The Meat Eaters

By JEFF MCMAHAN
The Stone is a forum for contemporary philosophers on issues both timely and timeless.

.
Viewed from a distance, the natural world often presents a vista of sublime, majestic placidity. Yet beneath the foliage and hidden from the distant eye, a vast, unceasing slaughter rages. Wherever there is animal life, predators are stalking, chasing, capturing, killing, and devouring their prey. Agonized suffering and violent death are ubiquitous and continuous. This hidden carnage provided one ground for the philosophical pessimism of Schopenhauer, who contended that “one simple test of the claim that the pleasure in the world outweighs the pain…is to compare the feelings of an animal that is devouring another with those of the animal being devoured.”

Theologians’ labors will not be over even if they are finally able to justify the ways of God to man. For God must answer to animals as well.
.The continuous, incalculable suffering of animals is also an important though largely neglected element in the traditional theological “problem of evil” ─ the problem of reconciling the existence of evil with the existence of a benevolent, omnipotent god. The suffering of animals is particularly challenging because it is not amenable to the familiar palliative explanations of human suffering. Animals are assumed not to have free will and thus to be unable either to choose evil or deserve to suffer it. Neither are they assumed to have immortal souls; hence there can be no expectation that they will be compensated for their suffering in a celestial afterlife. Nor do they appear to be conspicuously elevated or ennobled by the final suffering they endure in a predator’s jaws. Theologians have had enough trouble explaining to their human flocks why a loving god permits them to suffer; but their labors will not be over even if they are finally able to justify the ways of God to man. For God must answer to animals as well.

Animal rights lobby PETA targets Rogersville monks

Published Friday December 11th, 2009

Adam Huras
Telegraph-Journal

An animal rights organization is calling for a Rogersville monastery to shut down its farming operation, alleging its practices are inhumane to animals and contrary to Catholic beliefs.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) alleges that Our Lady of Calvary Abbey, a Trappist monastery, operates a factory farm that confines hundreds of thousands of chickens to massive sheds in deplorable conditions.

PETA vice-president Bruce Friedrich said the animal rights group was alerted by Catholic members in New Brunswick to investigate the operation.

"Sadly, the abbey is treating these animals in a way that would warrant cruelty charges if they were dogs or cats rather than chickens and cows," he said. "It's a denial of God to treat God's creatures with such complete apathy for their welfare - and that is what these monks are doing."

PETA objects to the standards of all factory farm chicken operations in Canada and has had success in targeting similar practices in another monastery south of the border.

Following PETA's 2007 release of an investigation of Mepkin Abbey factory farm, the South Carolina monastery started growing mushrooms instead.

"We urge members of the Our Lady of Calvary community to follow their brothers' example and switch to an income-generating industry that does not include the use of animals," Friedrich said. "Catholic catechism, the Bible and common sense all dictate that animals are granted compassion."

Monastery Abbot Bede Stockill replied to an email from the Telegraph-Journal on Wednesday, pointing to a page on the abbey's website about its farm practices.

"Please note that we follow all government and veterinary approved methods in our farming," he wrote, also mentioning the monastery was declared "Farm of the Year" in 2008 by the New Brunswick chapter of the National Farmers Union.

"Nothing has changed in our methods since then," Stockill said.

He declined to comment on whether the monastery is looking into alternative practices and did not grant a phone interview.

Jean Eudes Chiasson, president of the New Brunswick chapter of the National Farmers Union, supported the monks' animal husbandry.

"That farm has won awards and is certainly not any different than any other chicken farm in Atlantic Canada," he said. "I think the complaint is completely unfounded and that PETA chose to target them because of who they are.

"They "¦ believe they can reach them through religion to make their point."

Chiasson said the monastery has modernized it practices with new barns and has converted from tie stalls to loose housing for its livestock. It operates a dairy farm and roughly 350 acres of pasture and crop fields, according to its website.

It also raises broilers, young chickens for roasting, and chicks until they are ready to lay eggs for another producer.

Roughly 240,000 broilers and about 60,000 chicks are also raised up to laying hen size each year. The farm also has 75 mature cows, 40 heifers and 15 calves.

Mature cows are housed in a free-stall barn year round and about 15 dry cows and 10 bred heifers have free access to pasture from June to October. Calves are housed in hutches until the age of two months.

Friedrich said PETA contacted the abbey directly in July about the farm operation.

"We had a very unsuccessful and frustrating exchange of emails," he said. "But the abbey continues to insist they are considering our request."

Friedrich admitted that the farm is within provincial and federal regulations, but that those standards are deplorable to anyone who witnesses them.

They are also contrary to Catholic beliefs.

"Anybody who spends 30 seconds thinking about it knows that chickens should not be crammed into sheds, who have been around excrement, unable to do anything that is natural to them," he said.

Slaughter ban inflammatory - judge

The Pietermaritzburg judge who must decide if the ritual killing of a
bull will go ahead in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend said that an
interdict to stop the slaughter could lead to rebellion.
...
Animal Rights Africa has taken the Zulu monarch, King Goodwill
Zwelithini, to court because it believes the killing of a bull in the
Ukweshwama harvest ceremony is cruel.

Zulus say the animal is killed quickly and painlessly by breaking its neck.

Judge Nic van der Reyden said he could not be blind to the
consequences of stopping a tradition that had been part of Zulu
culture for centuries. He said the resulting protest could be similar
to the 1976 Soweto uprising, in which black pupils rebelled against a
government order that they be taught in Afrikaans.

Egypt supermarket displays lambs ahead of holiday; offends animal rights activists

CAIRO: The sound of a baby lamb startles a few customers at an
Egyptian supermarket into a stupor. The shock of seeing a small baby
lamb fenced in a tiny three feet by three feet container angers many,
who stop and watch the small brown animal stumble to and fro, the
almost shrieking “bah, bah” coming from its young mouth. The
displaying of the animal, in such a public venue, has left many,
Egyptians and foreigners, questioning the worth of the owner’s
decision to show the small creature.
...
Yehya Abdallah, an employee who sees the congregation of frustrated
customers, believes they need to understand that these animals are
“for the purpose of eating.” He says that the idea of animal rights is
something that has been created by foreigners who don’t understand the
realities of life in Egypt.

“Animals are for food, so this is just normal and we shouldn’t get
angry over how this animal is treated,” he argues. And what about the
other lamb who died because of the conditions? “Animals die, we eat
them, so what?” The condescension being handed to Egyptians asking why
the animal is being treated this way tells a lot, says Amina Abaza,
the head the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt
(SPARE).

Bardot pleas for an end to animal slaughter

The legendary French movie star turned animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot has written to Nepal's president urging him to stop a mass animal sacrifice from going ahead next week. She has also appealed to the government of Catalonia to back a campaign to ban bullfighting in the north-eastern Spanish region.

Bardot, who quit the film world in 1973 and subsequently set up the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals has urged President Ram Baran Yadav to outlaw the sacrificial killings at the altar of Hindu goddess of power, Gadhimai, in Bara district.

In her letter, the 75-year-old Bardot called the practice "violent, cruel and inhumane".

This year, the temple authorities say 500,000 buffaloes, goats, chickens and pigeons will be sacrificed at the Gadhimai fair which is held every five years.

"I personally find it hard to imagine that your heart can withstand such cruelty, knowing that you, being the head of the country, are ultimately responsible, " said Bardot in her letter to the president.

"I have dedicated my life to protect animals and the best gift I could receive for this life-long struggle would be the announcement of the stopping of ritual sacrifice of animals."

Bardot said she wrote to the prime minister last year and never received an answer.

The authorities are again turning a deaf ear to Bardot's pleas.

There has been no response from the president's office while organisers say the mass sacrifice, which attracts Hindu devotees from across Nepal and from neighbouring India, is a centuries-old religious tradition that should be allowed to continue.

Last month, renowned Indian animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi also urged the prime minister to stop the axing of thousands of birds and animals in the cruellest conditions imaginable. But the government said it would not ban the festival for fear of hurting Hindu religious sentiments.

Bardot has also been trying to convince the Catalan government to back a campaign to ban bullfighting.

The Popular Legislative Initiative, which has gathered 180,000 signatures, calls for a change in Catalonia's animal protection law, which bans killing or mistreating animals in shows except in the case of bullfights.

It is to be examined by the regional parliament in Barcelona in mid-December and, if it passes, Catalonia would become the first region of Spain to outlaw bullfighting.

In a letter to the Catalan government, Bardot said it was "strange and paradoxical that the (Catalonian) Socialist Party (PSC) opposes direct democracy."

Bullfighting is "an incredibly sadistic spectacle" and the PSC's position is "an insult to the formidable popular campaign which has been observed in Catalonia," she said in the letter.

Last week, Bardot also wrote to the European Union urging them to institute a Vegetarian Day as a part of the battle against global warming.

"A few weeks before the Copenhagen climate summit, I would like to draw your attention to the need to question cattle-farming, whose effects on the environment are of concern," she wrote.

"If 'developed' nations were to reduce their meat consumption, there would be less famine, which kills almost six million children each year.

"Our collective duty is to act at all levels, including by promoting a vegetarian diet. A European 'Vegetarian Day' would be a strong symbol."

Bull-killing case postponed

An urgent court application to stop the Ukweshwama ritual during which men kill bulls with their bare hands was postponed to December 1 on Tuesday to allow King Goodwill Zwelithini and other respondents to file their papers.

Animal Rights Africa (ARA) went to the Pietermaritzburg High Court to stop the ritual, which is scheduled to take place on December 5 at Zwelithini's palace in Nongoma. ARA argues that the manner in which the bulls are killed is cruel.

Other respondents in the matter are the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka, the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Zweli Mkhize, and the province's MEC for Local Government, Housing and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube. - Sapa

NEPAL to hold world's largest animal sacrifice, half a million to be slaughtered

Despite protests from Animal rights groups and religious groups, Nepal will slaughter half a million animals on Nov 24th and 25th 2009 to "appease the goddess Gadhimai" during the Gadhimai festival held once every 5 years at Bariyapur in Bara district of southern Nepal.

Devotees believe that they are invoking goddess Gadhimai to liberate them from sins. But instead, the murder, violence and animal sacrifice will only jeopardize peace process in the country. Sacrifice has nothing to do with Hinduism which is the kindest, gentlest religion possible with its link to all creatures of the earth.

Tibetan Volunteers for Animals (TVA) strongly condemns this massacre. TVA does not intend to hurt the sentiments of the devotees but we believe this is an unnecessary suffering.

Billed as the world's largest animal sacrifice fair, the event is expected to attract thousands of Hindu devotees from across the country and several Indian states as well.

Photo: a man prostrating before performing sacrifice during last festival

According to estimates, nearly 500,000 animals including buffaloes, goats, ducks, roosters and pigeons would be sacrificed at the fair in the name of religion.

Hollywood actress turned animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot and animal rights activist & politician Maneka Gandhi have written to Nepalese government seeking government intervention to stop the massacre. But the government is not prepared to hurt religious sentiments by banning the practice.

Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche has requested all the centers and students to read the Golden Light Sutra and recite the Padmasambhava prayer for removing obstacles and for quick success, for the sacrifice not to happen. This needs to be done quickly as the sacrifice is happening on 24th November. You can find the Padmasambhava prayer here: http://www.fpmt.org/teachers/
zopa/advice/pdf/Padmasambava %20prayer% 20to%20clear% 20obstacles% 20feb05km. pdf

Despite all the development and progress in the world, our behavior and attitude towards fellow sentient beings has still remained primitive. It is high time we should observe our actions and realize that these mute, innocent sentient beings are more than just piece of meat or an object of sacrifice rituals. These animals are not just a subject of compassion, they need help, a voice to speak for them.

Unmoved by protests, Nepal set to host animal sacrifice fair

India’s animal rights activist and politician Maneka Gandhi’s protest
and Nepal’s ‘Budhha Boy’ Ram Bahadur Bomjan’s appeal won’t be able to
prevent the sacrifice of nearly half-a-million animals at this month’s
Gadhimai Mela in this Himalayan nation.

Billed as the world’s largest animal sacrifice fair, the event — held
every five years at Bariyapur in Bara district of southern Nepal — is
expected to attract about five million Hindus from across the country
and neighbouring India.

But despite protest from several quarters, the Nepal government has
refused to intervene in the religious custom meant to appease Goddess
Gadhimai. Instead, it has decided to provide adequate facilities for
the two-day ritual beginning November 24.
...
According to estimates, nearly 500,000 animals, including buffaloes,
goats, ducks, roosters and pigeons, would be sacrificed at the fair to
appease the goddess. Some say the number has increased because of
several Indian states banning animal sacrifice for religious purposes.

ACTION ALERT! Animals to be Sacrificed for World Cup Ceremonies

~ PLEASE CROSSPOST WIDELY ~

Your emails are urgently needed to stop the planned ritual slaughter of at least 10 animals for a traditional African "blessing" of the World Cup in June, 2010. Please use the World Cup Contact Page to demand that this atrocity be halted and replaced with a humane alternative. Withholding your tourism dollars and letting the World Cup organizers know that you will not support this event, or the South African economy, unless and until this proposal is dropped, is the most effective way to express your outrage.

SAMPLE LETTER

Sirs:

Animal sacrifices for the World Cup? Why not sacrifices of human newborns on blood altars, for good luck? One is no less morally and ethically repugnant and regressive than the other.

This display of raw, callousness toward non-humans who value their lives, as much as you do yours, has absolutely NO PLACE in 21st Century society. How many times must mankind use the disgustingly trite and empty excuse of "custom" and "tradition" to completely relegate his "civility" to the gutter; while performing acts of savagery on innocents to whom he should be offering his kindness and protection? Other species now have no one BUT man to rely on for their lives. Man has chosen to embody the most evil, predatory force on Earth; we have thoroughly ravaged this planet and non-humans have paid the ultimate price -- isn't that sacrifice enough? Must we appease our own bloodlust for the sake of a recreational event -- a primarily worthless, glorified, adolescent pastime -- just to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that our myopic viciousness and brutality, are the ruling rationale of our species?

Isn't it enough that Africa's animals have suffered mass annihilation through repeated wars, poaching, famines and droughts which pushed many over the edge to extinction and left most others teetering on the brink? They have endured sufferings and burdens beyond imagination; and while the African people have had the support of their fellow tribesmen, the animals still have few to advocate on their behalf.

This planned bloodletting is an obscenity which will turn millions of viewers AWAY from the World Cup, and bring more shame upon the human species, and South Africa, in particular. I strongly urge you to forego this African tradition and substitute a non-violent, life-affirming, peaceful cultural ceremony in its place. I will NOT support this event or your economy with my tourist dollars until this proposal has been completely dropped from consideration by World Cup organizers.

Respectfully,

State / Country

~ ANIMAL SACRIFICES PLANNED FOR 2010 WORLD CUP ~

JOHANNESBURG

(Reuters) - South African traditional leaders plan to perform ritual
animal slaughters to bless stadiums for the 2010 World Cup tournament ahead of the start of the showcase event next June, they said on Friday.

Zolani Mkiva, chairman of the Makhonya Royal Trust, a grouping responsible or coordinating cultural activities, said the tournament, the first to be held in Africa, needed to be blessed in true "African style." "We must have a cultural ceremony of some sort, where we are going to slaughter a beast (cow)," said Mkiva.

"We sacrifice the cow for this great achievement and we call on our
ancestors to bless, to grace, to ensure that all goes well. It's all
about calling for the divinity to prevail for a fantastic atmosphere."

South Africa is set to host the World Cup -- the world's most watched sports spectacle -- in less than eight months, with the tournament expected to attract about 500,000 foreign tourists.

Mkiva said the Trust has sent letters to the chief executive and chairman of the World Cup Local Organizing Committee (LOC), proposing traditional ceremonies to be performed at each of the 10 stadiums that are going to be used for the event.

The officials have yet to respond to the request.
"We believe that from the start we've got to do things in accordance with our own traditions," Mkiva said.

DAY OF ATONEMENT

Michael Vick tortured and killed dogs and went to
jail for his actions. Eric Ledbetter tortured and
blinded and killed dogs and was praised by his
Cornell University colleagues.

Today (Monday, September 28, 2009) is Yom Kippur,
a day of fasting in which Jews throughout the world
meditate and reflect upon past transgressions. For
a Jew, today's thoughts are reserved for personal
reflection and introspection.

On this day, I dedicate my column to Dr. Eric
Ledbetter of Cornell University. He and his team
of researchers injected herpes virus into the
eyes of (he calls them "naive") dogs, just to
see what would happen. The dogs went blind and
suffered severe pain in the process. Duh.
A link to his June, 2009 study:

http://tinyurl.com/ybqnapx

Should you wish to contact Dr. Heshouldknowbetter
Ledbetter:

ecl32@cornell.edu

My day of atonement fantasy for Eric would be to
inject herpes virus into his eyes. I know the
results of my study before the conclusion:

In the future, he would see no evil.

Think of what science taught us from his study.
Poke dogs in the eyes with hypodermic syringes
filled with herpes virus and they will need
seeing eye persons.

Who else should spend today atoning for past sins?
A group of Chinese scientists who inoculated tiger
pups with the AIDS virus, just to see what would
happen. A link to their May, 2009 publication:

http://tinyurl.com/ybpnvzj

These so-called people of science must sense that
their work is more than just deceptive and self-serving.
It is merciless. It is shameful. I've never before
heard of tigers with AIDS, but shall forever in the
future avoid tiger bites when I am on safari.

Can Japanese scientists atone for the worst
example of animal research?

I can never forgive the scientists who published the
most horrible of studies in the December 2002 issue of
New Scientist. Can they forgive themselves?

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993135

These Japanese researchers decapitated the heads
of 12-day-old rats, and implanted them onto the
thighs of adult rodents.

Think of the possibilities for humans! If we perform
this same technique on Americans, in the event of a
nuclear terrorist attack, we'll be able to kiss our
own asses goodbye.

One scientist, Nobufumi Kawai, at the Jichi Medical
School in Tochigi, claims that the grafted heads
could become "excellent models" for investigating
brain function in human infants.

Today I may atone for my own selfish fantasy
which involves Dr. Kawai's upper thigh and the
transplanted head of one of Michael Vick's
abused pit bulls...

Then again, I may not. Perhaps I'll just fantasize
about developing an AIDS vaccine for a group of
Chinese Nazi doctors.

On this sacred day of atonement, there is neither
penance nor expiation for the things men do to
animals.

United Poultry Concerns Activists Will Protest Cruelty to Chickens
Kapparot Chicken Swinging Ritual at Chabad Shul of Potomac, MD

Machipongo, Va. September 24, 2009 - United Poultry Concerns will stage a protest demonstration at the Chabad Shul of Potomac in the front parking lot at 11621 Seven Locks and Gainsborough Road in Potomac, Maryland. This is where a kapparot chicken swinging ritual is scheduled for Thursday, September 24 from 7PM to 8:30PM.

Kapparot (atonement) is a ritual preceding Yom Kippur in which many Orthodox Jews swing chickens around their heads while reciting a chant about transferring the punishment God would otherwise confer on them onto the birds. The chickens are then slaughtered, on or off the premises, or simply abandoned or thrown into garbage bags.

Kapparot chicken swinging defenders claim the ritual is compassionate. This claim is completely refuted by eyewitness accounts, photographs and videotapes documenting the suffering, crying birds and the callous treatment they receive at the hands of the practitioners (www.upc-online.org/kaparos) .

Kapparot practitioners typically hold the birds with their wings pulled backward. This is a painful experience and potentially injurious to the ligaments and tendons of these birds, who have already sat miserably cramped in transport crates, often for days without food or water, before being swung. The abuse of these birds is fully consistent with the fact that kapparot practitioners regard them as mere symbolic receptacles for their personal punishment.

The use of chickens in kapparot rituals is not required by the Torah or the Talmud. Most observers swing coins for charity. In recent years, a groundswell of opposition to the kapparot chicken swinging and slaughter has been growing in New York City, Los Angeles, and Jerusalem. People are sick of the animal cruelty and want it stopped.

United Poultry Concerns recently learned that a kapparot ritual was scheduled to be held at the Chabad Shul of Potomac, and we will be there to oppose it Thursday evening.

LIFE: TO ALL IT IS PRECIOUS

Please take the time to write to religious leaders asking them to help lead the way to greater compassion and a more civilized and non-violent view of our treatment of animals.

It is long past time to address the archaic religious views of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, that support self-serving, absurd traditions and a biblical interpretation of "dominion" over animals that really means "domination" ; even this educated "ethical vegetarian", persists in justifying present day treatment of animals because he apparently believes we can "use if we don't abuse"! There is a basic flaw in that argument, because it is certainly "abuse of privilege" to take an innocent life, no matter how you do it!!!!:

In the words of Jewish vegetarian Professor Richard Schwartz:

"In the Torah, humanity is given dominion over animals (Gen. 1:26), which gives us the right to use animals for legitimate needs. Animal flesh can be consumed for food; animal skins can be used for clothing. The Torah itself must be written on parchment (animal hides), as must mezuzah scrolls, and tefillin must be made out of leather.
However, dominion does not give us the right to cause indiscriminate pain and destruction. We are permitted to use animals in this way only when there is a genuine, legitimate need, and we must do so in the manner that causes the animal the least suffering. Kosher slaughtering is designed to be as fast and painless as possible, and if anything occurs that might cause pain (such as a nick in the slaughtering knife or a delay in the cutting), the flesh may not be consumed. Hunting for sport is strictly prohibited, and hunting and trapping for legitimate needs is permissible only when it is done in the least painful way possible. "

Dear animal activists and rescuers;

The following message was sent to Rabbi Saperstein to address the issue of compassion for animals within the Jewish tradition.

Please feel free to write to him with your questions and concerns: rac@urj.org

Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism

Washington, DC 20036

Dear Rabbi Saperstein,

I have chosen to write to you at this time as it is the high holy day season, culminating in Yom Kippur, a time of atonement, forgiveness and reflection. You have chosen the hebrew word for life as a symbol in your banner and rightfully so, as life is sacred and precious to all. While the Jewish tradition places a great deal of value on human life, it falls short in addressing a meaningful definition of compassion for animals.

You were recently listed in Newsweek as one of the most influential Rabbis in the USA and in the spirit of this sacred season, I am hoping that you will respond to my concerns about the view and treatment of animals in the Jewish tradition.

It is my understanding that Judaism states unequivocally that human life is more valuable than animal life and therefore allows for the harming and even slaughter of animals to meet a human need. As this view has led to unspeakable suffering for boundless numbers of animals it is of concern to those of us who work to alleviate their suffering, as we believe that in their ability to suffer and feel pain animals are equal to humans and a meaningful definition of compassion would not condone any harm.

I would also ask that you consider that there are religious traditions which state unequivocally that ALL life is sacred. This belief system has resulted in greater benefits for animals and less suffering and violence for humanity. The most notable example is Mahatma Gandhi who used the Jain principle of ahimsa, non-violence for ALL beings, to free India from servitude.

The following memo is being distributed to clergy of the monotheistic religions, in the hope that the issue of compassion for animals can be addressed in a way that is beneficial to all. As Yom Kippur approaches please consider the spiritual implications of taking a life, any life:

IN THE NAME OF GOD

Dear Religious leaders of the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic Traditions:

I am writing to you with the hope that you will reconsider the morality of religious views that sanctions the harming/killing of animals to benefit man, as such a view is inhumane. While the taking of human life is a sin in these traditions, the harming or killing of an animal is not.

The Judeo/Christian/ Islamic traditions value an animals life in relation to human need and grant permission, that is to say, sanctify the harming/killing of animals in the name of NECESSITY. This is a self-serving, semantic premise based on archaic perceptions, designed to violate animal lives, while alleging compassion. Such reasoning has been used to exploit, dominate and abuse animals for many millennia.

Fortunately for animals this is not the only religious model for teaching compassion towards animals. The following words are from the scriptures of the Jain religion of India.

"For there is nothing inaccessible for death.
All beings are fond of life, hate pain, like pleasure,
shun destruction, like life, long to live. To all life
is dear." Jain Acharanga Sutra.

These words reflect the belief that the lives of all beings are sacred and that an animal's life has intrinsic worth, measured by its value to the animal. It is called ahimsa (no-harm) and is the fundamental principle of the Jain religion of India. In this tradition harm to any living being is to be avoided, minimized whenever possible and is viewed as gratuitous, not necessary. Furthermore Jain scriptures specifically state that it is a serious impropriety to harm another living being:

"He who harms animals has not understood or renounced deeds of sin" Jain Sutra "

For those of us who, after personally observing, as well as studying the evidence in research studies, have concluded that animals are capable of suffering, of experiencing pain the position that animals may be harmed or even killed for human benefit is untenable. Many possess a full array of emotions such as joy, pleasure, fear, anger, jealousy and even greed; they teach, nurture and protect their young; some mate for life and mourn the deaths of relatives, while innumerable others provide service and companionship to mankind.

Many of us have left our birth religions, because we have found the tolerance and teaching of acceptable harm to animals intolerable, We view the preaching of compassion, mercy and forgiveness by our religious leaders as disingenuous, since it does not include the suffering of all sentient creatures. We observe that while they recite lovely words, they also sanctify and endorse violence to animals in the name of Religion.

Others have arrived at the conclusion that their religion is incompatible with compassion for animals and therefore no longer feel comfortable attending religious events. Still others leave all religion and embrace secular humanism, or seek out religions which offer a more compassionate view of animals, while some attempt to advocate for change from within.

The model of animal compassion, with human need at its core, is based on biblical interpretations of a hierarchical scheme which grants dominion over animals to man and therefore implies that the lives of humans are more valuable. While dominion ought to imply protection and caring, because of the provision that animals may indeed be harmed/killed to benefit man, as they are unable to defend themselves, the result has been untold suffering for untold numbers of living beings, especially those designated as "food" animals.

Compassion should be measured, not by how we treat our equals, but how we treat the vulnerable and weak among us. Despite claims of compassion, allowing only necessary violence to animals has not resulted in less suffering during the 5000 years this model has been followed. Instead it has been used to justify every manner of cruelty imaginable, from ghoulish experiments which torment, maim and kill them, to terrifying deaths in slaughter houses to the killing of homeless domestic animals in the name of convenience to humans.

At its very root the argument of allowable harm to animals for human benefit is inconsistent and unjustifiable as it is not possible to assess "necessity" and certainly not in terms arrived at thousands of years ago.

Thus, the question not addressed by this premise is how to determine what is "necessary".
Today, we do accept that it is necessary to slaughter an animal to placate an angry God; this is of little consolation to all the animals murdered in the name of pleasing God, when it was deemed "necessary". Even to this day animal sacrifice continues as custom, in some societies. While it is based on superstition and fear, it is still justified in the name of necessity.

Necessity is relative: a furrier, for example, would argue that the survival of his family depends on selling fur. Innumerable cruel industries are justified by the premise of "necessity". In other words, when you set the bar at permissible killing when "necessary', the bar can be adjusted to suit those seeking to benefit from animal misery.

And while the killing of animals has been justified on the grounds that meat consumption is necessary for survival, we are now learning that it is possible to be healthy and strong while following a meat-free diet. What was once deemed "necessary" is not, and in fact, innumerable recent studies have shown that a meat-based diet is unhealthy as well as one of the primary causes of devastation to our planet.
Thus, if we do not have sufficient understanding to determine what is 'necessary' killing, then how can we justify it? In hindsight animal sacrifice and meat consumption are not necessary yet so much suffering has resulted from these so called 'necessary' practices..

Yet another problem inherent in permission to kill is that taking the life of an animal is such a violent act that it overshadows any concept or words of compassion which are reduced to empty rhetoric in the face of such violence. Permissible harming/ killing of animals cannot be included in a system that claims to be compassionate and just - it is a contradiction so strong that any other measures of compassion are negated and neutralized.

The bottom line is that there is no compassionate way to kill an animal. Animals suffer terribly when they are killed. They are frightened and in pain. No form of slaughter is compassionate: both ritualistic and secular slaughter are carried out with total disregard to the suffering inflicted on the victims.

Finally and most significantly, there are human societies which have remained meat free and do not use leather, fur or silk. The ancient, yet timely Jain religion of India, is such a tradition. It is based on the belief of non-violence to all beings. This is not just a noble sentiment, but a life style that has allowed Jains to live healthy and well-balanced lives for many millennia.

If this society has been able to survive and thrive for so long without consuming animal flesh, how then can the killing of animals to meet human needs ever be considered necessary?

It is time to rethink the archaic concept of 'necessary' killing endorsed by the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic traditions as it represents a concept which promotes and results in much UNnecessary misery and suffering.

When such religious views of animals become part of the mainstream culture, the result is every manner of exploitation and gratuitous violence. An epidemic of such acts indicates that the youth in such cultures are prone to seeking thrills from the gratuitous abuse of animals and random acts of violence to humans. In view of such spiritual poverty one has to wonder what has gone wrong.

"No society that feeds its children on tales of
successful violence can expect them not to believe that
violence in the end is rewarded" Margaret Mead.

What then are we teaching our children that allows them to harm and kill animals for sheer pleasure? The answer lies in religious models which sanctify, endorse, and facilitate violence to animals, couched in the language of compassion which does not ring true. What does it say to young people when the number of slaughtered animals escalates during the religious holidays of these faiths? Teaching young people that it is permissible to kill animals to meet a human need, is often mistakenly interpreted as a free license to harm and kill.

The evidence is clear. In the West, the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic traditions have failed to instill a message of compassion for living beings, This failure has resulted in enormous and extensive abuse all within the realm of what is considered "necessary" and has led to a proliferation of acts of sadism and gratuitous violence.

As long as religions continue to perpetuate the argument that violence to animals is allowable to meet a human need, there will be no peace, just more of the same.

"Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all living beings, we are all savages". -- Thomas Edison

If the Judeo/Christian/ Islamic tradition is not able to extend its circle of compassion to include animals, it will continue to become more irrelevant. The conclusion is irrefutable, as compassion for animals begins to take hold in society, religions which endorse abuse will continue the trend of diminishing membership and decline in importance.

It is my deepest hope that you will consider the possibility that animal lives do not have to be sacrificed to improve the lives of humans and that you can begin to embrace and instruct your followers in a broader definition of compassion for all of creation.

Urge ASPCA to Make Kapparot Chicken Abusers Give Water and Food toCrated, Suffering Chickens.

A Post from NYC resident Rina Deych
Dear Friends,
I did a little one-woman demo outside some places where they are doingKapparot. In case you are not familiar with it, here are two articles onthe subject, one by me and one by Richard Schwartz:
http://rrrina.com/kaporot.htm

The raw footage is on my YouTube page (I didn't get any of them killingthe birds, because, in each case I got kicked out before I had a chance...one slaughterer stopped himself right before he made impact):
http://www.youtube.com/user/rrrina

Through the years, I've done one-person demos outside these places. Mygrandfather, a kosher butcher (who, in his final year of life was sorevolted by what he witnessed when he had occasion to visit aslaughterhouse that he gave up his business and went vegetarian), was opposed to Kapparot. He was known throughout the neighborhood as aTzadik (righteous man), who rescued abandoned cats, dogs, and eveninjured birds, gave free food away to the poor, and allowed homelesspeople to sleep in his store. Growing up, I remember a series of"borders," as he called them, homeless people whom he would allow tostay in a room on the top floor of his home, until he was able to helpfind them jobs so they could afford to live in an SRO (single room occupancy).
My grandfather denounced the practice of Kapparot as cruel, unnecessary, and, in fact, un-Jewish. He said that it was not in the Torah or theTalmud, and that for those who felt the need to do the ritual, it couldbe done with an inanimate object (money).
Kapparot takes place during the week between Rosh Hashanah and YomKippur. Being around the places where they do this obscene sacrifice isbone-chilling. The stench of fear and blood permeates the entireneighborhood. The birds are left, packed tightly in crates, with no foodand no water for the entire week. The "unused" birds are often left inthe crates in the heat and cold, starving amid the excrement, until theycan be picked up. Some, in desperation, pluck each others' eyes out.
About a year ago, some orthodox rabbis had a meeting about the practice. It was decided that there needs to be closer monitoring and regulationof Kapparot. Until last year, I used to see some of the slaughterersthrow the birds into garbage bags (contradicting their claim that themeat is donated to the poor). This year, while I didn't get to film it,I found one place actually taking the dead birds, plucking them, andpreparing them for donation. Still this is a heinous practice that needsto be abolished.
Yesterday, I called the ASPCA to report that the animals had no food orwater and were packed tightly in crates (stacked on top of each other),left in the hot sun.
Please call and complain... they WILL come. The more people who call, the more seriously they will take the complaints.
The ASPCA cruelty division number is: 212-876-7700, ext. 4450. Ask tospeak to the ASPCA's Law Enforcement Department Supervisor, Gerry Conway.
So far, I found three places where it is being done in Boro Park,Brooklyn:
- 43rd Street, between 13th and 14th Ave., closer to 13th, next to asynagogue.
- 50th Street, between 13th and 14th Ave, closer to 14th, outside aschool.
- corner of 49th Street and 14th Ave, next to the YM-YWHA.
Please call and complain that these animals have no food and water.
Thanks so much!!!

Call Subway to End Cruel Slaughter!Action Alert!

Stop Halal killing without pre-stunning
78 Subway stores across the UK are selling Halal meat from unstunned animals it has emerged. Animals killed in this way have their throats cut whilst fully conscious; bleeding to death in abject terror and pain. The suffering and welfare implications of it are so extreme that the Government’s own welfare advisory body – the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) – have now twice asked for it to be banned.
However, there is an important distinction: the majority of Halal meat in the UK comes from animals that have been stunned – which, in essence, means it is no different from the slaughter of any animal in the UK. Despite this, Subway are selling meat from unstunned animals, imported from Ireland, even though there is widespread availability of Halal meat from animals that have been stunned within the UK.
Although no slaughter is humane – and many animals regain consciousness during the slaughtering process – pre-stunning undeniably causes less suffering on the whole.
Viva! continues to ask people to reject all slaughter and move towards a vegan diet, but please take this opportunity to persuade Subway to wash their hands of this horrific practice once and for all.
Below is a pre-prepared email, but please feel free to write your own polite letter to Subway and take a stand against slaughter without pre-stunning.

“Dear Subway
As a customer of yours I am very concerned that you are selling meat from unstunned animals in your 78 Halal accredited outlets across the UK, and I ask you to seriously reconsider this move.
I, of course, support the principle of multiculturalism but also believe that slaughter without pre-stunning should not be tolerated for any reason. In fact, slaughter without pre-stunning is illegal in the UK – the only exception is for so-called religious slaughter. It is my understanding that the Halal meat you are selling is accredited by the Islamic Foundation of Ireland, which, according to their website, are against the stunning of animals prior to slaughter.
However, animals can still be stunned and declared Halal. Indeed, the Halal Food Authority (HFA), supports slaughter with pre-stunning in the UK. But slaughter without pre-stunning means that hundreds of thousands of animals each year face the intense suffering of having their throats cut while conscious. The government’s own advisory body on animal welfare – FAWC (Farm Animal Welfare Council) – described this as “unacceptable” and recommended that slaughter without pre-stunning was banned in the UK. It said: “Such a massive injury would result in significant pain and distress.” It re-iterated this within the last couple of months when it published its report on poultry at slaughter. This report stated that birds killed in this manner are likely to remain conscious for 20 seconds or more after their necks are cut. FAWC said that they were in agreement with prevailing international scientific consensus that slaughter without pre-stunning causes pain and distress.
I oppose all slaughter, and believe that the only true way to end the suffering of animals is to stop eating them. Very many Muslims share these concerns and embrace vegetarianism.
However, if you insist on serving Halal meat at your stores, please move over to HFA accredited meat from pre-stunned animals. Otherwise I will be boycotting all Subway stores across the UK, and encourage my friends to do likewise.
Yours sincerely”

United Poultry Concerns-A Wing & A Prayer - The Kapparot Chicken-Swinging Ritual

Please Help!

"Kapparot is not consistent with Jewish teachings and law. Repentance
and charity can be better accomplished by using money instead of a
slaughtered chicken." - Former Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren

http://www.upc-online.org/kaparos/kapparot_brooklyn_oct2008.jpg
Kapparot practitioners prepare to "swing" chickens in Brooklyn, NY in
2008

Kapparot (kaparos), which means "atonements," is a custom preceding
Yom Kippur - the Jewish Day of Atonement - in which chickens are
ritually sacrificed by many Orthodox Jews. The observer "swings" the
chicken, held by the legs or by pinning the bird's wings backward,
around his or her head, while reciting a chant about transferring one's
sins symbolically onto the bird. The chicken is then slaughtered, and
may or may not be given to the poor. Prior to the ceremony, the chickens
are packed in crates, usually for days without food, water or shelter,
and birds not used in the ritual have been found abandoned in their
crates when the ceremony was over. Most telling is the callous way
practitioners stand around chatting while holding the chickens with
their wings pinned painfully backward and their legs dangling, as if
they were sacks of garbage instead of living creatures.

Kapparot is not required by the Torah or the Talmud. Most observers
swing money for charity as a symbolic gesture. However, thousands of
chickens are used each year for this purpose.

This year (2009), Yom Kippur is on September 28. This means that
kapparot will be practiced in the last week of September. Please help us
help the birds.

What Can I Do to Disperse the Kindness Message?

Please write a letter to your local Jewish newspapers expressing your
objection to the use of chickens for kapparot and urge that money be
used instead. Ask them to do an article about kapparot that examines the
ceremony from the standpoint of Jewish teachings that encourage
compassion for animals.

Please ask your Rabbi to incorporate the cruel facts about the use of
chickens in kapparot ceremonies, and how to have a compassionate
ceremony, into his (or her) Rosh Hashanah sermon. Ask your Rabbi,
please, to write an informative and directional item in the Temple's
newsletter. And please ask the Rabbinical Council of America to advocate
that kapparot be carried out with money instead of chickens.

Here are some relevant Official Statements on Animals that are
considered normative across the Orthodox Jewish faith:

"It is forbidden, according to the law of the Torah, to inflict pain
upon any living creature. On the contrary, it is our duty to relieve the
pain of any creature, even if it is ownerless or belongs to a non-Jew."
- from Rabbi Solomon Granzfried, Code of Jewish Law, New York Hebrew
Publishing Co. (1961), book 4, p. 84.

The Talmud asserts that the concept of tzaar baalei chaim includes not
only the need to avoid causing pain to animals but also the need to show
them compassion. "Whoever has compassion for other creatures is shown
compassion from Heaven; whoever does not have compassion for other
creatures is not shown compassion from Heaven." - from Talmud: Shabbos
151b.

A tale of two religions

The religious view of animals of the judeo.christian, islamic tradition, that their lives are worth less than human life is at the root of all the abuse, callous indifference and lack of integrity even by the animal protection community that we are confronted with daily.

"Nothing has changed!" And nothing will change until the issue of religious complicity in animal abuse is openly, directly, acknowledged and confronted.

A tale of two religions:

Religions influence their followers with epic myths and stories - These two tales help explain why one tradition today embraces compassion for ALL beings, while the other is stoll willing to sacrice animals to benefit humans.

The following is a lovely story of compassion for the lives of ALL beings as shown by Yudhishthira a hero in the Mahabharata epic of the Hindu religion. It contrasts sharply with the story of Abraham, of the judeo.christian tradition, who was willing to kill another living being for his own benefit:

"Questioning Abraham's Choice
At this point, let me commit the blasphemy of questioning the propriety of Abraham's actions. I hope rational minds will not condemn me for doing so. If the relevant section of the Bible (Genesis 22:01-22:13, reproduced below) is read carefully then one sees nowhere that God asked Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead. He just relieves Abraham of his command to sacrifice his child (Genesis 22:12). It is Abraham's own choice to go ahead and kill the ram (Genesis 22:13). Why was that justified? It is not that some sacrifice or the other had to be performed. Was it right of Abraham then to unnecessarily take the ram's life?

One is reminded of the story of Yudhishthira and the dog, in Yudhishthira' s last days, in the epic Mahabharata. The Pandavas renounce their kingdom and the worldly life to spend the twilight of their lives roaming around in the forest. Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna, and finally Bheema fall dead one by one. A dog joins Yudhishthira to keep him company in his wanderings. At the gates of heaven, Yudhishthira is asked to enter but without the dog, who is not allowed inside. Yudhishthira refuses the offer to enter alone, his conscience not allowing him to accept the prize of heaven at the cost of abandoning his faithful companion. Seeing his fidelity even to such a mute and non-human companion, and his sacrifice in refusing what a lifetime of walking the right path had earned him, God is pleased and reveals the true identity of the dog -- it is none other than Dharma, come to subject Yudhishthira to his final test of character. Yudhishthira is allowed inside.
How devoutly it is to be wished that Abraham would have replied similarly.

I do not think that the all-merciful and just God would have found his refusal objectionable at all. Millions of innocent animals the world over would have been spared the slaying at the hands of man; children would have been more sensitized to the sanctity of life; and less blood would have been split in the name of religion.

For my own part, I must say that if anyone were to ask me to sacrifice another's life to prove my dedication to God, I would refuse. I would commit the sin of not proving my dedication to God sooner than committing the sin of taking away another's life and thus showing total disrespect to the giver of life Himself. My children's lives may be more dear to me than my own, but they are not mine to take away. I should give up my life to protect theirs, not take theirs away to demonstrate my devotion to anybody, even God. There I differ with Abraham in the choice he made five thousand years ago -- I would consider it a transgression of my privileges if I were to agree to offer my son's life. However, Abraham's choice was different and presumably dictated by his times." It was written by Dr Ranjit Konkar -- Winter 1997 -of Beauty Without Cruelty India"

Until we acknowledge the destruction heaped on animals by religious teachings which devalue their lives, all the screaming, ranting and protesting will make no difference. We may save one or two animals along the way, but in the long run, NOTHING WILL CHANGE.

If Animal Sacrifice is Wrong, Then Why is It Okay to Eat Meat?

By Gary L. Francione , Rutgers University School of Law

Many people are very unhappy with a recent decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Ciurcuit, Merced v. Kasson, in which the court enjoined officials of the city of Euless, Texas from enforcing various ordinances to stop Santería practitioners from performing animal sacrifices using goats, lambs, and other animals, including ducks, chickens, and guinea hens. The Santería practitioners offer animal blood to deities and then cook and consume at least part of some of the animals. The federal court did not decide the case under the federal Constitution but under a state law guaranteeing freedom of religion (although the decision would probably have been the same if the matter were analyzed under the federal Constitution).

The moral issue involved in this case is similar to the one presented in the Michael Vick case. To the extent that there are differences, this case is actually stronger than the Vick case. In Euless, it is explicitly legal for individuals to kill “domesticated fowl considered as general tablefare such as chicken or turkey.” In response to the argument that butchering a larger animal such as a goat might present health problems, the court pointed out that large animals, such as deer, may be butchered and disposed of in Euless as long as they are dead when brought into the city.

So if you kill “domesticated fowl” because you want to eat them, that’s fine. If you kill them because you want to offer them to a diety (and then eat them), then that’s not fine. If you kill a deer outside of Euless and bring it into Euless to butcher it, that’s fine. If you kill and butcher the goat in Euless as part of a religious ceremony, that’s not fine.

This, of course, is nonsense.

Please do not misunderstand me. As a vegan for 28 years and as someone who embraces the principle of Ahimsa, or non-violence, I certainly do not approve of Santería sacrifices any more than I approve dogfighting. (By the way, in 1983, I represented the ASPCA in New York City when it was sued by a local group of Santería practitioners. I believe that this was the first Santería case ever brought in the United States. The ASPCA won in the trial court and I successfully defended that decision before the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division.)

But for those people who are not vegans and who object to Santería sacrifices or dogfighting, my question is “why”? Michael Vick enjoyed sitting around his backyard dog pit watching dogs fight; non-vegans enjoy sitting around their backyard barbecue pit roasting the flesh of animals who have been tortured as much as have been Vick’s dogs. Non-vegans in Euless, Texas, are consuming animal products from sentient beings who have been raised and slaughtered in conditions of torture and they are even permitted to kill their own chickens. turkeys, and other domesticated fowl.

So what are the Santería practitioners doing that is any different from any other non-vegan in Euless, Texas, or anywhere else?

The answer is, of course, nothing.

Indeed, the best justification that non-vegans have for inflicting suffering and death on 53 billion animals every year for food (not including fish) is that they taste good. We do not need to eat animals to be optimally healthy and animal agriculture is an environmental disaster. The Santería practitioners believe that animal sacrifice is necessary for spiritual reasons. They actually have a better reason for animal exploitation than most non-vegans do.

Again, please do not misunderstand me. I am not saying that animal sacrifices are morally justifiable or excusable; I am just saying that the justification used by Santería practitioners is, on its face, stronger than what non-vegans have to say when asked to justify their consumption of animal products.

So for those of you who aren’t vegan but are upset by Merced v. Kasson, ask yourself why you are upset. Ask yourself why you think that your behavior is any more defensible than that of the Santería practitioners.

And if you are vegan and your friends or family tell you that although they are not vegan, they agree with you that Santería sacrifices (or dogfighting) are terrible, use that comment as an opportunity to have a sincere discussion with them about why they think that they regard these practices as terrible and what differences they see between their own behavior and that of the Santería practitioners.

The reality is that most people—or at least many people—do care about animal suffering and death. They sincerely believe that dog fighting and Santería practices are wrong. That is precisely why people react in the way that they do these things. But that is precisely why I believe that if we engage in creative, non-violent vegan education, we can persuade many people to see the confusion in their own thinking about animal ethics and to move in the vegan direction.

US Court: Santeria, animal sacrifice, OK

A US federal court will allow a Santeria priest to resume animal
sacrifices as part of his religious practice. The ruling by the 5th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court's ruling
barring the priest from sacrificing animals, in particular, goats.

Euless, Texas city officials had attempted to ban the sacrifices,
claiming the practice raised public health concerns and violated
slaughterhouse and animal cruelty ordinances. Jose Merced, a Santeria
priest and Puerto Rico native, challenged the ban in federal court as
a restriction on his constitutional right to the free exercise of
religion.

Cruelty in the name of the gods

Raju and Sindu with their mothers at the orphanage (inset) Diyawadane Nilame Nilanga Dela

By Risidra Mendis

The Sri Dalada Maligawa that houses the sacred tooth relic and a place that is worshipped by thousands of locals and foreigners has today become a torture ground for two innocent baby tuskers.

While Buddhists and devotees worship Lord Buddha and the many gods of the devales at the Temple of the tooth relic, Diyawadane Nilame Nilange Dela stands accused of inflicting cruelty on two baby tuskers Raju and Sindu to tame them and present them to the Asgiriya and Malwatte Mahanayakes on August 7.

Despite President Mahinda Rajapakse attempting to revoke his initial order and take the two baby elephants back to Pinnawela, The Sunday Leader reliably learns that the Mahanayakes of the two chapters have prevailed on the President not to retract on his promise.

Inflicting cruelty

The Mahanayakes who are responsible for protecting and preaching Buddhism are allegedly supporting Dela to inflict cruelty on Raju and Sindu. Photos of Dela hitting one of the baby tuskers with a long pole was released to the media recently. According to reliable sources Dela allegedly used heated iron rods to burn the baby tuskers to get them to obey his orders.

The Pinnawela elephant orphanage has 88 elephants and three tuskers (not born at the orphanage). While 50 elephants were born at Pinnawela 65 were previously released to temples.

On July 25 the two baby tuskers were forcibly taken away from Pinnawela. According to eyewitness accounts Dela had arrived with around 50 policemen and forcibly taken the babies away.

Director National Zoological Gardens Duminda Jayaratne also helped Dela achieve his goal by ordering the veterinary surgeons at the orphanage to tranquilise the baby tuskers in the night. A veterinary surgeon said elephants and especially baby elephants are not tranquilised at night as it could be dangerous to their lives.

Tranquilise the babies

However according to reliable sources Jayaratne has ignored all safety measures and ordered the veterinary surgeons to tranquilise the two babies. The director had then left half way through the operation. Was Jayaratne bowing to political pressure and acting like a political stooge to save his job, or was he afraid of Dela's threats when he put the lives of two baby tuskers at risk last week?

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the two baby elephants once tranquilised, struggled to get to their mothers. Dela had refused to sign the document for the release of the two babies and it was the driver of vehicle No. 226-9308 Saman Sisira, who signed for the release of the two babies at the gate. The babies were wounded and one had broken its tusk after he was taken to the Maligawa.

Secretary to the Cabinet D. Wijesinghe and Additional Secretary G. Hapangama having signed the Cabinet paper for the release of the two elephants are now silent on this issue. The Sunday Leader learns that Wijesinghe has told zoo officials that this is an order from the top and not to interfere in this matter.

On whose orders?

The question is whose orders are these government officials following? Is it President Mahinda Rajapakse's, the Mahanayakes or Dela? President Rajapakse responding to letters sent by the Sanga, veterinary surgeons, zoo officials and animal rights activists issued a statement to return the two babies to their mothers.

However The Sunday Leader learns that due to pressure from the Mahanayakes the president has reversed his order. It was President Rajapakse who took a decision to stop the gruesome gassing of stray dogs in the country. It remains to be seen if the President a strong Buddhist himself, will save these two innocent babies from such inhuman treatment in the name of Buddhism and humanity or take the advice of the two Mahanayakes.

Hitting with poles

President Young Zoologists' Association (YZA) Pubudu Weeraratne said one baby is tied to a coconut tree within the premises of Dela's house and the other is being kept in a garage. Having been separated from their mothers at less than three years, the two babies are not even allowed to be together.

"Dela has started hitting the two baby tuskers with poles to tame them. He has also used heated iron rods on the animals to get them to obey. The babies' food consists of coconut and kitul branches. They are not given milk. This food is un-suitable for baby elephants.

"We hear that the babies are not eating this food and are being given saline. Whenever another elephant goes past, they scream in pain for their mothers.

"Pinnawela officials are taking measures to drain out the milk from the mothers to reduce the discomfort caused to the animals. It is vital that these two animals remain at Pinnawela for breeding purposes. Dela has disgraced the entire Buddhist community by what he has done," Weeraratne said.

Taken away in the night

Coordinator Elephant Conservation Forum Shantha Jayaweera said this was the first time that two baby tuskers (the first to be born at Pinnawela) were taken away from the orphanage in the night. "In 1950 a tusker was shot by the government. This is the second time in the history of the country that such cruelty is imposed on two baby tuskers. Dela initially had picked two elephants of ten and 11 years.

"However, when he realised that these two babies were tuskers he allegedly threatened Pinnawela officials and forcibly took them away. He also took two mahouts from the orphanage to be with the babies. If by any chance the animals are harmed he will blame the two mahouts," Jayaweera said.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader Zoologist Dilan Peiris said it is important that the tooth relic is taken in a casket on the back of an elephant in a perahera. "After the perahera these temple elephants are used for hard labour and safaris. They are used to carry logs and taken in the hot sun for safaris. The cruelty imposed on these two babies is a shame to all Buddhists and Buddhism. Inflicting cruelty and taming an elephant to be taken in a perahera is not acceptable in Buddhism," Peiris said.

A punishable offence

Environmentalist Lawyer Jagath Gunewardene says according to a Cabinet paper a request was made for two baby elephants to be gifted to the Malwatte and Asgiriya Mahanayakes. "The cabinet paper does not specifically say two tuskers. When the government took a decision to send a baby elephant to Armenia a court order was issued that babies under five years should not be separated from their mothers," Gunewardene said.

He added that according to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance (CAO) the torture of animals is a punishable offence.

According to Gunewardene the police can take into custody any person who violates this law without a warrant. "We are asking Jayaratne and Lokuge to release the two tuskers to their mothers. In the name of Buddhism we are asking that these animals be released. If elephants are needed for peraheras they can be hired out by Pinnawela and brought back. Brigadier H.A.N.T Perera when he was director of the zoo had said, that at least 60 elephants from the orphanage could be trained and hired out for peraheras," Gunewardene said.

Gunewardene said all wildlife is the property of the state and the state agency that deals with Wildlife is the Department of Wildlife and Conservation (DWC). "All animals in physical custody of the Zoological Department cannot be disposed of even by the minister-in- charge without a permit from the Director of Wildlife. Doing so would be an offence according to the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (FFPA).

However Director DWC Ananda Wijesooriya said his department deals with only wild elephants and not captive ones. Elephants at the orphanage are not wild, so I don't have to issue a permit for elephants to be taken from Pinnawela," Wijesooriya said.

"It was a cabinet decision"

Public Recreation Minister Gamini Lokuge said that based on a cabinet decision the two baby elephants were taken from Pinnawela. "The baby elephants are to be gifted to the Mahanayakes. The Mahanyakes went to the orphanage and selected these baby tuskers. The babies were brought to the Dalada Maligawa and kept there to get used to the climate and its surrounding. We have no intention of separating the babies from the mothers. Once the babies are gifted to the Mahanayakes they will be taken back to the orphanage and entrusted to their mothers. When the babies are big enough to take part in peraheras they will be brought back to the temples," Lokuge said.

Lokuge denied reports that Dela was torturing the babies to make them tame before being presented to the Mahanayakes. Despite the photos showing Dela hitting a baby elephant with a pole, Lokuge said he wanted to see the photos before he could comment on the issue.

Lokuge said according to the cabinet decision any animals could be chosen from the orphanage. Commenting on a court order that says that no baby elephant can be separated from its mother until it is over five years old, Lokuge said this was applicable only to elephants who were being sent to foreign countries.

FR case filed

A fundamental rights case was filed in the Supreme Court by animal rights' activist Sargarica Rajakarunanayake on Friday (31) asking that the two baby tuskers be immediately returned to their mothers for the sake of their well being.

ANIMAL RIGHTS OUTCRY AT EURO SLAUGHTER DECISION

Animal rights groups have reacted with outrage at a European Union
ruling earlier this week protecting Jewish and Muslim methods of
slaughtering animals.

Jews practise a form of ritual slaughter called shechita, while
Muslims practise dhabiha. Neither will have to involve stunning the
animal before slaughter under the ruling, a factor many animal rights
advocates consider objectionable.

The new EU rules require all slaughter techniques to make sure animals
do not suffer "any avoidable distress or pain", but they make an
explicit exception for "cultural traditions and religious rites".

It means there will now be a requirement for kosher and halal food to
be traded and sold freely in every EU state.

Peta US spokesman Philip Schein told politics.co.uk: "When these laws
were formulated thousands of years ago, they were intended to minimise
pain to animals.

"However, with today's high-speed mass-production, ritual slaughter
has often become a mockery of its original intent. Animals slaughtered
according to halal and kosher regulations come from the same
unhygienic, miserable factory farms as animals killed in standard
slaughterhouses," he continued.

"And without prior stunning, animals which are killed according to
halal and kosher methods have their throats cut while fully conscious
and slowly bleed to death."

God Spoke to Me: He Said "Stop Fucking With My Creations!"
Share

Why would god choose to impart his message to an athiest? Probably just
part of the greater plan that I don't understand... "mysterious ways."

But he does exist. I saw him. He spoke to me. And, yes, I was/am sober.

The almighty lord showed me his face and I felt the glory. And, he
explained that his most fervent supporters are morally bankrupt and cognitively
deficient -- "bible thumpers" he called them; and he told me that people will
not like to hear these words but that it is all for the greater good.

But I do have proof. God touched a king-size sheet (220-thread count) and,
miraculously, The Real Ten Commandments appeared to glow on the fabric. Of
course, he told me to bury the evidence in a secure place and never let
another human being's eyes glimpse his magnificence. But, I've been charged
with spreading the message:

God's Real Commandments

1-STOP FUCKING WITH MY CREATIONS. Some frustrated villager wrote about
"dominion". And 5,000 years later my human children are still stumbling around
drenched in blood; my non-human children are confined in misery; violence
perpetuates violence. STOP!

2-I'M NOT A VENGEFUL MOTHER FUCKER. More lies they published that the weak
and fearful bought into. Look around at the world I gave you. Everything
you needed to live in love and beauty was there. But mankind succumbed to
his degenerate nature and perverted the planet. Now you reap what you've sown.

3-SILENCE (AND TOLERANCE) ARE THE ONLY SINS. There is a hell. And there's
a den reserved for those whose eyes see evil but who are too timid to speak
for the oppressed. No one will speak for you either when your soul is on
the eternal rotisserie. Then you'll understand that silence is evil.

4-THE MEEK (AND SILENT AND COMPLICIT) SHALL INHERET THE EARTH. But it will
be a cesspool of rotting flesh, mutilated corpses, swine flu, avian flu,
mad cow disease, infertile earth and misery. You get what you fight for.

5-HUMANS HAVE DOMINION OVER NOTHING. You're a bunch of narcissistic
arrogant beings -- one of my experiments gone horribly wrong.

6-RELIGION DOES NOT HONOR ME. Religion may give you a sense of community.
But religion serves to indoctrinate the masses into ideas that have nothing
to do with me. Religion is wielded by humans to keep other humans in line.
Wake up!

7-THINK FOR YOURSELF. I gave you eyes to observe and minds to think and
understand. Why do you so willingly relinquish your own thoughts for those of
other humans. Except for the author of this note, humans have no personal
line to me. You're all stumbling around, equally in the dark (I repeat,
except for the author.)

8-STOP FUCKING WITH MY ANIMALS. Swine flu, bird flu, mad cow disease, many
more to come.

9-STOP FUCKING WITH MY ANIMALS. If you insist of ravaging flesh from their
mutilated corpses, choke on it and die, mother fucker.

10-STOP FUCKING WITH MY ANIMALS. Who the fuck do you think you are?

11-GO VEGAN OR DIE MOTHER FUCKER!

Puppies 'Viewed as Livestock' in Amish Community, Says Rescue Advocate

Exclusive Access: Cutting-Edge Facilities or Puppy Factories?
By SHARYN ALFONSI and TED GERSTEIN
March 27, 2009

The Amish are widely viewed as plain, peaceful people. Reclusive and
private, most people only catch glimpses of them as they make their way
through the hills of Pennsylvania's Dutch County in buggies.
Exclusive: Never-before-seen look at a facility where hundreds of dogs are
bred.

But some of their perfectly manicured farms are home to a secret world.
Lancaster County has been called the puppy mill capital of the U.S., and
the trade is largely dominated by the Amish.

Watch the story tonight on "Nightline" at 11:35 p.m. ET

It is a world most people never see, but undercover video shot by Main
Line Animal Rescue provides a startling look. Hundreds of puppies can be
seen stacked in crate on top of crate. Most of those puppies will
eventually be sold to pet stores, but their mothers will likely never know
a home other than this.

The female breeders live their life producing litter after litter... until
they can't any longer. Bill Smith, the founder of Main Line Animal Rescue,
says that the dogs are then disposed of -- sometimes euthanized, sometimes
shot. And it's perfectly legal.

"Unfortunately if a kennels breeds less than 60 dogs they can shoot them,"
he said. "If it's over 60 dogs they can't be shot."

That's why Smith spends so much time driving the country roads of Amish
country, rescuing dogs from breeders. On the day "Nightline" visited, he
convinced an Amish farmer to give him a female golden retriever who could
no longer breed, in exchange for some free dog food. The dog -- who spent
her life in a cage -- struggled to walk.

"When they come out of the rabbit hutches they walk like crabs because
they don't know what it's like to walk on a proper surface," Smith said.
"They drag their bodies."

There are about 300 licensed breeders in Lancaster County, and rescue
workers estimate another 600 unlicensed facilities operate in barns and
sheds. Those breeders go to great measures to avoid discovery. Smith says
some even "de-bark" their dogs.

"The farmers, the Amish and the Mennonites, they pull the heads back and
then they hammer sharp instruments down their throats to scar their vocal
cords so they can't bark," he said. "So that way they can have 500-600
dogs in a barn and no one knows. As we said, it's an industry of secrecy."

Secretive and profitable. Breeders can make upwards of half million
dollars a year. The Amish breeders sell the dogs at auctions and the
puppies at pet stores.
