Pediatric Spay/Neuter

Spay/Neuter of Shelter Animals
Pediatric Spay/Neuter
Facts About this Safe and Effective Procedure
Pediatric spay/neuter is the subject of ongoing debates among veterinarians
that is fraught with misinformation, misconceptions and high emotions.
Although millions of domesticated animals have been surgically sterilized,
many veterinarians believe sufficient conclusive research has not been
conducted to determine the best age or reproductive stage of life to spay
and neuter dogs and cats.
However, studies have been conducted that show that pediatric spay/neuter is
safe and effective in both the short and long term. This information can
help allay many of the veterinarian's fears so they may embrace the concept
as readily as they embrace neutering at 6 months of age.

Early Age Spay/Neuter Defined
The harshest criticism by veterinarians of early age neutering is usually
reserved for surgeries performed on animals as young as 6-8 weeks of age or
under 2 pounds of body weight. But early age spay/neuter should be broadly
defined as surgical sterilization procedures performed on animals who are
6-16 weeks of age or under the traditional age of 6 months. Using that
definition, surgery performed on a 4-month old female animal would be
considered a pediatric spay.
Because the term "early" implies that the procedure is being performed
prematurely, some veterinarians proposed that alternative language might be
more acceptable. Some alternative terms for early age spay/neuter include:
* Juvenile spay/neuter
* Pediatric spay/neuter
* Prepuberal spay/neuter
* Prepubertal spay/neuter
* Prepubescent spay/neuter
History of Spaying and Neutering
Many veterinarians are not aware of the different theories that have been
advanced regarding the timing of spaying a female cat or dog. Both
veterinarians and the general public might be surprised to know that in the
early 1900s, veterinarians advocated spaying bitches between 3 and 6 months
of age, or even prior to weaning, and castration was done as early as 4
weeks of age. At one time it was believed that it was beneficial for animals
to have a litter before being spayed, while another prevailing school of
thought, until fairly recently, was that animals should go through one heat
before being spayed.
Many veterinary colleges are currently teaching that spaying and neutering,
also known as gonadectomy, can be done safely at any age, but believe that
pediatric spay/neuter is a tool mainly for population control for shelter
animals only. However, pediatric spay/neuter should be considered for
animals belonging to the general public as well.
Revisiting the Six-Month Recommendation
Six months of age is generally considered to be the standard recommendation
for spaying and neutering puppies and kittens. It is unclear from the
scientific literature how that conclusion was reached.
It is now known that spaying an animal before the first heat prevents the
development of mammary gland tumors later in life. Since kittens may go into
heat at 4 months of age, waiting until 6 months risks accidental pregnancy
and loses the protection against mammary gland cancer.
It would appear that decisions about when to spay and neuter are based more
on the individual practitioner's comfort level and familiarity with the
surgical technique and anesthesia rather than on any sound scientific or
medical evidence.
The six month age requirement for surgery came into question in the late
1970s when shelters encountered difficulty getting adopters to comply with
contractual agreements to neuter their newly adopted pets. Despite various
incentives, many adopters simply refused to abide by the agreements once
they had acquired the animals.
Some shelters found that litters from animals they had adopted out were
being brought back to them, and that they were thus actually contributing to
the overpopulation problem. They decided the best solution would be to
neuter the animals before they were adopted, but the six month age
restriction meant that puppies and kittens could not be altered.
Once it was determined that no compelling medical reason could be found in
the veterinary literature to wait until the animals were six months of age,
pediatric surgeries began to be performed. Dr. Leo Lieberman is the
acknowledged pioneer of pediatric spay/neuter. He began performing the
surgeries in the late 1970s, and they have been performed by shelters ever
since.
A Growing Body of Evidence
In 1993 Faggella and Aronsohn published surgical and anesthetic protocols in
the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) for
safely neutering animals as young as 6 weeks of age. Although the surgeries
had already been performed safely on thousands of shelter animals, these
articles provided the much-needed research data to prove that the procedures
were indeed safe to perform.
On July 18, 1993, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) House
of Delegates approved a resolution on early age spay/neuter which stated:
"Resolved that the AVMA supports the concept of early (8-16 weeks of age)
ovariohysterectomies/ gonadectomies in dogs and cats, in an effort to stem
the overpopulation problem in these species."
Aware of the controversy surrounding this statement they also added:
"The concept is for the benefit of animal shelter and humane society
spay/neuter programs. Individual veterinarians have the right/responsibility
to decide at what age they will perform the procedure."
In 2004, the policy was revised and the "concept" portion of the statement
was removed.
Throughout the 1990s, groups such as the American Animal Hospital
Association (AAHA), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (ASPCA), American Humane Association (AHA), Cat Fanciers Association
(CFA), American Kennel Club (AKC), Humane Society of the United States
(HSUS), and the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) endorsed
pediatric spay/neuter.
Despite these endorsements and the body of evidence already gathered through
research and anecdotal information from over 25 years of performing
pediatric procedures, the debate still goes on. This information should help
resolve some of the problems and concerns.
Concerns about Pediatric Spay/Neuter
An often-cited concern regarding pediatric spay/neuter is a lack of
sufficient scientific data regarding long-term consequences. The following
are commonly discussed issues:
* Obesity
* Stunted growth
* Cranial cruciate ligament rupture
* Hip dysplasia
* Behavioral problems
* Lower urinary tract disease
* Secondary sex characteristics
* Urinary incontinence
* Infectious disease
* Hypothyroidism
* Diabetes mellitus
* Neoplasia
General Concerns about the Long-Term Effects
The results of studies of the long-term outcome of gonadectomies performed
at an early age or traditional age in cats and dogs were published in JAVMA
in the December 1, 2000 and January 15, 2001 issues, respectively. The
studies were performed at the Texas A&M Veterinary College by Dr. Lisa Howe
on 269 dogs and 263 cats from animal shelters.
The conclusion for dogs was that "with the exception of infectious diseases,
prepubertal gonadectomy may be safely performed in dogs without concern for
increased incidence of physical or behavioral problems during at least a
4-year period after gonadectomy."
Shelters that held puppies long-term encountered problems with parvovirus.
However, the authors of this paper did not conclude that prepubertal
gonadectomy caused parvovirus. The puppies in the study were at an age where
they were susceptible to parvovirus and housed in a shelter environment
where parvovirus can be common; they developed parvovirus for these reasons,
and not because they were sterilized as pediatric patients. (Studies have
also shown that, unrelated to surgery, the longer animals are held in
shelters, the more likely they are to become ill. Shelters that held puppies
short-term did not encounter similar disease problems.)
The conclusion for cats was that "prepubertal gonadectomy may be performed
safely in cats without concern for increased incidence of physical or
behavioral problems for at least a 3-year period after gonadectomy."
Another study addressing the long-term effects of pediatric spay/neuter was
published in JAVMA in the February 1, 2004 issue. This study was performed
at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine by Dr. Vic Spain,
who looked at the records of shelter animals (1,842 dogs and 1,660 cats) who
were sterilized as pediatric patients. This study provided follow-up for as
long as 11 years.
The conclusion for dogs was that "because early-age gonadectomy appears to
offer more benefits than risks for male dogs, animal shelters can safely
gonadectomize male dogs at a young age and veterinary practitioners should
consider recommending routine gonadectomy for client-owned male dogs before
the traditional age of 6 to 8 months. For female dogs, however, increased
urinary incontinence suggests that delaying gonadectomy until at least 3
months of age may be beneficial." It is important to note that the female
dogs with reported urinary incontinence remained in their homes and were not
relinquished to the shelter. The long-term Texas A&M study did not find
similar results about urinary incontinence, and another study from 1992
showed a higher incidence of urinary incontinence in female dogs spayed
AFTER the first estrus cycle.
The conclusion for cats from the Cornell study was that "Gonadectomy before
5.5 months of age was not associated with increased rates of death or
relinquishment or occurrence of any serious medical or behavioral condition
and may provide certain important long-term benefits, especially for male
cats. Animal shelters can safely gonadectomize cats at a young age and
veterinarians should consider recommending routine gonadectomy for
client-owned cats before the traditional age of 6 to 8 months."
It should be noted that similar focused studies have not been conducted to
establish the long-term safety of gonadectomies performed at 6 months of
age.
Obesity
Obesity is influenced by a number of factors, and while neutered animals do
have a tendency to weigh more than intact animals, it occurs regardless of
whether the surgery was performed prepubertally or at the conventional age
of six months. A published study in 1991 indicated that dogs did not develop
obesity when they were sterilized at either pre or post puberty. Another
study from 1996 showed that cats can gain weight after gonadectomy, but this
is for both gonadectomy at the traditional age as well as prepubertal.
It should be stressed again that obesity is a multi-factorial problem. Even
an intact animal can become obese if a proper diet and exercise regimen is
not followed. Just as in humans, dietary indiscretions and lack of activity
are the real culprits in this case.
Growth
Many veterinarians erroneously believe that pediatric spay/neuter will stunt
the growth of animals. In fact, the exact opposite is true. This concern
about stunted growth following prepubertal gonadectomy has been refuted by
multiple studies.
In contrast to intact dogs, pups spayed or neutered at 7 weeks of age and
male pups neutered at 7 months of age had greater final radius and ulna
lengths. The removal of hormonal influences on the growth plates of the long
bones results in delayed closure, resulting in bones that are actually a
little longer. However, no clinical significance to this difference in size
has been found.
In cats, although prepubertal gonadectomy had a similar effect of delayed
closure of the growth plates, this did not lead to clinically significant
differences in the final length of the long bones.
Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture
In humans, cranial cruciate rupture (CCL) is more common in women than men
and may be more likely to occur during certain phases of the menstrual
cycle, which may be due to a hormonal effect on joint stability (Root
Kustritz). Reported incidence of rupture of the CCL in dogs is 1.8%, and
this is reportedly more common in sterilized female and male dogs than in
intact dogs (Root Kustritz).
The exact cause and effect relationship has not yet been defined, but in
addition to the suspected hormonal influence, heredity, body weight, and
body condition score may all play a role in CCL rupture (Root Kustritz).
There have not been any studies that have shown that delayed closure of the
growth plates of the long bones results in asynchrony and/or abnormalities
in joint formation as a cause of CCL rupture in dogs.
Hip Dysplasia
Long term studies have looked at the incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs and
the association of hip dysplasia with pediatric spay/neuter (Howe, personal
communication). The reported incidence of hip dysplasia is 1.7% with an
increased incidence in large and giant-breed dogs (Root Kustritz). In the
long term Cornell study, puppies that underwent pediatric spay/neuter before
5.5 months of age had an increased incidence of hip dysplasia. However, an
additional finding of this study was that dogs that were gonadectomized at
the traditional age were three times more likely to be euthanized for the
hip dysplasia as compared to the early gonadectomized group. The authors
suggest that early age gonadectomy may be associated with a less severe form
of hip dysplasia (Howe, personal communication).
Behavior
The effects of pediatric spaying and neutering on behavior remain largely
unknown. Sterilization and the subsequent decrease in related hormones have
been correlated with a decrease in gender-specific behaviors. Neutering at
any age reduces the urge of male animals to spray urine to mark territory,
roam and fight with other male animals. The demonstration of sexual
behaviors in male cats can make them undesirable house pets, and a decrease
in such behaviors is a powerful benefit of having them neutered. Also, the
trainability of working dogs is not altered by gonadectomy and does not vary
with age of the dog at time of surgery (Root Kustritz).
The large Cornell study of dogs sterilized before 5.5 months of age
indicates an increase in noise phobias and sexual behaviors and a decrease
in escaping, separation anxiety, and urination in the house when frightened
(Spain, Scarlett, Houpt, 2004). However, a different study showed no
difference in the incidence of overall or specific behavioral problems
between early-age and traditional-age sterilization (Howe, 2001).
There is some early evidence that animals that are gonadectomized at 7 weeks
or 7 months of age are more active and excitable, and that male and female
cats may be more affectionate than those left intact, but this is a fairly
subjective observation that requires more research to substantiate. There
does not appear to be any clinical significance to any observed behavioral
differences.
Lower Urinary Tract Disease
Pediatric spay/neuter has not been found to contribute to a higher rate of
urinary tract obstructions in male cats. Studies have been conducted on male
cats to determine the incidence of urinary tract obstructions in all
populations. It was found that the diameter of the penile urethra did not
vary between animals neutered at 7 weeks or 7 months of age or from intact
male cats.
It was originally believed that castrated cats had a higher incidence of
urinary tract blockages, but this is not the case. The penis in male dogs
castrated at 7 weeks of age is smaller as is the os penis, and preputial
development is juvenile in comparison with dogs castrated at 7 months of age
or left intact, but there has been no clinical significance attached to

U.S. urged to regulate 'backyard tigers'

(CNN) -- Rising numbers of captive tigers in the United States are putting
citizens at risk and could be fueling illegal trade in animal parts, which
threatens their survival in the wild, conservationists have warned.

"Tigers Among US," published by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and TRAFFIC,
the wildlife trade monitoring network estimates that there are more than
5,000 tigers in captivity in the U.S. compared with around 3,200 that
remain wild across Asia.

While some tigers are housed in zoos, many more are privately owned, often
free to roam backyards, urban apartments and are generally kept in
"deplorable conditions," the report says.

Leigh Henry, WWF senior policy officer for Species Conservation told CNN:
"We've seen photos and there's a video on our website showing tigers
walking around muddy wet cages."

But its the size of the enclosures that is most distressing, Henry says,
"when you know tigers are supposed to be ranging over hundreds and
hundreds of acres."

Current U.S. regulation on tiger ownership is "a patchwork of federal
laws" full of "exceptions, exemptions and loopholes," the report says.

A majority of U.S. states (28) don't allow citizens to keep tigers as
pets, while 17 have laws which regulate their ownership.

But in some states there are no regulations at all, making it easier to
own a tiger than to adopt a dog, with sometimes tragic consequences.

In 2003, a 10-year-old boy was killed by his aunt's pet tiger in Wilkes
County, North Carolina.

In the same year, celebrity tiger handler Roy Horn (of Siegfried and Roy
fame) was mauled during a performance at Las Vegas's Mirage Hotel.

Nevada and North Carolina are two of eight U.S. states (Alabama, Idaho,
Ohio, South Carolina West Virginia and Wisconsin are the others) which
currently have no laws regulating private ownership of tigers.

Go vegetarian to save planet, scientists tell Government

Scientists from the University of East Anglia analysed existing data
on the nutritional and environmental effects of different kinds of
foods.

Eating less beef, sugar, and cheese, as well as drinking less tea and
coffee, were recommended, as well as eating more pulses and cereals.

The report was commissioned by the Food Standards Agency to try to
change the way people cook and eat.

Other recommendations included eating more seasonal produce to reduce
transportation and switching to microwave ovens and pressure cookers
to use less energy in preparing food.

The report suggests that schools, hospitals and other public bodies
should be expected to lead a change in national behaviour by putting
food on their menus which has contributed little to greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions.

The report noted: "The highest GHG emissions are associated with beef,
cheese, coffee, tea and cocoa consumption."

The Meat Eaters

By JEFF MCMAHAN
The Stone is a forum for contemporary philosophers on issues both timely and timeless.

.
Viewed from a distance, the natural world often presents a vista of sublime, majestic placidity. Yet beneath the foliage and hidden from the distant eye, a vast, unceasing slaughter rages. Wherever there is animal life, predators are stalking, chasing, capturing, killing, and devouring their prey. Agonized suffering and violent death are ubiquitous and continuous. This hidden carnage provided one ground for the philosophical pessimism of Schopenhauer, who contended that “one simple test of the claim that the pleasure in the world outweighs the pain…is to compare the feelings of an animal that is devouring another with those of the animal being devoured.”

Theologians’ labors will not be over even if they are finally able to justify the ways of God to man. For God must answer to animals as well.
.The continuous, incalculable suffering of animals is also an important though largely neglected element in the traditional theological “problem of evil” ─ the problem of reconciling the existence of evil with the existence of a benevolent, omnipotent god. The suffering of animals is particularly challenging because it is not amenable to the familiar palliative explanations of human suffering. Animals are assumed not to have free will and thus to be unable either to choose evil or deserve to suffer it. Neither are they assumed to have immortal souls; hence there can be no expectation that they will be compensated for their suffering in a celestial afterlife. Nor do they appear to be conspicuously elevated or ennobled by the final suffering they endure in a predator’s jaws. Theologians have had enough trouble explaining to their human flocks why a loving god permits them to suffer; but their labors will not be over even if they are finally able to justify the ways of God to man. For God must answer to animals as well.

NOT IN OUR NAME: ANIMAL DEFENDERS INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR A GLOBAL STAND AGAINSTSPACE EXPERIMENTS ON ANIMALS

AND CALLS ON THE PUBLIC TO PROTEST TO THE US & RUSSIAN EMBASSIES

LONDON, Sept 24, 2010 -- Animal Defenders International (ADI), the leading animal welfare organisation that works globally for the protection of animals, has launched a major international drive to stop NASA and the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) from performing radiation experiments on monkeys as part of plans to travel to mars.

The ADI offices in Los Angeles have instigated a campaign in Congress to halt the NASA experiments and the London headquarters of ADI are co-ordinating a global drive urging people to contact the US and Russian Embassies.

The campaign has attracted the backing of astronauts, former NASA employees, and a commitment from the European Space Agency not to perform monkey experiments.

At the heart of the new campaign is a compelling 4-minute video entitled 'Space Experiments on Monkeys - One Giant Leap Backwards' which recaps the prior use of animals in space research, cites reasons NASA's irradiation experiments are flawed and premature, and presents viable alternatives to primate testing. The DVD also includes an exclusive ten-minute interview with April Evans, former NASA engineer who explains she resigned her dream job with one of the world's top space agencies because of NASA's radiation tests. Both videos are also being launched online as part of a major awareness drive.

Every member of the US Congress will receive a copy of the DVD and copies will be sent to the US and Russian Embassies around the world.

Tim Phillips, Animal Defenders International Campaign Director said, "These tests are cruel, unnecessary, premature and a waste of $1.75 US million of taxpayers' money. Our video shows that these monkey experiments have been criticised from every side, scientists, animal protectionists, astronauts, former NASA employees, and even the European Space Agency. We are not opposed to space exploration, but these experiments are cruel folly."

The video reveals the horrific nature of the monkey experiments which will include: Burns, weakness, hair loss, failing organs and nausea. It also points out that there are already a significant number of sources for data on the impacts of high doses of radiation on humans including the victims of atomic bombs, X-rays and radiotherapy, the nuclear power industry, and astronauts who have spent time in space.

Tim Phillips said: "Those in the space programme often talk in lofty terms that this is about making advances for the whole of humankind. We want the world to make it clear that this cruelty is not in our name, and there are plenty of people in the space research community who agree with us."

Cosmonaut Valentin Lebedev, who set a world record for time in space, describes the tests as "inadmissible for humane reasons" citing the wealth of data available from astronauts.

Jim Bates, NASA retired, formerly Co-Chairman of the JSC Space Radiation Environment Group (SREG) 1968-1970, has noted the decades of similar experiments on animals and said: "We have probably sacrificed enough monkeys for these data, something else is needed."

The European Space Agency's (ESA) Director Jean-Jacques Dordain stated that he and ESA categorically opposed and "declines any interest in monkey research and does not consider any need or use for such results." The statement confirms the unnecessary character of NASA's tests and reveals the uneasiness of a large segment of the scientific community involved in space research about the use of monkeys in experiments.

Tim Phillips said: "These experiments are wrong every way that you look at them. There is a wealth of data available and alternatives which include cell and tissue culture study, the simulated human torso in space, and the use of scanning techniques to examine neurological function in patients undergoing partial brain radiotherapy. Even if you ignore all of this, NASA does not yet have the shielding technology to protect the astronauts on such a mission, and this would determine any type radiation exposure, so these tests are shamefully premature."

Aerospace engineer April Evans resigned her position earlier this year as a space architect on the International Space Station (ISS) program because of NASA's decision to conduct primate irradiation testing. Evans believes this experiment is a major step backward for NASA's animal testing record.

"After much deliberation, I resigned from NASA because I could not support the scientific justification for this monkey radiobiology experiment," Evans wrote in a letter to Samuel Aronson, director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory, which was contracted by NASA to conduct the tests on squirrel monkeys.

"NASA needs to focus on developing space radiation shielding because both astronauts and hardware are at risk from the space radiation environment, an issue that will have to be addressed by all space agencies. Space vehicle radiation shielding is necessary technology for a sustainable long-term human space exploration program and scientists and engineers should be given the chance and time to advance shielding technology."

For more information on the campaign, visit: www.ad-international.org/NASA where you can view and download the videos and join in the fight to stop NASA's planned experiments.

Please address polite letters to NASA requesting that they reconsider financing such horrific experiments by writing to NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr, Public Communications Office, NASA Headquarters, Suite 5K39,Washington, DC, 20546-0001

Please write to the US Ambassador saying you oppose the NASA experiments: Mr Louis B. Susman, US Embassy, 24 Grosvenor Square, London, W1A 1AE.

Note to the editors
The White House statement on radiation shielding President Barack Obama declared in April 15, 2010: "after decades of neglect, we will increase investment -- right away -- in other groundbreaking technologies that will allow astronauts to reach space sooner and more often, to travel farther and faster for less cost, and to live and work in space for longer periods of time more safely. That means tackling major scientific and technological challenges. How do we shield astronauts from radiation on longer missions? How do we harness resources on distant worlds? How do we supply spacecraft with energy needed for these far-reaching journeys? These are questions that we can answer and will answer."

ONTARIO VETERINARY COLLEGE ENDS INDEFENSIBLE KILLING OF HEALTHY DOGS

HALIFAX (SEPTEMBER 22, 2010) Effective this academic year, the Ontario
Veterinary College (OVC) will end the training of students through terminal
surgeries which have taken the lives of hundreds of healthy dogs. The
termination of these animal experiments, and their replacement by models,
cadavers and supervised clinical learning opportunities with shelter
animals, was announced September 10, 2010 on the OVC website following a
sustained campaign. The process of change began in 2009 with a friendly
beagle, Rainbow, who was one of the OVC dogs whose fate was to be killed
after surgical practice. Dr. Anya Yushchenko, InterNICHE National Contact
Assistant and then veterinary student at OVC, conscientiously objected by
refusing to participate in the killing of an otherwise healthy dog. With the
help of Dr. Olivier Berreville, InterNICHE National Contact for Canada, and
lawyer Nick Wright, Dr. Yushchenko fought for her right to a veterinary
education free of harmful animal use. In the process, Dr. Yushchenko was
able to save Rainbow¹s life, and placed her in a loving home. Following this
achievement, a collaborative effort between InterNICHE and Animal Alliance
led this year to the rescue of several other dogs, and the subsequent
decision by OVC to eliminate terminal surgeries. ³We congratulate the
Ontario Veterinary College and Guelph University for stopping outdated,
cruel terminal surgeries and for choosing to join the increasing number of
universities and colleges worldwide that now use modern, ethical methods to
teach their students², says Berreville. ³We will strive to provide any help
needed by the OVC to ensure that the new curriculum and methods used are
fully ethical.² InterNICHE provides a range of resources to support the
implementation of humane alternative methods and replace the harmful use of
animals in education. These include the book and database of alternative
methods Œfrom Guinea Pig to Computer Mouse¹ (2nd ed.); a number of
Alternative Loan Systems (libraries) for free access to humane learning
tools; and a Humane Education Award grant program to help fund progressive
curricular transformation.

Subject: Meet The Prince of Flesh, Australian horse flesh purveyor

To Whom It Concerns,

After learning of the decision to allow the human consumption of horse flesh to be legalised in Australia, I ask that this decision be overturned at once, and that the slaughter of horses for human consumption be stopped immediately.

The issue of slaughtering horses for domestic consumption has of course sparked up much controversy from animal lovers in Australia and around the world, and for good reason. The Australian public finds the killing of Australian horses for their meat to be abhorrent. This is why horse meat has never been available before now.

The slaughter of horses for human consumption in Australia will open up another world of welfare concerns for West Australia, a State in which the current government has already reduced its Animal Welfare Inspectorate from 6 to 1. So who is going to be monitoring the welfare of horses that are slaughtered?

The WA Government is already in a position where it is unable to monitor the welfare of any farmed animal used for meat. So the question must be asked, who will control and measure the process of killing horses for human consumption in Australia? Who shall ensure that animal welfare guidelines are met from backyard to slaughter?

Slaughterhouses in WA do not have the appropriate facilities for horse slaughter nor have the slaughtermen involved been trained in horse handling and slaughter processing.

Does Australia need to add horses to our plate? There is already a long list of animals that are exploited for their meat, and to add horses to this list for Australian consumption is immoral.

One of the major suppliers of horses for human consumption is the racing industry which breeds approx 30,000 horses each year. Approx 70% of these horses are simply not "good enough" and will be discarded without running a single race.

If Western Australia is to please minority groups; those Europeans who have a taste for horse flesh, will WA take the next step and cater for Asian cultures? Will the WA Government permit the slaughter of cats and dogs for their flesh? What is the difference between eating one pet and eating another? Horses are of course pets to many Australians.

Furthermore, you are all well aware of the toxicity of horse meat, poisoned with phenylbutazone, a banned substance in accordance with the Health of Animals Act and the Meat Inspection Act as described via other country parameters. Tainting the food supply with such toxins is not only negligent, but it is also immoral. It is also important to recognize that European markets are increasingly rejecting horse meat from Western countries where horses are routinely treated with such prohibited substances, and Australia will be a known target of such disapproval as well.

You have an opportunity to honor the wishes of the Australian people, to represent Australia's wishes with integrity, and to undertake the effort to protect rather than harm. It is time to refuse participation in the bloody trade of horse slaughter and I respectfully ask that you do so immediately.

I urge you to discontinue your contribution to the heinous and inhumane business of horse slaughter.

I thank you for your attention and consideration.

Subject: Horse Slaughter Demo in Montreal - Don't forget!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
Stand up for horses.
Imagine the terror of being shipped off to a slaughterhouse, stabbed by electric prods, forced into a chute and then a bullet through your brain. Many horses have been shot 3-4 times, sometimes getting strung up and bled alive. That is the thanks horses receive after they have done so much for humans throughout history. They are used for pleasure, performance, circuses, animal testing, farming, family pets, fighting wars and PMU factory farms (PMU - pregnant mare's urine, used to make hormone replacement drugs for women). Still, our society says it is acceptable for them to be slaughtered and their carcasses eaten by humans!!
Please join us at this important protest on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 3pm. See attached document.
Please circulate this message.
Thank you.
Arrive early to find parking.
NON à l'abattage de chevaux AU CANADA!
Venez-vous joindre à nous pour une manifestation pacifique contre l'abattage de chevaux.
Démontrez aux Québécois et au reste du Canada qu'il y a des gens pour lesquels cette cause est importante.
Quand - 22 août 2010 à 15:00 h.
Où - Le Vieux-Port de Montréal, au coin de la Place Jacques Cartier et de la rue de la Commune est (côté sud de la rue près des calèches de chevaux)
Il serait très utile si vous pouvez apporter une affiche bilingue (si possible) pour protester contre l'abattage de chevaux au Canada. (SVP soyez courtois)
Assurez-vous d'arriver tôt afin de trouver un stationnement.
Protestons pour les chevaux
Imaginez la terreur que vivent ces chevaux envoyés à l'abattoir, frappés avec des bâtons électriques, forcés d'entrer dans des corridors étroits pour ensuite recevoir une balle au cerveau. Plusieurs chevaux ont dû être tirés 3-4 fois, ou simplement suspendus et saignés à mort.
C'est le remerciement que ces chevaux reçoivent après avoir tant fait pour les humains. Ils sont utilisés pour le plaisir, la performance, les cirques, les tests de labo, l'agriculture, comme animal de compagnie, dans les combats et sur les fermes PMU pour la fabrication des hormones (PMU - pregnant mare's urine, ou on garde les femelles toujours enceintes pour récolter leur urine qui sert aux hormones de remplacement pour les femmes).
Quand même, notre société trouve que c'est acceptable de les abattre et que leur carcasse soit mangée par des humains !!
S.v.p. joignez vous à nous pour cette importante protestation Dimanche, le 22 août 2010 à 15 hrs. Voir document attaché pour plus de détails.
Scotland: 'Exotic meat' in the City
Hi
Last saturday Scotland for Animals held one of our regular information stalls this time at the Merchant City Festival in Glasgow.
Despite organising officials and security first trying for some time to evict us from a public street and then attempting to get two passing police officers to arrest us for refusing to move the day was a resounding success with Glaswegians and visitors from all over the globe coming over to show their support for animals and have their photos taken with Bella.
Later in the day as we were leaving a member of the public approached us saying that a barbecue stall was set up just along the road that was claiming to sell Zebra meat.
The pitch was packing up as we went to have a look but on asking around we discovered it belonged to Khublai Khan's restaurant in the Merchant City.
Looking into this we've found khublai Khan's bragging on their website that they can provide:
"Your choice of meats or seafood including such novelties as venison, wild boar, crocodile, ostrich, springbok, zebra, kangaroo and shark" as well as "more mundane meats".
The restaurant claim that they are "Faithfully re-creating the style of cooking favoured by marauding 13th century Mongolian warriors". Aye right you are.
Scotland for Animals have submitted a complaint to Glasgow City Council regarding the sources of this meat and they are now investigating.
In the meantime you can contact Khublai Khan's with your complaints here:
SfA accept that there's realistically no moral difference in killing a zebra or a crocodile for meat than a pig or a chicken. There's more than enough suffering going on with the animals humans farm and slaughter already without people like this trying to expand the market to take in even more species.
All the best
John
P.s: This saturday's (31st) stall will be at the Shawlands Arcade from 1pm. Take a run along.
Please write to NZ about kosher slaughter
Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2010 18:37:04 +1000
From: StopTAC
To: StopTAC
Whilst it is not our intention to promote the slaughter of animals, pre-stunning is infinitely less cruel than kosher slaughter. Please take the time to read the article below and send this letter:
New Zealand Agriculture Minister David Carter has taken a strong stand against non stun slaughter methods. It was David Carter himself who went against the advice of his advisors and implemented the NZ ban on this type of slaughter in May.
This NZ animal welfare code requires all animals to be stunned before commercial slaughter. That goes against the shechita, or kosher slaughter, requirement allowed under previous animal welfare rules, which involves the animal's throat being slit without stunning.
Wellington Jewish Council chairman David Zwartz says the ban means meat processed according to Jewish religious laws now has to be imported from Australia and that lawyers are preparing a case to have the slaughter restriction reversed!
Clearly NZ Minister David Carter is under a lot of pressure to remove his decision, the outcome of which could set a precedent to other agricultural ministers around the world and impact on efforts to have stunning more broadly accepted in the Middle East or other countries that practice this cruel method. We could not send a more dreadful message to regions that desperately need to be awakened to the need for change!
I am aware that Australian agricultural ministers are preparing for a meeting in November to discuss the future of this kind of ritual slaughter in Aus.
There is not as yet any information about the proposed court case, in the meantime we can write to the minister of agriculture, David Carter asking him to continue to support the ban on this practice in New Zealand. He needs our support to stick to his guns!!
You can e-mail him on d.carter@ministers.govt.nz
Please let us know if you get a response or any more information related to this case!
Animals feel the pain of religious slaughter article:
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17972-animals-feel-the-pain-of-religious-slaughter.html
Sample Letter:
Dear Minister,
The New Zealand Jewish community is preparing a legal case to challenge a ban on the kosher slaughter of animals.
As an Australian citizen strongly opposed to the allowance of non stun slaughter, I am writing in support of your stance and ban against these practices in NZ. Slaughter without stunning is appalling and totally unacceptable. In Australia we have lowered the bar on what is acceptable in civilised society to appease these extreme religious views and I find it a disgrace. I am hoping you will not weaken your resolve to stay strong on this issue. I feel that the outcome of the proposed challenge to the ban could set a strong precedent to regions around the world which are in desperate need of awakening and change. In Australia, agricultural ministers have planned to meet in November to discuss the future of this cruel practice. They are under pressure to withdraw exemptions for the slaughter of animals without prior stunning to meet export markets and domestic consumption.
Slaughter without stunning is significantly more prolonged, painful and is a terrifying death; it is permitted animal cruelty and in direct contradiction to animal welfare standards for humane slaughter. To deny the very animals that sustain us even the small amount of relief that stunning gives before the moment of death is truly indefensible! Exemptions to humane slaughter have been kept secret from the Australian public. I believe if more people were aware of this fact they would be up in arms! Our laws have been broken in the name of religion. We should have laws that everybody must adhere to regardless of religion. What happens if some other religion now says that it wants to conduct animal sacrifice, etc - how can one religion be exempted from the laws of the land but not another? The same laws should apply equally to all citizens and those laws should be evidence-based and adhere to the highest ethical standards.
Non stun Kosher and Halal slaughter methods are cruel and barbaric anachronisms, therefore, I strongly support both you and the New Zealand government. You are entirely correct to ban these methods of slaughter. The government here in Australia should follow your good example, as should all decent and progressive governments worldwide. We should not be sending the message that animal cruelty is ok. Laws designed to protect those who cannot protect themselves - including animals - should not be granted except in the most exceptional of circumstances.
Thank you for your consideration
USDA Admits Animal Cruelty Results in Human Death
At the 14 July, 2010 House Energy and Commerce subcommittee Dr. John
Clifford, Deputy Administrator for Veterinary Services for the USDA's
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) made the
unspectacular but important admission. This opinion was joined by Dr.
Joshua Sharfstein, Principle Deputy Commissioner of the FDA. Dr. Ali
Khan, Assistant Surgeon General and the Deputy Director of the
National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases
(NCEZID), Center for Disease Control and Prevention, testified that
there is "unequivocal and compelling" evidence that the use of
antibiotics in farm animals leads to drug resistance that has an
adverse impact on public health.
...
There is a likely nexus between the productivity and efficiency
approach used by factory farmers to accelerate growth of slaughter
animals, to cram as many animals as possible into the least amount of
space, to spend as little money as possible to keep the animals in
basic survivable comfort while they are trapped in crammed confinement
to await their slaughter.
Spain's Catalonia on verge of banning bullfighting
MADRID — Bullfighting in Spain could suffer its biggest setback to
date on Wednesday when the local parliament in Catalonia votes on
whether to ban the practice in the separatist-minded northeastern
region.
The assembly is scheduled to vote on the issue on Wednesday morning
after animal rights activists campaigning under the platform "Prou!"
or "Enough!" in the Catalan language, collected 180,000 signatures in
Catalonia on a petition calling for the motion to be debated and voted
on by the assembly.
The most recent indications are that a majority of the 135 lawmakers
in the regional assembly are in favour of the motion to tighten
Catalonia's animal protection law to remove an exception for
bullfights from a ban on the killing or mistreating animals in shows.
Nylabone Warning
From a
Seattle news station investigation
Is your dog biting off more than he can
chew?
The KING 5 Investigators have learned of a troubling
pattern among one of the most popular dog chews on Seattle area store
shelves.
One of the most trusted names in dog chews is Nylabone.
For 40 years they've made some of the most popular dog chews.
But there is growing evidence that some of their product lines
- like one made from a gummy material - could be harmful, even
fatal, to your dog.
At the Renton
veterinary hospital she manages, Gail Scott has declared some chew toys
off-limits. "I gave this one - one similar to this - to my own dog,"
she said, holding up a Nylabone. Now added to her list is the Nylabone "plaque attacker," the kind that she gave to
her Doberman Sting.
"He had broken the
whole end off and it was going down this throat. But I retrieved
it quickly, and of course took it away from him," Scott said. "Had it
been swallowed, probably within days, this could have been lodged
somewhere in the intestinal tract and probably had to be retrieved
surgically."
But even surgery
couldn't save Timber. It was only
after the champion Alaskan malamute died in Virginia that a vet
discovered a chunk of plaque attacker lodged in his stomach.
In Texas, the same fate was in store for Rambo, a little
poodle.
The vet retrieved two
pieces of what appeared to be Nylabone products, after Rambo's agonizing
death. "What really got me is when
the vet told me he screamed, and then died," said Harvey Hannah,
Rambo's owner. Virginia attorney Debra Corcoran said she's uncovered
more than a hundred cases where dogs may have
been injured or killed after swallowing Nylabone products.
She blames the company's line of flexible chew toys. They're
marketed under names like Gumma-Bone and Plaque Attacker.
Some vets say they're made of an indigestible material, and
plaque attacker has a knobby surface that can lodge in the digestive
tract.
"This is a gas pocket in the stomach
outlined here," Rambo's vet said, pointing to an X-ray.
Rambo's x-ray highlights another problem. Nylabones don't show up on X-rays, so vets, like Rambo's can't
tell what's making the dog sick.
"When it
hung up - the intestine keeps moving - so it kind of knotted up like an
accordion," the vet said.
The KING 5
Investigators have obtained a half dozen letters Nylabone sent to
customers
whose dogs were injured. The company calls the cases "...most
unusual..." or an "...isolated incident..."
In a letter to KING
5, Nylabone said "...the Plaque Attacker (registered trademark) is safe
... however, all polymer dog chews, regardless of
manufacturer, can present problems when they
are inappropriate in size, or have become old and worn."
In Timber's case, Nylabone settled for an undisclosed dollar
amount the day of trial.
Attorney Debra Corcoran is now preparing
a class-action lawsuit, but some people who've lost their pets want
quicker action from Nylabone, whose products can be found in pet shops
just about anywhere.
"Take it off the market - or at least change
your packaging and put on warning labels," asked Harvey Hannah, Rambo's
owner.
Late this week - that's exactly what's happened. Nylabone
sent KING 5 this letter saying that
after ten years on store shelves it's pulling the Plaque Attacker.
The
company says it will replace Plaque Attacker with "...a new, improved
product shortly."
But it won't say how soon
- or exactly what changes will be made. We'll be watching for it - and
we'll let you know how it compares.
The following is the text of
the letter sent by Nylabone to the KING5
Investigators:
Nylabone
products, a division of T.F.H. Publications, announced that it is
replacing its Plaque Attacker line of dental dog bones.
"When used properly, the ASPCA approved Plaque Attacker Bones are a
safe and effective aide in reducing problems associated with periodontal
disease in dogs," said Glen Axelrod, President and C.E.O. of T.F.H.
Publications. "However, all polyurethane dental dog bones, regardless of
manufacturer, can present problems when they are inappropriate in size,
and have become old
and worn."
The Plaque Attacker line of dental dog bones included
the four sizes of Dental Bones made from polyurethane plastic which
were introduced in the early 1990's. The produce is designed to massage a
dog's teeth and gums through specially designed dental tips on a
traditional dog bone shape to prevent canine periodontal disease. When improperly monitored during use, the bones can become
frayed and worn, with the possibility of large pieces being bitten off
and becoming lodged in a dog's intestinal tract.
"We are highly committed to pet safety and, while a typical
small piece of the product will normally pass through a dog harmlessly,
we take any amount of customer concern seriously. As such, we are
discontinuing and removing all four sizes of our Bones in the Plaque
Attacker line from stores and will introduce a new, improved product
shortly. We will continue to work very closely with
our veterinarian experts and the ASPCA to define, circulate and publish
guidelines for the proper use of polyurethane dental pet products
industry wide," said Axelrod.
Nylabone Products, a division of
T.F.H. Publications, is a leading manufacturer of premium dog chews and
dental devices. Since their introduction in 1955, Nylabone dog chews
have grown to be the most recognized dog chew among veterinarians,
clinics and kennels. Nylabone Products carry the ASPCA seal of
approval.
Pet Owners, Squeezed by Oil Spill, Turn to Shelters
By LIZ ROBBINS
VIOLET, La. — The trail of oil has invaded the marshes of St. Bernard Parish, seeping into the psyche of fishermen and flowing into the overcrowded shelter at the St. Bernard Parish Animal Services where Sasha, Melodie and Benny pace their cages awaiting adoption.
Here, the outcry over the spill — barking, whimpering and mewing — amounts to little more than muted protest.
Since the BP oil disaster began, overwhelmed pet owners in coastal parishes, notably St. Bernard, and to a lesser degree, Plaquemines, have been dropping off their pets in droves. Some hand them over tearfully, others matter of factly.
“I think about how one day these animals are happy and go to sleep, and then the next day they wake up in a cage wondering, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ ” said Mary Gambill, 54, of Luling, La., who drove an hour south to St. Bernard to adopt Andrea, a yellow Lab whose ribs poked through her sickly coat.
“These aren’t just scroungy dogs on the side of the road,” Ms. Gambill said. “These are pets.”
Some owners told the shelter’s director, Beth Brewster, that they had to downsize to apartments that do not accept animals. Others said they were too busy cleaning the spill to properly care for them. Few people, however, are willing to admit that they cannot feed both family and pet.
What's Killing the Animals at Ukraine's Biggest Zoo?"
Samka the rhino looks sad. When her longtime companion, Boy theelephant, died in April, she watched over his body for an entire dayuntil it was taken away. Today, the elephant's pen sits empty. Boy isjust one of several animals at Kiev Zoo — including a camel, a bisonand a zebra — that have died in recent months, some in mysteriouscircumstances. As the city carries out an official investigation, thedeaths have prompted outrage and denial, with activists accusing thezoo of negligence and corruption and authorities pointing to ananonymous killer as the culprit. Boy's death has brought fresh attention to a scandal that has beenrunning for months. Serhiy Hryhoryev, a former zoo worker who runs asite campaigning for the rights of the zoo's animals, says the Indianelephant was underfed, kept in poor conditions and stressed byconstant changes to the staff of handlers. "By the end, you could seehis ribs," says Hryhoryev. (See the top 10 militant animals.) According to animal rights activists, the number of animals at KievZoo has almost halved in the last two years; they accuse the zoo'sauthorities of shoddy management, corruption and neglect. The claimsstretch into city hall, with critics charging city officials ofcarrying out shady schemes to privatize the land the zoo is located onin the center of the Ukrainian capital. The zoo's management deniesthe allegations, as do city officials. -- full story:http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2006074,00.html
SHARK ALERT: News Coverage of Vile Pigeon Shooter Richard Shackleton
Dear Friends,
On April 9, SHARK made an unannounced visit to the Long Beach Township
Committee meeting, to confront town attorney Richard Shackleton about
his vile and hate filled attack against two female activists outside
the infamous Philadelphia Gun Club during the February 20, 2010 pigeon
shoot. You can watch the video of what happened HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SH3mOm0nHE
The Press of Atlantic City, the major daily newspaper covering that
area, ran a story today about Mr. Shackleton's obscene behavior.
Again Mr. Shackleton admitted to and took complete ownership of his
disgusting verbal assault.
This big, tough lawyer, who illegally shoots small defenseless animals
catapulted out of boxes, and attacks women from the safety inside of
his big SUV, seems to be suddenly quite upset that SHARK took pictures
of him while he was pigeon shooting. That means we are doing our job!
Claiming that we were "harassing" him when everything we did was legal
and peaceful shows what incredible crybabies animal abusers are.
One thing for all of us to celebrate is that after over one hundred
thirty years of slaughtering pigeons at the club, our efforts have
shut those killing parties down, in spite of all their money and
political clout. It shows what a small group of determined
individuals can do.
You can go to the newspaper site and leave a comment about what you
think about Mr. Shackleton HERE:
http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/press/ocean/article_9150cfc0-4a4e-11df-8a69-001cc4c03286.html
Please contact the Mayor and two Commissioners of Long Beach Township
and let him know what you think about Mr. Shackleton's sickening words
and request his dismissal as township solicitor.
The Press of Atlantic City: Richard Shackleton says members of an
animal rights group were harassing him
By DONNA WEAVER, Staff Writer Posted: Saturday, April 17, 2010
LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP - Township Solicitor Richard Shackleton said he
has nothing to apologize for after an animal-rights group videotaped
him shooting live pigeons at a Philadelphia gun club.
In the video, which was shot by Showing Animals Respect and Kindness,
or SHARK, Shackleton curses at the two women who videotaped him taking
part in the live pigeon shoot Feb. 20 outside the gun club. The video
has been posted to the Web site YouTube.
Stuart Chaifetz, an investigator in Cherry Hill, attended the Long
Beach Township meeting April 9 to confront Shackleton and the Board of
Commissioners. He said Shackleton said the most horrible thing he
could say to a woman and then he drove away.
"This was such a horrible, hateful thing he did. I wanted to confront
him in public about it. We were going to give him a chance to
apologize or at least at some level he would be held accountable for
what he did," said Chaifetz, of Cherry Hill, Camden County.
"I'm happy to say that what I said, I meant every word of
it,"Shackleton told Chaifetz.
SHARK is an animal rights group headquartered in Geneva, Ill. The
group's president, Steve Hindi, said pigeon shoots are competitions in
which thousands of live birds are shot to win prizes. A typical three-
day contest can kill and injure as many as 15,000 birds, he said.
They're illegal in most states, but are permitted in Pennsylvania.
"These are ugly, nasty events that attract ugly, nasty people,"Hindi
said.
Shackleton said he travels to Pennsylvania to participate in the
pigeon shoots because it is the most difficult form of shotgun shooting.
According to Shackleton, SHARK members have been harassing members of
the Philadelphia Gun Club all season.
"They've accused the members of criminal conduct and took photos of us
without our permission,"Shackleton said.
Hindi said several police reports were filed against Shackleton and
other members of the club with the Bensalem Police Department but that
police have not filed any charges.
Marianne Bessey, of Lansdowne, Pa., was one of the two women standing
outside the club for about eight hours Feb. 20, videotaping members as
they left.
"At the time that Mr. Shackleton drove out, I was standing on a public
access on the side of the road closest to his truck and he yelled it
right at me. I have a very good recollection of his face,"Bessey said.
"I still have trouble with it. But on the other hand, he goes inside a
gun club and shoots innocent pigeons for fun, so it must be in
character for him to say such a vile remark," she said.
After the exchange between Shackleton and Chaifetz, township Mayor
Joseph Mancini asked if the comments had anything to do with township
business. He then suggested Chaifetz discuss the issue at Shackleton's
Ship Bottom law offices.
On Thursday, Shackleton said the matter had been turned over to his
attorneys for further review. Chaifetz said SHARK believes
Shackleton's comments violate the Pennsylvania obscenity law.
A New Jersey Bar Association representative referred a request for
comment to the state's Office of Attorney Ethics, which did not return
a telephone call.
Ed, Barbara, et al,
I appreciate your email. I will admit that it’s a bit puzzling to me that you felt it necessary to send me an “official letter” warning me that I’ll be arrested if I again set foot upon KUMC (The University of Kansas Medical Center) property. Your quartet of armed militia made that abundantly clear when they detained me for twenty minutes, questioned me, searched me, and issued me a written criminal trespass warning for the “crime” of exercising my First Amendment Rights.
I find it amusing (yet at the same time disturbing) that KUMC would have felt threatened enough by an unarmed social justice activist (who was passing out fliers that expressed objection to the enslavement, torture and murder of sentient beings) that it would resort to fascist tactics that run rough-shod over the First Amendment. Obviously you and KUMC have much to hide.
As evidenced by your refusal to allow my allies and me (or the media, whom I’ve taken the liberty to CC in this email) into your laboratories to observe and document your self-proclaimed “ethical” torture and enslavement of nonhuman primates (who think, emote and feel pain like we do), there is a great deal of depravity, cruelty and malevolence lurking beneath the facade of “ethical science” at KUMC. And you have no right to continue hiding your twisted fascination with abusing animals, as you are satiating your sadistic impulses on the public’s dime......
Uganda: Govt Plans to Export Monkeys to Russia
Zahra Abigaba and Al-Mahdi Ssenkabirwa
11 April 2010
Zahra Abigaba & Al-Mahdi SsenkabirwaPalm oil growers in Kalangala
District can now sigh with relief after it emerged that the government
was planning to export monkeys that had become a menace to Russia.
Tourism Minister Sarapio Rukundo told Sunday Monitor on Thursday that
plans were underway to issue licenses to companies that will sale them
overseas.
"We have plans to start giving out licenses to some people to export
them (monkeys) to Russia and in return the country will be getting
foreign exchange the same way we reap from local tourism," the minister
said adding, "We are going to send our team on the ground to investigate
those reports (of killing monkeys) and if we find out that it is true,
the perpetrators will be jailed."
The minister was reacting to media reports that authorities in Kalangala
had sanctioned the extermination of all monkeys to save the oil palm
fields on Bugala Islands.
The island is the second largest on Lake Victoria after Ukerewe and has
67,000 acres. Monkeys in the area help themselves on ripe palm fruits -
something that has left many farmers in the area counting hefty losses.
A successful Protest at Gurgaon
Dear friends,
The protest at Gurgaon went very well and thanks to all the good people who were in person and in spirit with us. The protest started from the office of the Municipal Commissioner, where he addressed the crowd and supported this movement. He has set a very good example for others to follow.
Then we moved on to office of the D.C. who wasnt present. Representations in writing were given to all these people, except the Commissioner of Police who REFUSED to meet the crowd or support the movement to protect and save animals. Strangely he didnt address the crowd or meet them outside his office despite many requests made by children and senior citizens present there. So to many it was apparent as to how so many cows are illegally exported right from the N.H.-8 every day without the police knowing anything about it. His office is just a km away from the highway from where 1000s of cows are taken for meat and skin to other states and countries.
The protest ended at the local district court where many lawyers also joined the rally and gave their views.
We wish that next time more people could feel their moral obligation as humans to join such events which are constant reminders to the administration that we are still alive and awake.
We all are obliged and answerable to such injustice which happens to anyone whether animals or humans.
Here are some pictures of the protest :
Citizens of Gurgaon Rise Against Atrocities on Animals
Public Demonstration Demands Action from District Administration
GURGAON, March 20th 2010 : In a historic demonstration of public sentiment against widespread and open abuse, killing, poaching and illegal trade in animals, a protest march was held by citizens of Gurgaon today. More than 200 people from different localities, activists from across NGOs, senior citizens, children and residents from diverse walks of life, marched and presented memorandums to the Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon, the District & Sessions Judge and the Police Commissioner. The march brought spontaneous support from a large number of social and animal welfare organizations, schools, village panchayats and Universities including the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the corporates in the city. Many speakers came out openly against the morally outrageous cruelties against animals and the apathetic attitude and ignorance about laws both of general masses and the police. The chief speakers were Ms. Sreerupa Mitra Chowdhury ( prominent social activist),Mr. Sikand (senior most qerwa activist),Mr. Mahendra Singh Tokas(Cow activist), Mr. Ishwar Singh Sangwan(prominent lawyer), Mr. R.S.Rathee(prominen t public figure in Gurgaon), Ms. Vidya Sangwan(social worker and animal activist), Kamal Vij(community leader in DLF),Tulika Mehra (social worker) and Varsha Sharma(Founder Princeton Animal Fan Club). These representations called upon the police to discharge its constitutional duty and implement the law ; both of which are seriously and openly compromised. While various laws (listed below) exist to protect animals, they are rarely implemented :
1.The Constitution of India, Directive Principles of State Policy, Article 51A.
2.Indian Penal Code, Section 38 (J)
3.Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (Act 59, of 1960)
4.Wildlife Protection Act (1972) Sections 9, 39, 40 (2)
5. Delhi Police Act,1978 (applicable to Gurgaon by virtue of NCR status)
6.Punjab Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act (1955) Applicable to Haryana : Sections 3, 4A,4B, 5
Most speaker were in agreement that, "Touted as 'Guru Dronacharya Ki Pavitra Nagri' on government websites' and as 'Cybercity' to MNCs, Gurgaon is witness to daily, large scale abuse, illegal slaughter and trade in animals. The massacre is in open violation not only of several sections of the law and the Constitution of India, but every acceptable norm of human behaviour. This cannot be allowed to go on".
"We hope to remind society and local regulators of the hallowed Indian tradition of respect for all life and for mother nature. Sadly, these cultural and religious values which our ancestors abided by and which are the lifeblood of Indian civilization, are being rapidly eroded" they said.
With its rich inheritance of flora and fauna, Gurgaon , is uniquely positioned. It is the duty of all citizens to ensure this "millennium city" does not descend further into corruption, crime and ignorance.
About Greyhounds For You
Greyhounds For You is a UK-based voluntary organisation dedicated to the work of rescuing and homing retired greyhounds. These are greyhounds that have finished racing, or have declined to race. Retired greyhounds make wonderful and unique pets yet often find themselves unwanted, and without a home. They rescue and rehome greyhounds in many areas, namely Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Worcestershire, Avon, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent and the Isle of Wight.
Greyhounds for You (G4U) operate very stringent homing policies with regard to placing retired greyhounds with adoptive homes. Consequently we carry out a detailed home analysis and assess potential adopters for their suitability.
Questions you are likely to be asked will focus on:
Your working hours and how many hours in one go would the new dog be left unattended for (if applicable)
Your previous or existing dog experience
Why do you no longer have your previous dog (if applicable)?
Where you live (are you within our homing area and do you live in a house or a flat, if you live in a flat on what floor?)
Do you have a private fully fenced garden?
What other pets do you have?
How old are your children?
Your ability to afford and your willingness to do routine worm and flea treatments, vaccinations, neutering (if the dog has not already been neutered) and dental costs etc.
The security of your garden is of prime imprtance and all fences and gates must be at least 6 foot high in order to adopt a greyhound. If yours are not this high, but you are prepared to raise them, then you may still apply and be accepted for adoption subject to fence work being done before adoption occurs.
All adoptions are subject to a successful homecheck and if fencing work is required the home checker will make a return visit prior to adoption taking place. This is to ensure that the fencing work has been satisfactorily completed and our greyhounds are only homed into secure and safe environments.
If you are keen to adopt you can contact us by email to homing@greyhounds4u .co.uk or telephone or text Debbie on 0787 961 5471. We will be pleased to tell you more about the adoption process.
Update: Diageo now discussing freeing deer**
We received news last night that Diageo are now discussing a plan to have the Banbeath deer handed over for rehoming possibly by the end of next week.
Above: The deer grazing at the Banbeath plant earlier in week
Les Stocker from St. Tiggywinkles who has offered to move them was contacted late yesterday evening by Micheal Alexander, head of corporate relations at Diageo stating that the firm were now prepared to negotiate the releae of the animals.
Our phone's are ringing non stop with updates but it's looking increasingly likely that the remaining deer are to be freed.
We'll keep you updated as things happen.
UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE ILLEGAL TRADE IN TIGER PARTS IN SINGAPORE
SINGAPORE, 19
March 2010– A 3-month undercover investigation by ACRES (Animal Concerns Research and
Education Society) has revealed that 59 out
of 134 jewellery and antique shops visited in Singaporeoffered
alleged tiger parts for sale. Evidence of the 59 shops
selling alleged tiger parts was recorded on video.
Approximately159 alleged tiger
claws, 303 alleged tiger teeth and 38 pieces of alleged tiger skin were found on
sale during the investigation, which was conducted from December 2009 until February 2010. Tiger parts are used for various purposes such as traditional
medicine, jewellery, lucky charms and novelties.
Singaporehas previously been recognised as playing
a role in the trade of tiger products from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, for both domestic trade and
international re-exports.1
Although all
commercial tiger trade has been banned since 1987 by CITES (Convention on the
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), whichSingaporeis a party to, there has been an
approximate 50% decrease in wild tiger populations since the
ban.
Less than a century ago, more
than 100,000 tigers roamed the world’s jungles and forests. Today, less than
3,200 remain in the wild.Three subspecies of tiger
have become extinct within the last 50years and,despite the inclusion of
Asian big cat species in Appendix I of CITES, the illegal trade in
specimens of nearly all these species has escalated and further threatens their
long-term survival in the wild.
Singaporejoined CITES in 1986 and ratified the
Convention in 1987. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority is the CITES
authority in Singapore. AVAadministers the Endangered Species
(Import and Export) Act (ESA), which lists all CITES species in its
Schedules. Under the ESA, it is an offence to import, export and re-export any CITES species
without a permit from AVA. The possession, sale, offering or exposing or advertising for sale
or displaying to the public of any illegally imported CITES specimen is also an
offence. The penalties, on conviction, are a fine of $50,000 (per species), not
exceeding an aggregate of $500,000 and/or 2 years imprisonment.
Under the Endangered
Species (Import and Export) (Prohibition of Sale) Notification, the domestic sale of tiger
specimens is prohibited. Any person who sells, offers or exposes for sale or
displays to the public any tiger parts and products, commits an offence. The
offender shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000 for each species (but
not to exceed in the aggregate $100,000) or to imprisonment for a term not
exceeding 1 year or to both.
“It is important to note that
anyone who advertises for sale any tiger parts contravenes the above Act, even if the products turn out to be not
authentic. By making a claim that
the product is from tigers, the dealer is potentially driving up the demand for
tiger parts,which directly contravenes the spirit of CITES and
the local legislation meant to enforce
CITES” said
Ms. Anbarasi Boopal, Director of ACRES Wildlife Crime Unit.
Key findings of the investigation
include:
* The demand for tiger parts and the amount of tiger parts being stocked by the shops appeared to be higher over the Chinese New Year period in this year of the tiger, as reported by a shopkeeper.
* At 52 shops, the alleged tiger parts were openly on sale.
* 28 shopkeepers mentioned that an order for more tiger parts could be placed with them, and the delivery time ranged from one week to three months or more.
* 7 shopkeepers recognised that tigers are protected animals, that it is illegal to sell tiger parts, and that tiger parts are customs-controlled items.
* The alleged tiger parts were claimed to originate from Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Lao and Cambodia.
“The
investigation findings showed the presence of an illegal trade in alleged tiger
parts in Singaporeand that
there is an immediate need for continued serious efforts to curb this illegal
trade. The investigation
findings and footage have been submitted to the AVAand we look
forward to working closely with the AVA”
said Mr. Louis Ng, Executive Director of ACRES.
“As long as there is demand, there will be
supply. Legislation alone is insufficient to bring a complete halt to the
illegal trading of endangered species and their parts. We must do more public
education and awareness so demands for them can be curbed and supply will then
terminate”
said Dr. Lim Wee
Kiak,Member
of Parliament for SembawangGRC.
· Photographs
and video footage of the investigation are available on
request.
· In 2003, ACRES, in collaboration with The New
Paper, conducted undercover investigations into the illegal trade in tiger parts
in Singapore. The
investigations revealed that alleged tiger parts, including tiger bones, tiger
paws and tiger penises, were on sale at Traditional Chinese Medicine stores in Chinatown.
· Between 2008
and 2009, ACRES received 3 tip-offs regarding the sale of alleged tiger parts in Singapore. ACRES
investigations confirmed alleged tiger parts being sold as lucky charms in all
three cases. Enforcement action by the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority
followed.
· ACRES
is a local animal protection charity and Institution of Public Character aimed
at fostering respect and compassion for all animals. It currently has more than
18,000 individuals on its supporter database.
SAVE THE DATE: World Week for Animals In Labs 2010
PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL ACTIVISTS AND EMAIL LISTS
Dear Fellow Activists,
This year Earthday will fall on Thursday April 22nd 2010. Please keep
this date free on your calendar to attend events at UCLA in honor of
World Week for Animals in Labs and Earthday. As you will see from the
SAEN post below, just recently LA labs have been cited for animal deaths
due to negligence. Make no mistake, UCLA labs are no different - they
just refuse to hand over public documents concerning animals in their
labs.
Take a day's vacation, call in sick, come at lunch time but whatever you
do please come out this one day to support our efforts to end
vivisection at UCLA.
More details coming soon.
For updates please check our websites: (www.saenonline.org
Death Toll Reaches 97 as Negligence Epidemic Spreads to LA;
Western University of Health Sciences cited in 4 Fatalities & Cover-up
Los Angeles, CA – The death toll from a "negligence epidemic"
sweeping research laboratories across the nation reached 97 here in
March, according to internal government reports, said a research
watchdog organization.
Recently obtained government reports reveal federal violations within
the Western University of Health Sciences which resulted in four
fatalities. SAEN has contacted WUHS President Phillip Pumerantz to
demand an internal investigation.
According to a December 2009/January 2010 USDA report, four animals died
at the Western University of Health Sciences (WUHS) after botched
surgeries. The scathing 4-page USDA report cites WUHS for unqualified
personnel, inadequate veterinary care, and grossly insufficient
supervision of research protocols by the Institutional Animal Care & Use
Committee. In what appears to be a cover-up, facility officials were
kept in the dark about animal deaths, illness, etc. According to the
USDA WUHS uses over 1100 animals per year.
WUHS is the 27th facility unearthed by SAEN to have killed animals
through negligence within the last 1 ¾ years. Other California
facilities involved in the negligence epidemic have included Stanford,
UCSB, and Mount San Antonio College.
Causes of death have included starvation, being boiled alive,
exsanguination, asphyxiation, poisoning, botched surgeries, severe
untreated bacterial infections, temperature extremes, exposure to bleach
solutions, lung hyperinflation, hit by car, placing living animals in
carcass freezers, failed euthanasias, and gunshot wounds.
The research facilities cited in these atrocities include: University
of Nebraska, Sanofi Pasteur (PA), Memorial Health University (GA),
Stonybrook University (NY), Bioreliance (MD), University of Kansas (KS),
Colorado State University, Brigham & Women's Hospital (Boston);
Cornell Medical School (NY), Virginia Tech, University of Washington,
Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), Stanford (CA), Joliet Junior
College (IL), Dartmouth (NH), Lovelace Research Institute (NM), Charles
River Labs (MA/NV), University of California (San Francisco & Santa
Barbara), University of Wisconsin (Madison), Sewanee (TN), University of
Connecticut, University of Minnesota, Globe University (MN), and
Vanderbilt (TN).
"How many animals have to die before the USDA takes meaningful
action against these labs," Budkie added. "As far as we know
only one of these 27 facilities has received any penalties
whatsoever."
"Judging by the USDA's lack of action in the majority of these cases,
the only infraction worthy of a fine is boiling an animal alive in a
cagewasher," added Budkie. "Apparently putting live animals in
freezers, shooting them, or allowing them to bleed to death is not
worthy of a real penalty."
The USDA inspection reports are available upon request from SAEN.
As the world falls into recession we have an amazing opportunity to
call into question the billions of dollars spent on futile animal
experiments. It is time for each and every one of us to do what we can
to bring this controversial issue back into the public eye.
