anthrax threats to an assistant U.S. attorney: up to 5 years.
Manufacturing and selling home-made explosive devices: 5 years probation
Sending 65 anthrax hoax letters: four years.
Dumping nearly 13 million gallons of untreated liquid waste: 15 months.
Threatening to bomb the Oklahoma city federal building: up to 5 years.
Setting a dog on fire and burning 50 percent of his body: 45 days.
According to the government, high sentences for animal rights activists are intended as a deterrent, they are intended to send a message.

What kind of message do you think this sends?

Take e-action against real fur sporrans!

Please forward widely...

Real-fur sporrans – for Scotland’s sake make it fake!

Support the week of action against real-fur sporrans! 28th Sept-4th Oct. Take Action now!

In Scotland one of the most common uses of real fur is the production of sporrans. Recently the EU introduced a ban on trading in seal products but annually 45 million animals, including fox, badger, beaver and rabbit, continue to be brutally killed for their skins.

But fur is not just inhumane, it raises serious environmental concerns. A ranch- raised coat requires 20 times more energy than manufacturing a synthetic one. Fur farms produce massive amounts of animal waste, a major contributor to global warming.

Edinburgh the Fur-Free City has called a Week of Action across Scotland from 28th September - 4th October for everyone to speak out against real-fur sporrans. Communities in different parts of Scotland – including Borders, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and West Lothian – are gearing up to participate in the Week of Action, and thousands of people have signed the petition banning the importation of fur into UK markets.

E-action from 28th September!!!

Please take part in the e-protest and support the local actions taking place across Scotland. List of all shops/manufacturers to be emailed, faxed, phoned etc is here

I am absolutely appalled to learn that you still sell real-fur sporrans.

More than 50 million animals are killed each year just for their fur - either bred and raised in small barren cages on factory fur farms or caught in the wild by brutal steel-jawed leg-hold traps.

I am asking you to help save dogs, cats, foxes, rabbits, and other fur-bearing animals from unnecessary suffering in the name of "fashion" by choosing not to sell any real-fur sporrans or accessories.

Opinion polls conducted over the last 10 years have consistently shown that more than 70% of people in the UK reject fur and only 4% own anything made from fur. By adopting a no-fur policy, and making available faux-fur sporrans, your company can be one of the first in Scotland to end this unnecessary and cruel fashion choice and allow consumers to shop with confidence.

Please take an ethical stance and stand against fur fashion - by adpoting faux-fur sporrans. By adopting a no-fur policy, your company can be one of the first in Scotland to end this unnecessary and cruel fashion choice and allow consumers to shop with confidence.

Mommy Calico and her Two Babies Need Foster Home ASAP!

A very young ( maybe 10 months old) mommy calico
gave birth to two babies in a high traffic area
under evergreen bushes.

They are in need of a foster home.

The kittens are approximately 4 weeks old
and are still nursing.

S.P.A. scooped them up and we are paying to board them
at a local vet's office. Our shelter is full and we are hoping
that someone out there can make room for these three
absolutely BEAUTIFUL girls.

The mothers ear is folded over and thick
from an obvious old wound with scar tissue.

She will probably require ear surgery
to straighten out her ear.

If anyone can help this mommy cat
and her two babies, please let me know ASAP

PA kennels shed breeding stock before new law takes effect!

PLEASE CROSSPOST!

Nearly 400 breeding dogs from Pennsylvania' s largest commercial kennels are scheduled be shipped west to be auctioned in Ohio next week, in a move that animal welfare activists say is likely the result of tougher standards under the new state dog law.

The dogs, most of them Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles and Shih Tsus, from 12 licensed kennels are expected to be sold at the Buckeye Dog Auction on Oct. 7 in Farmerstown, according to Mary O'Connor-Shaver of Columbus Top Dogs. http://www.columbustopdogs.com/

PA kennels shed breeding stock before new law takes effect

Is a mass downsizing underway in Pennsylvania kennels?

Nearly 400 breeding dogs from Pennsylvania' s largest commercial kennels are scheduled be shipped west to be auctioned in Ohio next week, in a move that animal welfare activists say is likely the result of tougher standards under the new state dog law.

Key provisions of new law (Act 119) take effect on the first anniversary of the signing of the legislation on Oct. 9, among them: larger cage sizes, restrictions on cage stacking, access to outdoor exercise and regular veterinary exams for breeding dogs.

The dogs, most of them Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles and Shih Tsus, from 12 licensed kennels are expected to be sold at the Buckeye Dog Auction on Oct. 7 in Farmerstown, according to Mary O'Connor-Shaver of Columbus Top Dogs. http://www.columbus topdogs.com/

Among the Lancaster County kennels which have listed dogs with the auction are: Glenwood Kennel in Ephrata, Gold Kennels and School Lane Kennel in Gap, R.E.Z Kennels and Conestoga Kennel in New Holland, James S. Zimmerman Kennel in Ephrata, Myer Kennels Inc. in Lititz, John S. Fisher Kennel and S & R Kennel in Gordonville, Nolt Kennel in East Earl.

Also listed selling dogs is Scarlet-Maple Kennel in Ronks. Its owner, Daniel Esh, had his kennel license revoked by the state after repeated unsatisfactory inspections.

A number of the other kennel operators selling dogs at auction have been been convicted of violations of the state dog law which would make them ineligible for a waiver to extend construction time for the improved kennels. An attorney who represented commercial kennel operators in their unsuccessful federal lawsuit to stop the law from being implemented, predicted it could take hundreds of thousands of dollars to meet the new standards. But activists point out that breeders are part of a multi-million industry and should be able to handle the costs of compliance.

Banned in Pennsylvania, dog auctions have taken off in Ohio's dog breeding capital, Holmes County, which is also home to one of the largest Amish populations in the country. Shaver and others - http://banohiodogau ctions.com/ Home.html who have witnessed the mistreatment of dogs at auctions where some sickly animals sell for as little as $1 - are waging a ballot referendum initiative and advocating for legislative action :

No cruelty charges for shelter

By Suzanne Roig
Advertiser Staff Writer
The Honolulu prosecutor's office has decided not to pursue a case against the surviving owner of a Leeward Coast animal shelter where more than 400 dogs, cats and birds were housed.
Norman Pang of Nanakuli had not been cited, arrested or charged for alleged cruelty to animals, but the Hawaiian Humane Society sought prosecution.
Pang, whose wife operated Animal Haven on the couple's property, died in July.
Pamela Burns, Hawaiian Humane Society chief executive officer, said she respected the prosecutor's office decision not to pursue the case against Animal Haven. The Humane Society forwarded all of its information to the prosecutor's office for determination, Burns said.
"Although we received numerous complaints, we were prohibited access to the property to conduct an animal cruelty investigation," Burns said in a prepared statement. "As a result our case was severely compromised. We stand by our decision to forward this case to the prosecutor's office for their determination about the strength and quality of the evidence to pursue a conviction."
In July, animal welfare agencies took control of the animals at the no-kill shelter that had been run by Pang's wife, Bonnie.
After her death, Norman Pang signed a surrender statement giving the O'ahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ownership of the animals in the sanctuary. The O'ahu SPCA requested help from the Humane Society of the United States. It took five days for welfare agencies to orchestrate what's been described as O'ahu's largest animal rescue operation.
Jim Fulton, spokesman for the prosecutor's office, said it came down to a question of whether prosecutors could prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
"Our standard is proving a case beyond a reasonable doubt," Fulton said. "We didn't treat this case any differently than any other case. It was a complete investigation."
The Pangs had a running dispute with the Hawaiian Humane Society that spanned more than two decades. In 1995, the Humane Society took Bonnie Pang to court on charges of cruelty to animals, although a judge dismissed the case.
Earlier this month, Norman Pang filed a lawsuit against several local and national animal welfare organizations, including the Hawaiian Humane Society. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, claims the organizations and their representatives have defamed him and that he has been deprived of his rights. He also is suing to force the animal organizations to remove all photographs and video of Animal Haven from their Internet sites.
Photographs and video taken when the animals were removed in July have shown up on the Web site of the Humane Society of the United States, describing the shelter as a "hoarding situation."
Pang feels vindicated by the prosecutor's decision not to pursue criminal charges, said his attorney, Michael Ostendorp.
"He feels the Hawaiian Humane Society is out of control," Ostendorp said. "He said the Humane Society was trying to prosecute on fabricated claims."

MBF Therapeutics & Lankenau Institute for Medical Research Partner To Develop Novel Drug Treatment for Companion Animal Cancers

Pilot Clinical Study Underway at University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine
AMBLER, Pa., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- MBF Therapeutics Inc. (MBFT) http://www.mbftherapeutics.com/, a development stage veterinary oncology company here, and suburban Philadelphia-based Lankenau Institute for Medical Research (LIMR) http://www.limr.org/ , announced today that they have formed a strategic relationship to support the development of MBFT-101, a treatment for common and aggressive cancers in dogs and cats.
The agreement covering the arrangement provides MBFT with exclusive access to preclinical data from research being conducted by Dr. Thomas O'Brien, professor at both LIMR and Thomas Jefferson University's Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology. Dr. O'Brien, a member of MBFT's Clinical Advisory Board, is widely recognized for his extensive study of the role of polyamine transport inhibitors and their ability to significantly enhance the activity of difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an early "designer" drug.
A pilot clinical study using MBFT-101 in cats with oral squamous cell carcinoma -- the most common feline oral cancer -- is currently in progress at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania's Veterinary Clinical Investigation Center (http://www.vet.upenn.edu/ ), with the help of a grant from Ben Franklin Partners Technology Concept Network to MBFT and Dr. O'Brien. Later this year, MBFT will initiate a pilot clinical study using dogs.
MBFT-101 is a novel combination of two drug molecules that act in concert to kill cancer cells by starving them of nutrients essential for cell growth and survival, with no effect on normal cells. The therapy is intended to be administered orally, at home, for four to six weeks.
"This partnership embodies the true value of translational medicine. Together we are able to evaluate MBFT-101 in cats and dogs with natural disease, concurrently with crucial preclinical studies in laboratory animal models," said Thomas Tillett, MBFT President and CEO. "At the same time we are developing these treatments for companion animals, we will advance our understanding of how to effectively treat human cancers," he added, noting that dogs, in particular, are the best animal models for emerging treatments of certain types of human cancers.
"Cancer is a devastating disease that affects both humans and animals alike," stated Dr. George Prendergast, LIMR President & CEO. "The Lankenau Institute is very excited about our new, unique relationship with MBF Therapeutics. MBFT will utilize research performed in our laboratories to advance the development of needed, new therapies for our beloved pets while also setting the stage for future studies in humans."
About MBF Therapeutics: Ambler, PA-based MBF Therapeutics is capitalizing on the lack of effective cancer therapies in the companion animal health arena to develop novel, proprietary veterinary oncology products. Our strategy focuses on the acquisition and clinical development
of products that will not only be disruptive to existing markets, but will also create new markets for clinical therapy. Our portfolio includes targeted gene-based and small molecule products with well-understood mechanisms of action that specifically disrupt tumor cell metabolism and/or modulate immune function. Marines Enlist Help of ASPCA Animal Behavior Experts

Team of Experts to Assess Behavior of Dogs in Danger of Breed Ban

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Several Animal Behavior Experts from the ASPCA(R)( )(The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(R)) will be in Parris Island, S.C. from October 6-8 to conduct behavior assessments of over 100 dogs living with their pet parents who could potentially be subject to a breed ban in the Tri-Command housing units of the Marines Corp Recruit Depot.

The assessment, known as ASPCA SAFER (Safety Assessment For Evaluation Rehoming), is a seven-item research-based assessment to help identify the likelihood for aggression in individual dogs. SAFER identifies a dog's comfort level with certain interactions like restraint, touch, reaction to new experiences including movement, sound stimuli, bite inhibition, behavior around food and toys, and arousal level toward novel objects and other dogs.

"Our main goal in this program is to make sure safe dogs and their families are able to stay together," said Dr. Emily Weiss, Senior Director of Shelter Research and Development for the ASPCA. "There is no 'pass' or 'fail' with the SAFER assessment, instead, we are simply aiming to identify behavior issues such as certain types of aggression, which often times can be modified or managed."

Talk of instituting a breed ban began after several incidents involving dog attacks on the base, including one incident in 2008 in which a 3 year-old boy was accidentally killed by a pit bull visiting a family living on base. The Marine Corps previously conducted tests such as the Canine Good Citizen Test and Delta Society Test, which actually evaluate a dog's obedience and manners and do not correlate with aggression. When looking for a behavior assessment that could specifically identify potentially aggressive behavior in dogs, the Marines enlisted the help of the ASPCA.

By using the SAFER assessment, safe dogs will be given the opportunity for a waiver so they can remain on the base until 2012. The ASPCA is opposed to breed bans -- laws that ban specific breeds of dogs or unfairly discriminate against responsible dog guardians based solely on their choice of breed. Such laws also fail to achieve the desired goal of stopping illegal activities such as dog fighting, and breeding and/or training dogs to be aggressive. The ASPCA believes that strict enforcement of laws that ban animal fighting, and breeding and/or training animals to fight, is the proper means to address the problem.

"We're very excited about the ASPCA coming to Parris Island," said Army Capt. Jenifer Gustafson, the Officer in Charge of the veterinary clinic on Parris Island. "There was a chance that some pet parents would be forced to give up their dogs or leave housing on the base, so this is a great alternative solution."

About the ASPCA(R)

Founded in 1866, the ASPCA(R) (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(R)) is the first humane organization established in the Americas and serves as the nation's leading voice for animal welfare. One million supporters strong, the ASPCA's mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. As a 501 [c] [3] not-for-profit corporation, the ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services. The ASPCA, which is headquartered in New York City, offers a wide range of programs, including a mobile clinic outreach initiative, its own humane law enforcement team, and a groundbreaking veterinary forensics team and mobile animal CSI unit. China Drafts Nation's First Animal Protection Law

BEIJING, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Fund
for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org) applauds China for drafting
the country's first animal welfare legislation, which would make
animal abuse and cruelty a punishable offence. A draft of the Animal
Protection Law which outlines the basic standards for treating all
animals in different situations is published online for public
comment, from a legal conference in Beijing, China.

Recently, several Chinese cities have forged ahead with dog culls
citing concerns of rabies, leaving tens of thousands of dogs brutally
killed. Such slaughter would be stemmed should this law be passed.

In addition to releasing the draft animal protection law, changes
regarding China's Criminal Law were also suggested, making animal
abuse a punishable offence.

Millions of animals suffer horribly every year from cruelty in zoos
and parks, on farms, markets and the streets, in laboratories and
during the process of transport and slaughter. Often ignorant about
how animals can feel pain, people treat animals only as a "resource"
and do the cruelest things to them. Foxes are skinned alive for their
fur. Bears have open wounds in their bodies to extract their bile.
Tigers, with their teeth and claws pulled out, are chained to the
ground for picture-taking with tourists. Cats are boiled alive before
they are eaten. Dogs are clubbed and stoned to death in the name of
"rabies prevention and population control."

Stamford's Bartlett Arboretum to hold deer hunt

STAMFORD -- Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens will hold a controlled hunt
this fall to reduce the deer population after years of seeing its
understory destroyed by a growing numbers of bucks and does.

The hunt comes eight months after complaints over security and prior
notification from animal rights activists led the city to end a deer
hunt on city property a day early.

Bow-hunters will visit the park at dawn at various days after Tuesday
and hunt deer from tree platforms and remove carcasses before anyone
visits the nature preserve in the morning. The exact start date of the
hunt is a secret, arboretum officials said. Arboretum officials sent
letters to North Stamford residents who live near the gardens and
trails in the past few weeks to notify them of the hunt and said deer
have eaten away at least seven species of wildflower and led to the
loss of five to seven species of shrub-nesting birds. They said
unchecked deer populations have disrupted the ecosystem in the
arboretum's 91 acres of open space in North Stamford and threaten
growth of new trees because the deer eat oak, maple and hickory

HOT TOPIC: Should animal cruelty laws be stricter?

ARIZONA, September 28 -- On Wednesday, 191 bills passed by the
Legislature this year are scheduled to become law. Senate Bill 1115
is one of them. The measure, written by Sen. Jonathan Paton of
Tucson expands the current law banning dog fighting to include any
fight in which animals are intended to injure each other.

This bill also bans "horse tripping". The legislature considered a
similar measure last year, but failed to pass it.

Horse tripping is typically done during Mexican rodeos called
charreadas, and involves two cowboys on horseback chasing a horse and
causing the animal to flee. When the horse has reached full speed, a
third horseman lassoes one of the horse's front legs, then stops and
pulls back on the rope, causing the horse to trip forward and smash
full-force into the ground.

Grève de la faim pour sauver les groins-Petition to sign!

URL Courte : http://4917.lapetition.be/
We need help from animal lovers from all over the world : we would be honored if you sign the petition online to help a small animal shelter - a lady has rented a property so she could save pigs and wild animals from the hunters, here shelter is calle La Foret de Léa (Lea's forest). Valérie has started a hunger strike, as the Prefet has ordered her expellation from the house.

If Foret de Lea is expelled, this would mean that they will free the wild animals so the local hunters can shoot them or they would be put to sleep by the state vet.

If animal lovers from all over the world sign this petition, it will show the world what is happening in this country.

We cant do much against the system..
Everyone needs only to enter their names, country and comments if they would like as well as your website if you are an animal welfare group to show the whole world that you care.

I have resumed on my blog : Blog Anouk - La Foret de Lea + linked directly to the petition site.

Thank you in advance for anything you could do to pass on the world.
God bless

FRANCAIS

Chers amis,

Help Wenka & Elder Chimpanzees

HOW TO HELP
Sign the Project R&R petition* to the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D. The NIH is the top government institution who oversees the four federally funded facilities that hold the oldest known chimpanzees in research. Please ask Dr. Collins to immediately release Wenka and the other eldest chimpanzees into permanent sanctuary so that they may enjoy their remaining years, months, or even days in the relative peace and freedom of sanctuary before they die.

*In addition, Project R&R will be sending a letter to the President/Director of Emory University and Yerkes on behalf of all supporters, asking for Wenka's immediate release.

Tell me more
Full Petition Text:
Dear Dr. Collins:

We urgently request that you, as Director of the National Institutes of Health, exercise your power to secure the transfer of the eldest chimpanzees known to be in research laboratories into sanctuary. The most recent information we are able to obtain indicates that these chimpanzees (listed below) were born in the 1950's and early 1960's.

Many of these individuals have been used in research protocols or for breeding purposes for more than 40 years - many for their entire lives. They deserve release into the comfort and protections that sanctuary provides before they die. They have little time left.

Project R&R partners with several highly reputable sanctuaries who have indicated their ability to accept these individuals immediately.

The Chimpanzee Elders (and labs where held)

- Wenka, age 55 (Yerkes)
- Cheeta, age 52 (Yerkes)
- Lulu, age 52 (Yerkes)
- Maxine, age 52 (Yerkes)
- Flo, age 52 (Alamogordo)
- Karen, age 51 (New Iberia)
- Guy, age 50 (Alamogordo)
- Diana, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Jan, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Julius, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Lady Bird, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Pumpkin, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Sandy, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Walter B., age 49 (New Iberia)
- Clay, age 49 (New Iberia)
- Martha, age 49 (Yerkes)
- Mary, age 49 (Yerkes)
- Winny, age 48 (Alamogordo)
- Kirby, age 48 (Alamogordo)
- Maxwell, age 48 (Alamogordo)
- Pierre, age 47 (M.D. Anderson)
- Gigi, age 47 (M.D. Anderson)
- Happy, age 47 (Primate Foundation of AZ)
- Josam, age 47 (Alamogordo)
- Iyk, age 47 (Yerkes)
- Beleka, age 47 (Yerkes)
- Janice, age 47 (New Iberia)

Given the importance of chimpanzee social bonding, we also request that each individual be sent along with at least one or more chimpanzee cage mate or friend. Chimpanzees form powerful bonds. It is essential that these relationships be respected and appreciated as critical to the individuals' well being. Disrupting family bonds and friendships is a hardship many have endured for years. The elders must not have to pay for their release with the loss of one more relative or friend.

An independent public opinion survey commissioned by Project R&R found that 71% of Americans support the release of chimpanzees who have spent longer than 10 years in a laboratory. These chimpanzee individuals have far surpassed that mark.

Sincerely,

Monday, September 28, 2009

Speak up for animals in California!

Encourage Governor Schwarzenegger to sign all of these important pro-animal bills into law. Please take a moment today to contact the Governor's office in support of these bills.
* AB 243 (sponsored by Assemblymember Nava) will provide for broader forfeiture options for seized animals and for mandatory post-conviction possession bans for those convicted of cruelty, neglect or abandonment - meaning they could not own, maintain, have custody of, reside with, or care for any animal.

The provisions contained in AB 243 are vital tools in protecting animal victims from their abusers and in helping to reduce the possibility of new victims.
* AB 241 (also sponsored by Assemblymember Nava) limits to 50 the number of adult dogs or cats that an individual or business which buys or sells wholesale or to the public may possess or control.
* AB 242 (also sponsored by Assemblymember Nava) increases the penalty for being a spectator at a dogfight.
* AB 1122 (sponsored by Assemblymember Lieu) makes it illegal to sell, display, or offer for sale or give away, a live animal on any street, highway, public right-of-way, parking lot, carnival, or boardwalk.
* SB 135 (sponsored by Senator Florez) prohibits the tail-docking of cattle.
* SB 318 (sponsored by Senator Calderon) provides for the forfeiture of certain property acquired through dogfighting.
It will only take a moment to voice your support for these important bills. Call 916-445-2841 and follow the prompts given or send Governor Schwarzenegger an email here.

Les animaux au Maroc-Animals in Morocco.Petition to sign!French Language!

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x11kxs_pitbull-maroc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8qUfdBb4ck

International Anti-Fur Coalition urge Mr Ritz to ban cat and dog furtrade in Canada

Please scroll down to letter and the link to Gerry Ritz Minister of Agriculture in Canada, and please copy/paste Jane Halevy's letter to him from International Anti-Fur Coalition about failing to impose a ban on cat and dog fur from China and Asian countries where animals are routinly skinned alive for cheap fur trims and toys for PETS.
This leaves once again, Canada isolated from the U.S., Europe and Australia in this unspeakably cruel decision.
We need international attention on this issue and not to give up pressuring politicians in Canada who's mindset is still in the Fur Trade era!
Please forward it to everybody you know and post it to Facebook, Myspace, bulletins etc whatever can get publicity - I will also send to papers during the weekend like Province, Vancouver Sun, Epoch Times etc...

Thanks for your time, please help for innocent furbearer friends!!

DAY OF ATONEMENT

Michael Vick tortured and killed dogs and went to
jail for his actions. Eric Ledbetter tortured and
blinded and killed dogs and was praised by his
Cornell University colleagues.

Today (Monday, September 28, 2009) is Yom Kippur,
a day of fasting in which Jews throughout the world
meditate and reflect upon past transgressions. For
a Jew, today's thoughts are reserved for personal
reflection and introspection.

On this day, I dedicate my column to Dr. Eric
Ledbetter of Cornell University. He and his team
of researchers injected herpes virus into the
eyes of (he calls them "naive") dogs, just to
see what would happen. The dogs went blind and
suffered severe pain in the process. Duh.
A link to his June, 2009 study:

http://tinyurl.com/ybqnapx

Should you wish to contact Dr. Heshouldknowbetter
Ledbetter:

ecl32@cornell.edu

My day of atonement fantasy for Eric would be to
inject herpes virus into his eyes. I know the
results of my study before the conclusion:

In the future, he would see no evil.

Think of what science taught us from his study.
Poke dogs in the eyes with hypodermic syringes
filled with herpes virus and they will need
seeing eye persons.

Who else should spend today atoning for past sins?
A group of Chinese scientists who inoculated tiger
pups with the AIDS virus, just to see what would
happen. A link to their May, 2009 publication:

http://tinyurl.com/ybpnvzj

These so-called people of science must sense that
their work is more than just deceptive and self-serving.
It is merciless. It is shameful. I've never before
heard of tigers with AIDS, but shall forever in the
future avoid tiger bites when I am on safari.

Can Japanese scientists atone for the worst
example of animal research?

I can never forgive the scientists who published the
most horrible of studies in the December 2002 issue of
New Scientist. Can they forgive themselves?

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993135

These Japanese researchers decapitated the heads
of 12-day-old rats, and implanted them onto the
thighs of adult rodents.

Think of the possibilities for humans! If we perform
this same technique on Americans, in the event of a
nuclear terrorist attack, we'll be able to kiss our
own asses goodbye.

One scientist, Nobufumi Kawai, at the Jichi Medical
School in Tochigi, claims that the grafted heads
could become "excellent models" for investigating
brain function in human infants.

Today I may atone for my own selfish fantasy
which involves Dr. Kawai's upper thigh and the
transplanted head of one of Michael Vick's
abused pit bulls...

Then again, I may not. Perhaps I'll just fantasize
about developing an AIDS vaccine for a group of
Chinese Nazi doctors.

On this sacred day of atonement, there is neither
penance nor expiation for the things men do to
animals.

United Poultry Concerns Activists Will Protest Cruelty to Chickens
Kapparot Chicken Swinging Ritual at Chabad Shul of Potomac, MD

Machipongo, Va. September 24, 2009 - United Poultry Concerns will stage a protest demonstration at the Chabad Shul of Potomac in the front parking lot at 11621 Seven Locks and Gainsborough Road in Potomac, Maryland. This is where a kapparot chicken swinging ritual is scheduled for Thursday, September 24 from 7PM to 8:30PM.

Kapparot (atonement) is a ritual preceding Yom Kippur in which many Orthodox Jews swing chickens around their heads while reciting a chant about transferring the punishment God would otherwise confer on them onto the birds. The chickens are then slaughtered, on or off the premises, or simply abandoned or thrown into garbage bags.

Kapparot chicken swinging defenders claim the ritual is compassionate. This claim is completely refuted by eyewitness accounts, photographs and videotapes documenting the suffering, crying birds and the callous treatment they receive at the hands of the practitioners (www.upc-online.org/kaparos) .

Kapparot practitioners typically hold the birds with their wings pulled backward. This is a painful experience and potentially injurious to the ligaments and tendons of these birds, who have already sat miserably cramped in transport crates, often for days without food or water, before being swung. The abuse of these birds is fully consistent with the fact that kapparot practitioners regard them as mere symbolic receptacles for their personal punishment.

The use of chickens in kapparot rituals is not required by the Torah or the Talmud. Most observers swing coins for charity. In recent years, a groundswell of opposition to the kapparot chicken swinging and slaughter has been growing in New York City, Los Angeles, and Jerusalem. People are sick of the animal cruelty and want it stopped.

United Poultry Concerns recently learned that a kapparot ritual was scheduled to be held at the Chabad Shul of Potomac, and we will be there to oppose it Thursday evening.

For more information, please contact Karen Davis at 757-678-7875 or Gary Loewenthal at 703-532-0731.

Please take the time to write to religious leaders asking them to help lead the way to greater compassion and a more civilized and non-violent view of our treatment of animals.

It is long past time to address the archaic religious views of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, that support self-serving, absurd traditions and a biblical interpretation of "dominion" over animals that really means "domination" ; even this educated "ethical vegetarian", persists in justifying present day treatment of animals because he apparently believes we can "use if we don't abuse"! There is a basic flaw in that argument, because it is certainly "abuse of privilege" to take an innocent life, no matter how you do it!!!!:

In the words of Jewish vegetarian Professor Richard Schwartz:

"In the Torah, humanity is given dominion over animals (Gen. 1:26), which gives us the right to use animals for legitimate needs. Animal flesh can be consumed for food; animal skins can be used for clothing. The Torah itself must be written on parchment (animal hides), as must mezuzah scrolls, and tefillin must be made out of leather.
However, dominion does not give us the right to cause indiscriminate pain and destruction. We are permitted to use animals in this way only when there is a genuine, legitimate need, and we must do so in the manner that causes the animal the least suffering. Kosher slaughtering is designed to be as fast and painless as possible, and if anything occurs that might cause pain (such as a nick in the slaughtering knife or a delay in the cutting), the flesh may not be consumed. Hunting for sport is strictly prohibited, and hunting and trapping for legitimate needs is permissible only when it is done in the least painful way possible. "

Dear animal activists and rescuers;

The following message was sent to Rabbi Saperstein to address the issue of compassion for animals within the Jewish tradition.

Please feel free to write to him with your questions and concerns: rac@urj.org

Dear Rabbi Saperstein,

I have chosen to write to you at this time as it is the high holy day season, culminating in Yom Kippur, a time of atonement, forgiveness and reflection. You have chosen the hebrew word for life as a symbol in your banner and rightfully so, as life is sacred and precious to all. While the Jewish tradition places a great deal of value on human life, it falls short in addressing a meaningful definition of compassion for animals.

You were recently listed in Newsweek as one of the most influential Rabbis in the USA and in the spirit of this sacred season, I am hoping that you will respond to my concerns about the view and treatment of animals in the Jewish tradition.

It is my understanding that Judaism states unequivocally that human life is more valuable than animal life and therefore allows for the harming and even slaughter of animals to meet a human need. As this view has led to unspeakable suffering for boundless numbers of animals it is of concern to those of us who work to alleviate their suffering, as we believe that in their ability to suffer and feel pain animals are equal to humans and a meaningful definition of compassion would not condone any harm.

I would also ask that you consider that there are religious traditions which state unequivocally that ALL life is sacred. This belief system has resulted in greater benefits for animals and less suffering and violence for humanity. The most notable example is Mahatma Gandhi who used the Jain principle of ahimsa, non-violence for ALL beings, to free India from servitude.

The following memo is being distributed to clergy of the monotheistic religions, in the hope that the issue of compassion for animals can be addressed in a way that is beneficial to all. As Yom Kippur approaches please consider the spiritual implications of taking a life, any life:

IN THE NAME OF GOD

Dear Religious leaders of the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic Traditions:

I am writing to you with the hope that you will reconsider the morality of religious views that sanctions the harming/killing of animals to benefit man, as such a view is inhumane. While the taking of human life is a sin in these traditions, the harming or killing of an animal is not.

The Judeo/Christian/ Islamic traditions value an animals life in relation to human need and grant permission, that is to say, sanctify the harming/killing of animals in the name of NECESSITY. This is a self-serving, semantic premise based on archaic perceptions, designed to violate animal lives, while alleging compassion. Such reasoning has been used to exploit, dominate and abuse animals for many millennia.

Fortunately for animals this is not the only religious model for teaching compassion towards animals. The following words are from the scriptures of the Jain religion of India.

"For there is nothing inaccessible for death.
All beings are fond of life, hate pain, like pleasure,
shun destruction, like life, long to live. To all life
is dear." Jain Acharanga Sutra.

These words reflect the belief that the lives of all beings are sacred and that an animal's life has intrinsic worth, measured by its value to the animal. It is called ahimsa (no-harm) and is the fundamental principle of the Jain religion of India. In this tradition harm to any living being is to be avoided, minimized whenever possible and is viewed as gratuitous, not necessary. Furthermore Jain scriptures specifically state that it is a serious impropriety to harm another living being:

"He who harms animals has not understood or renounced deeds of sin" Jain Sutra "

For those of us who, after personally observing, as well as studying the evidence in research studies, have concluded that animals are capable of suffering, of experiencing pain the position that animals may be harmed or even killed for human benefit is untenable. Many possess a full array of emotions such as joy, pleasure, fear, anger, jealousy and even greed; they teach, nurture and protect their young; some mate for life and mourn the deaths of relatives, while innumerable others provide service and companionship to mankind.

Many of us have left our birth religions, because we have found the tolerance and teaching of acceptable harm to animals intolerable, We view the preaching of compassion, mercy and forgiveness by our religious leaders as disingenuous, since it does not include the suffering of all sentient creatures. We observe that while they recite lovely words, they also sanctify and endorse violence to animals in the name of Religion.

Others have arrived at the conclusion that their religion is incompatible with compassion for animals and therefore no longer feel comfortable attending religious events. Still others leave all religion and embrace secular humanism, or seek out religions which offer a more compassionate view of animals, while some attempt to advocate for change from within.

The model of animal compassion, with human need at its core, is based on biblical interpretations of a hierarchical scheme which grants dominion over animals to man and therefore implies that the lives of humans are more valuable. While dominion ought to imply protection and caring, because of the provision that animals may indeed be harmed/killed to benefit man, as they are unable to defend themselves, the result has been untold suffering for untold numbers of living beings, especially those designated as "food" animals.

Compassion should be measured, not by how we treat our equals, but how we treat the vulnerable and weak among us. Despite claims of compassion, allowing only necessary violence to animals has not resulted in less suffering during the 5000 years this model has been followed. Instead it has been used to justify every manner of cruelty imaginable, from ghoulish experiments which torment, maim and kill them, to terrifying deaths in slaughter houses to the killing of homeless domestic animals in the name of convenience to humans.

At its very root the argument of allowable harm to animals for human benefit is inconsistent and unjustifiable as it is not possible to assess "necessity" and certainly not in terms arrived at thousands of years ago.

Thus, the question not addressed by this premise is how to determine what is "necessary".
Today, we do accept that it is necessary to slaughter an animal to placate an angry God; this is of little consolation to all the animals murdered in the name of pleasing God, when it was deemed "necessary". Even to this day animal sacrifice continues as custom, in some societies. While it is based on superstition and fear, it is still justified in the name of necessity.

Necessity is relative: a furrier, for example, would argue that the survival of his family depends on selling fur. Innumerable cruel industries are justified by the premise of "necessity". In other words, when you set the bar at permissible killing when "necessary', the bar can be adjusted to suit those seeking to benefit from animal misery.

And while the killing of animals has been justified on the grounds that meat consumption is necessary for survival, we are now learning that it is possible to be healthy and strong while following a meat-free diet. What was once deemed "necessary" is not, and in fact, innumerable recent studies have shown that a meat-based diet is unhealthy as well as one of the primary causes of devastation to our planet.
Thus, if we do not have sufficient understanding to determine what is 'necessary' killing, then how can we justify it? In hindsight animal sacrifice and meat consumption are not necessary yet so much suffering has resulted from these so called 'necessary' practices..

Yet another problem inherent in permission to kill is that taking the life of an animal is such a violent act that it overshadows any concept or words of compassion which are reduced to empty rhetoric in the face of such violence. Permissible harming/ killing of animals cannot be included in a system that claims to be compassionate and just - it is a contradiction so strong that any other measures of compassion are negated and neutralized.

The bottom line is that there is no compassionate way to kill an animal. Animals suffer terribly when they are killed. They are frightened and in pain. No form of slaughter is compassionate: both ritualistic and secular slaughter are carried out with total disregard to the suffering inflicted on the victims.

Finally and most significantly, there are human societies which have remained meat free and do not use leather, fur or silk. The ancient, yet timely Jain religion of India, is such a tradition. It is based on the belief of non-violence to all beings. This is not just a noble sentiment, but a life style that has allowed Jains to live healthy and well-balanced lives for many millennia.

If this society has been able to survive and thrive for so long without consuming animal flesh, how then can the killing of animals to meet human needs ever be considered necessary?

It is time to rethink the archaic concept of 'necessary' killing endorsed by the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic traditions as it represents a concept which promotes and results in much UNnecessary misery and suffering.

When such religious views of animals become part of the mainstream culture, the result is every manner of exploitation and gratuitous violence. An epidemic of such acts indicates that the youth in such cultures are prone to seeking thrills from the gratuitous abuse of animals and random acts of violence to humans. In view of such spiritual poverty one has to wonder what has gone wrong.

"No society that feeds its children on tales of
successful violence can expect them not to believe that
violence in the end is rewarded" Margaret Mead.

What then are we teaching our children that allows them to harm and kill animals for sheer pleasure? The answer lies in religious models which sanctify, endorse, and facilitate violence to animals, couched in the language of compassion which does not ring true. What does it say to young people when the number of slaughtered animals escalates during the religious holidays of these faiths? Teaching young people that it is permissible to kill animals to meet a human need, is often mistakenly interpreted as a free license to harm and kill.

The evidence is clear. In the West, the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic traditions have failed to instill a message of compassion for living beings, This failure has resulted in enormous and extensive abuse all within the realm of what is considered "necessary" and has led to a proliferation of acts of sadism and gratuitous violence.

As long as religions continue to perpetuate the argument that violence to animals is allowable to meet a human need, there will be no peace, just more of the same.

"Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all living beings, we are all savages". -- Thomas Edison

If the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic tradition is not able to extend its circle of compassion to include animals, it will continue to become more irrelevant. The conclusion is irrefutable, as compassion for animals begins to take hold in society, religions which endorse abuse will continue the trend of diminishing membership and decline in importance.

It is my deepest hope that you will consider the possibility that animal lives do not have to be sacrificed to improve the lives of humans and that you can begin to embrace and instruct your followers in a broader definition of compassion for all of creation.
.
Respectfully,

BDO DROP HLS AFTER ONLY TWO WEEKS, CONTACT NEW FINANCIAL TARGET - FORTRESS

The only reason HLS are open is because of a loan they acquired in 2006. For
three years we have been investigating this loan, whilst HLS has done all they
can to keep the lenders secret. As we revealed in the last action alert, one of
the lenders is Anchor Sub Funding who were set up in Luxembourg by BDO for the
sole purpose of lending HLS $30 million. We can now reveal that BDO were paid
by another company to set up Anchor Sub Funding. Since our last action alert,
BDO have cut all ties with Anchor Sub Funding.

The company behind Anchor Sub Funding is the Fortress Investment Group who are
a global investment company, with offices in several countries. We are calling
on them to cut all ties with Huntingdon Life Sciences and call in the loan with
immediate effect.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to you in relation to a $30 million loan that has been made to
Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) via your Drawbridge Special Opportunities Fund.
Without this loan HLS could not remain open and therefore Fortress are in large
part responsible for the cruel and violent actions going on inside HLS. The
fact that Fortress have set up a front company in Luxembourg called Anchor Sub
Funding shows that a lot of effort has been put into keeping this loan secret,
presumably to stop HLS' horrific record of cruelty, violence and law breaking
from tarnishing Fortress' reputation.

HLS have a long history of violence; they were most famously exposed in 1997
when channel 4 TV filmed workers punching beagle puppies in the face. In 2005
ex workers spoke out about cruelty they had witnessed and in 2008 Animal
Defenders International went undercover inside HLS exposing cruel primate
experiments and disgusting conditions. HLS also have a track record of law
breaking and manipulation of data. During just one primate study, HLS broke the
law 526 times; and workers have been caught taking drugs and drinking on site.

HLS' financials are in a dire state, and there is a high risk that HLS would
fail to make its loan repayments to you, you may already be aware that they
have failed to meet loan commitments during 2009. This is due to a significant
loss in custom and terrible share price, on top of this many of their
shareholders are filing class action lawsuits against HLS after HLS' board of
directors accepted CEO Andrew Baker's offer to buy out the failing company for
a very low price of $8.50 a share.

Please don't take my word for it, if you want to see the state HLS are in
please read the Plymouth Report which HLS recently filed with the SEC:
www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1158833/000115883309000045/exhibit99.htmI am
urging you to explore all get out clauses in this loan and reel it in. I also
urge you to raise these issues with everyone you can within the company and do
everything in your power to halt your support of Huntingdon Life Sciences.
Please raise this issue at any meetings you attend, and let all your colleagues
know about HLS.

Yours faithfully

Court Orders Fur False Advertising Case to Proceed

Court Orders Fur False Advertising Case to Proceed Against Major
Retailers

Suit Challenging Widespread Fur Mislabeling Could Go To Trial Later This
Year

WASHINGTON (Sept. 25, 2009) - The District of Columbia Superior Court
issued a long-awaited ruling
clearing the way for a lawsuit accusing several of the
nation's largest retailers - including Lord & Taylor, Macy's, Neiman
Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue - of engaging in false advertising and
mislabeling of fur garments. The suit was filed in 2008 by The Humane
Society of the United States, arguing that these deceptive practices
mislead consumers into unknowingly purchasing animal fur products and
increase consumer confusion over the type and origin of fur used on
clothing.

"Consumers have a right to know what they're buying, but many major
retailers keep selling 'faux fur' jackets that turn out to be real
animal fur," said Jonathan R. Lovvorn, vice president and chief counsel
for animal protection litigation for The HSUS. "Macy's, Saks, Neiman
Marcus and Lord & Taylor just don't seem to care if consumers are
deceived, even though real fur is something many consumers are
determined to avoid."

Over the last three years, The HSUS has identified dozens of falsely
advertised or falsely labeled fur garments across the retail industry.
Although many of these garments were advertised or labeled as "faux
fur," they were often fur from raccoon dogs, a member of the canine
family native to parts of Asia, who have been documented to be skinned
alive in China.

The lawsuit - filed under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act -
alleges that the companies "misrepresent" the characteristics of the
fur-trimmed garments by (1) advertising and labeling products as "faux
fur," when they are, in fact, derived from real animal fur or (2)
advertising and labeling products as common raccoon, fox or rabbit fur
when they are, in fact, made from the wholly distinct species of raccoon
dog - a member of the dog family. The complaint also alleges violations
of the federal Fur Products Labeling Act and Federal Trade Commission
Act, which also prohibit the false advertising and mislabeling of any
fur product.

To view the complaint, learn about raccoon dogs and their mistreatment,
and more, visit humanesociety.org/furfree
.

Examples of Defendants' Deceptive Ads and Labels:

* In December 2008, Lord & Taylor sold jackets labeled as
"polyester" fur at its retail store in Kensington, Md. Testing found
that this purportedly faux fur garment was actually made from real
raccoon dog and rabbit.
* Macy's - through its retail division, Bloomingdale's -
advertised and sold a "faux fur" jacket on its online store in 2007 and
again in 2008. However, both of these jackets contained animal fur.
* In November 2008, Neiman Marcus sold a coat on its Web site,
that although advertised as "faux fur," was genuine rabbit fur. Neiman
Marcus also sold a jacket labeled as fake "polyester" fur at its retail
store in McLean, Va. Testing later found this jacket to be made from
real raccoon dog.
* In December 2007, Saks Fifth Avenue advertised and sold a "faux
fur" jacket through its online store that was later determined to be
genuine rabbit fur.

Duct-taped cat is recovering after being dumped

How mean have we become? The Pennsylvania SPCA would like to see whoever wrapped the cat in this video in duct tape in handcuffs and is offering a $2,000 reward for information. The female cat is doing fine now, responding well to the attention from the PSPCA staff who spent an hour freeing her.

Someone wrapped the cat, head to toe, in duct-tape and dumped her in a Philadelphia yard. The woman who lives in the house noticed the cat when she looked out her window. George Bengal from the PSPCA said of the cat they've fondly named Sticky:

"I've never seen an animal totally like a mummy - wrapped in duct-tape. Whoever did this took a lot of time. It was very methodical... [It is] a very sick individual that would do something like this to a cat."

Killing One Primate to Save Another: The Ethics of Animal Rights

A disturbing story emerged this week of a scientist leaving his
research out of fear for his and his family's lives. What are our
responsibilities in this area and what do our traditions have to say
about it?
...
A fire-bomb is left (undetonated) on the porch. Lives and careers
shift. Laws are made and broken. What is it? Religious conflict?
Ideological rifts? Kind of.

In this week's Nature, the scientist Dario Ringach tells the
disturbing story of how, because he did research on primates, he was
targeted for violent treatment by so-called ‘animal rights
extremists’; how after the fire-bomb incident (the bomb was
accidentally left on the wrong scientist’s doorstep), for fear of his
and his family’s safety, he discontinued his animal research; how he
is speaking up now, three years later, because “we’re getting awfully
close to the situation where somebody may be killed. There is a
general trend toward polarization in our society. . .”
...
When I teach research ethics to the future scientists of the
world—graduate students and post-doctoral fellows—we spend a lot of
time talking about this. Not just the important party line of the
special offices at research facilities devoted to animal care:
“refine, reduce, and reuse.” But also about deeper questions: should
we do research with animals at all? With certain animals and not
others (much of basic research is done on yeast, worms, fruitflies,
and mice)? And what kinds of research (research that might cause pain
or even death, observational research, etc.)?
...
There are, after all, more than enough rich and important questions to
chew on: (1) one day—a day some (not me) believe is nigh—we will no
longer need animal models at all; we will develop artificial models
which will work as well to accomplish our goals and test our ideas for
basic knowledge, drugs, and other therapies; (2) another animal we do
a lot of testing on is ourselves, humans; if we’re going to raise
questions about research on animals, we must carefully examine
research on humans; (3) and a final irony: the more research we do on
animals, the more we discover, for better or worse, just how similar
they are to us.
