Subject: Meet The Prince of Flesh, Australian horse flesh purveyor

To Whom It Concerns,

After learning of the decision to allow the human consumption of horse flesh to be legalised in Australia, I ask that this decision be overturned at once, and that the slaughter of horses for human consumption be stopped immediately.

The issue of slaughtering horses for domestic consumption has of course sparked up much controversy from animal lovers in Australia and around the world, and for good reason. The Australian public finds the killing of Australian horses for their meat to be abhorrent. This is why horse meat has never been available before now.

The slaughter of horses for human consumption in Australia will open up another world of welfare concerns for West Australia, a State in which the current government has already reduced its Animal Welfare Inspectorate from 6 to 1. So who is going to be monitoring the welfare of horses that are slaughtered?

The WA Government is already in a position where it is unable to monitor the welfare of any farmed animal used for meat. So the question must be asked, who will control and measure the process of killing horses for human consumption in Australia? Who shall ensure that animal welfare guidelines are met from backyard to slaughter?

Slaughterhouses in WA do not have the appropriate facilities for horse slaughter nor have the slaughtermen involved been trained in horse handling and slaughter processing.

Does Australia need to add horses to our plate? There is already a long list of animals that are exploited for their meat, and to add horses to this list for Australian consumption is immoral.

One of the major suppliers of horses for human consumption is the racing industry which breeds approx 30,000 horses each year. Approx 70% of these horses are simply not "good enough" and will be discarded without running a single race.

If Western Australia is to please minority groups; those Europeans who have a taste for horse flesh, will WA take the next step and cater for Asian cultures? Will the WA Government permit the slaughter of cats and dogs for their flesh? What is the difference between eating one pet and eating another? Horses are of course pets to many Australians.

Furthermore, you are all well aware of the toxicity of horse meat, poisoned with phenylbutazone, a banned substance in accordance with the Health of Animals Act and the Meat Inspection Act as described via other country parameters. Tainting the food supply with such toxins is not only negligent, but it is also immoral. It is also important to recognize that European markets are increasingly rejecting horse meat from Western countries where horses are routinely treated with such prohibited substances, and Australia will be a known target of such disapproval as well.

You have an opportunity to honor the wishes of the Australian people, to represent Australia's wishes with integrity, and to undertake the effort to protect rather than harm. It is time to refuse participation in the bloody trade of horse slaughter and I respectfully ask that you do so immediately.

I urge you to discontinue your contribution to the heinous and inhumane business of horse slaughter.

Stand up for horses.

Imagine the terror of being shipped off to a slaughterhouse, stabbed by electric prods, forced into a chute and then a bullet through your brain. Many horses have been shot 3-4 times, sometimes getting strung up and bled alive. That is the thanks horses receive after they have done so much for humans throughout history. They are used for pleasure, performance, circuses, animal testing, farming, family pets, fighting wars and PMU factory farms (PMU - pregnant mare's urine, used to make hormone replacement drugs for women). Still, our society says it is acceptable for them to be slaughtered and their carcasses eaten by humans!!

Imaginez la terreur que vivent ces chevaux envoyés à l'abattoir, frappés avec des bâtons électriques, forcés d'entrer dans des corridors étroits pour ensuite recevoir une balle au cerveau. Plusieurs chevaux ont dû être tirés 3-4 fois, ou simplement suspendus et saignés à mort.

C'est le remerciement que ces chevaux reçoivent après avoir tant fait pour les humains. Ils sont utilisés pour le plaisir, la performance, les cirques, les tests de labo, l'agriculture, comme animal de compagnie, dans les combats et sur les fermes PMU pour la fabrication des hormones (PMU - pregnant mare's urine, ou on garde les femelles toujours enceintes pour récolter leur urine qui sert aux hormones de remplacement pour les femmes).

Quand même, notre société trouve que c'est acceptable de les abattre et que leur carcasse soit mangée par des humains !!

Scotland: 'Exotic meat' in the City

Last saturday Scotland for Animals held one of our regular information stalls this time at the Merchant City Festival in Glasgow.

Despite organising officials and security first trying for some time to evict us from a public street and then attempting to get two passing police officers to arrest us for refusing to move the day was a resounding success with Glaswegians and visitors from all over the globe coming over to show their support for animals and have their photos taken with Bella.

Later in the day as we were leaving a member of the public approached us saying that a barbecue stall was set up just along the road that was claiming to sell Zebra meat.

The pitch was packing up as we went to have a look but on asking around we discovered it belonged to Khublai Khan's restaurant in the Merchant City.

Looking into this we've found khublai Khan's bragging on their website that they can provide:

"Your choice of meats or seafood including such novelties as venison, wild boar, crocodile, ostrich, springbok, zebra, kangaroo and shark" as well as "more mundane meats".

The restaurant claim that they are "Faithfully re-creating the style of cooking favoured by marauding 13th century Mongolian warriors". Aye right you are.

Scotland for Animals have submitted a complaint to Glasgow City Council regarding the sources of this meat and they are now investigating.

SfA accept that there's realistically no moral difference in killing a zebra or a crocodile for meat than a pig or a chicken. There's more than enough suffering going on with the animals humans farm and slaughter already without people like this trying to expand the market to take in even more species.

Whilst it is not our intention to promote the slaughter of animals, pre-stunning is infinitely less cruel than kosher slaughter. Please take the time to read the article below and send this letter:
New Zealand Agriculture Minister David Carter has taken a strong stand against non stun slaughter methods. It was David Carter himself who went against the advice of his advisors and implemented the NZ ban on this type of slaughter in May.

This NZ animal welfare code requires all animals to be stunned before commercial slaughter. That goes against the shechita, or kosher slaughter, requirement allowed under previous animal welfare rules, which involves the animal's throat being slit without stunning.

Wellington Jewish Council chairman David Zwartz says the ban means meat processed according to Jewish religious laws now has to be imported from Australia and that lawyers are preparing a case to have the slaughter restriction reversed!

Clearly NZ Minister David Carter is under a lot of pressure to remove his decision, the outcome of which could set a precedent to other agricultural ministers around the world and impact on efforts to have stunning more broadly accepted in the Middle East or other countries that practice this cruel method. We could not send a more dreadful message to regions that desperately need to be awakened to the need for change!

I am aware that Australian agricultural ministers are preparing for a meeting in November to discuss the future of this kind of ritual slaughter in Aus.

There is not as yet any information about the proposed court case, in the meantime we can write to the minister of agriculture, David Carter asking him to continue to support the ban on this practice in New Zealand. He needs our support to stick to his guns!!

Dear Minister,

The New Zealand Jewish community is preparing a legal case to challenge a ban on the kosher slaughter of animals.

As an Australian citizen strongly opposed to the allowance of non stun slaughter, I am writing in support of your stance and ban against these practices in NZ. Slaughter without stunning is appalling and totally unacceptable. In Australia we have lowered the bar on what is acceptable in civilised society to appease these extreme religious views and I find it a disgrace. I am hoping you will not weaken your resolve to stay strong on this issue. I feel that the outcome of the proposed challenge to the ban could set a strong precedent to regions around the world which are in desperate need of awakening and change. In Australia, agricultural ministers have planned to meet in November to discuss the future of this cruel practice. They are under pressure to withdraw exemptions for the slaughter of animals without prior stunning to meet export markets and domestic consumption.

Slaughter without stunning is significantly more prolonged, painful and is a terrifying death; it is permitted animal cruelty and in direct contradiction to animal welfare standards for humane slaughter. To deny the very animals that sustain us even the small amount of relief that stunning gives before the moment of death is truly indefensible! Exemptions to humane slaughter have been kept secret from the Australian public. I believe if more people were aware of this fact they would be up in arms! Our laws have been broken in the name of religion. We should have laws that everybody must adhere to regardless of religion. What happens if some other religion now says that it wants to conduct animal sacrifice, etc - how can one religion be exempted from the laws of the land but not another? The same laws should apply equally to all citizens and those laws should be evidence-based and adhere to the highest ethical standards.

Non stun Kosher and Halal slaughter methods are cruel and barbaric anachronisms, therefore, I strongly support both you and the New Zealand government. You are entirely correct to ban these methods of slaughter. The government here in Australia should follow your good example, as should all decent and progressive governments worldwide. We should not be sending the message that animal cruelty is ok. Laws designed to protect those who cannot protect themselves - including animals - should not be granted except in the most exceptional of circumstances.

Uganda: Govt Plans to Export Monkeys to Russia

District can now sigh with relief after it emerged that the government
was planning to export monkeys that had become a menace to Russia.

Tourism Minister Sarapio Rukundo told Sunday Monitor on Thursday that
plans were underway to issue licenses to companies that will sale them
overseas.

"We have plans to start giving out licenses to some people to export
them (monkeys) to Russia and in return the country will be getting
foreign exchange the same way we reap from local tourism," the minister
said adding, "We are going to send our team on the ground to investigate
those reports (of killing monkeys) and if we find out that it is true,
the perpetrators will be jailed."

The minister was reacting to media reports that authorities in Kalangala
had sanctioned the extermination of all monkeys to save the oil palm
fields on Bugala Islands.

The island is the second largest on Lake Victoria after Ukerewe and has
67,000 acres. Monkeys in the area help themselves on ripe palm fruits -
something that has left many farmers in the area counting hefty losses.

Do you have a private fully fenced garden?

What other pets do you have?

How old are your children?

Your ability to afford and your willingness to do routine worm and flea treatments, vaccinations, neutering (if the dog has not already been neutered) and dental costs etc.

The security of your garden is of prime imprtance and all fences and gates must be at least 6 foot high in order to adopt a greyhound. If yours are not this high, but you are prepared to raise them, then you may still apply and be accepted for adoption subject to fence work being done before adoption occurs.

All adoptions are subject to a successful homecheck and if fencing work is required the home checker will make a return visit prior to adoption taking place. This is to ensure that the fencing work has been satisfactorily completed and our greyhounds are only homed into secure and safe environments.

due to negligence. Make no mistake, UCLA labs are no different - they
just refuse to hand over public documents concerning animals in their
labs.

Take a day's vacation, call in sick, come at lunch time but whatever you
do please come out this one day to support our efforts to end
vivisection at UCLA.

Death Toll Reaches 97 as Negligence Epidemic Spreads to LA;

Western University of Health Sciences cited in 4 Fatalities & Cover-up

Los Angeles, CA – The death toll from a "negligence epidemic"
sweeping research laboratories across the nation reached 97 here in
March, according to internal government reports, said a research
watchdog organization.

Recently obtained government reports reveal federal violations within
the Western University of Health Sciences which resulted in four
fatalities. SAEN has contacted WUHS President Phillip Pumerantz to
demand an internal investigation.

According to a December 2009/January 2010 USDA report, four animals died
at the Western University of Health Sciences (WUHS) after botched
surgeries. The scathing 4-page USDA report cites WUHS for unqualified
personnel, inadequate veterinary care, and grossly insufficient
supervision of research protocols by the Institutional Animal Care & Use
Committee. In what appears to be a cover-up, facility officials were
kept in the dark about animal deaths, illness, etc. According to the
USDA WUHS uses over 1100 animals per year.

WUHS is the 27th facility unearthed by SAEN to have killed animals
through negligence within the last 1 ¾ years. Other California
facilities involved in the negligence epidemic have included Stanford,
UCSB, and Mount San Antonio College.

Causes of death have included starvation, being boiled alive,
exsanguination, asphyxiation, poisoning, botched surgeries, severe
untreated bacterial infections, temperature extremes, exposure to bleach
solutions, lung hyperinflation, hit by car, placing living animals in
carcass freezers, failed euthanasias, and gunshot wounds.

The research facilities cited in these atrocities include: University
of Nebraska, Sanofi Pasteur (PA), Memorial Health University (GA),
Stonybrook University (NY), Bioreliance (MD), University of Kansas (KS),
Colorado State University, Brigham & Women's Hospital (Boston);
Cornell Medical School (NY), Virginia Tech, University of Washington,
Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), Stanford (CA), Joliet Junior
College (IL), Dartmouth (NH), Lovelace Research Institute (NM), Charles
River Labs (MA/NV), University of California (San Francisco & Santa
Barbara), University of Wisconsin (Madison), Sewanee (TN), University of
Connecticut, University of Minnesota, Globe University (MN), and
Vanderbilt (TN).

"How many animals have to die before the USDA takes meaningful
action against these labs," Budkie added. "As far as we know
only one of these 27 facilities has received any penalties
whatsoever."

"Judging by the USDA's lack of action in the majority of these cases,
the only infraction worthy of a fine is boiling an animal alive in a
cagewasher," added Budkie. "Apparently putting live animals in
freezers, shooting them, or allowing them to bleed to death is not

Missouri, the "Show Me State," is already the nation's puppy mill capital.
Now the enterprising state aims to reinstate horse slaughter. Rep. Jim
Viebrock, R-Republic, has introduced H.B. 1747 to sidestep federal
regulations that bar horse slaughter for human consumption. According to
Viebrock, his bill would jump-start the "ailing equine industry."

Please reject Rep. Jim Viebrock's bill to sidestep federal rules that bar
horse slaughter for human consumption. If passed, H.B. 1747 lets horse
processors operate in Missouri -- even though no equine plants legally
function in the U.S. right now. While supporters insist slaughter "saves"
horses from neglect and starvation, their argument fails to recognize:

-- "Americans oppose horse slaughter by an overwhelming margin," says Glen
Bolger, national pollster and founding partner of the nonpartisan Public
Opinion Strategies (POS). In a 2007 poll, POS found that 71% want horses
preserved as part of American cultural heritage. Nearly half are less likely
to vote for a Congressperson who is against a horse slaughter ban.

-- Equine plants are known polluters that congest sewers and contaminate
land and water.

-- Under Missouri Anti-Cruelty Statues Chapter 578, animal abandonment is a
crime punishable by fines and jail time. Rather than advocate slaughter as
an alternative to neglect, lawmakers ought to enforce criminal prosecution.

-- Slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia. Methods to stun and kill cows and
pigs are excruciating when used on horses. Nonetheless, these excitable,
long-necked animals are subjected to captive bolt pistols that often don't
render them insensible. Some remain aware while killed.

-- Overpopulation stems from industries such as Premarin and Prempro (HRT
drugs made from mare urine); carriage horses; riding stables, etc. that
over-breed horses. Focus should shift to breeding oversight and responsible
care. Moreover, there is no documented connection between closure of
domestic plants and a spike in horse abuse cases. In contrast, slaughter
supplies a "dumping ground" for irresponsible breeders and caretakers.

H.B. 1747 wants to impose a U.S. market for horsemeat on a nation that
doesn't want it. The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, H.R. 503/S.B. 727,
currently before Congress, bans possession, shipment, transport, purchase,
sale, delivery or receipt of any horse for the purpose of human ingestion.
In 2006 Congress cut off funding for mandatory ante-mortem inspection of
horses. This de-funding was reinstated in the 2010 Appropriations Act. It is
illegal to kill uninspected horses under the Federal Meat Inspection Act.

In 2007 the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals proclaimed horse slaughter
illegal in Texas, home to two foreign-owned equine plants. Later that year,
U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly froze America's last kill
plant in DeKalb, Illinois for its failure to assess environmental impacts of
horse slaughter, in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act.

Missouri's proposed "rebirth" of a doomed industry is economically and
ethically shortsighted. Horse slaughter is a no-win for horses and people.
Please do not support H.B. 1747.

Please Help Pass bill H.R. 503/S.B. 727. This Bill proposes to amend the criminal code which means it is assigned to the Committee on the Judiciary, not Agriculture. If the Committee on the Judiciary can pass this bill as it did in the last session, it can proceed to a vote on the House floor.

Horse slaughter has been stopped in the United States by court decisions and state legislative actions. Horses are, however, still being transported to foreign countries, primarily Mexico and Canada, for slaughter. Only a federal law can stop this tragedy.

Chris Heyde, Animal Welfare Institute, states, "Horse slaughter advocates have been ratcheting up their misinformation campaign so we must make sure our elected officials hear the facts from the majority of Americans who support an end to horse slaughter."

Jason Miller, founder of the AR blogs Thomas Paine's Corner and Bite Club of KC, was the victim of harassment by the Johnson County Police Department on Friday, March 5th, when he was interrogated at his place of employment regarding emails sent to Kansas State officials.

Apparently, government officials involved in the recent decision to slaughter hundreds of deer within Shawnee Mission Park, were upset by emails they received from several individuals as a result of their killing spree. These officials', in retaliation, decided to use Jason's local police dept. as their own personal goon squad, in an attempt to intimidate him. While Jason Miller's anti-hunting campaign included his own singular email, it appears he is taking the heat for every email sent by anyone in opposition to the bloodbath.

This is a clear ABUSE of Kansas State officials' and the police department's power! Increasingly, AR activists are being targeted for harassment and jail time for LAWFUL, First Amendment activities. Anyone who is under the impression that this escalating government campaign against the AR Movement is limited to what they refer to as "fringe extremists" is in for a SHOCK. The FBI and others in law enforcement are committed to destroying our movement -- period!

We have received reports from the public that you are to go ahead with the culling of deer at your plant in Banbeath Fife. With regards to your firms statement that "the advice from the deer experts is that it would be irresponsible to relocate or release the deer and in the best interests of animal welfare all the deer should be culled." Could you please inform us who these experts are? We are extremely concerned about the integrity of these claims as we are aware that several expert organisations including the SSPCA have instructed you that these deer could be adequately preserved on site or alternatively easily transferred to another location. We are also aware that concrete offers have been made to yourselves for the use of suitable rehoming areas.

Further to your claim that you have been "Working with the key deer management experts, and with support of local community representatives, we have carefully examined every possible option for the management of the deer." we know that a petition containing over 2000 signatures was handed to you from local people asking for these deer to be saved and there is huge opposition to the cull from residents in surrounding areas. Again could we ask that you please tell us exactly which 'local community representatives' are supporting you in your actions?

We advise that it would be a grave mistake for Diageo to go ahead with this cull as the strength of public opposition to this is overwhelming and the advice you are being given and organisations which you appear to be receiving counsel from are looking extremely dubious.

Thank you for your email. Diageo has been working closely with deer welfare advisers at the Deer Commission for Scotland, the British Deer Society and the Scottish Deer Centre and with animal welfare officers at the SSPCA in a determined effort to address the animal welfare issues of a small herd of roe deer that has taken up residence at our Leven packaging site.

There have been deer on site for around 10 years, but recently there has been concern about the increasing numbers and health of the deer. In addition, the planned expansion at Leven – which includes the building of a new bottling hall – will result in a significantly reduced area of land available for the deer. Together these have important animal welfare implications, including even further restricted habitat, high stress levels and risk of injury.

Working with the key deer management experts, and with support of local community representatives, we have carefully examined every possible option for the management of the deer. However, the advice from the deer experts is that it would be irresponsible to relocate or release the deer and in the best interests of animal welfare all the deer should be culled.

We recognise that the deer are regarded fondly in the local community and by employees – this has been an extremely difficult decision to reach – but we have a responsibility to act on the advice of the deer experts in the best interests of the animals. The cull is being undertaken by qualified professionals in consultation with a vet and the police.

On February 17th, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will consider whether to ban or restrict the controversial practice of coyote and fox “penning” in the state. “Penning” involves the trapping, trading and selling of live coyotes and foxes to hound hunting training facilities. The captured wild canines are then released into pens and used to “train” hunting dogs. Considered “sport” – and legal in many states across the South and Midwest – one coyote or fox may be pitted against packs of hound dogs who are released into the pens to pursue the wild animals- domestic canine pitted against wild canine. This practice parallels dog and cock-fighting – activities made illegal in all U.S. states in the last twenty years. Many penned coyotes and foxes are literally torn apart by the dog pack.
A recent investigation of several penning facilities across the state by the FWC led to the arrest of 12 people and the issuance of 46 citations for various violations related to penning practices. Operators of such pens often charge a fee for individuals to train their hunting dogs on the captive coyotes and foxes. Project Coyote, the Animal Welfare Institute, and other national and state organizations strongly condemn coyote/fox penning as inhumane and ecologically reckless and seek to ban this practice nationwide. Moreover, transporting wild animals for penning purposes has directly led to the spread of rabies and other diseases. See our letter to the FWC supporting a ban on this practice, signed by over 60 prominent scientists/biologis ts, ethicists, veterinarians, and attorneys.

February 6, 2010, Altoona, PA - Dog advocate Tamira Ci Thayne, founder and CEO of Dogs Deserve Better, a non-profit working solely on behalf of chained and penned dogs, spent the coldest night of the year sleepless despite being snug and warm in her bed.

The faces of dogs chained out in single-digit temperatures and sub-zero windchills haunted her, and she worried if these dogs would survive the night in their inadequate houses, many of which contained not even the single insulating element that could well save their lives: straw.

Determined to help local dogs, she rose early and, with another DDB volunteer, took straw, food, and water to some of the worse cases.

At 1492 Dulancey Drive in Lilly, Pennsylvania, Thayne spotted two skinny dogs with inadequate shelter, minimal straw, no food, and no water. She knocked on the door, and when no one answered she left a Dogs Deserve Better calendar and stuffed the doghouses with straw to save the dogs from immediate danger of death by freezing. She gave the dogs each a bone, food, and water. They shivered nonstop while they ate in the -11 degree wind chill.

The boxer mix had very short fur, a too-large doghouse with an opening as large as the dog, and every rib and bone in her back stood out starkly as she tried to decide whether to eat or run into her house for what little warmth it offered.

Current Pennsylvania law dictates that dogs must have access to"sustenance, drink, and sanitary shelter which will protect the animal against inclement weather and preserve the animal's body heat and keep it dry." Thayne knew the law was being broken, so she returned three days later to speak to the caretaker on behalf of the dogs.

Thayne will be in district court on Main Street in Portage, Pennsylvania, at 9:30 a.m. on February 16, 2010 to defend against the bogus charges. She will be bringing photo and video evidence, and well as eye-witness testimony.

Thayne is asking all Pennsylvania residents to stand against this form of abuse by joining the coalition to Unchain Pennsylvania Dogs. HSUS estimates 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the US annually. NC makes up a HUGE part of that- approximately a quarter of a million each year. This link shows kill numbers reported by shelters in NC, although many of the 104 required shelters did not report. Adding the missing shelters easily breaks 250,000 dogs and cats killed yearly.

Let's crosspost this. If HSUS estimates are correct, North Carolina shelters kill about 1/12 to 1/16 of the US total each year! Please help spread the word and ask more rescues to save these precious animals from NC kill shelters.

Since we began our focused Carriage Horse campaign, we have been at the
hack line multiple times and when not there visibly, we have had
volunteers monitoring the activities of the carriage drivers covertly.
On January 27, 2010, an inspection of the water troughs, revealed that
water was unavailable to the horses. The water troughs were either
empty, had a small amount of dirty water or were strewn with garbage.
Horses were not being watered with buckets or from hydrants. This is in
direct violation of city regulations.

Upon inspection, activists have found carriage horse drivers to be
non-compliant with many of the regulations. No rest stops, dry water
troughs, exposed to the freezing cold and icy rain and overcharging
passengers. Our experiences have shown us, that for the most part, the
drivers are rude, obnoxious thugs who care little for the welfare of the
horses, who provide them with their income. Activists have been
attacked, spat upon, whipped and verbally assaulted with the most vile
and abusive language. Carriage drivers have dropped their pants with
children watching from the seats of their cabs. Horses have been
whipped and abused in our presence....all of this, in the direct view of
New York City's tourists.

Clearly, the people who make their living off of the toil and suffering
of these poor pitiful horses are angry about our regular presence. At
our last protest, an industry representative parked illegally in a
crosswalk, walked her dog over to the protesters in an attempt to get
her dog to "water" the activists. When her dog failed to perform, she
rolled her windows down and blasted obnoxiously loud music in an effort
to drown out the free speech of the protesters....that didn't work
either. NYPD tried to move her out of her illegal parking spot several
times, but were unsuccessful and choose to harass peaceful protesters
instead.

Consequently, New York activists will be gathering at the hack line
again, this Sunday and regularly thereafter. Please join us at our next
scheduled protest:

If you are coming to the protest, please dress warmly as it is often
very cold and windy at Central Park. Hats, gloves, scarves and any
other cold weather gear are encouraged. Dress in layers. Double layers
of socks and gloves. You can find hand and toe warmers at many area
sporting goods stores and drug stores are even starting to carry them.
They are inexpensive and will help you keep warm and stay out longer.
Don't forget water. Cold weather is just as dehydrating as hot weather
and just like the horses, humans need water too. After the carriage
horse protest we will be doing other protests for the rest of the
afternoon.

visiting New York City. Ask them not to support this cruel and
inhumane tradition. The upcoming Valentine's Day Weekend is a huge
one for the carriage horse trade. WAR will be organizing a full

India is the only country in world that provides in its Constitution for mercy and care of the animals.
BUT ......

Here's proof that the Meerut administration has unleashed shocking brutality on the stray dogs in the area to protect & shield the ILLEGAL CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSES.


For the government of Uttar Pradesh state, India and its functionaries it seems like a perfect solution that people are venting out their anger by killing ALL and INNOCENT dogs. It suits the bureaucracy as it does not to bother the SLAUGHTER HOUSES and STOP the EVER FOURISHING TRADE OF Illegal CATTLE MEAT INDUSTRY in Meerut.

In a tragic incident, a five-year-old boy who had gone out in search of his mother in a field, has been attacked and bitten to death by a pack of street dogs at Kazipur, Meerut. As a result the villagers are eliminating each stray by brutally killing them.



They are ostensibly 'remedying' the situation that led to death of two children in village Kazipur, Meerut, allegedly due to stray dog attacks. In fact, there is an illegal abattoir in village Kazipur, which is violating every possible norm - pollution control, animal waste disposal, etc. Apparently, 5000 animals, mainly cattle, INCLUDING COWS are slaughtered in the abattoir every day - and then, the animal parts that are not used, and blood, bones, etc., are all allowed to flow into an open nullah adjacent to the abattoir, that flows through village Kazipur and beyond. The strays of the area feed on these animal remains as a consequence ; or attacked children who ventured too close to the nullah that is their food source.

THIS IS THE REAL CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM .

THE ADMINISTRATION TURNS A BLIND EYE TO THIS WHILE PEOPLE TAKE LAW IN THEIR HANDS. PEOPLE ARE ENJOYING THE ACT OF KILLING DOGS AS AN ENTERTAINMENT FOR THEM (see pictures).
In any event, what has followed, and continues to unfold every single day, is murder, and cruelty beyond belief. They are caught, they are cornered, many have been viciously beaten to death. The dogs are caught in the most brutal manner possible, kept without food and water for 2 - 3 days until a sizeable number are 'collected', and then - mainly released into the forest, or surreptitiously put down or beaten to death

AS NO LAW AND ORDER IS RESPECTED IN MEERUT anymore.

INCLUDING THE POLICE, D.M., MAYOR, or U.P. GOVERNMENT, no one is bothered to stop/ control people from taking the law in their hands and brutally slaughtering dogs using innovative methods, which also includes use of arms and weapons.

All this despite the SUPREME COURT of INDIA has put a STAY AGAINST ANY KIND OF KILLING OF DOGS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

The Animal Welfare Board of India has written thrice to various functionaries within the administration. They have advised the administration regarding the correct method of controlling stray dog population. They have apprised them as to the law - the PCA Act, the ABC Rules, etc. They have offered help and guidance, for setting up the requisite sterilization, immunization infrastructure within Meerut. Eventually, they have threatened legal action, but to no avail.


PLEASE lets all write to them & Let them know that we know what is going on and we condemn the government and their functionaries for loosing the control over law and order in their state & one small city and for protecting an ILLEGAL SLAUGHTER HOUSE of CATTLE.

Water Cannon Battle In Frigid Seas

The Japanese harpoon vessel Shonan Maru No. 2 is engaging in some very
bizarre activities.

At 1300 Hours, the Japanese vessel moved in with water cannons blazing.
As they came closer, they turned on their LRAD's and surprisingly they
began to broadcast the following message over their loudspeaker: "Steve
Irwin, cease your aggressive action. Stop your aggressive action. We
have the authority to repel you."

This was followed by, "Warning, warning. This is Shonan Maru No. 2's
Captain. Stop your destructive actions immediately or we will have to
hold you to Federal law."

It is ridiculous to accuse the Steve Irwin of attacking the Shonan Maru
No. 2. The Japanese vessel is much faster. The crew of the Steve Irwin
has been trying to get the Shonan Maru No. 2 off their trail for eleven
days.

The Shonan Maru No. 2 set off the collision alert system fourteen times
as it chased and circled the Steve Irwin.

The crew of the Steve Irwin managed to deploy a stern protection line.
The Shonan Maru No. 2 ran over the 100-meter long line and snapped it
and then backed off. Water cannons from both ships made the crew on both
ships very wet but there were no direct hits causing any injuries. (more
