Uganda: Govt Plans to Export Monkeys to Russia

Zahra Abigaba and Al-Mahdi Ssenkabirwa

11 April 2010

Zahra Abigaba & Al-Mahdi SsenkabirwaPalm oil growers in Kalangala
District can now sigh with relief after it emerged that the government
was planning to export monkeys that had become a menace to Russia.

Tourism Minister Sarapio Rukundo told Sunday Monitor on Thursday that
plans were underway to issue licenses to companies that will sale them
overseas.

"We have plans to start giving out licenses to some people to export
them (monkeys) to Russia and in return the country will be getting
foreign exchange the same way we reap from local tourism," the minister
said adding, "We are going to send our team on the ground to investigate
those reports (of killing monkeys) and if we find out that it is true,
the perpetrators will be jailed."

The minister was reacting to media reports that authorities in Kalangala
had sanctioned the extermination of all monkeys to save the oil palm
fields on Bugala Islands.

The island is the second largest on Lake Victoria after Ukerewe and has
67,000 acres. Monkeys in the area help themselves on ripe palm fruits -
something that has left many farmers in the area counting hefty losses.

MORE INFORMATION AND ADDITIONAL WAYS TO HELP

Seeking
to end Florida's decades old ban on offshore drilling, state
legislators and Governor Charlie Crist plus the U.S. Congress and
President Obama are being courted by big oil and their lobbyists.
Their message - open Florida's state and federal waters to oil rigs
starting just 3 miles off our shores. Even with the most advanced
technology, oil spills and accidents can and do happen. See photos
below from the 'state of the art' oil rig off the coast of Australia
that went up in flames in the summer of 2009 - and seriously damaged
Australia's sea life in the process.

Our
beaches, ecosystem, marine wildlife and tourist based economy are all
at risk. See also image below of the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current.
Depending on location, winds and currents, our east coast beaches,
Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys are clearly in the line of fire from
an accident in the Gulf:

If
you live in Florida, join your friends and neighbors on the beach of
your choice to let our lawmakers know that Floridians are united in our
stand against oil drilling in our waters. If you don't live in
Florida, consider this. Florida's many national parks, preserves,
seashores, wildlife refuges and marine sanctuaries are the property of
ALL Americans. Everglades National Park (the only place on earth where
alligators and crocodiles live side by side and home to dozens of
threatened and endangered species) is also a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, International Biosphere Reserve, and Ramsar Wetland of
International Importance. It is part of the natural heritage of our
entire planet.

According to the U.S. Minerals Management
Service, 2005's Hurricane Katrina alone destroyed 113 oil platforms and
damaged 457 oil pipelines in the western Gull of Mexico - in addition
to an estimated 7 to 9 million gallons of oil spilled onshore from
damaged pipelines, refineries, and storage tanks. The risk of major
spills to hurricane prone Florida is very real.

In a 2004 press release, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush made the following statement:

“Florida

In
the future, we will take no satisfaction whatsoever from telling our
decision makers, "We told you so." At this critical time in our
nation's debate over energy, the Sunshine State (with more solar
potential than any state in the eastern United States) deserves a far
better energy alternative than a dangerous venture into the offshore
oil business. Help send the right message on February 13th. Instead

Advocates Educating about University Meat Problem!

By David Cantor

In many states, from Florida to Hawai’i to New York,
Responsible Policies for Animals members and other advocates
for animal rights and plants-only eating are using special
RPA fliers to inform land-grant university (LGU) supporters
of the need to get those massive, popular institutions out of
the meat industry – including dairy, fish, eggs, and feed.
It’s easy, fun, and inexpensive to use RPA’s LGU fliers! –
and crucial for ending increasingly inhumane treatment of animals
and the worsening human and environmental destruction linked to
meat.
Based on sports and social life more than education– which
LGU meat programs corrupt by teaching that using animals can
be humane, that humans naturally eat from animals, and other
false tenets of carnism – LGU alumni, students, parents, and
others promote LGUs with their automobiles.
Anyone who wants a supply of RPA’s LGU fliers for LGU
automobiles lets RPA know -- at RPA4all@aol.com, 215-886-7721,
or P.O. Box 891, Glenside, PA 19038, USA.
RPA quickly sends colorful & convenient fliers tailored to each
advocate’s state – headed, for example, “Get Cornell University
on the Good Food Track!” (New York). The fliers explain the
LGU meat problem and provide names and addresses so LGU
supporters can write to the LGU and the governor.
RPA e-mails advocates their LGU's car-accessories Webpage
URL. That makes it easier to spot LGU cars. Advocates then
spot cars with their LGU’s decals, magnets, license-plate frames,
and more – and place fliers on their windshields. Advocates
may also politely approach people wearing LGU garb and ask
them to accept a flier. Once they start looking, advocates find
an amazing number of LGU-promoting autos.
Advocates may request new supplies of fliers at any time and
share them with friends to help spread the word.
America’s LGUs are the single biggest problem for nonhuman
animals, humans, and ecosystems due to their college-of-
agriculture meat-industry programs, misleadingly called
“animal science.” Meat is not agriculture, and raising animals
for food prevents production of the foods people need.
Institutions – not facts about animal abuse, human health, and
ecosystem disruption – are the most powerful factor in whether
people eat from animals. And our LGUs are the most powerful
institutions ensuring that people keep to the extremely
inhumane, health-destroying, ecologically devastating
standard American diet, known to experts as "SAD."
It is not assumed that many LGU promoters will jump at
the chance to fix their LGU’s meat problem. But they must
know they are responsible for harm being done by the
institution they promote and that their LGU is a big reason
for the destructive diet they and their families consume.
And some are sure to discuss the fliers with others,
including at the LGU they love. They must question their
LGU’s meat problem – in almost all cases complete with
slaughterhouse and sales of meat, ice cream, cheese, and
other “animal science” atrocities on campus.
Additional ways to participate in RPA’s groundbreaking
10,000 Years Is Enough campaign to get our LGUs out of
the meat industry:
Write to the main land-grant universities of all 50 states
and the governors of all 50 states – lists at Campaigns page
of _www.RPAforAll.org_ (http://www.RPAforAll.org
) or by request at
_RPA4all@aol.com_ (mailto:RPA4all@aol.com
,
215-886-7721, or P.O. Box 891, Glenside, PA 19038, USA.
Write to your elected representative and senator in your
state legislature and your elected U.S. representative and
senator. RPA is glad to assist you in obtaining contact
information. It is also available at state and U.S. legislature
websites.
Send RPA any replies to your letters – P.O. Box 891, Glenside,
PA 19038, USA. Write follow-up letters.
RPA assists many people with letter-writing.
Support RPA. RPA members keep the 10,000 Years Is Enough
campaign going. As long as massive, popular, prestigious
LGUs serve the meat industry and promote carnism, there is
no way out of the extremely inhumane, health-destroying,
ecologically devastating meat industry. Additional information

Key Indian Elephant Corridor and Habitat Successfully Protected

Ecological Internet's Earth Action Network again demonstrates its ability to successfully internationalize strong, local environmental sustainability protest -- please support EI's continued success now during crucial fund-raiser at http://www.climateark.org/shared/donate/

CONTACT: Dr. Glen Barry, glenbarry@ecologicalinternet.org

After prolonged protest by Ecological Internet, Rainforest Rescue and other partners, the Indian government has decided against locating a Neutrino Observatory (INO), an underground experimental physics project, in prime Indian elephant and other endangered animal and plant habitat. Indian officials in a new report have decided the Neutrino Observatory would gravely impact the Mudumulai Tiger Reserve, an important corridor for Indian elephants and other wildlife, and will be moved to a more suitable site. Priya Davidar of Pondicherry University in Pondicherry, India, noted "This is a rare victory for conservation (in India)."

Ecological Internet spearheaded and provided the Internet protest platform for a loose coalition of environmentalists and conservation biologists working to block the project. Some 9,000 global Ecological Internet action network participants from 96 countries sent nearly 100,000 protest emails over the past 9 months [1]. This international action supported on-the-ground organizing by others including the Rainforest Information Centre and noted environmentalists including John Seed, Priya Davida and Ingmar Lee of Canada (who initially proposed the campaign).

The area contains one of the largest contiguous forests in Asia and sustains India's largest wild populations of Asian Elephants and Bengal Tigers. The government's report confirmed our allegations that the site "is in close proximity to the core/critical tiger habitats of Bandipur and Mudumalai Tiger reserves. It is also an elephant corridor, facilitating elephant movement from the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats and vice-versa." Nilgiri contains over a fifth of the India's vertebrates and flowering plants, 15% of its butterflies, and numerous endangered species.

"Ecological Internet has again demonstrated the importance of ecologically aware global citizens joining together to protest on the Internet in support of local conservation protests. We are very pleased to have been filling this role in the global movement for ecological sustainability for ten years, and hope to continue doing so should our current end-of-year fund-raiser be successful", notes Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet's President. "With continued support through alert participation at http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/
-- and tax-deductible donations at http://www.climateark.org/shared/donate/
-- we envision even more ecologically sufficient policy success in the future."

The Green War on Pets

People who care about the environment are often people who also care
about animals—the kind of folks who take in stray cats and adopt
shelter dogs, driving them home in a Prius. But over the past month,
the tide of green opinions seems to have turned against those
sweet-faced puppies and kittens, which some environmentalists view as
a waste of precious resources. Instead of having a pet, you may as
well get an SUV.
...
Since much of the footprint for our pets comes from the beef we
produce to feed them, one way to cut a pet's carbon footprint is to
feed it a vegetarian diet—a hot controversy among vegan and vegetarian
pet owners. Veterinarians and the FDA discourage feeding cats and dogs
a solely vegetarian diet—especially cats, which are true carnivores,
and cannot digest many of the nutrients in vegetables. Some vegetarian
dog owners feed their pets a grain-based diet and nutritional
supplements. Others reduce food waste by always feeding pets their
leftovers. Always consult your veterinarian about changes to your
pet's diet.

No to Copenhagen 'Carbon Logging'

ACTION ALERT PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!

No to Copenhagen 'Carbon Logging'
GOOD REDD Fully Protects and Restores Old Forests as a Global Climatic Imperative

By ClimateArk Climate Change Portal http://www.climateark.org/

a project of Ecological Internet
November 5, 2009

Copenhagen climate talks must not provide 'Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation' (REDD) carbon market funds for old, natural forest logging, or for conversion of natural or semi-natural forests and other ecosystems to plantations. Ending deforestation and degradation of old and relatively ecologically intact primary and old growth forest ecosystems, and the ecological restoration of late-successional old growth forests, are keystone responses to maintaining global climate, biodiversity, water and ecosystems.

TAKE ACTION HERE NOW:
http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=protect_old_forests

Indications are that UN Copenhagen climate talks will allow selective logging and plantation establishment in primary and old-growth forests as a means to "fight" climate change. In draft texts, European and African negotiators have removed safeguards against the conversion of natural forests to forest plantations, and language ensuring first time industrial logging of primary rainforests are excluded from carbon finance has still not been included. This despite the fact no single international ecological policy initiative would protect global climate (and biodiversity and ecosystems) more effectively than protecting and restoring old forests wherever possible.

Old forest logging must end -- to maintain climatic stability and achieve global ecological sustainability. This requires a rejection of the myth of "Sustainable Forest Management" in old forests, acknowledging that fully-intact, natural old forests both remove and store long-term, far more carbon than natural forests that are selectively logged or replaced by plantations. Timber industry propaganda -- claiming logging ancient forests somehow saves them -- has been greatly aided by large NGOs like Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace, who continuously greenwash unknown amounts of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) "certification" of old forest logging as desirable and even sustainable.

Inuit angry over U.S. proposal to eliminate all trade in polar bears

By Bob Weber (CP)

Canadian Inuit are outraged over a U.S. plan to use an international treaty to eliminate all trade in polar bears anywhere in the world.
They say it would cripple one of their few industries and they're calling on the federal government to step in.
"We're fighting with Goliath here," said Gabriel Nirlungyak, director of wildlife with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., which oversees the Nunavut land claim.
"We want our government to defend us."
On Friday, Tom Strickland, the United States assistant secretary of the interior, released a proposal to the 175 countries which have signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It says polar bears should be moved to a classification that would outlaw all commercial trade in the animals.
"The proposals submitted this week will improve protections for dozens of declining species, while improving enforcement and implementation of (the convention) for many others," Strickland said in a release.
The bears are threatened by habitat loss due to melting sea ice caused by climate change, he said.
Previous moves by the American government have already killed most of the market for U.S. sport hunters by preventing them from bringing hides back with them. If the current proposal is accepted at the convention's next meeting in March, it will wipe out all other markets, said Nirlungyak.
"If this goes ahead, it will stop all sport hunts. It will be quite devastating."
Sport hunters pay up to $30,000 for the opportunity of bagging one of the world's largest land predators and Inuit hunters can get up to $150 a foot for a bear hide.
Nirlungyak said there's no evidence the animals are currently endangered and added that Canadian populations are well-managed. Canada has about two-thirds of the world's 25,000 bears.
Nunavut issues a total of 518 tags yearly for both subsistence and sport hunts, although not all the tags are used. The territorial government is seeking to reduce some of those quotas, although Inuit hunters are resisting those moves.
The latest data suggests eight of the world's 19 subpopulations of bears are decreasing, three are stable and one is increasing. Not enough is known about the other seven to assign a trend.
Nirlungyak points out that trade in no other species has been banned under the convention on the basis of forecasts.
"There's no justification. There's no need when you look at the science. It's a political move.
"We want the Canadian government to defend us and oppose this listing."
An Environment Canada spokeswoman said in an email that Canada does not support the U.S. request to change the polar bear's status. She said Canadian representatives would lobby other countries to reject the proposal, which requires a two-thirds majority to pass.
The American proposal even surprised some environmentalists.
"Our initial analysis indicated that hunting was not the primary threat," said Geoff York, the World Wildlife Fund's director of polar bear conservation. "We were not expecting any country to advocate a proposal for polar bears on this."
York said any new protection for polar bears must have the support of the people who live with them.
"We have concerns about the impact ... on northern people," he said. "The people on the ground have to be involved with the solution."
However, Andrew Wetzler of the Natural Resources Defence Council, which lobbied for the proposal, said that any extra stress on bear populations should be eliminated as they struggle to adapt to their new climate.
"As populations start to decline, it becomes much more important to keep other factors affecting (them) to a minimum," said Wetzler. "We think that trophy hunting is inappropriate."
This year's summer sea ice reached its third-lowest level in 30 years of record-keeping.
Wetzler said the Canadian government should provide transition funding to Inuit communities to wean them off the hunting industry.

CITES to eye international ban on polar bear trade
Environment Canada report could be crucialNUNATSIAQ NEWS

Inuit organizations finally woke up to speak out against a proposal from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that could kill the polar bear sports hunt in Nunavut.
The proposal, announced Oct. 16, which would lead to a ban on trade in polar bear trophies, ignores “the demonstrated ability of Inuit to manage their own resources wisely and sustainably,” said Duane Smith, president of Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada.
The U.S. agency plans to submit its proposal to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species when the group meets in Qatar next March.
“Limiting commercial trade in this species will address a source of non-climate stress to polar bear populations, and contribute to long-term recovery,” said a news release from the wildlife agency.
Its proposal would see the polar bear moved up from CITES’s appendix II to appendix I.
Species on Appendix I are considered threatened by extinction, and CITES prohibits international trade in specimens of these species.
“Canadian Inuit are successfully managing their polar bear populations without interference from the USA government or special interest groups,” Smith said in an Oct. 16 news release.
“Canadian polar bear populations are currently healthy. If, in the future, they are threatened, the management bodies would review their processes and adjust accordingly. We should let them do their job,” Smith said.
Tourists and sport hunters who sometimes accompany Inuit in regulated polar bear sports hunts provide important income for entire communities and have no effect on the quotas set to maintain healthy bear populations, Smith said.
“The USA proposal challenges our right as Inuit to sustainably exercise our traditional rights and practices to harvest polar bears. We are becoming an endangered species ourselves.”
Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. also sent out a news release on Oct. 16, noting its opposition to the U.S. proposal to up-list the polar bear’s status.
“If the proposal is passed, it will have a devastating effect on our communities. Inuit understand the importance of conservation of the polar bear because the animal is so important to our society, culture and economy, the same was the automobile is to the American society and economy,” said NTII vice-president Raymond Nincheocheak.
“We do not want to be further restricted beyond the quota systems that we have been participating in now for a number of decades,” said Mary Simon, the president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, in an ITK news release, also issued Oct. 16.
But none of these groups acknowledge that an upcoming report from Environment Canada will also play into CITES’s eventual decision whether or not to support the U.S. proposal that would stop international trade in all polar bear trophies.
Under CITES, Environment Canada is responsible for evaluating whether the export of a species from Canada will be detrimental or not to its survival in the wild.
Its report, referred to as a “non-detriment finding,” is not supposed to be affected by socio-economic considerations — even if the value of the sports polar bear hunt to Nunavut has been estimated at about $2.9 million each year.
The department may decide make a negative “non-detriment finding” to CITES on the export of polar bear trophies from some polar bear populations in Nunavut — such as the Baffin Bay, where environment minister Jim Prentice wanted the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board to recommend a lower quota.
Canada would be in a much stronger position to argue against the proposal if it looks as if Canada is “managing issues of conservation concern such as overharvest,” Prentice wrote the NWMB.
Environment Canada has to make a positive recommendation on the impact of the polar bear hunt in certain areas of Nunavut for Canada to legally issue an export permit for polar bear products, including skin, fur, claws, skulls and stuffed animals, from those areas.
A negative “non-detriment finding” would mean that the trade in these hides and trophies may harm the species’ survival.
CITES rulings already restrict the trade of 800 species close to extinction, such as tigers, great apes, certain parrots, certain species of orchids and cacti, and some timber species.

Wildlife Groups Commend the Interior Department for Seeking to Halt Polar Bear Trade

October 16, 2009

Trade in Polar Bear Skin Rugs and Other Parts Threatens the Species
WASHINGTON — The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International, International Fund for Animal Welfare and Defenders of Wildlife applaud the United States Department of the Interior for submitting a proposal to next year's meeting of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to stop the international trade in polar bears. The meeting is set for March 13-25 in Doha, Qatar.
"By submitting this proposal, the United States is, once again, leading the way to save this magnificent species from extinction. International trade in polar bear parts and products is exacerbating the devastating impact that climate change is already having on the polar bear. We should not be making rugs out of polar bears at a time when they are threatened with extinction," said Teresa M. Telecky, Ph.D., director of wildlife for Humane Society International, the global affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States.
There are presently between 20,000 and 25,000 polar bears and the number is decreasing.
"On May 8, 2009, Secretary Salazar said that he and President Obama were fully committed to protecting polar bears, and that we must do everything we can to eliminate all threats to the species. With this laudable action, they are making good on that commitment. By uplisting the species at the next CITES conference, the U.S. will help prevent the deaths of hundreds of polar bears killed needlessly for the commercial market," said Jeff Flocken, D.C. office director, International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Polar bears are completely dependent on sea ice, which they use for hunting prey, reproduction and movement. Ongoing atmospheric pollution is causing oceanic and atmospheric warming, leading to reductions in sea ice. Some scientists have concluded that polar bears will not survive past the end of this century due to the complete loss of summer sea ice.
In addition to hunting trophies, polar bear parts — skin, fur, claws, skulls and even stuffed bears — enter international commercial trade. More than 500 polar bear skins are traded annually; most come from Canada and most go to Japan.
In 2008, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. This ended the importation to the United States of trophies of polar bears killed by American sport hunters. Although hunters from other countries can still import trophies, the United States was by far the largest importer and American trophy hunters had driven this large-scale commercial killing.
"While we cannot stop the impacts of global warming on polar bears immediately, one thing we can do is quickly address other threats which are heightening the bear's problems, such as the commercial trade. By increasing protections for polar bears under CITES, we can start to give the polar bear some more protections while we take the necessary steps to address global warming," said Rodger Schlickeisen, president, Defenders of Wildlife.
The proposal would transfer the polar bear from CITES Appendix II, which allows regulated international commercial trade, to Appendix I, which prohibits all international commercial trade in the listed species. The purpose of CITES is to prevent over-exploitation of species through international trade.
The Appendix I designation would mean that countries agree to prohibit international trade for primarily commercial purposes and thus ensure that international trade will not contribute to the ongoing decrease in polar bear numbers. Appendix I listing will not affect native subsistence hunting or use of polar bears.

U.S. Interior Department proposes international ban on the trade in polar bears

Animal rights groups today praised the U.S. Department of the Interior
for submitting a proposal to ban the international trade in polar
bears.

If approved by the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora at its meeting next March
in Qatar, the proposal would make commercial trade in polar bears
illegal. Currently, international commercial trade is regulated.

The ban would not apply to native subsistence hunting of polar bears.

"International trade in polar bear parts and products is exacerbating
the devastating impact that climate change is already having on the
polar bear," said Teresa M. Telecky, director of wildlife for Humane
Society International.

The joint demarche, a formal diplomatic protest signed by the UK, the US and Australia among others, states that the 26 governments were "deeply disappointed" with the former Icelandic government's decision to authorise commercial whaling. Earlier this year, the outgoing Fisheries and Agriculture Minister granted commercial whaling quotas of up to 150 Fin whales and 100 Minke whales a year for five years.

2009 quota increase despite lack of market
The current government has kept these kill quotas in place for just one year, but the catch allocation has been increased further to 200 fin whales and 200 Minke whales for 2009, despite a limited domestic market for Minke whale meat and no market for Fin whale meat. Since June, Iceland's whalers have harpooned 125 fins and 79 Minke whales.

Yellowstone Grizzlies Back on Endangered Species List

Written by Daniel Hohler

Published on September 23rd, 2009Posted in Action & Activism, Endangered Species, Environmental & Climate Science, Environmental Policies, Legislation, Nature & Conservation

In 2007 federal protections were dropped for the protection of Yellowstone grizzlies. Ever since then, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition have been fighting to give protection back to the bears. They argued that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) failed to address the loss of essential food sources for the bears, whitebark pine seeds and cutthroat trout.

On Monday, September 21 they finally achieved what they were fighting for when Judge Donald Molloy ruled that inadequate regulatory mechanisms were put in place to manage the bears. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and six other groups, represented by Earthjustice, have a similar case pending in Idaho.

Whitebark pine forests are being decimated by a variety of threats that have emerged in high elevation environments as a result of climate change. Researchers worry that the trees, and the major food source for bears, are on the road to extinction.

“The Fish and Wildlife Service tried to pretend there wasn’t a problem, even as two key grizzly foods, cutthroat trout and whitebark pine, collapsed and mortalities went through the roof. A record 79 bears died last year, or 13% of the population, according to federal estimates.” - Louisa Willcox, senior wildlife advocate for NRDC

The judge’s decision came off scientific evidence that the grizzly’s habitat is in decline and cannot support the bear population. At least 18 bears have already been found dead in the Northern Rockies this year, and the population continues to crash. Federal protection is back for the bear, but environmental groups have been working hard to get whitebark pine on the endangered list as well. If the tree gets on the endangered list it will also provide additional protection for grizzlies. You read more about the petition below.

Double Whammy of Pollution for Mississippi River in Minnesota

Written by Dave Dempsey

Published on September 18th, 2009Posted in Health, Water

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee samples river water for endocrine disrupting pollutants.

Study results publicized this week suggest Twin Cities water resources and the Mississippi River downstream from the Cities are suffering from pollution by road salt and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

The results are from U.S. Geological Survey analysis of watersheds around the U.S. The road salt results indicate chloride levels that may imperil aquatic life in creeks and rivers in the Twin Cities. A study by the University of Minnesota released last winter found that about 70% of the salt applied to roads in the area remained in the Mississippi River and tributaries. Nearly 350,000 tons of road salt are applied for de-icing in the Twin Cities metropolitan area annually.

The U.S.G.S. also reported that 73% of male smallmouth bass sampled in the Mississippi River near Lake City, Minnesota have characteristics of both genders, which researchers believe may be the result of exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds in wastewater.
The Minnesota Legislature earlier this year appropriated funds provided by the state’s new conservation tax to continue and expand a study of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in wastewater conducted by the state Pollution Control agency. The Minnesota Department of Health has also received state funds to evaluate endocrine disruptors in the state. Targeted materials include PCBs, heavy metals, household compounds such as laundry detergent and shampoo, and many pharmaceuticals.

A local nonprofit organization, Friends of the Mississippi River, hosted a 2007 presentation by University of California researcher Dr. Tyrone Hayes about work he has done linking low levels of atrazine, a widely used agricultural herbicide, with feminization of amphibians. A 2008 state study found atrazine even in high-quality lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, suggesting the chemicals are also being transported through the air. Also in 2008, a state Pollution Control Agency staffer alleged in a lawsuit that he was fired for being a whistle-blower about atrazine pollution in the state. He later dropped the suit. The researcher, Paul Wotzka, continues to speak out publicly, recently telling Minnesota Public Radio that says animal tests tie atrazine in small amounts to birth defects. “If you were pregnant mother, drinking water in June and you had these high spikes of atrazine in your water, you would want to know about them,” he said.

Last winter’s University of Minnesota road salt report urged more judicious application, observing that the school had reduced its use of the de-icer 41% through such an initiative.

We've become our own predators

By Jason Miller
9/9/09
Our dominant culture, in which I fully admit to participating (despite mysignificant efforts to minimize my involvement) is wreaking havoc on this"pale blue dot" we call Earth. Climate change, scarce and tainted water, devastating levels of toxins in the environment, rampant consumerism thatgenerates truckloads of fetid refuse per second, massive deforestation, andthe Sixth Extinction[1] implicate humanity, and our socioeconomic/culturalconstruct we euphemistically call "civilization," as nothing short of theliving embodiment of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Our species, byvirtue of our chosen ways of interfacing with the world, personifies Death,Famine, War, and Pestilence. Despite our numerous worthwhile attributes andaccomplishments, humanity specializes in slaughter, mayhem, abject cruelty, genocide, ecocide, and all manner of destruction.
Gaia, the Earth, is our mother and we are engaging in matricide against her.Nonhuman animals are our brethren, and we are engaging in fratricide againstthem. Intentionally or not, we are on course to emulate Orestes and Cain. Asa deeply committed vegan and a practitioner of my own eclecticspirituality-in which I consider nonhuman animals and the Earth to besacred-this disturbs me in a profound way. Yet I find solace in the factthat Mother Earth was here long before our species became an infestation andthat unless we radically change our mode of existence, She will eradicate uslike the virulent pests that we are.
Whether we want to admit it or not, nearly all of our psyches have beentwisted, perverted and, in some instances, pulverized to the extent that welive and believe some of the most outlandish lies that an objective and sanemind could imagine, were such an observer somehow able to completelyextricate themselves from the tapestry of self-deceptions we call "reality."Our inculcation is so deep, the damage to our battered psyches so immense, and the appeal of industrial civilization's alluring artificial andpernicious comforts so strong that many people barricade their minds fromthe truth with a variety of potent psychological defenses, includingprojection, ad hominem attacks, scorn and ridicule, anti-intellectualism,appeals to tradition, distortion, rationalization and a host of others.
While it poses a monumental challenge, if we're going to stave offself-destruction and the annihilation of billions more nonhuman animalsalong the way, we must exorcise the psychic demons that keep our soulsshackled to the pathological and metastatic ways in which our speciesbehaves and organizes. Painful and seemingly impossible as it may be, thereare a number of deeply ingrained cultural memes and components that we needto significantly alter or obliterate to avert impending disaster.
Patriarchy, which infects and informs the monotheistic religions on whichmany of our morals, customs, and beliefs are based, serves as a source ofmany ills. One can smell the stink of adult male privilege wafting from ourcorridors of power, our universities, our corporations, our churches, ourlegal system-it's nearly ubiquitous. Women and children are still secondclass citizens, even in the so-called Westernized "liberal democracies."
The social impact on women and children is troubling enough, but male andmasculine predominance has far more profound and deleterious effects onnonhuman animals and the planet. Myths that man as hunter, man as carnivore, and man as uber-predator predominated throughout most of human history andthat engaging in such activities enabled us to become social and intelligentstill permeate the dominant culture like a foul stench. It is much morelikely and demonstrable that our ancestors were gatherers and foragers (atask in which women and men participated at least equally)-eating a dietthat was largely herbivorous (with occasional insects and scraps of "meat")and living as potential prey to large carnivores (a position in the food webwhich forced us to live much more cooperatively and to think critically toprotect ourselves, hence sharpening our capacity to communicate and toproblem-solve).[2] Our downfall was utilizing the means we developed todefend ourselves as tools of domination and predation.

46 Orangutans Released Back To Wild

BOS RETURNS 46 ORANGUTANS BACK TO THE WILD

Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) has successfully released 46 orangutans back into the wild. These orangutans had been rescued from starvation, injury, illness or captivity by BOSF’s Nyaru Menteng Rescue and Introduction Project, and have now been returned to a tropical rainforest in the remote heart of Borneo, where they should be safe from human persecution – and the devastation of their habitat by the palm oil industry.

Sign on to protect leatherbacks at Las Baulas

Dear Colleagues:

We are circulating the attached (also pasted at end of this email) scientist/organizat ional sign-on letter to urge the Costa Rican government to reject a current bill that proposes to downgrade Las Baulas National Park - the most important nesting beach for the eastern Pacific leatherback - to a National Wildlife Refuge and allow development at this critical nesting site.

Las Baulas National Park is critical to the survival of the Pacific leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), declared as critically endangered by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Populations of Pacific leatherback sea turtles have crashed by 90 percent over the past two decades and are not recovering. Today, fewer that 1,000 female leatherbacks survive in the entire eastern Pacific. Las Baulas National Park has an exceptional global value as it provides the most important nesting site for this remaining eastern Pacific population. Downgrading this national park and the subsequent development would have devastating impacts on the survival of the Pacific leatherback.

If you would like to sign on please reply to me karen@seaturtles. org with the following information:

Sra. Hannia M. Durán
Jefa de Area Comisión Permanente Especial de Ambiente
Asamblea Legislativa
San José, Costa Rica

Estimada Señora Durán:

RE: Law Project No. 17.383 entitled "Law to rectify the Leatherback Marine National Park's Boundaries and Creation of Guanacaste's Leatherback National Wildlife Refuge"

In 1995 Costa Rica recognized its unique responsibility in ensuring the continued survival of the Pacific leatherback by protecting one of the last nesting beaches in the eastern Pacific and the other delicate ecosystems of Ventanas, Grande, and Langosta Beach, through the creation of Las Baulas National Park by Law.

On behalf of the undersigned scientists and organizations we are writing to urge you to reject Law Project No. 17.383 pending before the Environment Commission of the Legislative Assembly, that proposes to downgrade Las Baulas National Park to a Mixed National Wildlife Refuge and open its beaches up to coastal construction projects. With Pacific leatherback sea turtles so perilously close to extinction it is inconceivable to remove this protection and allow development in sensitive areas near the turtles' nesting sites. Such developments will have a negative impact on the nesting process of the leatherback through lighting, additional access of people, vehicles and domestic animals, and could likely lead to the elimination of this most important population of leatherbacks.

In addition, if this legislation is passed it will undermine Costa Rica's reputation as a global leader in conservation through its "Peace with Nature" initiative. This policy catapulted Costa Rica to the front of the line of countries committed to the preservation and protection of their natural resources and its longstanding commitment to the preservation of sea turtles.

Over the past few years multiple bills have been written, each one proposing to rezone Las Baulas National Park and open its beaches up to coastal construction projects. Fortunately every one of these bills has been rejected. We urge you to do the same with bill 17.383 and continue Costa Rica's commitment to protecting the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle, and preserving its national parks and the extraordinary abundance of life protected within their boundaries.

Sincerely,

The Greening of Paint

Written by Dave Dempsey

Oregon this summer became the first state to enact in law a product stewardship law for the collection of leftover consumer paint. The pilot program, which expires in 2014, involves a consumer fee that a nonprofit organization established by paint producers uses to pay for the collection and proper disposal or reuse of the leftover paint.

Why does it matter? Because about 10% of all paint sold in the U.S, or 64 million gallons a year, becomes leftover. With no convenient options for reprocessing the paint, consumers may dispose of it in trash or pour it down floor drains or into storm sewers. Some paints include hazardous ingredients and many states and localities treat leftover paint as a household hazardous waste. The Product Stewardship Institute estimates it costs municipalities approximately $500 million annually to handle leftover paint.

The first legislature to approve legislation to create a pilot paint stewardship program was Minnesota’s, where passage happened in both 2008 and 2009, but Gov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed it both times because of the consumer fee the bill created. Consumers and businesses in Minnesota generate an estimated 3 million gallons of leftover paint each year. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says up to 60% by volume of household hazardous wastes in the state are leftover paint. A company in Fridley, Minnesota is filling part of the void by turning leftover paint into a product that it says is comparable in quality to new paint.

While states experiment with stewardship and other extended producer responsibility programs, paint industry guidelines for management of leftover paint encourage disposal of oil-based paint through local hazardous waste collections, while latex paint can be solidified before disposal in trash. Consumers are also urged to buy only the amount of paint they need for a project.

ARE WE REALLY CATTLE?

by Peter Chamberlin
August 20, 2009
Have we really become "We the sheeple," or are we still human beings? The planet is dying under the thrall of a small minority of men who think of the rest of the human race as "cattle," livestock for them to buy and sell.
The ruling class behaves much like a spoiled child, if they don’t get to have everything their way all of the time, they throw this massive temper tantrum and threaten to upset the whole game. They have gotten their way in everything for so long that they have fallen under the spell of their own propaganda. They believe that we are sub-human animals, who should be herded into the best outcome possible. But, have the rest of us begun to accept this as well?
As members of the human herd, most of us recoil at the "bovinian" suggestion, but consider just how much we do behave like a herd. We willingly accept being treated like a herd, trusting our lives to politicians because we appreciate not having to make hard decisions for ourselves, being contented as cows, as our leaders and their hired hands drive us down a path to destruction, for the sake of them making a few dollars more in profit.
Preserving profits for the ruling elite is the only motivation (other than media-manipulated patriotism and nationalism) compelling us to fight our resource wars in Asia and Africa. The leaders of the entire world pretend that we are there to fight against terrorism, even though they know that the terrorism comes with us, their hope being their own little "piece of the action." The American way is to wage war with dollars, as well as bombs.
What the hell is the matter with people? Has everyone so bought-in to the propaganda that leads them to their own deaths that they believe the lies that control us? Willfully following sell-out leaders, who are leading their own countries to death and slavery is more than merely suicidal, it’s something a dumb animal would do.
Does the herd even think of itself as human anymore? Would it really matter what the herd thought about anything, anyway? Nothing will change as long as we willingly accept this idiocy. We have not changed. We are still human beings. Our feelings and concerns for ourselves, our families and our friends are legitimate, and just as real and as valid as those shared by the ruling class elitists who send our sons and daughters into battle to control the gas and oil, just like everyone who is being targeted by our government as it sends forth Special Forces and their "Islamist" counterparts to kill, not in the name of freedom, but to seize unfair economic advantage!
The entire "conflict" within the "arc of crisis" that is schemed over by Brzezinski and friends is manufactured for our entertainment and distraction. It is foolishness to look at "militant Islamists" and the CIA Special Forces teams who are sent in to fight them as two separate entities, without realizing that they are one and the same.
In Central Asia, the scary "Islamists" appear, as if by magic, wherever the oil companies have an interest. Theories are floated that the sudden rush of militant extremists in western China and the former countries of the Soviet Union is explained as an unfortunate by-product of Pakistan’s anti-Taliban offensive, as militants trained in Pakistan’s FATA Region return to their native countries.
From Russia to China and southwards, attacks begin in targeted nations and then someone appears in the national media to warn of the "Islamist" threat. News stories begin to appear of running gun battles and explosions, linking all of them to the "militant" threat. Attacks are made upon adversaries of the United States and those countries then become blacklisted as unstable for development and the subservient, media dutifully reports that our enemies have been attacked our other enemies.
Whose interests does this serve—crazy militants, with their warped dreams of a "caliphate," or American oil companies, who are trying to undermine China, Iran and Russia? The "powers that be" are playing a very dangerous game with all of our lives.
How long will the countries targeted by American/Islamist limited warfare continue to tolerate this bold assault? China, in particular, is presently bound by the economic chains that have been forged with the United States. How much longer will it continue to abide provocations in Xinjiang and other Chinese interests from Central Asia, to Pakistan, to Africa? It would be extremely unprofitable right now for China to haul the United States before the UN Security Council or to take military actions in retaliation for this low-intensity war that has been waged upon them. But that will not always be true. When the American house of cards finishes collapsing all bets will be off.
Our new administration in Washington has been empowered with as mandate for change, yet the only change that they have opted for is to accelerate the plans for world conquest in Central Asia. The only real impediment to that plan is the American people. Will the people continue to tolerate Obama’s impersonation of Bush and allow this obscene escalation of the neocon wars?
The ruling class fears an aware, vigilant majority. They know the people’s power and they tremble before it. It is only the people themselves, the "sheeple," who fail to realize the awesome powers delegated into our hands. It upsets the self-appointed whenever anyone begins to regain any measure of that control back, depriving the secret rulers of their illegitimate power to dictate the terms of our lives. The worst thing of all for them would be if all people everywhere were suddenly allowed to start thinking for themselves, with everyone making their own decisions.
The human race finds itself in an extremely unusual dilemma; if the best-laid plans of mankind’s finest minds succeed, then humanity may cease to exist. If the plan that has been crafted by the finest minds, financed by the world’s greatest "benefactors" and supported by nearly every government on the face of the planet, succeeds, then "humankind" may cease to exist, to be replaced by a new master-race parasitic species and its new sub-human host species (the living remainder of the "useless eaters").
A great moment of crisis has been manufactured for us. The decisions that have been made have maneuvered us into a kill box, so that the harvesting of the "useless eaters" may begin.
If mankind as a whole cannot embrace a new benevolent identity and move forward together, then, thanks to our enslavement to technological advancements, our old malevolent identities are positioned to destroy all life on this planet. A decision to change must be made on a societal level. The world cannot change, humanity cannot evolve to the next level, until someone leads the way. The self-appointed leadership of the "free world" has to either lead the way or get out of the path of others who understand the path to mankind’s salvation.
The way of force must be replaced by the path of cooperation. This is not a direction that is presently coming from the United States; it is entirely an Asian phenomenon. The Western Darwinian world of domination by the strongest has brought us to the point of economic collapse and unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe. The rulers of this old order have one solution to all problems—more force, the closed fist. There is a better way.
Wherever the models of supply and governance are breaking-down, force is the immediate solution, the only solution offered. If all the people cannot be fed, then obviously (only to inhuman thinkers) there must be too many people, therefore, we must thin-out the herd of "useless eaters" (non-productive members of society). Simply helping the people in need would not be "profitable." The United States, as the leader of the developing world, must have more energy and other strategic resources available to it than the rest of the world, therefore, we are justified in moving those resources out of the Middle East and Central Asia into our hands, whatever is required to do so (taking by force).
Likewise, in domestic policies such as health care and education reform, it is "wasteful" of limited resources to supply high-dollar medical treatments to those patients whose health will never improve, or expensive educations to students who are less than "exceptional." The way of force embraces such cost-cutting ideas, depicting them as moral choices, since limited funds are not "wasted" on life-supporting treatments for the terminally ill, or on educational opportunities for mediocre students ( those should be wasted the ignorant cousins of the elite).
This is the thinking of the old order that has put us in our current dilemma. The "selfish man" having his way when he really shouldn’t, has created a real threat to all mankind. The selfish must give way to the needs of the entire community.
A new generation of selfless leaders is arising to meet the challenge posed by the dying order. Where "selfish man" cannot conceive of anything but a profit-based international order, "new man" cannot accept thinking that does not contain a human element, a compassionate direction. The old malevolent thinking is violence based, whereas new man cannot conceive of killing his fellow man. Selfless leaders of the humanity movement have great difficulty in understanding the thinking of the heartless corporate extortionists. There is a basic disconnect between the thinking of the old man and the "new man" who is rising-up amongst them. This gives the new man the advantage, if he can only take advantage of it.
This brings the situation down to where we witness a rising minority of "new men" facing-off against a persevering minority of the super-wealthy, who are perhaps even more dedicated to preserving their old selfish order of mankind, whatever the potential costs. The leadership of the rising humanitarian order is trying every reasonable means at its disposal to overturn the old order, while the leadership of the house of profit is using every means in its limitless bag of tricks to destroy the threat.
Through economic and military coercion the United States has persuaded the world into allowing it almost free rein in shaping international institutions and the ideas that are acceptable to world opinion. We have created an illusory image of ourselves which hides American war crimes and crimes against humanity behind a hypocritical mask of humanitarianism and "foreign aid."
Membership in America’s club requires a sell-out of their countrymen from the leaders of the nations that are seeking our "aid packages" or entrance into our economic system. The sell-out is to embrace our manufactured image, blinding themselves to the reality that our leaders create. The real image of America, one of double-dealings and secret wars, is hidden from the world by common consent. The pay-off for these leaders is the personal fortunes that each of them has acquired and gained notoriety for in their home countries.
By letting Americans determine which words and opinions are "politically correct" in acceptable discussion in the media, crimes are hidden and false realities become the foundation of public debate. In this way, internal debate bends to accommodate the false American reality. This American power to simultaneously bully and seduce their way in the world, extending into the basic rights of the Nations involved, has allowed our inept leaders to force upon the world the situation we face today. Further bullying and super-scheming by Obama and Brzezinski will not achieve American objectives of total power. Another way must be found.
It is only a matter of time before America is taken out of the world’s way. It is inevitable that the world will embrace the way of international cooperation, over the American way of secret and open conquests. The only alternative to a world centered on meeting its own needs is the present course we are trapped on, one wherein the victor claims all the spoils of war. That world cannot be attained within our technological environment (do the math). Nature will continue, either with us, or in spite of us.
The world needs a life-changing moment, one that will force all thinking humans to make life-changing decisions, so that we can all emerge from it as a different people, new men and women.
Everything is now black and white, not black or white as it should be. The way forward is for each of us to begin to see both sides, or all sides, of contentious issues. Life has conditioned us to divide everything new into categories, based on determinants of fear, greed, or other motivators. We have to understand that these are the motivators of children, or animals, not adult human beings. There are so many simple solutions to be found by those without blinders, with two eyes to see.
The world will solve its problems and go on, as long as we don’t prevent that from happening. The question of whether we will continue to seek to force the world to accept American domination, or if we will learn to play well with others, will determine whether or not we are accepted into the new order that is now emerging in Asia and beyond.
The energy supplies and other natural resources that are being fought over will be moved to markets, no matter what. Fighting to claim them, or to keep others from obtaining them, is a backwards policy, meant to enrich the few at the sake of the many. All of this will change.
Whether or not this Nation will be part of the new world alliance is a question that each of us must answer. Will we passively allow the United States to perish from the face of the earth or develop into the full-blown pariah nation that have been becoming, that we will deserve for impeding the advancement of the human race, or will we stop the madness and deception by altering our leaders’ commitment to their present path? Or, will we interfere with their petty plans?
Barack Obama has a very clear choice to make, whether he is going to be remembered as humanity’s emancipator from war or as history’s last tyrant? Obama has to decide what means more to him, pursuing a path that will engender hope in the entire human race, or pursuing his own ambition. Will he take a stand for freedom and human decency by ending all of our wars right now with the stroke of a pen, or will he continue to drag us down the path of total war in Central Asia, the path that we were bound to by the former tyrants, Bush and Cheney?

The fact notorious illegal loggers Samling of Malaysia; who have devastated rainforests globally including those of the Penan, are surreptitiously in contention for Liberian logging contracts illustrates, despite decades of failed reform efforts locally and internationally, that the global industrial tropical timber logging industry remains irredeemably corrupt. There is no evidence first time industrial logging of primary forests is ever ecologically sustainable or reduces poverty. Australia Plans Airstrikes to Kill 650K Camels in Outback

Written by Derek Markham

Published on August 12th, 20091 CommentPosted in Nature & Conservation
Australia’s wild camel population is out of control. An estimated 1 million roam the outback, destroying fragile ecosystems, fouling water holes, and causing a threat to endangered wildlife.

They are Australia’s largest invasive species, and the government is spending $19 million AUD to deal with the excess population of desert dwellers. The country’s solution? Slaughter them from helicopters and serve them up as camel burgers, camel pies, camel sausages, camel steaks, and camel mince.

First brought to Australia by explorers in the 1840s from India and the Middle East, the feral camels are now capable of doubling their population every nine years. The one million camels cause intense competition with livestock for forage, and have been known to wreak havoc on water pipes and bathrooms in their search for water.

Environmentalists generally agree with the culling of the animals to help preserve native species, and point out that lean camel meat is healthier than beef or lamb and a good source of low cholesterol protein. However, animal rights groups say that birth control for the animals would be more humane than wholesale slaughter.

Those opposing the plan claim that with the camel population due to double in a decade, the culling would not be effective.

“What happens in 15 years when the numbers come back again? Do we waste another £9.5m.” - Paddy McHugh, camel catcher and exporter

News of the culling brought some namecalling from the press, with Erin Burnett, an anchor on CNBC, calling Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd “a serial killer”.

“He has launched air strikes - air strikes - against camels in the outback.” - Burnett

Burnett later said the comment was a joke, and invited Rudd to be a guest on her show.

Tell Greenpeace: Consuming Toilet Paper Made from Canada's Ancient Boreal Forests Must End

By Ecological Internet's Forest Protection Portal
http://forests.org/

Greenpeace Canada claims Canadian boreal forest victory while falsely stating clearfelling old forests for paper products is "sustainable" when FSC certified. These photogenic poseurs fail to grasp the ecological necessity of ending consumption of all products made from old forest destruction, and generally reducing consumption of all paper products. Nothing to change as old boreal forests and toxic plantation monocrops will continue to be clearcut to wipe bottoms. Please demand that Greenpeace repudiate the agreement with Kimberly-Clark and not enter into any further negotiations that greenwashes old forest logging. Let Greenpeace know global ecological sustainability -- including climate, water and biodiversity -- depends upon protecting primary forests and restoring others to old growth status.
