ALERT: Stop the Midnight Wildlife Massacre

ALTERNATE MESSAGE:

Our nation's expert wildlife agencies need the ability, through the consultation process, to set limits on federal projects and permits that harm imperiled wildlife and plants. Without this ability, logging, mining, oil and gas, livestock, off-road vehicle, and other interests will continue to ride roughshod over federal lands, causing further endangerment or even extinction of our nation's imperiled species and the ecosystems on which they depend.

That is why I urge you to immediately repeal two last-minute regulations issued by the George W. Bush Administration: 1) the Bush Interagency Consultation rule, which reduced the ability of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service to protect federally listed species through the consultation process; and 2) the special 4(d) rule for the polar bear, which limits safeguards for the polar bear from climate change.

Congress recognized the importance of your taking action on this issue by providing you with authority, under the FY2009 Appropriations bill, to repeal these dangerous regulations. That authority expires on May 9, 2009, so I respectfully request swift action on your part.

Our nation's imperiled species deserve every tool for fighting the climate crisis, including the Endangered Species Act. Full empowerment of the nation's wildlife agencies is also urgently needed to pull these species back from the brink.

ALERT: Urge Knox County, Tennessee, Schools to Stop Using Glue Traps

I've recently learned that glue traps are in use in Knox County Schools, and I'm concerned as such traps are both cruel and unsafe. They cause immense and prolonged suffering to panicked, trapped animals, who tear flesh and break bones as they struggle in the relentless adhesive - only to die from shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, or blood loss.

In addition, terrified, ensnared animals frequently lose control of their bodily functions, thereby increasing the risk of disease transmission to those who come in contact with the traps.

Please, I urge you to replace these cruel and dangerous traps with long-term, humane methods of control. Thank you for your consideration and immediate action.

ALERT: Live Dogs Mutilated and Abused in Ohio State University Laboratory

For the past 27 years, OSU experimenter George Billman has used taxpayer dollars to cut dogs open and induce heart attacks. He inserts a cuff around an artery, sews the dogs up, then forces the dogs to run on a treadmill. He then tightens the cuff, causing a coronary artery occlusion.

Dogs are sentient beings capable of perceiving pain, fear, and stress, just as we humans do. I respectfully submit that it is unconscionable to use them in this way - particularly with taxpayers' hard-earned dollars. I kindly urge you to put an end to these cruel experiments immediately.

ALERT: Wild Horses Dying at the Hands of the U.S. Government

ALTERNATE MESSAGE:

I write regarding the approximately 10,000 wild horses currently held in cramped pens by the BLM. I understand the government plans to "euthanize" these animals by shooting them in the head.

I strongly urge you to work with the National Wild Horse Foundation to create a horse sanctuary instead of destroying these horses. Not only is it the compassionate decision, it will also save American taxpayers as much as $700 million. This is a sustainable project and provides a long-term solution for these extraordinary animals.

Thank you for reconsidering your decision to slaughter these horses.
